The Arcana Academy | Survival Of The Fittest

Mason Waters | Arcana Academy

Time: 7:15 A.M.

Location: Cafeteria then Dr. Duncan's class

It has been a few weeks into the school year now and Mason was glad that he got to see some old friends again. They were all up to their old antics again and he couldn't be even happier. The only thing that turned his smile into a frown was those Noctrem people. He couldn't stand their devilish stares and devilish being. He stared at one of them and she hissed as he raised a brow. 'Hiss at me again and I'll end you'. He spoke inside of her mind, which made her turn around and wink at him.

Mason shuddered at the wink and gagged as his friends laughed a little. Him and his friends stood up and exited the cafeteria. "Who you guys got early this morning? I got Dr. Duncan." He asked then said as the others stated who they had. Only one of his friends had the same class he did and he decided to walk with him.

His eyes caught sight of some Noctrem nerds picking on a guy, who was obviously a freshman. "Hey!" Mason exclaimed as the boys turned around with a smirk as they folded their arms over there chest. "You guys are triplets?" Mason pointed at all three of them until they became one. "Ah, the ability to multiple yourself." He said while waving the freshman away. "Don't pick on the Arcana's kids again or I will mess you up." Mason whispered. The male from Noctrem smirked. "Sounds like someone has a little Noctrem in them."

After those words, the Noctrem male bumped into him and continued walking. With a sigh, Mason walked onto class and sat in the middle section. Dr. Duncan was seen playing with chemicals as he yelled "Incoming!" And an explosion happened that rocked the whole school.

The headmaster, Denzel walked into the classroom and shook his head. "What have I told you about those damn chemicals?!" His voice roared as he quickly disappeared again. Headmaster Denzel was already mad that he had to share the academy, his academy, with those Noctrem druids and even their Headmistress, Cassandra. He was pretty upset this morning and didn't want to take it out on anyone but someone from Noctrem, all he had to do was find a target.

Melissa Johnson | Noctrem

Time: 7:30 A.M.

Location: Her room then Professor Smith's class

The blinding sun beamed through her curtains and kissed her upon the face. She groaned and rolled over, throwing the covers over her face. Her roommate, someone from Arcana was up and bouncing around, bubbly and cheerful. She absolutely hated it here and wanted to leave as soon as possible. She tried to escape the first couple of days but forgot that Headmistress Cassandra was a strong Telepath and could detect where everyone was. She rolled over and threw the covers off of her and groaned loudly.

Her roommate looked at her with a raised brow as Melissa sat up and stuck her tongue out. "Bleh." Her roommate stood up after brushing her long, blonde locks of hair and spoke. "You slept through breakfast. It's class time now." Melissa eyed her roommate as she left the room. She was wondering if she could at least try to escape again. She rubbed the sleep out of her eyes and shrugged her shoulders and just decided to give it a shot.

After changing and walking out of her dorm, she ran into a fellow Noctrem member and smiled. "No runaway today?" The male said as Melissa shook her head. "No, I decided to stick around for the school year." She said as they walked down the stairs. Headmaster Denzel appeared in front of them and pointed at Melissa. "Ah, the runaway. Your on my list already." He muttered as Headmistress Cassandra appeared behind him with her hands upon her hips. "I hope she's on your good list." She walked forth and stood behind her students from Noctrem.

"Oh and Denzel, don't threaten my students ever again." She grabbed her students and pushed them away as her and Denzel had a staring match, in which she won. Melissa looked back then continued on Professor Smith's class as she took herself a seat in the back of the class, kicking her heels up and placing them on the desk beside her as she places her sunglasses over her eyes and leans back in her seat.

Courtney Reeves | Arcana

Time: 7:00 A.M.

Location: Library then to class

Courtney closed the thick novel she had been reading and glanced at the cover. The title, “Another Day, Another Wish,” stood out boldly in cursive letters across the white cover. A friend had recommended it, saying that it was a beautiful love story that involved a girl who had the ability to grant wishes, but to her disappointment Courtney had found it very predictable and bland. She optimistically read all the way to the end, hoping that it would get better, but to no avail.

