General thread about Tell Tales modern point-and-click/role-play games. You know the ones - pretty much any of the games after Sam & Max and Back to the Future. Oh what the heck, let's tale about them too.
Like 'em? Hate 'em? Got some genuine critique about them? Do you like the format? Has any of the games got you into their connected franchises? Hopes for the new Batman series they've been advertising?
My Thoughts:
There was a lot of backlash against Sam&Max & BttF - I enjoyed them (enjoyed their writing, though admittedly I'm a big fan of the Sam & Max and the BttF series in general) but most of the critism against them is valid. After having played The Wolf Among Us, I would happily say that the first two series where... let's say they were Telltale Games 'teething' period. TG had just gotten back into point-and-click advantures, they had some fancy new 3D rendering software to play with, they where a little like a kid with playdough.
I think they really found a good method of gameplay/storytelling with their new format, though. The timed conversation options, the 'choices tailor your story'.
My favourite thing is that I think they've found the one time when QTEs are actually an asset to a game. Nothing gets me into a character's head more than mashing away at that 'A' button, trying to make the metre fill up while my character struggles against a foe on the screen. My character struggles so I'm struggling and that is frigg'n brilliant.
My latest game was Tales From the Borderlands, which I 100% loved (please send me PMs about it, go right ahead). I think it was cool that Telltale Games played up the comedy by making some comedic twists out of their own (now established) format (ie. all those parody "He'll remember that" notifications). Also, it rekindled my need to play the original Borderlands series (the FPS games). I'd always liked the series, but now I super want to play it. Which is... pretty much the point. Congrats Gearbox, Telltale Games has made at least once person want to drop like, $100 on buying all three of the rest of the Borderlands series.
