Fantasy Tales of Raeligard

Lucia Corinna Edelgarde

Location: Tylsen Guild Hall

Giving a slight nod to the man behind the desk, Lucia's eye, or rather eye turned toward the basket the beastfolk held. Hearing that it was for the recruits, the woman smiled a bit as her hunger suddenly became more apparent. However, the basket proceeded to pass from the centaur, to the flock of thirsty women, back to the centaur again, earning a blank scowl from the aristocrat as she watched the exchange. It was somewhat amusing, however, seeing the the beast-kin who appeared soft in demeanor show a different side. She would like the woman, that, Lucia was sure of.

Smirking at that, her expression drooped somewhat when the man next to her seemingly started losing his sanity, proclaiming that this was all some stage play. Truly, the sparkly boy was unorthodox in his behavior, as well as his harem, but it couldn't be a farce.

Turning her attention to the door, a few more entered, namely an ovil-ken male, a furry beastfolk, and a--child? Humming at that, the "beggar" retorted to the sparkly one, and Lucia let out a bemused huff in response.

"No~ By all means, continue. Play or not, it's quite entertaining. As for you, it would seem this is the meeting point for new arrivals. It simply comes with a show," She commented with a smirk, the first part being aimed at the bickering couple and the latter at the fox. "I am Lucia Corinna Edelgarde. You may call me as you wish... You said the cookies are for the newcomers, correct? May I partake then?"

Looking a bit hopeful, Lucia would wait for verification before taking one of the treats and biting into it with a gleeful hum. If the woman's attitude wasn't one thing to like, her aptitude for baking scored some points with Lucia.

Sometime during all the commotion, all the lights -powered by those magic stones- came on. It lit up the hall even more. And while the hall was a shining glory, adorned with magnificent works and majestic tapestries, it left the little hooded one even more exasperated. Any and all shadows were now completely gone. Banished, as if unwanted. 'But I want you shadows...' Hyss solemnly thought with a bit of pity for the unwanted darkness. 'I appreciate you.'

She shivered. Feeling totally exposed. If she wasn't before, she'd definitely be noticed now. Nowhere to hide.

Ah! Her eyes were drawn to the large centaur woman, now brandishing a large, ceremonial blade. It was pointed its dullish tip straight at the flamboyant male and his brood. Then the centaur spoke some rather commanding words, and beneath her mask, a teensy tiny smile found its way to the girl's lips. While she watched on, awestruck by the mighty valor of this horsey matron. Her opinion of the centaur now skyrocketing. Oddly, it was this now spartan-like approach and authority that made the hooded girl feel more at ease.

She had almost been concerned when the half-horse woman was giving everyone cookies like right out of the schoolyard. But no, she hadn't needed to be so concerned. It seemed Vivienne - or rather, Madam Vivienne was, indeed, worthy of being adamantly followed. When given orders, Hyss would no doubt be dutiful in following them! As she promptly, invariably decided.

It was about then a few more people showed up to this 'little' gathering. Just how many new recruits were there to the guild? Hyss was rather surprised by the number. Or perhaps, it should've been unsurprising? The notoriety of the guild across this nation was something else. Perhaps, for all she knew, this was a small turnout. Regardless, Hyss would pay attention to all her new -erm- allies, for lack of a better word. A Caskarieth, an Ovel-kin, a small girl -even shorter than she was, surprisingly- and another fox to add to the menagerie. It was at the very least intriguing.

They introduced themselves, and Hyss made mental note. That flamboyant boy then humbled himself before the horse woman, not wanting to jeopardize his first day it seemed. Well, 'humbled', himself, as it were. Frankly, Hyss thought his attitude was appalling. He had walked in here like he owned the place! Didn't he know proper respect?! They were newbies. They were here to learn. And be taught. If this ostentatious performer had any merit, then he would have already been affiliated with the guild. Would be up there greeting the new riffraff. Not just walking through the door. Or he'd be up on a stage. Where frankly, Hyss thought he belonged. Though, perhaps not. After all, he wasn't there either, now was he? Still, she wouldn't judge him so harshly just yet. After all, he passed the preliminary exam, yes? He probably had something of worth to offer. Maybe it was literal 'worth' he could offer --after flipping the coin so flippantly. Could one buy their way into the guild? She wasn't sure. Even so, money was valuable. Adventurers often needed quite a bit of money to fund their journeys. And his attitude -while poor- was a bit entertaining, so that was worth something on the road.

Hyss frowned beneath her mask, as her stomach grouchily grumbled.

Thal nodded at the spider beastkin, glad to hear that the schedule didn't suddenly change into a much earlier time. He looked over to the armored human and let out a light, if a little awkward, chuckle. "Seems to be quite a ruckus before the ceremony." He wasn't sure how things had escalated to that point but he was glad that it wasn't really going out of control. The last thing he wanted was to walk into a fight or something along those lines. Then again, he doubted that any of the Kriegslöwen would allow such a thing to happen in the middle of the guildhall.

A distinct sound of something breaking behind him caused his head to snap to the side only to see that someone else had entered, the doorknob of the guildhall doors in her hand. Thal looked back at the door and, indeed, the doorknob was gone. However the... child (?), person seemed to have been in quite a daze as she took a step forward. Even she seemed to have been struck with a sense of disbelief.
"Not quite sure myself but... it's certainly a spectacle." He paused before leaning over to her. "Also, you might want to... not let them know about the doorknob." Thal recommended, covertly gesturing to the item in her hand.

"Ah, have a safe trip you three." The words tumbled out of his lips as the three girls made their way out of the guild. From what little snippets he heard from the girls, he hadn't really expected for them to be so polite. Still, that was a good thing, wasn't it? He hoped they enjoyed their time in Tylsen and being far away from... that sparkling man. It seemed like their overall attitude shifted when they were a few meters away from him. Taking one look at the man, Thal could tell why— though his reasoning and theirs were likely wildly different.

There was something about the theatrical man's demeanor that made Thal's head throb. Was it his manner of speech? Or was it everything about him? Who knows, really. Thal just hoped that not every noble-seeming folk was like this. He had never had a chance to interact with one before. The younger man who was referred to as a beggar— who would even say that so boldly in front of aforementioned person?— seemed to act like the bigger man and introduced himself as Falco. Hm, he seemed to be a decent enough guy.