Oh well. Maybe she just had different expectations of stories. She stood up from where she had been sitting at a library table and glanced around the rest of the room. As expected, she didn’t see anyone else other than the half-asleep librarian working at the desk.

She pushed in her chair and walked over to the tall shelves. Heading back to where she had found the book, she went through an aisle and made to turn when someone bumped into her. She stumbled in surprise and the novel fell loudly to the floor, echoing in the otherwise silent library.

Turning around, she saw a Noctrem student glaring at her accusingly. Instantly nervous, she quickly muttered apologies and crouched down to retrieve her book. To her relief, after a few more seconds of unnerving silence, he left. She let out a sigh. There was no point in getting mad, especially since it was not the first time it had happened. Those Noctrem didn’t seem to care about anyone other than themselves, and if anyone got in their way, they had to pay the price. Courtney typically tried to steer clear of them as often as possible.

After picking up the book, she walked over to the correct shelf and placed it back in its place. She pulled her phone out of her pocket and checked the time; ten minutes until class. She made her way out of the library and into the hall, briefly waving kindly to the librarian as she passed.

Quinn Stevenson | Noctrem

Time: 7:55 A.M.

Location: His room, hallway, then to class

When Quinn finally woke, it was too an obnoxiously bright ray of sunshine and an equally annoying rumbling in his stomach. He checked the time, finding it to be five minutes before class started. He sighed in exasperation. As tempting as it was to skip, Headmistress Cassandra would probably have his head if he did. Unfortunately his invisibility powers did nothing to block telepathy.

Taking his time, he stretched and reluctantly got out of bed. His roommate was long gone, evident by the neatly made bed and missing backpack. The Arcana student had given up on trying to wake Quinn in the first week of school. Unlike some of the others, Quinn didn't really despise school. He just hated the regulations.

Quinn left his room and went into the hallway, where he leisurely strolled toward class. As he reached a junction he noticed someone rushing out of a room and running down the hall. The hurrying boy had a bag of chips clutched in his hand—probably an impromptu breakfast—and hadn’t seemed to notice Quinn yet. Smirking, the Noctrem boy turned invisible and waited for the student to come near. The second he was close enough, he reached out and plucked the bag from the other’s fingers.

The student, taken by surprise, nearly skidded to a stop to stare at where his food had been. However, a glance at his watch had him running again, leaving him none the wiser of the thief. Quinn allowed himself to turn visible again and triumphantly opened the bag. He walked into class three minutes late, casually greeting the annoyed teacher as he munched on his chips.

As Professor Duncan scanned his eyes over the classroom, he raised his hand up to summon the silence among the students in the room. He rested his hands upon his hips and raised a brow. "Has anyone seen Courtney? She has five minutes to get here." Mason stood up as he always does. "I'll go and look for her." With a head nod, he slipped out of the room and wondered the halls, running into Headmistress Cassandra, who he tried to avoid but couldn't. "Hey kid! I hear you're a pretty powerful Telepath. Why don't you think about crossing over to the dark side. We have cookies." She smiled brightly while fluttering her eyelashes.

Mason raised a brow at her and gave her mind a small Telepathetic blast as she raised her hands up to rest against her head. "Oh, you just so barked up the wrong tree." Cassandra said while walking off and Mason did the same, eventually bumping into Courtney. "Where have you been? We were worried sick that one of those Noctrem vermins had got a hold of you or something."

While not even waiting for a reply, Mason turned heel and walked off, hoping Courtney was following him as he entered in the classroom, pointing his thumb behind him. "Found her." Professor Duncan would wait for Courtney to enter the room before giving his whole being on time and being late classroom policy speech.

