premise
The world begins and ends at Joseph Campau and Caniff. Whatever your reasons are, you've come to call a little suburb in the middle of Detroit home. Whether you're stumbling back from the Pub or a show down at the Sanctuary, its easy to find your way back to your apartment, whether you live above the old Polish theater, whose box office is manned by Mrs. Bugalski — the landlady — or behind Espresso Threads, a hodge-podge cafe-thrift-store-record-shop ran by Mrs. Saeed and her family. Your apartments smell slightly of mildew from the water-loggied basement and will never muffle the ever-present sound of Polish film or scratched records through the walls. In the summer, when it is easiest to keep your windows open than to put in the AC unit, you will climb into bed and hear the soft laughter of others exactly like you, walking back from Kitab or Yemen Cafe & Restaurant. The guitar of the nearby garage rockband's practice and the music of a neighbor's wedding are common sounds of spring. The fall is filled with the mews of street cats who are trying to find a home in you before the cold. Even in the winter, when the snow makes the street parking damn-near impossible, there is a beauty in the chilled walk home.
But perhaps it isn't the city, but the people in it, that make its magic.
Each of you ended up here, either due to university (Wayne State is only a ten minute drive away) or perhaps you just needed a change of pace. Maybe you lived upstate, all the way in the Upper Peninsula, and you found the close-packed streets, the walkable businesses, and the pure life here intoxicating. Maybe you're running from what you think Hamtramck can shield you from. Whatever brought you here, it is home.

welcome
hi there! Brat Pack is a slice-of-life rp that takes place in Hamtramck, Michigan during the year 1988. Hamtramck is a suburb in the middle of the city of Detroit, so our plot and cast will be involved in both areas.
Currently, there are 14 roles open: 8 people live at 1222 Casmere Ave in the 3 unites above/behind the Polish Theater, and 6 people live in the 3 units behind Espresso Threads at 1786 Holbrook Ave. See the following post for more information on each triplex, along with other areas in Detroit and Hamtramck.
There are (optional) roles that are mostly just points of inspo. You can apply as people who live in Hamtramck and Detroit as well. This rp has sandbox elements and welcome a variety of different character ideas!
If you couldn't tell by the title, this is heavily inspired by John Hughes films and the Brat Pack of the 1980s. Generally, think 1980s teen coming-of-age movies but make them 19+. However, please don't be put-off by the historical element. This is not a historically accurate roleplay, especially in regards to Hamtramck lol. I know enough about 1980s Hamtramck to get by, but the locations and general culture will be a mish-mash of both that of the 1980s and modern times. In the next post, I'll provide more information on Detroit, Hamtramck, and various locations within both areas
Because of the slice-of-life part of this rp, you'll be welcome to create your own characters, NPCs, plotlines, etc. However, I'll also provide an overarching plot-line that will mostly be events happening in town and perhaps bigger group-wide moments (ex. Mrs. Bugalski might sell the apartment! Scandal!). I'm hoping for this to be a light-hearted rp that maybe doubles as a coming of age story. I'm really excited to see everyone's characters!

⊹₊ ⋆
The Party Animal
If there is a name that is known about Hamtramck, across the seedier corners of the city, and within the dorms of Wayne State and CCS campuses, it is yours. You have always had a way with words, and your charisma causes anyone to fall to their knees. You get your way around time, hopping from job to job, on your whims alone. 'Cause that's the thing about being well-loved: you aren't really well-known.
Preferably lives at 1222 Casmere Ave.
⊹₊ ⋆
THE PREP
Some might call you a hard-ass because you take no shit. Perhaps the eldest of your siblings or maybe just an only, parentified child, you grew up quickly. You are attending Wayne State or another university in the city on a scholarship, which you've rightfully earned. Just like how you've earned the right to move away from home, even if you're only a couple of blocks away.
Preferably lives at 1222 Casmere Ave. Could be one of Mrs. Saeed's children.
⊹₊ ⋆
THE PRINCE/SS
Former Prom Queen/King/Ruler, you've never quite lost your status as a being a bit of a hardass. Maybe you're smart enough to know this is nothing to balk at, that you're actually just doing what has to be done. Some may think you don't belong here, that you must be from up state (and maybe you are) or another kingdom entirely. Maybe they're right. But little do they know that you're headed somewhere great. That this city is just one step on your path towards your name being a ubiquitous, household name.
Preferably lives at 1222 Casmere Ave.
⊹₊ ⋆
THE ATHLETE
You started living at 1222 Casmere mostly because of how shit the housing is at Wayne State. Mrs. Bugalski is a friend of your grandmother's, and when you missed out on the housing scholarship, she hooked you up. Whether you're a graduate or not, something about this apartment has touched your heart (and perhaps your roommates have wormed their way into your soul, even if they make you want to scream sometimes). Perhaps you just can't afford anything better. Or maybe, beyond being a college athlete, you aren't quite sure what else you have going for you. Life feels empty, except when you're home.
Preferably lives at 1222 Casmere Ave.
⊹₊ ⋆
THE BURNOUT
Let's be honest: the apartment reeks! And its all because of you. By default, you wanted one of the apartments that has access to the basement, where your grow project is undergone. You practically supply the whole neighborhood, including Mrs. Bugalski and her glaucoma. You probably could afford to live elsewhere with the money you're making, but why would you? Not many people are as cool as Mrs. B. And maybe, beyond that, change petrifies you. What would it mean to look beyond your nose, beyond the next joint, the next night out? Christ, that makes you sound old.