Before he could close the door, a fox beastkin slipped inside. Thal took a cursory look outside before deciding to shut the door. He inched closer to the group but still kept some form of distance, unsure if he had to do something else before. Did they have to sign up somewhere? Either way, his eyes fell onto the basket of baked goods that the others were taking from. Ah, maybe he'll take some later when offered. So he settled for idling close to the group, a bit closer to the hooded girl than the others. He gave a small inclination of his head to the smaller girl as a greeting.

Gaius Karlings Kampfer
Location: Kriegslowe Tylsen Guild Hall; Lobby

As Gaius ate the first cookie that Vivienne had offered to the fresh recruits he dropped his guard just enough to not notice the White haired Caskarieth woman approach. Giving the woman some room to get to the desk to speak to Arien Gaius swiped a few more cookies and turned his attention to Razul and his troupe. The girls huddled together and set about inspecting and repairing the Guild Hall doors whilst Razul stood back and watched them do it while he hit on Risax. It annoyed Gaius as this sort of behavior is what he'd come to expect from people who pretended to be nobility, it was also the behavior of a walking red flag.

Almost immediately after Gaius took a second cookie on of the girls with Razul yoinked the whole basket from the desk and scuttled back over to him and began feeding him cookies; shortly thereafter another girl complained about how hot it was and started fanning her idol and the other started shining his shoulder plate. Gaius didn't even have time to comment on how rude it was to swipe the cookies that were meant for everyone two things happened, first the lights came on illuminating the whole lobby and second Falco seemingly losing it. He laughed harder and harder as he exclaimed that this was some sort of joke, that it was another test for him to be accepted into the guild unfortunately, no one else was laughing. Gaius watched as the boy began to crack and heard him utter under his breath
"Well, alright then. I'll take care of it." as he began going for his weapon.

In a somewhat instinctive response Gaius reached a hand for his Jian however Vivienne beat him to the punch, catching Gaius off guard with how quickly she drew her large blade without him noticing. Vivienne spoke now in a new tone, one of command, her words were simple and hid no meaning in them. The Girls with Razul seemed to not take the note with Viv's warning so she gave them the direct approach
"I'm telling you to leave, Return the cookies, get out, and do not return until explicitly given permission to do so. The next time you see Mr. Dazzle, he will either be in a pine box, an urn, or man enough to apologize to you for making a fool of himself and this institution. I will make a man of him. Now, go, prepare yourselves for his inevitable return." Her words were harsh but necessary.

Watching on as Vivienne corralled Razul's troupe as well as himself and Falco Gaius's attention was moved from the mess that was unfolding to the arrival of a tall Ovil-ken entering the guild and stepping off to the side to avoid being caught up in the scene the girls were creating. Gaius started to raise a hand to beckon the man over but another figure stepping into the room behind him caught Gaius's eye as he could make out a gold colored object in her palm. With a couple of blinks Gaius put two and two together and leaned in to whisper to Thea from her left side "I don't think the girls were successful in fixing the door" with a degree of subtly Gaius gestured toward the little lance wielding girl holding the golden doorknob in her hand.

With a step back Gaius turned from Thea to Arien checking to see if he had spotted what had happened to the door now and was relieved to see he was still dealing with the white haired girl. Sighing in relief Gaius turned back to the peanut gallery just in time to see the girls leave walking past Thalgrukh and the other new arrival when he heard the White haired girl speak up loud enough for others to hear. While he heard the whole statement the only bit that stuck for Gaius was the name, "Edelgarde." As he did when he heard Thea's surname Gaius began digging in his memory for information on the name. Failing to recall anything from what he had studied back home Gaius began sifting through his more recent memory yet, all he could pull was the knowledge that the Edelgardes were indeed a noble house but nothing of their profession.

Location: Cephilia's Residence / Workshop

The guild crest is the mark of a true Kriegslowen. Its image is known far and wide as a symbol of courage, honor, and justice. A lesser guild might give its new members a generic lump of scrap metal, stamped on a press or cast in the same furnaces used to make horseshoes and nails. They would probably pair it with a a mass-produced arcanizer, churned out of a sweatshop in a forgotten corner of Achelreide's industrial sector.

But Cephilia Valdergeuse was different. The thought of giving such a thing to any Kriegslowen --even a lowly F Rank-- was a direct affront to her high-minded sensibilities. While she was certainly not known for coddling newbies --that was Viv's schtick-- she had always believed in giving a man the right tool for the job. That way, when he inevitably fails at the job, he can't come crying to her.

Unfortunately, the other branches don't share her ideals. While the Tylsen branch might have a reputation for being laid back and a little eccentric, they also treated one another like family. Today marked the expansion of that family and no relative of hers was going to be given anything but the best. Perhaps that is why the others sent their recruits here. Arcanizers and crests aren't free, after all. Keeping a guild afloat costs money. "Send 'em to Tylsen. They've got that Valdergeuse girl. She can foot the bill."

No one ever said that to her, of course, but Cephilia imagined such words were exchanged behind her back. These imagined slights only made her more determined to pursue the finest quality. Better gear makes better adventurers. Better adventurers, means she would never have to lift a sword or don her armor again, allowing her to focus on her true love: arcane research.

Flashes of light danced across the dark lenses of her goggles. Lightning crackled between the knuckles of her gauntlet, studded with jade zauberites, sparkling like fine jewels. Between her ironclad fingers, she held a small metal rod, and wielded it like a calligraphy brush, using the white-hot arc at its tip to burn shapes and characters into the piece affixed to her workbench.

She had spent all night preparing this batch of arcanizers, so they would be ready for today’s recruits. “I’ll sleep when I’m dead,” was her favorite motto, and this was certainly not the first time she’d done an all-nighter in her workshop. Inspiration could strike at any time and Cephilia was accustomed to seizing the moment. Besides, even while sleep-deprived, she was still one of Raeligard's sharpest minds. And most would agree she didn't need the beauty rest, either.