Melissa Johnson | Noctrem

Time: 8:15

Location: Professor Smith's Class

Melissa felt someone push her feet off of the desk and remove her shades from her face and saw that it was the professor. "Yo Pops. What's up with that?" She asked while leaning up and sitting straight up in her seat now. "It's Professor Smith, not Pops. And you're not going to chillax in my class." Professor Smith turned her head towards the little kid coming into her class as she hoped that he knew that he was late.

Professor Smith walked from behind her desk and snatched the chips away from Quinn and pointed a finger at all of the Noctrem kids. "I don't know what you guys did at your old school but here, things are a little different. Either abide by the rules or there is the door." She pointed towards the rectangle opening in her room.

Melissa grabbed her books and walked towards the door, which closed by itself. "Don't think so, Miss Runaway." Melissa rolled her eyes and wandered back to her seat as Professor Smith went on about what her class was about. Power Control. Something she really didn't need. She already knew how to use her ability perfectly but just put an evil twist to it.

"Psst, Quinn." She whispered. "She took those shades you helped me pick out." Melissa then huffed while leaning back in her seat with her arms folded over her chest. Her eyes danced towards the clock as she couldn't wait for this class to be over.

“Oh, sorry, I wasn’t watching the time…” She trailed off as she noticed that Mason had already turned around. Sighing, she followed after him and to the classroom. When she stepped inside the first thing she noticed was the huge blast mark marring the table at the front of the room.

Courtney didn’t pay it in any mind and sat down. It was the norm for each new class to earn a new mark on the walls or furniture. Frankly, she was surprised that table was still standing.

Almost immediately the professor started lecturing about being on time for class. Several annoyed looks were sent her way, mostly by Noctrem, for being the cause of another boring speech. Her face flushed red in embarrassment and she slowly slumped in her chair as if to avoid their gazes. Then she slipped even further down. In the next minute she was practically underneath her desk.

Courtney glanced up at the bottom of the desk. Huh. There were blast marks under there too.

“Aw man, you didn’t have to take my chips. You just mad, bro.” Quinn muttered as he headed to his seat by Melissa. He honestly couldn’t care less if Professor Smith had heard him, which he probably had.

He headed over to his desk by Melissa and plopped down onto his chair. He nonchalantly sat back with his arms behind his head, effectively ignoring the glare of the student’s view he was blocking behind him. When Melissa spoke, he glanced her way.

“She did? Damn, those looked so great on you too.” He murmured back. “Whatever. I can get them back tonight at the latest. I know some guys.” With that, he zoned out for the next thirty minutes. When he turned his attention back to the present, he glanced at the clock, noting that they only had about five minutes left.

Quinn heard a snore to his right. A student had fallen asleep with his head on his desk. “Hey, watch this.” He whispered to Melissa, smirking. He reached over and placed a finger on the desk, making it turn intangible. Sure enough, when the loud shrill of the bell rang, the boy woke with a start and the first thing he saw was the floor a few feet away. Startled, he yelped, bolted upright, and managed to fling himself backward until he fell out of his chair.

Before the student could reorient himself, Quinn had quickly pulled away and turned around. The boy stared in confusion at his desk that had reappeared, then at Quinn's back, and then at the desk again. Good thing his eyes were still bleary with sleep, or he would have noticed the slight shaking of Quinn's shoulders as he quietly laughed.

It wasn't even five minutes before Courtney was getting those cold glares from almost everyone. He turned to but his glare wasn't cold - He felt sorry for her. With the shake of his head, he stood up after Professor Duncan's lecture. "Can you guys stop staring at her? I am sure that she is sorry." He walked over towards her desk and knelt down beside her. "No need to hide. No one is going to mess with you." With a charming smile, he extended his hand out towards her and would help her up from underneath the desk.

Mason has always been the one to help almost anybody at the Arcana Academy. He need to be on his A-game even more so now that their enemies were sharing a school together. A sigh escaped through his lips as he stared back at Courtney. "Hey, ever been to the garden behind the school?" He would ask her as he waited for a response.

