Boey was hardly aware of the sergeant. She stayed focused on her navigating since there was nothing she could do about the stowaway problem. She was only a pilot.
As the ship approached the surface, she blew a low whistle at the majestic sight. "Almost reminds me of that old movie with the blue aliens, floating mountains, and Sigourney Weaver. She was very cool in it,” Boey said. She couldn’t think of anything beautiful or elegant to describe it except ‘Whoa, so rad’.
“Tell Nolan and whoever else is trained with Exo’s to come down to the armory.”
“Aye-aye, sarge.” Boey stifled a whimper that nearly slipped under her breath, gently massaging her shoulder. This is most likely an exaggeration, but she was certain it almost popped out from its socket from that slap She wasn’t going to complain, though. Dex Bellamy was really pretty, but she kinda scared Boey because she was pretty in a very deadly sort of way.
Boey notified Exo suit wearers to meet Sargeant Bellamy at the armory ASAP. She gradually decelerated Asteria for more manageable maneuvering as it flew closer to its marked destination. The trees surrounding the area were quite imposing, but they didn’t daunt her easily, and weaving around them wasn't so challenging in the calm weather. It was almost a miracle that the crew found the closest landing zone big enough for their ship. Nice low elevation, even terrain, and a water source nearby.
In the slow descent, Boey prepped the landing gears, and once they were ready, she eased the ship down until it made a soft thump and nestled in its new spot. Asteria had made its first touchdown on their first planet.
“Awesome. Time for a pee break,” Boey declared and hopped off her pilot seat.

“Take him to a cell… Stay focused on the mission.”
Nolan followed the command without hesitating for a second. After a compliant nod to the captain, he approached the stowaway and, with Cinco following suit, led him away to one through the corridors. He noticed Nubia following them, heard her make a request to Helix the A.I. He held the teen’s arm to keep him upright and steady as possible along the way without offering any comforting or reassuring words, maintaining a neutral demeanor. As a soldier, Nolan had to stay professional and carefully divide his emotions so he could do his job accordingly and reasonably. He expected his colleagues to do the same to the best of their abilities.
When the cell door opened, Nolan only meant to give the youth a light pat for him to move inside, or at least try to guide him a little inside the room since it was obvious he wasn’t in the best condition. But he felt the boy lurch forward from an unnecessary rough shove that seemed to have come from Cinco.
He didn’t want to waste time arguing with him about it or why he seemed a bit antsy, so Nolan threw a quick reproachful glare at the psychologist, then assisted the stowaway to sit on the wall-mounted cot, a simple rectangular slab with a thin mattress and a small mound on one end to imitate a shape of a pillow that can’t be detached from its place—to prevent surprise strangles and smothers, Nolan had assumed. It wasn’t the most comfortable furniture on this ship.
"This is a scene straight out of Blade Runner.”
"A Voight-Kampff test may be be pretty useless here,” Nolan muttered. Cinco was right about the stowaway’s catatonic-like condition. Nolan waved his hand in front of him, then stepped back when he got no reaction, no reply. The kid’s brain probably wouldn’t process the hypothetical turtle flipped on its back in his current state. A shame, too. Nolan had always wanted to try using the turtle question on someone in interrogation.
“Even if we do find something in Zero’s stores, we don’t know how his body will react,” he added. “We shouldn’t risk it until he gets a proper health check from Nina. Or wait until he gets out of it on his own while we do our mission.”
He tuned out most of Cinco and Nubia’s voices while he made sure the cell door was locked and secured. The engineer wondered if everyone would have to go out, and the psychologist did most of the talking. Nolan quietly thought it wouldn’t be logical to make every crew member leave at the same time. Someone would have to stay behind in case Captain Anahi contacts them. Even if Helix can take care of Asteria by itself, it didn’t seem like a good idea to have their uninvited guest as the only person on their high-tech spacecraft.
He heard his name mentioned:
"Nolan, you have access to the weapon and life support stores, right? Dex is going to be up our asses if we don't get a move on." He nodded. One of his duties involved the ship’s security. Barely a beat later, he heard Helix’s cheery voice notifying him and Exo-suit users to report the armory.
“I guess that’s my cue to move on,” Nolan said and, without another word, started walking in the direction of the armory. He found the sergeant already there and greeted her with a respectful nod. “How long until the first step out?” he asked her. He wasn’t sure if Maverick will want him for the exploration party, but he’d like to be prepared, if not busy.