With patience, a discerning eye, and a steady hand, Cephilia meticulously transformed each one into a museum-quality art piece. Geometric shapes, plants, and animals were all carefully seared into the metal, using muttered incantations to precisely control the heat and the effect it had on the metal's colors and hues for a unique effect. She could have engraved these details by hand, but chose to use magic to create a style distinctly her own. She didn't know much about these new recruits, other than their names, but wanted each arcanizer to be unique. On its cover, was the guild crest, their symbol of authority and membership: a golden lion clutching a real, working compass in its jaws, with the adventurer's name engraved beneath it. Other than that, each one was unique, covered in layer-upon-layer of details so small each could be studied under a magnifying glass for hours and still discover new surprises.

The ornate faceplate concealed the arcanizer's inner workings, which were pretty standard: a complex array of concentric gears, rings, wires, and copper tubing, some so small and delicate they could only be assembled with tweezers and pins while holding one's breath. Its innards were eternally in motion, propelled by forces unseen and not fully understood, even by Cephilia herself, despite having repaired, built, or dismanted hundreds --perhaps thousands-- of them in her lifetime. She sometimes felt that whoever created the first arcanizer had gotten incredibly lucky. Every researcher since then was merely trying to recapture that serendipitous spark of divine intervention. Its outermost ring was fixed in place and held seven slots, six locked, while one was preloaded with whichever zauberite she felt might suit them well on their journey.

With her work finally complete, the arc fizzled out. The cascarieth woman breathed a sigh of relief as she peeled the heavy brass goggles from her face, so she could gaze upon her handiwork with her own eyes. The etchings were still glowing red hot, but everything seemed to be exactly as she had envisioned it, including the ovil-ken adventurer's name. No zauberites in this one, though the arcanizer's components were still there.

"The fool... there's always one," she whispered to herself as she stood and stretched her long slender limbs and began to rid herself of the clunky electrified gauntlet and various layers of protective gear. The synchronized clocks on her wall showed the time was just after ten. Good. The ceremony was to begin at noon. She had just enough time for breakfast and a warm bath, not necessarily in that order. The newbies never show up on time anyway, she thought. Last time, she had to personally track down a country bumpkin who'd gotten lost in Tylsen's back alleys.

As she headed for the exit, Cephilia took one last look at the orc's arcanizer, still sizzling on her workbench, as well as the ones she had made for the other adventurers. She could not help but smile, at her own handiwork, as well as at what was to come. "Well, he's our fool now," she said with a wistful sigh. "They all are."

Scene 4: New Bonds
Synopsis:
Razul Dazzle, having been separated from his usual crew, must make amends and forge new relationships with his soon-to-be allies. Two of them, whose names are Falco and Lucia, are among those who are lucky enough to be graced in his presence. Albeit, one seems 'conflicted' with their feelings...

It was all true; ✨Razul Dazzle✨ never intended to insult anyone, heavens forbid! So when the now-named Falco approached with a notably sour tone... even ✨Razul Dazzle✨ could understand the source of his anger. The wasn't a beggar, surprise, surprise; and repeatedly saying that in his face likely didn't help, either. Regardless of how much the insults weighed on the hero's desire to roll his eyes, he could at least respect Falco for bothering to introduce himself even after everything.

✨Razul Dazzle✨ strutted over to the thief, and as he got closer it almost seemed like the blinding glimmer grew. He swiped Falco's hand, much like with Vivi earlier. "The pleasure is all mine! If you insist, Falco, then my name is not 'Sparkles,' but Razul Dazzle." He perked his head up as to accentuate the shine on his headpiece. "You should not worry, though. If you were to die in battle, I'll swear it upon myself to make sure you are remembered lovingly." With the lack of overwhelming cadence in that sentence, one would have thought he was acting serious; up until he smirked again. "That is, if I fail to save you, myself!"

And as if to make matters worse, ✨Razul Dazzle✨'s eyes widened, putting a fist into his palm as though he'd just thought Eureka! He'd seen this behavior in Girl B! When he first met her, she said something along the same, awfully rude lines, but it was painfully obvious that she had not meant any of the spoken harshness. Odd, how he couldn't get the same, initial vibes from this man; it must have been because of the gender!

✨Razul Dazzle✨ took a step back, kneeling for a polite bow. "I apologize for any grievance I may have or will cause you." As he stood, though, he averted his gaze slightly; a light red tinged his cheeks. "And, sorry to inform you, but I do not swing that way. I appreciate the gesture, however…" With a last wink at Falco, he flicked his cape around with a turn, speedily walking to the commenting Lucia: the pretty lady who slipped a remark to them. Despite setting his sights on her, Razul's thoughts betrayed him. Why is a guy being like that to me? Was I not on top of my act? Did he happen to notice?

After a light shake of his head, ✨Razul Dazzle✨ now stood behind the Caskarieth lady. "Lucia Corrina Edelgarde," he parroted. The moment she turned to him, the gracious hero took her hand within a singular second, bringing it to his soft lips. "Goodness, I was rather flabbergasted when you called out to us! I thought I was seeing things! But I must ask, did you suffer injurious disrepair upon your wings when you plummeted from the heavens?" There was a new sparkle in ✨Razul Dazzle✨'s eyes, staring Lucia down like a loyalist would their queen.

"are you sure? i mean? well.. ok?" Risax quirked an eyebrow at razul’s response he definitely seemed like he was spooked by the beastfolk appearance. “But err thanks for the complement“ Risax added there tone obviously confused by the overly eccentric noble. Attention then returning to the groups newest addition Thal. “certainly it’s been a unique way of greeting us all adventuring chaotic right? Seems a perfect fit.” Risax would comment with a smile and a small chuckle. he’d then kinda look around awkwardly the conversations, a few more people walked into the room.

another fox-like beastfolk whom asked about if this was the right place too considering the scene having been caused by the noble it was a fairly reasonable assumption. “Yeah this is the right place but we are definitely a lively group is all” Risax responded with a big cheesy grin towards them and the other girl that had walked in, then he’d just munch on the cookie he’d taken, this was gonna be great a real adventure.