"Well, if you haven't, maybe we should take a walk back there or something." He smiled charmingly again as he walked off and sat down in his seat, staring at the clock then back at Courtney. Mason was ready for class to be over and done with now and couldn't wait to hear back from Courtney about his walk through the garden offer.

Time: 8:25

Location: Professor Smith Class then Headmistress Cassandra's office

Melissa did nothing but laugh at Quinn's words as she shook her head. He had always been her partner in crime for as long as she could remember since they started at Noctrem around the same time. She hated Quinn at first and played a lot of awful tricks on him but he kept up at her level of awesomeness so they became friends and started pulling pranks on other people.

When she heard Quinn's voice, she came back to reality then saw a student sleeping then watched as Quinn touched the desk and turned it invisible. "Whoa." Melissa said just as the bell ranged out and the student woke up and fell out of his seat as she laughed. When she stood up, she walked by Quinn's desk with a smirk. "Nice work." She said as she kept on walking out of the class.

She heard the clicking of heels trail behind her as she turned around and saw Headmistress Cassandra. "I did nothing this time." Melissa said while sighing. Cassandra shook her finger then rested her hands upon her hips. "I know. Follow me, please." Cassandra walked past Melissa, who had a confused look place upon her face. They entered her office and Melissa sat down in one of the chairs in front of her desk.

"I have gathered you here today Melissa because I am bored. This school is boring. No one will do anything." Cassandra exclaimed. "Maybe they fear expulsion." Melissa stated as Cassandra quickly rose up from her seat. "And it's turning my kids weak." She tapped her chin with her index finger then turned towards Melissa. "Think you and Quinn can stir up some trouble amongst these kids?" She questioned towards Melissa, who stood up with a nod.

Melissa turned heel to leave her office then rested against the door, exhaling. She needed to find Quinn to tell him who Cassandra wants done and see if he will be up for it.

Courtney stared at the hand being offered to her in surprise. Her face reddened as she realized that she really was the center of attention in the class now. However, his gesture was sweet, so she accepted his hand to sit back up.

The last thing she had expected was for him to offer to walk with her. Despite having gone to the school for several weeks, she had never had any reason to go to the garden before. But now that she did, with Mason no less, there was no way she was going to pass it up.

Her mind wandered as the professor continued on with the lesson. She stared almost dreamily at the chipped wood of the table at the front of the room. Only when the bell rang did she break out of her daydreams.

Taking a few deep breaths, she told herself to keep calm as she stood. Avoiding the other students that were walking out, she headed toward Mason and stopped in front of him. “I would lo—like to go on that walk with you.” She nervously accepted.

With his prank complete, Quinn made his way out of the classroom and idly strolled down the hall. He still felt hungry; unfortunately he had only eaten a few of the chips before they had been taken from him. Breakfast was over by now, and he wasn’t about to pay for something in a vending machine.

“Oh, why hello Quinn!” The peppy voice made Quinn look up to see Ms. Levine walking toward him. Flour dusted her red apron and her sweater’s sleeves were pushed up to her elbows. In one hand she held a tray containing some sort of round bread.

“Hey.” He greeted. Ms. Levine worked in the cafeteria, but when she wasn’t working on the students’ meals she was always experimenting with different and oftentimes strange recipes. The first time he had met her personally was when he had tried to steal some food from the kitchen at midnight. She had been working in there and caught him, but instead of being angry, she had offered him the food she had been working on. Ever since then they had become something akin to friends, and it wasn’t unusual for her to let him hide out in the kitchen or have him try the weird foods no one else dared to eat.

“I’m sorry for bothering you like grilled cheese sticking to a pan, but I just couldn’t wait for you to try this. It’s Irish Soda Bread.” She handed a slice to him, which he gratefully took.

“Perfect timing. I’m starving.” He plopped it into his mouth and chewed. “It’s good.” He mumbled around the food, taking a few more slices. Since she had to go back to the kitchen he bid her farewell and continued down the hall. He noticed Melissa in front of a door and stopped in front of her.

Offering her a piece of the soda bread, he asked, “What’s up?”
