It had been only a few weeks since Gordon first arrived here from home. He hadn't slept well at all during all that time, knowing what he left behind... Gordon swore that the Combine Advisors who invaded the base should've killed Eli Vance and then go after him and Alyx, but... Something seemed to change... Something was nudged, he could feel it... And it was quite noticeable. In a blink of an eye, not only was Eli somehow on his feet again, but Alyx was no longer there... They knew exactly who caused that nudge.
Unfortunately, before Gordon could do anything about it, something else happened. He wasn't sure it was G-Man's doing once again or if it was someone else... Regardless, in Eli's perspective, Gordon disappeared, just as Alyx did. He wasn't sure why G-Man would take him away too, especially to... Here.
He remembered it clearly. He had awakened in the middle of a community park... Scioto Mile Green Space. He was quite a sight for nearby strangers, especially since he wasn't on the right frame of mind at the time. He was initially hostile to those surrounding him since he feared he was still in the presence of the Combine. Slowly but surely, the locals convinced him they were no threat... But even then, Gordon assumed they were civilians or, at most, Resistance members.
Since then, the kind locals helped him get housing situated. After all, Dr. Freeman can't just roam the streets for the rest of his life. Or, at least, until he could return to his universe. Upon arrival, it was clear that he simply wasn't teleported to a different region in his world. For one, everything doesn't appear to be under any sort of Combine control. The city wasn't in ruins. No Combine or Overwatch troops roamed the streets. Everything looked peaceful. He would be lying to you if he told you that didn't mess with his head.
Gordon was incredibly eager to return home; to figure out what happened to Alyx and hopefully confront G-Man about it... And, of course, to remove the Combine off the face of the Earth. He may be trapped here for the time being, but Gordon was determined to find a way back to his world. Certainly, he could make a portal there. Perhaps, if he had the materials, and some help, he could maybe... Just maybe... create a gateway back to City 17.

In the meantime, he needed a place to relax for once. As much as he wanted to go home, Columbus was so much more tranquil. It'd be good for his health, he thought. Besides, with a clear mind, maybe he could hatch a definitive plan for how he could get back to the base. He doesn't know how exactly at this point... But he's sure he'll think of something eventually.
Lately, Gordon sought out an establishment where he could sit down and unwind. This ended up being a small, humble cafe that sat just a short distance from a university... Likewise, it reminded Gordon of a similar local restaurant he used to go to when he still studied at MIT. He'd visit and review his notes there while he, of course, drank coffee. It was also a little library at the time, and Gordon would occasionally check a book out there himself.
The cafe in Columbus wasn't joined with a library, and it wasn't as small as the one back home (though, it was still considered small.) But Gordon saw that it was fit enough to work in. For the last few days, he had been sketching out basic ideas and plans detailing how he could return to his homeworld as he sipped on a cup of latte which was... Okay. Gordon didn't drink as much coffee as he used to, with all the fighting-the-Combine thing and hibernating for 20 years. So, it a lot stronger than he was expected.
But hey, at least it opens early. At this point, it has been open for close to an hour!
This morning, he repeated what he had been doing: he'd arrive there early in the morning, then later before noon, he'd return to his apartment. To those there, you could see the theoretical physicist sitting at the far edge of the cafe. He wasn't wearing his HEV Suit. Instead, he was wearing an unassuming grey t-shirt and jeans. The table he sat at was already piled with papers covered in sketches, writing, and endless equations. It was unclear what theories he was formulating at the moment, but what was clear that whatever he was working on was making him visibly frustrated.
Gordon rubbed his face and looked down at the strewn-out papers. It was obvious he was tired, and goodness knows how long he may have been up before he entered the cafe an hour ago. The coffee helping a little, but it certainly wasn't enough. Gordon took another long swig of his latte before returning back to writing. He probably won't get a definite plan today... Or anytime soon... But at least it gave him something to do.