Location: Tylsen Guild Hall

As more adventurers arrived, the guild hall's main floor became a chorus of jostling bodies and voices. Vivienne began to wish she had armed herself with a list of names of those who would be attending. Her height would make getting a head count rather easy, if only she had a role call. Sadly, she couldn't even remember how many were expected. About a dozen... I think? When leaving her home this morning, she merely wanted to be a friendly face for the new recruits, not the primary authority figure in the room. But, unsurprisingly, they began to gravitate toward her. Even Arien seemed satisfied with keeping the receptionist's desk between himself and the growing mob.

But, despite some obvious troublemakers, most of this group seemed relatively level-headed and good-natured. Some loitered quietly. Some politely introduced themselves or struck up conversations with their peers. To these, Vivienne smiled and welcomed them, gesturing to the newly-reposessed, (and thankfully still quite full,) basket of cookies as she did so. Welcome. I am pleased to make your acquaintance, Mr. Nichor, you're in the right place," she said to the curious fox beastfolk, though the silver-haired Cascarieth girl beat her to it. "And, yes, you may partake as well, Miss Edelgarde. Help yourselves."

The centaur unearthed a well-worn pocketwatch buried beneath her many layers of clothing, checked the time, and noticeably frowned. Not for the first time, she began to wonder if it might be a good idea to go check on Cephilia. The ceremony was supposed to begin at noon, but with this many energetic new recruits gathered in one place, it might be best to get underway sooner rather than later. They seemed eager to work and there was no shortage of tasks to be found here in Tylsen.

Yes, I think I will, Vivienne thought as she weighed her options.

Like most good deeds he had done in his life, Falco immediately regretted attempting to make peace with Razul. The boy was clearly... damaged.

"The pleasure is all mine! If you insist, Falco, then my name is not 'Sparkles,' but Razul Dazzle. You should not worry, though. If you were to die in battle, I'll swear it upon myself to make sure you are remembered lovingly," Razul declared and sounded eeerily sane as he did so. "That is, if I fail to save you, myself!"

"R-right... sure... glad to know you got my back, pal," Falco said, as he waited for this creature to release his hand. When Razul finally did, Falco slowly returned his hand to his pocket, but not before making a mental note to scrub and disinfect it later, lest he catch whatever brain-melting parasite was afflicting this young man. He had literally dug through the trash this morning and felt cleaner then than he did now.

"I apologize for any grievance I may have or will cause you," Razul added, as a slight blush came to his cheeks. "And, sorry to inform you, but I do not swing that way. I appreciate the gesture, however…"

"Same. I'm glad you feel... loved? Or whatever. I'm sure shit gets really weird when you don't," Falco replied, his face scrunching up in... horror? Confusion? Disgust? All of the above? But Razul was already fluttering away toward the cascarieth girl, Lucia. Were it anyone else, Falco might feel the urge to intercept and try to snatch her up first, but Razul was hardly a threat and she seemed like the type of girl who was resistant to such foolish behavior. He got the impression they were both nobles, but Razul was clearly not on the the same level.

He was watching this spectacle when he felt a light tap on his shoulder and gazed up into Vivienne's soft eyes. "I think I'm going to go fetch Cephilia," she said, looking slightly worried. "Mind the cookies and make sure everyone-"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, hang on. You, stay here. How 'bout I go?" Falco said enthusiastically gesturing to himself. "I am her favorite adventurer after all."

Did she roll her eyes? It definitely looked like she rolled her eyes. "Falion, sweetheart, Lady Cephilia has been quite busy with her research and tinkering and whatnot. I fear she may object to your, umm... how do I say this... your rather 'unique energy.'"

"Nah, I got this.

"Are you sure? She can get quite testy when she's been holed up in her workshop for too long," Vivienne warned, wagging a finger at him. "I would hate to see you turned into a frog or something."

Falco chuckled. "Quit kidding around. She can't do that... can she? Miss V...?"

A mild shrug was her only response before nodding toward the door. "If you insist on going, go, Mr. Cauphix. But, please, be on your best behavior. Take Miss Schuerer with you," she hastily added, with an apologetic smile directed at the female knight.

"Damn, so much for 'no witnesses,'" Falco said with a smirk. "I'm just kiddin.' I was gonna ask you anyway. C'mon, you'll like this! Cephilia's house is huuuge. She's rich," Falco said to Thea, rubbing his hands together like a squirrel that had just found a particularly juicy stash of nuts. "And hot, not gonna lie. Way outta my league, but momma ain't raise no underachiever," he muttered under his breath. "Anyway, c'mon, It's not far," he added before darting toward the door, maneuvering through the crowd with ease.

He did, however, pause to open the door for her her, which was curiously missing its handle.

Thea Schuerer
Location: Kriegslöwe Guildhall, Tylsen

Thea mostly kept to herself, returning greetings or nodding her head a time or two, truly not much had happened, minus some new arrivals and one girl who had damaged the door that so much insistence had been placed into fixing it for fear of angering the GuildMaster. As she was about to mention but was cut short of doing so as the cookie pile was dug into, fearing she would not get any, Thea stuck one of her armored hands along the top of the basket and got a couple more.

It was then that things with the golden boy seemed to calm down a little and in his own way apologized to Falco, it was almost just as quickly he went over to the newcomer Lucia, a Noble of some sort as best as Thea could make out and proceeded to flirt with her. This time she almost did choke and coughed a little to clear her throat, surprised at the man's nature and wondering if that actually worked. Thea had her own standards that so far Razul did not match at all and his honeyed words mostly went over her head, she was just surprised he had the nerve, audacity and bravery to put them out there. Or was it foolishness?

Curious how the damaged noble would react, Thea had half a mind to help the girl out when events unfolded once more. Vivienne seemed set on looking for the woman meant to be here when Falco maneuvered to get her himself, which in turn lead to the woman casting a little doubt and addressing the Knight herself to go with him. To which Thea nods, understanding the nature of things. "As you wish Lady Yvarra." Opening her pouch and slipping a few cookies in she does add one more line towards the woman, one which as far as she knew had not been said. "I thank you for the sweets, they were rather enjoyable. May the Goddess bless you."

