In 2030 a solar flare wrecks the earth causing a global black out leading to most electronics to stop working in the mass panic millions of people died. What fallowed was a plague just a simple common flu wiped out a third of the world's population.
Those that died in the plague were the lucky ones. As food and supplies become scarece and people turn on each other in the darkest period of human history the Dark Winter.
