The Broken Ones - Here is a place everyone who is broken can go to become whole again.

Everyone needs a place to call their own. Especially those who don't have one. From run aways to foster kids and everyone in between the Broken Home is a place of refuge. So are you broken? Come on in and we'll put you back together again.

Sarah was deep in thought as she washed the dishes from breakfast. She was thinking about her life and what had brought her to this place. She never even knew she had a great grandmother, then one day a lawyer just showed up and handed her the deed to this house. It wasn't long after that time that people started showing up. She smiled and sang a happy tune to work by.
 
Vic held her breath as her alarm clock blared again, for the sixth time that morning. Her head throbbed in pain, but she slowly sat up to slap a hand over the off switch. Looking at the clock through squinted eyes, she took note that it was half past noon rather than morning. "Whoops," she whispered in a gravelly voice. She probably missed breakfast, but she hoped that Sarah had left overs... Or at least, wouldn't scold her for her current state. Vic really couldn't take any loud noises at the moment.


She slowly rolled out of bed and followed her bathroom routine (as quietly as possible). It wasn't long before she had straightened out her hair (which resembled something close to a bird's nest when she woke) and changed into a pair of skinny jeans and a baggy t-shirt, ready for the day. She was supposed to visit Timmy later—it was his birthday. It barely crossed her mind that maybe drinking the night before wasn't a very good idea. Making her way into the kitchen, she plastered on her trademark grin to say good morning.
 
As Sarah was drying the rest of the dishes she saw Vic enter the kitchen.


"Good morning sunshine; your breakfast is in the microwave."


When she looked over she could tell that Vic had been drinking, but she said nothing. No use scolding someone when they were already punishing themselves. When she finished the dishes Sarah sat across from Vic at the table.


"Any plans for today?"
 
Vic's ears practicall perked up at the word "breakfast". Bless Sarah's soul for being so kind and golden. She went to go grab the plate out of the microwave, along with some silverware before plopping down in front of Sarah. In all honesty, Sarah was one of Vic's closest "friends," if you could call her that. Vic couldn't express just how handful she was for providing a home for her.


She nodded, scooping a forkful of eggs into her mouth. "It's Timmy's birthday today. I wanted to drop by and give him his present later. Why do you ask? Do we have plans today?" Vic spoke softly, not wanting to sound irritated. It wasn't Sarah's fault she did this to herself, and she was gonna suck it up and deal with the consequences.

Breakfast had been delicious and Darien was thoroughly pleased about the whole affair - not only was the food great but it was regular, which was something he was still getting used to, even a year in. He was a bit of a black hole where food was concerned, and tended to wolf it down whenever it was avaliable, so he wasn't quite used to the feeling of being so comfortably almost full, but it was certainly a feeling he liked. Heck, this whole place was something he was really fond of - a real bed to sleep in at night, three meals a day... what wasn't to like?


He'd gone back upstairs after breakfast to change out of pyjamas and into actual clothes for the day and now was pleasantly comfortable in a new, non-holed pair of shorts and a ratty t-shirt he'd insisted on keeping - no point in throwing out something he could still wear, right? Though most people might consider it well past it's wear date, given that he'd clumsily patched the thing countless times over the last few years. Still, old habits died hard and he had trouble letting go of it. Thus changed, he headed back downstairs, an easy smile over his features as he slipped back into the kitchen.


"Did you need help with anything?" he asked before looking around and noticing another tenant was down there alongside Sarah. "Ah, morning Victoria, you sleep okay?"

A low groan came from the mess of black and green hair that marked Drake's head at the noise filling the kitchen. He'd dragged himself downstairs for breakfast early that morning and had fallen asleep at the counter shortly after he finished eating, and now that the noises of people talking was waking him his head throbbed with the migraine that came from utter exhaustion. He'd not slept the night before, and had in fact only come home during the wee hours of the morning at all, and so the brief lull between finishing breakfast and now was the only sleep he'd managed to gain in the past twenty-six hours or so of what was starting to feel like the longest day of his life.


The Brit raised his head high enough to offer a glare to each and every inhabitant of the kitchen, as if was their fault that he had chosen to stay up writing his term paper, tucked away in the library of the community college he was taking night classes at to supplement his classes at school which were well below what he needed to be learning if he actually wanted to get anywhere. His head still swam with quotes and phrases he'd managed to stuff into the thing, and he was not at all thrilled with his current state - this was not the sort of morning wakeup he wanted. If he had to feel this hungover he'd like to have at least have gotten drunk before hand, but there was hardly time for partying when he was struggling to drag himself through school without an advisor - and he would drag himself through school and into college somehow, money and life obstacles be damned. There was no way he was going to end up like the numerous families he'd been dumped on before he ended up in this place.


Still, it would be nice if people could show some common decency and not wake him from his counter naps (despite the fact that he counter wasn't exactly his assigned bed here).


"Could you maybe take your conversations somewhere else?" he grumbled, even as he dragged himself back up to sitting position. "What time is it? Why do you need to go yapping about this early in the day?"

Sarah was glad that Vic was going to see Timmy today. She tried not to mother everyone too much, but she couldn't help it. She knew Vic wouldn't get into too much trouble with Timmy.


"No, just wondering. Tell Timmy I said happy birthday!"


Just then Darien came into the kitchen and sat down at the table.


"Do you need help with anything?" He asked her before looking around. "Ah, morning Victoria, sleep okay?"


Sarah got up and put her empty cup in the sink.


"Actually Darien, if you're not to busy I could use some help fixing the tractor. Damn thing broke down again." The Broken Home had a fiel where Sarah planted fruits and vegetables to cut down on cost.