With that her attention switches to Falco, speaking in his strange manner she did at least understand much of what he had said this time around, though she was surprised he himself had decided to ask her anyways, or so he said.

"Hmm, I am more interested in meeting the woman who is doing so much for us than her mortal wealth.. Fortune is so easily or difficultly gained but yet so easily lost.. I have found more value in steel than gold." The hot part of his remark, even the common folk in her neck of the woods used such euphemisms. Remarking on being beneath her but that he would likely still take a shot, she did hope this woman actually couldn't turn people into frogs... More so when she met Razul.

Stifling a chuckle at that, Thea shakes her head then heads out, keeping her cloak hood down as she nodded in thanks for the door. Pausing at that, she noticed the missing handle and wasn't about to touch the door, she just hoped the one who did it fixed it and fixed it fast. As Falco darted off into the crowd, the Knight makes her way through it by taking a straight path, walking tall and proudly with her massive greatsword on her back, she parted the ground, or said excuse me to those two slow to move out of the way, as she tried keeping her fellow in view, the two having different thoughts on how to handle this situation.

Hyss noticed the tall green man step nearer to her. How could she not? She felt subsumed by him. He was basically a giant to her. She flinched away from his nod, then had a second thought about it, and gradually straightened back up, giving him a nod in return. Only the slightest of nods, though. Practically imperceptible under her hood. She doubted he'd even notice, but she nodded "in greeting" back all the same.

Though, truth be told, she felt a bit better with the large green fellow beside her. If she stood near him just right -then she'd be able to hide in the only shadow cast in there. That was a bit.. comforting, honestly. Who would've thought, huh? She would rely on someone else for shadow and to keep her hidden. She was learning things already! So subtly, she inched closer to him, to sink into the Ovil-ken's shadow.

Meanwhile, to say things were "happening" -wasn't quite right. It appeared the room had calmed down some. Probably because the flouncy boy had decided on a more subtle and self-respecting approach. Probably for the best, though it was rather brave of him to just "put himself out there" and to be who he was. That was more than what she could do... Hyss inwardly thought, feeling silently ashamed as she made sure to hunker down and tug more of her mask over her mouth. Regardless, the place had quieted down, but beyond a couple leaving to go fetch -er, someone, not much else was currently underway. So, it seemed it was time to play "the waiting game". Even though her boots were feeling antsy.

This, too, was training, though... She'd need to get used to this, Hyss figured. She'd probably be playing 'the waiting game' often on her missions. Still, Hyss couldn't help but feel a bit impatient for things to move along. It felt like she had been standing there so long already, that she had, somehow, already left her mark on that particular spot in Kriegslöwe.

Location: Arriving at Cephilia's House

The trip from the guild hall to Cephila's residence was not a long one. Falco led Thea from the market square to what could best be described as a slightly less chaotic part of town, where a collection of rather large homes and a few classier establishments were haphazardly situated on winding streets. Many of these belonged to wealthy landowners who did business in the town. The streets were noticeably less populated here. The air even smelled better, fresher.

Falco hated it.

However, that did not diminish his opinion of the woman they were sent here to summon. He seemed awfully full of himself when they arrived at the steps of Cephilia Valdergeuse's home. It had a relatively small footprint compared to those around it, but made up for its lack of girth with height. Its sooty, gray stonework was speckled with large, arched windows, and capped with a steep roof and two tall chimneys, like a pair of smokestacks. If the rumors were true, its verticality also extended underground, where her workshop was located. Falco suspected the chimneys were connected to some manner of furnace or smithy down there, for he had been inside her home once before and hadn't seen more than one hearth.

He was just about to ascend the steps when the doors opened quite suddenly and a woman emerged. "This isn't over, Cephilia! Your father will hear of this!" the woman declared, as she descended the stairs, clutching her enormous hat and the hem of her frilly dress. Due to the volume of her proclamations, it seemed quite likely Lord Valdergeuse might actually hear her all the way from the capital. Halfway down the staircase, she paused to shake her tiny fist at the door, where Cephilia's elderly manservant stood, looking rather out of sorts.

"Terribly sorry, miss," the old man said, bowing repeatedly. "So very sorry."

"I don't need your apologies. You're just the help," the woman said as she reached the bottom of the steps, nearly colliding with Falco and Thea. Her eyes locked upon them both as if she had just come face-to-face with a pair of large insects and wasn't sure if she wanted to squash them or run away screaming. "Oh... more adventurers, I see," she said with a particularly spicy flavor of passive aggressiveness. "Shouldn't you be off adventuring or something? Useless. Utterly useless!" she quipped before turning up her nose and stomping away.

"Heh, she thinks we're adventurers? Nice," Falco joked and quickly put the matter behind him. He immediately turned his attention to the butler and smiled as he ascended the steps. "Oi, Mr. Maurice! What was all that, man?"

The old man slowly shook his head, clearly exhausted by whatever had happened. Falco had only seen that woman for a few seconds and already felt exhausted by her; he could understand.

"Anyway, how ya been, old timer?" Falco flamboyantly spread his arms, looking almost Razul-esque in his showmanship. "Tell the princess her prince has arrived to present himself!"

"Oh dear... here we go again." The elderly man's shoulders noticeably sagged before turning his head inside the house: "Milady, it appears young Mr. Cauphix has arrived with a guest. Shall I let him in?"

"Tell him I'm not home," Cephilia called back from somewhere inside.

With a sigh, the old man turned to Falco and Thea: "Terribly sorry, but the lady of the house is not-"

"I can hear her," Falco said. "I CAN HEAR YOU!" he shouted into the house.

"Good. Then you can hear I'm not home," Cephilia said.

"Viv sent us! C'mon out, she wants you at the guild hall!"

Cephilia suddenly appeared behind the old man. "Oh... they're multiplying," she said as her eyes traced Thea from head to toe and back again. "That's distressing."

"Thea, Cephilia. Cephilia, Thea," Falco said, rushing through the introductions. "And, no, she's not my girlfriend. You're still the only one for me, Cephilia."