Preferably lives at 1222 Casmere Ave.
⊹₊ ⋆
THE BRAIN
Perhaps besties with The Prep, you were known in high school for your above-average intellect. Sometime around senior year or the beginning of university, you realized you didn't quite know who you were past your studiousness. What did you want to do, actually? You picked up and dropped hobbies like they were bad habits (which maybe, in your mind at the time, they were). At some point, maybe when no one signed your yearbook with anything other than pleasantries, when you saw the parties and the friendships and the messy breakups and the memories that other people were making. Maybe you dropped out of college. Or maybe you're still attending, even now, with a major undeclared.
Preferably lives at 1222 Casmere Ave.
⊹₊ ⋆
THE OUTCAST
This city is the closest thing to home you've found in a long while. Every night, there is a new haunt to explore, a new eatery to relish, a house party to be the wallflower at, a new person to meet briefly. You have always preferred people-watching to people-being. That is what makes Detroit and Hamtramck so lively to you: master of none, you do not have to be anyone. You just have to be yourself. Maybe you don't know yet. Maybe you have yet to ask yourself.
Preferably lives at 1222 Casmere Ave.
⊹₊ ⋆
THE PUNK
You are shockingly idealistic for someone who was once believed to light kittens on fire. Having come here from out of town, you find yourself believing in things you never would have, if it weren't for this city. It reminds you of the kid you once were, of the friend you could be. That is what you are known for now: your unwaivering love and quiet optimism. You are a fixture in the scene, yet it seems you are running from something. Maybe your past isn't quite so literal, but when the sun begins to rise, and all your work feels for naught, and your bed is no longer delightfully cold, you wonder if this is life: reliving the same stupid hope, over and over again.
TAKEN. LIVES AT 1222 CASMERE AVE.
⊹₊ ⋆
THE ROMANTIC
Some people go to New York City to find love. Maybe you did the same thing, and you found that NYC was not quite your speed. Or maybe your lover-tendencies got your heart broken. Now, you're here in a different city, but you still have an optimism in your heart. You believe in true, inconvenient love, and you seek it. You may have been accused of being single-minded, of being a hopeless romantic, but it may also be the case that your swollen heart has room for everyone in it. You pride yourself on being a good friend, on loving everyone the way you wished you were.
Preferably lives at 1786 Holbrook Ave.
⊹₊ ⋆
THE CAREER-PERSON
You come from a rural part of the country. From your adolescence, you knew exactly what you wanted to do with your life. You rented an apartment at Espresso Threads with the dream that you'd spend long hours, researching and studying with a coffee by your side. Nothing has gone according to plan since you came to Detroit. You find yourself straying from your original goals, caught between your newfound desire to explore the city and your desire to excel in your studies.
Preferably lives at 1786 Holbrook Ave.
⊹₊ ⋆
THE INDEPENDENT
You're not the kind of person to ask for help. Besides your friends, you have a distaste for relationships, preferring casual company or situationships. Some might refer to you using less than savory words, but you'd say you simply know what you want. The way you see it is: the longest relationship you've ever been in is the one with yourself. You care about preserving your peace, forging your desires on your own, and taking no shit.
Preferably lives at 1786 Holbrook Ave.
⊹₊ ⋆
THE ARTIST
Mrs. Saeed's deal in the paper immediately drew your eye. You thought this could be your big break: getting to play a midnight set at Espresso Threads or maybe doing some sort of art installation. Instead, all you've done is annoy Mrs. Saeed, your roommates, and your neighbors. You came to Detroit with the hope of getting some sort of career in music or art: whether its as a techno DJ, a lead singer in a garage band, a graphic designer, or even as an illustrator. You attend College for Creative Studies, finding the cost per year more than your ambition is worth. Or rather, you don't like all the rules (as Mrs. Saeed has surely noticed by now). You prefer to follow your own path, and you are dangerously close to dropping out.
Preferably lives at 1786 Holbrook Ave.
⊹₊ ⋆
THE ELDEST SIBLING
You are one of Mrs. Saeed's grown-up children. You have been saving to transfer from Wayne State to the University of Michigan, to escape your requisite job at Espresso Threads. You initially moved in and started paying your mom rent with the hope that it might be enough space. You were wrong. As the eldest sibling, you feel as though you are constantly attending to the latest family drama or problem at the store. You're handy, a jack-of-all-trades, but it is time you get to focus on one thing: your life, as you want to live it. Nevertheless, you can't imagine leaving behind your family, this city, or everything you've ever loved.
Preferably lives at 1786 Holbrook Ave.
⊹₊ ⋆
THE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT
You came all the way across the world to attend Wayne State University. Adventure thrums in your soul, though perhaps living behind Espresso Threads was never what you imagined it would be. Detroit is a whole other world, nothing like what you imagined it would be. But you're finding your own way, carving out your own home amongst the friends you make along the way. You may be shy, but you have unrelenting kindness, which may be shocking to some of the grittier Detroit natives.
Preferably lives at 1786 Holbrook Ave.
This is the town I'm living in. This is the street I'm walking down. These are the friends I'm visiting
This is the house I'm building. This is the chord I'm strumming now. This is the faith I'm leaning on