Drake groaned and lifted his head. "Could you maybe take your conversations somewhere else? What time is it? Why do you need to go yapping about this early?"


Sarah smiled and stifled a giggle.


"Actually Drake, it's the afternoon. Why don't you go upstairs and get some rest?" She knew he had stayed up late doing schoolwork and was worried he'd make himself sick.

"Afternoon here is early somewhere," Drake pointed out, straightening further and rolling his shoulders, bringing one hand up to place his chin on his palm before twisting his head first to one side and then the other to crack his neck. "And I'd be plenty rested if some people could wag their chins somewhere people weren't trying to sleep." Still, no matter how crackly his words there was no true crankiness within them, and the lightness of his tone and features let it slip, even as he stifled a yawn. "If anything I should probably get ready to go tonight, too," he added, the grumble in his tone true this time at the thought of another nights classes. Really, this was not the type of nocturnal he wanted to be.


"You could help me with the tractor if you'd like!" Darien offered, his usual happy energy evident in his easy tone, "I've never actually been near one before so I don't really know what I'm doing, but we might be able to figure it out together?"


"Right, because every man in the world knows how to fix cars. Why don't you ask someone who knows what they're doing?" Drake responded, then frowned as he saw Darien's expression fall - he kept forgetting how touchy that kid was, from high spirits to feeling useless in ten seconds flat. He let out a little groan at his own stupidity - he knew Darien was a touchy case, that he felt like he was going to be dropped off and given up on every turn. He was just trying to be friendly, and Drake shouldn't have shot him down like that. He gave a sigh, and shrugged. "I'll help a little bit, maybe we can find Justin and see if he knows what he's doing." he offered.


"That'd be great, I'll go look for him!" Darien responded, his previous good mood restored. He moved too the door of the kitchen, then paused. "Uh, Sarah? What exactly is wrong with the tractor, and how do I fix it?"

For the most part, the food was helping Vic cope with her headache. She wasn't too sensitive to loud sounds anymore, and was much more capable of listening in to the conversation. She nodded at Darien when he came in, but feel the need to answer when Drake entered. Drake's bad mood did nothing to help her headache, but living with him, it wasn't too bad anymore. She was used to see him tired during the day, but his rude demeanor was enough to keep her from sympathizing. He probably didn't want it anyways.


Vic listened quietly, walking over to the fridge to get some OJ. So the two were going to help fix the tractor? She had a bit of time before she had to leave, she could check it out.


"Actually," she spoke up quietly. She took a glass out of the cupboard and poured orange juice into it. "I've had a bit of experience with engineering." It may come as a surprise, but it was true. Timmy and his dad (Vic's foster dad at the time) were big into machines and whatnot. Vic used to join whenever Timmy asked, and she found some interest in the way engine's worked. It was one of the few moments she enjoyed there. "I could help with it too, if you'd like." Vic glanced around at the three other people in the room for approval, finishing up her food as she did.

Sarah turned to Darien as Vic explained her knowledge of cars.


"I don't exactly know. It won't start; I've tried everything but it just won't start." She sighed in frustration and sat back down at the table, laying her head down with a loud THUMP. She hated not knowing how to fix things, even if they weren't that important.
 
Tori stretched and yawned. So, this was her home now. Her bare feet hit the floor and she opened her door. She walked to the kitchen and saw everyone there. "Um, hi." She said quietly, looking down and rubbing her shoulder.
 
Vic sat up, her head turning to look at the newcomer. Vic had been here for quite a while already, but the girl she looked at now was relatively new. Vic took it upon herself to give her a warm welcome. "Hey sweetie, good morning. What's your name again? I'm sorry that I have to ask, I'm just terrible at remembering names. That is, if you've already told me."
 
"It's Victoria. Victoria Reynolds." Tori said, a smile on her lips. She couldn't help it. She thought she found a friend.
 
Sarah picked her head up when she heard talking.


"Hey Tori!" She said with a smile. "I saved you a plate of breakfast in the fridge if you want it. We were just discussing what everyone was doing today. Do you have any plans?"
 
Tori walked over to the fridge and took the plate. She grabbed some silverware and sat down at the table. "I don't have any plans today." She said, the dug into the food. It was delicious, and savored every bite.
 
"Well how about I show you around? It could give us a chance to get to know each other." Sarah smiled as Tori ate.
 
"Sure." Tori said, finishing off the plate. She took it too the sink and rinsed it off. She looked beneath the sink, pulled out the soap, and washed her plate. She was whistling a tune, something soft, but happy.
 
"Great!" Sarah said happily. "I really do hope you like it here, everyone is really great. Well, Drake can be a bit ornery but you'll get used to him."
 
"Yeah he's the one slumped over the table. He gets kinda cranky sometimes but he's not that bad." Sarah casually motioned to the guy across from her.
 
Tori quickly looked down at her outfit. Nothing more then a spaghetti strap belly top and shorts. She turned red. "Would you mind if I changed?" She asked quietly.
 
"Of course go ahead!" Sarah said. She smiled and poured herself a cup of coffee. "I'll be here when you're ready."
 
With a nod and a sorry, Tori ran back to her room and changed into something more sensible. White long sleeve, black skinny jeans, and skater shoes. She went back into the kitchen. "Ready." She said.
 
Sarah smiled and placed her cup in the sink.


"Great lets go!" Sarah led Tori out the back door and down a little path. Soon they passed through a small forest that opened up to a huge lake. "This is our lake. It's a really great place to go swimming in the summer, and when it gets cold enough I like to go ice skating! So how about you? What sort of things do you like to do?"