"Right. Maurice, bring the bucket. I fear I may be violently ill if this keeps up," Cephilia said, rolling her eyes. "Anyway, babysitting is a little beneath a Shuerer, I think, but I am pleased to make your acquaintance nonetheless. Cephilia Valdergeuse, at your service," she said, flashing a smile at Thea before turning back to Falco and scowling. "Maurice, Is it noon yet?"

"I think not, milady," the butler replied.

"Just checking, because I could have sworn I was instructed to appear at noon. I'm wearing two watches and neither one says noon," Cephilia said, flashing her wrist at them all. "Neither does the grandfather clock in the hallway. Nor the ones in my workshop. So, pray tell, why is this imp on my doorstep telling me to-"

"I swear, if you weren't so easy on the eyes..." Falco sighed. "Listen, Miss Vivienne sent us to get you because she wants to start the orientation early. So can you just... stop being difficult... please? It's literally the first thing she's ever trusted me to do and I don't wanna fuck this up, okay."

Under any other circumstances, Falco would be pleased to say he made Lady Cephilia smile. However, that smile came at a cost. As her lips slowly curled upwards and her cerulean eyes twinkled with the spark of inspiration, he couldn't help but feel his words had triggered something sinister in this woman. Something he said had planted a dark seed in that crafty mind of hers and he could see it taking root. But, despite her sharp words and tendency to enjoy banter far more than a lady of proper upbringing should, Cephilia was generally known as a 'good' person. Surely, she didn't have any ill intentions in mind... right?

"Mhm... yes... I nearly forgot how eager to please these fresh recruits can be. The desire to 'not fuck up,' as you so eloquently put it, is quite strong among the newly initiated. I can use that," Cephilia mused. "To the guild hall! Wait here, while I gather my things," she said, suddenly seeming quite pleased as she twirled away with a light step. "You've just given me a wonderful idea, Falion!"

"Y-yeah... that's what I was afraid of," Falco sighed.

Location: Entering the Guild Hall

The centaur sighed in relief when Cephilia finally pushed through the doors of the guild hall. Under one arm, she held a laquered black treasure chest with a golden padlock, partially concealed beneath her long pale blue overcoat, with its scale mail underlay and white fur collar. On her other hip was a golden rapier, with a very complex hilt and a trigger mechanism. Viv had often see her wear this weapon around town, matching a pair of golden wedge heels with armored anklets. Stylish as ever, the blonde cascarieth seeemed to capture eyes everywhere she went, for better or for worse.

Only twenty minutes or so had passed since she sent Falco and Thea out, but it felt like an eternity. Cephilia and Viv made eye contact from across the room and Cephilia seemed about to make her way straight for the desk, but paused. Her sharp blue gaze swiftly scanned each and every adventurer nearest to her, as if searching for something, before quickly settling on the diminutive blonde girl. There was a very brief frown, followed by an amused smirk as Cephilia knelt to retrieve something small and shiny from the girl.

Is... is that our door knob? Vivienne thought as she watched the item trade hands. Her fear was soon confirmed when Cephilia arrived at the desk and forfeited the chunk of brass to her. With a small sigh, Vivienne turned it over in her hands, pondering how these people had managed such a feat and how Razul's posse had botched the repair so badly. The screws appeared to have fallen cleanly out, as if they hadn't been tightened at all.

"Rowdy bunch we have here," Cephilia remarked. "I'll deal with that later. Business first." She hefted her treasure chest onto the desktop, placing it in front of Arien, then hopped up and took a seat beside it, crossing her legs like a queen on the throne. Her fingers drummed casually on the box's wooden surface and occasionally traced its rather large and heavy padlock, as if pondering what to do with it. After a moment, she turned to Viv: "Where's Kaira? Did she do the welcome speech yet?"

"Well, umm... about that," Vivienne said with an apologetic smile.

"Of course not..." Cephilia said. All amusement and pondering faded from her face. Vivienne could see in ehr features that her mind was made up now. The cascarieth woman clapped her hands, garnering the attention of everyone in the room, in case she didn't have it already.

"LISTEN UP, ADVENTURERS!" Cephilia said. "My name is Cephilia Valdergeuse, the Clockwork Witch, S-Ranked adventurer, and unofficial 'sponsor' of this... guild? This madhouse? Call it what you will," she said, gesturing vaguely. She theatrically lifted the box and placed it on her lap, stroking its lacquered wood as if it were made of solid gold. "I hold in this box the keys to your future: your personalized guild crests and arcanizers. Normally, this is the part where our illustrious --or some might say, 'notorious'-- guildmistress would give a fancy speech and have you all introduce yourselves, mingle a little, and receive these. But, in my humble opinion, you've had enough fun --and cookies-- for one day." She gave a sharp glance at Viv, who averted her gaze. So, what do you say we get to work, adventurers? I have your first quest, should you choose to accept it. And I have your reward," her fingers continued slowly drumming the box, "and maybe a little something extra, for those who perform exceptionally well."

Thea Schuerer
Location: Cephilia Valdergeuse's Residence - Kriegslöwe Guildhall, Tylsen

As the pair moved through the city, one thing struck Thea, it was something she seen often enough, on the way here or even where she lived. Incomes and standing were so great that when one wandered from one to the next it was as if a boundary were drawn to mark who was what, old blood and new, rich and poor. Before them stood a house that looked to belong in this area but was also out of place.. The smokestacks were partly what caught her eye as did the exclamations and antics of a 'noble'. Souring her expression at the woman, Thea says nothing but gives a curt nod. She rather wished that more Nobles would take the que of the name rather than the birthright. But that was neither here nor there.

It was then that things would unravel as they were given to doing, with the basic introductions underway after the woman had tried to get rid of them, or Falco rather, she exhales a bit and says in a warningly fashion;

"Falco..."

Before continuing with the topic at hand, the woman knowing who she was wasn't too much of a surprise, the bigger question was if it were by reputation of the family or knowledge of her father. The Dragon Slayer seemed to know Falco rather well, was this something he always done or another form of history? Pondering over this, Thea was about to explain why they were here, when Falco did so, jumping the gun. "Yes, it is as he says, we were sent to request your presence." With a raised eyebrow she repeats "Falion?" As the woman spins on her heel to depart with some new scheme in mind and instructions to wait here for her. "Understood."

