The Beasts

I chucked, amazed, and turned around to examine the entire room. "Wow, this is...spectacular. There's so much history here. I feel...honored just to be in this room." I snapped out of my wonder and turned to Jason. "So," I said, "where do we begin?" I smiled brightly.

"First thing's first, we need to know how much you know. You know what mana is, where it comes from, and how to shape it, right?", I asked, holding up a copy of Mana for Magicians.

"Well," I replied embarrassment showing on my face, "n-no. Not really." I chuckled nervously. "I guess I'm going to need a lot of work."

I raised an eyebrow. "Alright then. Mana is like the overflow of energy your aura can't contain.", I explained, "Your aura is like a cup. It can only hold a set amount of energy. When that cup gets full, it doesn't mean you stop producing energy, it just means that energy can't be contained anymore, and so it leaks out into the world as mana. Mana is produced by all living things, some more than others. Obviously, the bigger something is the more mana it produces.". I paused, gathering my thoughts before continuing, "Now, if the Beasts were awake, they'd produce more mana than we'd know what to do with every second, but all of their mana is being used to power the Spell of Sleep the Gods cast. With me so far?".

I nodded back and continued, "Alright then. To cast spells, we actually use our own mana, but because there's so much mana around us, it's instantly replenished. Kind of like how if you took a cupful of water from the ocean, it wouldn't leave a hole. The water around it would immediately rush to fill it like nothing ever happened.". I tapped my head and said, "Your aura is controlled by your thoughts, emotions, and personality, so if you think Frostbolt, you get Frostbolt.". I held up my hand and gathered a sphere of water, contorting it into lots of different shapes as I said, "Mana can be shaped and twisted to do anything if you have enough power, but in the heat of battle you don't really have time, so a long time ago mages defined some basic spells they thought they might need.". I froze the water into a the shape of a comet and said, "You know what Frostbolt is, you know what it's supposed to do, so instead of thinking 'Okay, I need to shape this hunk of mana into a bolt of ice energy', you just think 'Frostbolt', and your brain automatically knows what you mean. It's like the difference between shaping cookie dough with your hands and using a cookie cutter. Okay?".

I chuckled and promised, "We can go to the store later.", suddenly thinking, Hey, there might be others that need tutoring. Maybe we should start a club...

"Alright, then I'll handle beverages.", I promised, thinking in anticipation of all the smoothies and milkshakes I could make and chuckling evilly at all the fruit that would have to be sacrificed for them.

"Oh alright. Just make sure not to run into the wall, it seals back up after a couple seconds.", I told her absently before turning back to Pen and asking, "So, back to mana. You got everything so far? Ocean, cookie-cutter, blah blah blah...", waving my hand dismissively.

i said"OK!!" going through. i went to my home and started baking. i made the finishing touches and smiled. "done!" picking up a tray. i picked up my cake cookies and sandwiches. "teehee!" i ran back to the school and knocked on the wall.

I looked back up the stairs at the wall-door in surprise. "Well that was almost impossibly fast.", I professed, waving my hand to open the wall for her. I crossed to the middle of the room and punched my fist into my palm, inscribing a magic circle of fire on the ground around me. Flinging my arms out to the side, my body erupted into flames, and I vanished.

I reappeared in my kitchen and wasted no time in breaking out the blender and various fruits around the place of cooking. For Nichole I blended a strawberry-banana smoothie, since she was so sweet for helping us, a blueberry-watermelon smoothie for Pen, since those fruits were said to increase focus and studying effectiveness, and a simple apple-banana smoothie for myself. I placed them all on a platter and, with a flick of my hand, appeared back in the classroom.

I set the smoothies down beside Nichole's delicious-looking platter and looked around at the dusty room. "Even though the fire cleared out the cobwebs it's still incredibly dusty...", I said in disdain, glancing up at the smokestack before shrugging and saying, "Ah well. Once we're done for the day I'll flood the room through the chimney.".

"Oooh, don't mind if I do.", I said happily, plucking a sandwich from the plate and taking a bite. "Mmmm... s'amazing.", I admitted once I swallowed, taking another bite soon after.

I swallowed this bite as well and suddenly remembered the smoothies. "Oh, I made smoothies for us all. I, uh, hope you like strawberry-banana.", I said, setting her smoothie on the table near her.
