The Beasts

I shrugged. "Not stupid, just nervous. Nervousness does things to people's minds, like an acid trip. And whenever he calls on me, I just pretend he's asking about a book I'm reading or a song I'm listening to. It stops being nerve-wracking and starts being annoying.", I explained, smiling and rolling my eyes.

I couldn't help but chuckle a little. This guy's calm attitude seemed to calm me down as well. I could tell because I began to breathe a little easier. "Thanks." I said smiling a little easier now. "That's an interesting way of looking at things. I love music, so maybe I'll be able to use that to my advantage." I turned to the guy and held out my hand for him to shake. "I'm Pendulum, by the way. You can call me Pen if you'd like. Most of my family does and, well, I'd assume that my friends would as well if I had any." I said, my smile fading just slightly, but my attitude and mood still improving drastically.

My smile slipped off my face. "N...no friends?", I asked with wide-eyed sympathy, but then my smile was back as I shook his hand. "Well, you can't say that anymore, because I'm officially your friend. Nice to meet you, Pen.", I said cheerfully.

I smiled cheerfully, but felt a twinge of guilt for saying what I did. It was true, no doubt about that. Being so shy and all, I rarely speak to people. Yet, I didn't want him to feel bad for me. He's was too nice of a guy. "Thanks! And I believe you are...Jason? I think I heard the teacher call you Jason."

"Yep! Jason, Jase, Jay, whatever you want.", I said dismissively, accidentally flinging a Frostbolt at the window. It turned to frosted ice. "Oops.", I professed, removing the cold with a flick of my hand.

I chuckled. "That was actually pretty sweet." I paused for a moment. "You know, I have to confess something. The reason I don't really know much about this is because I'm really new to it. I mean, I've read books on all of these powers and stuff and the history behind it all, but most of it all slips away form my memory and I've never done it myself. I'm to afraid to try. So, I'm pretty inexperienced and don't know a whole lot about myself, let alone the rest of what the teacher is talking about."
((I'm going to head offline for the night. I'll be back on tomorrow some more. See you all later!))

My eyes widened. "Wait a minute. Are you telling me you've never done a spell!?", I demanded, and without waiting for an answer I said, "But you're a Mage. Spells are our thing! Controlling the universe, mwahahahaha and all that stuff!".

(Might have to go soon.)

I grew slightly embarrassed again. "Yep. I know, it's shocking and a bit disappointing really. I just...never tried. And nothing ever happened by accident either." I sighed. "I wish I was more inclined to be here, as the rest of you seem to be."

"Well maybe you'd be more inclined to be here if you had a taste of the power learning magic gives you.", I pointed out, holding my hand out in front of me. "Magic gives you the power to create, ", I began, materializing a sphere of ice in my palm, ",and destroy.". The sphere erupted into flames, turning to water for a brief moment, "It lets you ensure survival, ", before it evaporated into steam and dissipated into nothing, ", and provoke change.". I smiled at him and said, "It's like playing the Gods' Vassals, invoking their will and keeping the Beasts asleep.". I noticed the girl from earlier trying to get his attention and turned my own to her, out of curiosity more than anything.

I watched, amazed, as Jason began explaining it all to me. "Wow, that really is something. I honestly can't wait to learn more about it now. Maybe, if you get some free time, you could teach me a thing or two?" I suggested before feeling the tap on my shoulder. I turned to look at the girl. "Yes?" I asked smiling, feeling much more confident than I had moments before.

"I would love to! Of course, maybe you both could show me a few tips and such before I do anything myself. I wouldn't want to do something that would hurt anyone if I made a terrible mistake. So, it's probably best if you both sort of mentor me for a little while." I told her and Jason, smiling eagerly. "Of course," I added, "if you're willing to, that is."

I smiled, happy that she agreed to help me. "Thanks. What do you think Jason?" I hoped that he would agree to help me, along with her. I wanted to learn how to do this, badly. I was so behind the other students' already. I needed to catch up somehow, and I thought that this would definitely help me.

I smiled at the prospect of teaching someone magic. "That'd be fine.", I said brightly, "Is today a good day for us to get started? No offense, but you're...a little behind, and the sooner we start the better.".

I replied to Jason, "sure! I would love to start as soon as possible. And no offense taken, I completely agree with you!" I smiled brightly, eager to begin as soon as possible.

My smile turned into one of eagerness as I said, "Alright, then we start...", pointing at the ceiling as I yelled, "NOW!". The bell rang right after my loud proclamation, and I explained to the two confused people in front of me, "The teachers have meetings the rest of the day, so we only had to stay for the first class.".

I laughed. "That sounds great! I get out of school early and get to be taught by students! Well, at least this will not only be informational and interesting, but fun as well!" I was so eager to begin, I couldn't hold back my smile.

My eager smile turned to a determined one as a glint came into my eye. "First thing's first, we need an empty classroom where we won't be disturbed. You learn by doing, not seeing. Come on!", taking Nichole's wrist in one hand and Pen's wrist in the other. I dragged them out of the classroom and to the left, dodging around confused-looking students and official government types alike. I pulled the two up a flight of stairs, across a walkway, and down another flight of stairs into the old building. Looking around to get my bearings, I pulled the to almost at the end of the hall and stopped. Releasing their hands, I glanced around furtively. Luckily, nobody was around, so nobody saw me charge my hand with mana and press it against the wall of an alcove. A magic circle blossomed under my palm, turning like a combination lock until three prongs suddenly shot out from the circle. Grinning, I took Pen and Nichole's wrists again and pulled them through the solid-looking wall. Down a spiral stairway of rock we went, not stopping until we got to the bottom. "This is one of the old magic classrooms.", I proclaimed proudly, gesturing around at the cold stone room festooned with cobwebs, "Mages and Beast Masters were trained here before the new building was built. It's a little damp, and the spiders are a little overgrown, but that just means we'll have targets to practice on!". I chuckled evilly and snapped my fingers, watching as a small flame flared in my palm. I threw it into the middle of the room where it exploded, scattering embers over the webs around the room and lighting them like dry tinder. "Ah, nice and warm.", I said comfortably, holding my hands out as the room literally went up in smoke. I casually reached over and flicked a switch on the wall, and a grinding of gears was heard as the old smoke stack was opened for the first time in fifty years.