On the way back, Thea was curious about the box, the horns and just why this woman was retired and spending so much money on what may end up with a few washouts, it was curious. But now was neither the time nor place for such questions and she rather doubt the woman would answer them or take kindly to it. Though if she remembered correctly the woman's family was known for craftsmen work in terms of jewelry and watch making... Did that mean she made the devices herself? Her face twitched briefly at that but was unlikely to be noticed as they arrived in the guild hall.

Reflecting on it, it was rather impressive that the cascariethian woman knew about the knob at once and had retrieved it. It seemed Thea's thoughts were correct, the Arcanizers were in fact made by her. Looking at all the rest, the two core guiding rules Thea lived by came to the forefront of her mind;

Never ask others to do what you should yourself and Lead by Example.

With that she finally did ask one of the questions that had entered her mind up to this point. "What would you have us do?"

Lucia Corinna Edelgarde

Location: Tylsen Guild Hall

"Thank you very much. If you are the baker, you have my utmost respect. They're quite delicious," Lucia expressed her gratitude to Vivienne.

Nibbling on the cookie as the others bickered a bit more and further chaos ensued, her attention was grasped by the sparkly one when he repeated her full name. She spectated his display of affection with some levity, allowing him to take her hand and press his lips to the back of it. The only thing unordinary about it was the man's general mannerisms and that pickup line. The concept of such introductions was hardly a rarity to someone of Lucia's status. The patch seemed to deter some, though her name still attracted some suitors, or perhaps this was simply how the man was raised; to be a "gentleman".

Lucia smirk broke into a soft laugh. "Quite the charmer, aren't you? Hopefully it does not fatigue you to have such a shining demeanor at all times?" She predicted that it was, regardless of what he would answer. No one was like this all the time—right?

Still, Lucia didn't take his words to hear, especially since he came in with three women quite obviously interested in "claiming" him. Whether it was just his personality or if he was looking to add another lady to his harem, the end result was the same. She played this game as well, and was not so easy to court, nor was she interested in such things.

Regardless, Lucia wouldn't have to play the game for too long as the two who departed returned with another senior adventurer. She introduced herself as Cephilia Valdergeuse. the woman seemed rather desensitized, which made sense if you made a home in this "madhouse" so to speak. It appeared as though they would be getting their feet wet sooner than later, which Lucia wouldn't complain of. As stated, they had plenty of time to mingle already, and despite having only just arrived the aristocrat was eager to advance.

Grinning at that, Lucia stepped forward as well. "So long as there is a room to place my belongings within for the time being, I stand at the ready immediately."

Gaius Karlings Kampfer
Location: Kriegslowe Tylsen Guild Hall; Lobby

As Falco and Thea departed the Guild Hall Gaius went back to quietly observing the room. Most everyone in the Guild hall started to congregate into groups. Lucia, Razul, and Vivienne remained together exchanging gossip over cookies, the Ovil-ken, Thal, and the tiny blonde girl moved off to the side near the small white haired girl, the two fox-folk stuck to themselves and Risax stood nearby kinda awkwardly keeping to himself. All this reminded Gaius a bit of those parties he and his family would attend when he was younger, just a bit poorer and with fewer people; all Gaius was missing a bit of wine and the image would be complete.

Whilst Gaius watched and listened he subconsciously started gravitating to the closest person, Risax. Without any words Gaius took up a spot beside the Arachne as he continued to observe the others it was only after Gaius reached into his cloth pouch to retrieve one of the extra cookies he swiped did he notice just how close he had gotten to Risax. "Oh Pardon me, must've been mindlessly moving closer" He said as he took a step back giving the Arachne room to maneuver. As he was close to someone Gaius decided to strike up a bit of idle chat to pass the time.

After about twenty or so minutes Gaius's attention was drawn away from Risax as the Guild Hall doors opened and a gorgeous blonde woman walked in, Thea and Falco on her heels. As the woman made her way to the reception desk Gaius watched on as she stopped and observed each of the Guild's new recruits and he winced in slight horror as she retrieved the Guild Hall's door knob from the small blonde girl. When the woman got to Risax and Gaius, Gaius gave a respectful bow to the woman. As a Valgemian noble he knew who the Valdergeuse family was, former Nobles and Merchants who made themselves known for being Gem cutters and watchmakers who defected to the Kingdom. If Gaius himself wasn't seeking refuge in the Kingdom he might've had a negative opinion of this Cephilia woman and her family but now he held no right to call the Valdergeuses traitors as he himself could be called one.

After a very brief conversation with Vivienne the woman gave a small speech in a more commanding tone than Gaius expected. She had all the recruits crests and their Arcanizers in the box she had carried here and immediately had a job for the group as a whole, not only that but she claimed to have a bonus for those who did 'Exceptionally well' which gave Gaius a bad feeling. Nonetheless however Gaius perked up not wanting to be late to respond to his senior, "A job already? Very well I am at your service"

"What a lovely crew I'll be working with." Sakura had thought to herself as she observed the patrons around the guild, but not one particular that she was interested in. She hasn't spoke to anyone yet as she standing on one corner, waiting for the orientation to start. Eventually, it finally began when a high ranking adventurer had step up and gets everyone's attention. She held a box which holds their guild crests and arcanizers, the latter of which she isn't familiar of. "Arcanizers? What are they?" Sakura thought to herself as she continued to listen to what the lady adventurer, Cephilia Valdergeuse, had to say.

The speech ends with a job offer and already, Sakura is more than interested to see what this job is. Some of the newbies have stepped forward, interested to what the quest is. Sakura followed suit. "So what's this quest you have? I don't mind the pay so long as we get the job done." Sakura spoke of confidence. She seemed to be very ready.

The would-be knight was the first to respond to Cephilia's challenge, getting straight to the point. The girl had a dutiful, no nonsense way about her, which Cephilia definitely liked, though she wondered how flexible such a person could be. Good knights, or even good soldiers, did not always make good Kriegslowen. It could be a difficult transition.

