Captain David John Worthington

The M.S. Amsterdam was docked in port at Honolulu, HI. A state off of the US mainland, it was a popular tourist destination for people around the world. Millions of people traveled here every year to see the volcanoes and natural beauty of the islands and it was an important port of call for some cruises such as the cruise that was boarding passengers; a twenty-nine day cruise in the South Pacific. Once a territory of the United States, the state of Hawaii had a rich and interesting culture. Composed of eight islands, it was said that a ninth island was growing beneath the sea floor but that it would take millions of years for it to erupt from the surface of the ocean depths. The crew members were already on board the ship, including Captain Worthington, who at the moment was stationed on the bridge.

A man of fifty-six years, Captain David John Worthington, had been born and raised by the sea so it was only natural that his career would take him to the place he loved. He had three children and five grandchildren, soon to be six, as his third daughter was having her first child in the summer. But Captain Worthington was getting on in years and as much as he would miss the sea, he knew it was time to retire. So he had planned on taking this last cruise and then retiring when he flew back home to Rhode Island after the cruise ship docked in Papetee. The crew, food, passengers' luggage, and other supplies were all loaded on board the ship and they were just awaiting the arrival of the passengers before they would depart at 4:00 PM, Hawaiian-Aleutian Time. When the passengers reached their state rooms, they would find the towels made into animal shapes and their luggage would be waiting outside their state rooms. Then there would be a quick lesson on putting on life jackets and the cruise would begin.

Emily Violet Ruthven

Soft auburn hair fell around a heart-shaped face as a young woman stood in line waiting to get her room card and check in at the counter so she could board the M.S. Amsterdam. Green eyes shone with nervousness, excitement, and anticipation as she patiently waited, one hand resting on her stomach. The young woman was two months pregnant and happily engaged, the diamond ring resting on a silver chain around her neck. This was her first pregnancy and both her and her fiancee were excited to have children although it was earlier than they had hoped. Sadly her fiancee could not accompany her on this trip due to work but he had sent her on the trip as her last bit of freedom before she would give birth in seven months. It was also her first time on a cruise and the reason she had chosen this cruise was because the itinerary sounded quite exotic. A camera rested in a black purse that was slung over her shoulder along with her passport, contact information, driver license, and ticket.

The air was refreshing and salty but it smelled...pure...was the only way the woman could describe it. The woman was wearing blue jeans and a light blue t-shirt, her hair tied back in a ponytail to keep her hair out of her face. The air carried not only the smell of the sea but also a slight chill to it for it was the beginning of September but she had researched and knew the South Pacific would be warm when it was otherwise cold on the mainland. Emily had flown into Honolulu a week early just to be able to see the state before arriving here by plane since it was impossible to drive from island to island. Rather unfortunate but how could one build a bridge that crossed the sea when the state was susceptible to cyclones, tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions?

Noticing that the person in front of her had left, she walked up to the counter and opened her purse to pull out her ticket and passport to be checked. The woman smiled at Emily and the young fiancee couldn't help but smile back. It was a beautiful day and who could hate such a day as this? A day of discovery, of friendships, of adventure! The woman who was assisting Emily, checked her information in the computer and then handed her the room key card along with stamping her passport. Emily smiled, put her things back into her purse and walked towards the ramp that would carry the passengers to the ship. On either side of the ramp were glass walls so passengers could see the ocean though they would need to go up further to see a glimpse of the ship they would be traveling on for the next twenty-nine days.

Antonio Romulus Sangrey

The M.S. Amsterdam was a ship owned by Holland America. At 777.6 feet long and traveling at 25 knots, the ship was able to carry six hundred twenty-five crew members and a capacity of one thousand three hundred eighty people. The cruise would take twenty-nine nights through the South Pacific, departing from Honolulu and ending in Papaetee. Along the way the ship would visit many interesting and exotic locations. It would cross the International Dateline and the Equator in its journey over the South Pacific. The Argentinian had also brought along his seven-year-old daughter and five-year-old son. They were in their cabin right now while Antonio was making sure everything in the pool was prepared for the trip.

However Antonio also had another reason for turning traitor although none of the passengers or other crew members would know of it. Antonio's brother had gotten into some gambling debts with a loan shark and since his brother was in jail, those debts passed onto Antonio. So he had brought his children along like always and was going to help bring some hostage takers aboard the ship. His children would remain in their cabin when the hostage situation was taking place and then he would get them when it was over. That was his plan anyway and he didn't think anything could go wrong as long as he everybody cooperated and did what they were told.

Araceli & Itzal Sangrey

Inside their cabin, seven-year-old Araceli Sangrey and five-year-old Itzal Sangrey were watching The Minions on their daddy's laptop as they waited for the cruise to begin. They had already eaten before they had boarded the ship but daddy seemed distracted though the children weren't sure why that was. Six months after their mother had died, daddy had gotten a job with Holland American, a cruise ship company, and had brought them along with him on cruises. Normally it wasn't allowed but their aunt didn't have the money to take them in and their uncle was in jail. Both children were looking forward to this new cruise, never having been on a cruise this long or in the South Pacific before so it was sure to be an adventure they would never forget.

Edna Kenwill

H
er glacier blue eyes darted around the docks, observing the vessels releasing hoards of incoming travellers. It was a peaceful, summer day, and the bustling city was filled with glee. Everyone seemed to be focused against the alignment of vessels docked by the bay. Civilians were eagerly watching the cruise ships, their bodies jittering uncontrollably. They quickly clamped their hands against their hands as the sound of the airhorn boomed throughout the city. While some let out a string of moans and groans, Edna's head immediately turned her attention towards where she could've swore she heard the ear-piercing sound. Surprisingly, she wasn't bothered by the obnoxious ruckus. She heard the sound many times before, less than the city's population. By now, you'd would've thought that the civilians would be used to it.

Edna glared at the civilians who grumbled in annoyance, her dark, thick eyebrows slanting downward. A large cigar rested between her fingers. Turning it aside, the burnt tobacco leaves fell on top of the concrete, creating a trail of ashes. "God dammit," she thought to herself, blowing out a puff of smoke before setting the handmade cigar back onto her lower lip. "You don't have to make a scene about it."

Despite the city's lively environment, Edna still wasn't happy in the position that she was in. The sweltering heat, the noisy commotion, and, what she loathed the most, the year-round vacationers that continuously interrupt her train of thought. The tropical city was too much for her to handle. Though, on the bright side, there was one thing that she fond the most, what managed to keep her there, the deep, blue sea. Edna looked forward into exploring the below of the sea. She could picture herself riding on the deck along with the swarm of seagulls squawking above her head, the array of fish buried beneath the drifting vessel. It been so long since she rode on one, fantasising her wish wouldn't make it come true.