Eh, she'll do fine, Cephilia concluded. It came as no surprise that Vivienne had paired Thea with Falco, of all people. In my opinion, she should have just sent the Shuerer girl alone. Would've saved me a lot of headache. But I see her reasoning, I suppose.

As if on queue, Falco's hand shot up a moment later. "I'm in. A job's a job. Let's do it," he said quickly, despite having no idea what 'it' is yet.

There was no doubt in her mind that he'd jump right in. The boy had made himself a nuisance ever since being initiated a week ago. She heard he'd been seen all over town, doing whatever he could to scrounge up enough Feln to afford a room at a cheap inn, rather than stay at the guild hall, as if he had something to prove. What he lacked in tact and manners, he made up for in street smarts and personal drive, though she wondered if he was driving in the wrong direction.

Idiot. You should be training, not chasing petty coin. You aren't impressing anyone, Cephilia thought, but she had no chance to dwell on it before another voice spoke up.

"So long as there is a room to place my belongings within for the time being, I stand at the ready, immediately," another girl replied, a white-haired cascarieth with an eye patch.

This one had an air of nobility about her. Probably the Edelgarde girl, Cephilia thought, still trying to match faces with what had only been a list of names until now. The letters of recommendation written by the Kriegslowen who had recruited these newbies varied greatly in details. Some were quite thorough, while others revealed next to nothing.

Cephilia was about to reply to the girl's request, but Vivienne beat her to it and confirmed her suspicion: "I can take care of that, Miss Edelgarde," the centaur said, trotting forward to gather the girl's things. "I'm not entirely sure what Miss Cephilia has in mind, but your possessions will be quite safe here. You have my word."

There you go, coddling them again, Cephilia thought, slowly shaking her head in silent disapproval as she watched Viv do what Viv always does. While it was certainly the right thing to do, Cephilia thought back on her own first days as a Kriegslowen. She was hazed and treated poorly, simply because of who she was, and often wished she had used a pseudonym when she joined. But, Cephilia joined to make a point, not to run away from her family's legacy. What was this girl's reason for being here?

None of my business, Cephilia thought and pushed the matter from her mind. Edelgarde's journey was her own. We'll see what becomes of her. I just hope Viv doesn't get too carried away and make this girl a target. That kindness is a double-edged sword, you silly horse.

Ironic, considering that same 'silly horse' had shown Cephilia that same kindness, over a decade ago. Some things never change.

Meanwhile, two more adventurers spoke up. The first was a slightly more mature man in well-traveled attire and gear. Ah, that must be him, Cephilia thought. The Valgemian wash-out. Scruffier than I imagined. I give him... a week, two weeks at best. He seemed out of place in this room full of bright-eyed youngsters, many of whom looked as if they'd never drawn a sword in anger.

Don't let them run circles around you, old man, Cephilia thought with a smile, despite them appearing to be about the same age.

When the fox beastfolk spoke up, Cephilia decided now would be a good time to stop silently judging them all and maybe do something, for once. "It's simple, really, especially for someone of your skills... Miss Suzui, right?" She set the treasure chest aside and hopped down from the receptionist's desk she had been sitting upon. "Pest control," Cephilia said, pacing the floor before them. "It's time for Tylsen's annual rat hunt!" she declared, as if anyone was supposed to be excited about that.

"We just had the annual hunt... four... five months ago?" Vivienne said. "Isn't it a little soon for that?

"There's been another sighting in the square. The mangy little bastards are popping up again and the merchants' guild won't get off my ass about it," Cephilia said, wagging a finger at the centaur.

"Fair enough. They paid good money and we usually get about a year of clean streets out of it," Viv said, "But we should investigate why the problem has returned so quickly. A new nest? Changes in the ecosystem? A reduction in predatory species? There is a delicate balance-"

"First, we deal with the problem. I assure you, I will look into this matter, Viv, but if that woman shows up at my house one more time screaming about 'rat this,' and 'rat that,' I swear, I'm going to... ugh!" she mimed the act of strangling someone. After a brief pause, she took a deep breath and continued in a calmer tone. "We have enough manpower to do a full sweep of the sewer system," she said, gesturing to the adventurers gathered here. "F Rank is all about dirty work, right? Who's ready to get dirty?"

Cressey
Current Location: Kriegslowe Guildhall, Tylsen

It took her a few moments to recover from the bewildering first impression she had received when she first entered the guild, but as flaring tempers simmered down, and the chaos that unfolded before her finally came seemingly to a calm, Cressey regained her composure, walking further into the guild hall.
A tall, Ovil-kin man greeted Cressey at the door, giving voice to her thoughts.
His kind were a bit of rarity these days, her own homeland not withstanding. Cressey herself had never seen one so up close.
In any case, despite his imposing stature, he seemed to be one of the more level heads present in the room, a small, albeit welcome relief to the young adventurer.
"Indeed..." Cressey huffed in response, marching alongside the comparatively large fellow, her dissatisfaction prevalent in her tone, and in her eyes, which darted about the room to take stock of her newfound comrades.
"...But I did not travel all this way to become a part of some foolish spectacle, I came here to prove myself amongst the highest ranks of the Guild! How long must we wait here!?"
As if to answer her, the door behind Cressey opened, and in stepped a woman dressed head to toe in trinkets, accolades, and other strange memorabilia that Cressey could scarcely recognize.
A gilded, golden rapier hung from her side, joining with the chorus of clinks and jingles her body made with every poised, measured step she took into the establishment, which only seemed to add to the dominating aura she fostered, dwarfing even that of the centaur.

The fair features present on the newcomer's face were unmistakably familiar to her, a true-blooded Valgemian if she had ever seen one.
That, combined with the distinct noble air about her, was more than enough to make Cressey instantly wary of her presence.
The woman seemed to sense her apprehension, and for one cosmic moment, their eyes met.
Cressey froze in place, staring back like a deer caught before a carriage, a prey standing before a predator.
Why was she looking at her with those sharp, piercing eyes? Did she suspect something? Had she figured her out so quickly?
...Oh, no. She was just looking at the gleaming, golden doorknob still clutched in her hands.
That would make sense.
As the woman drew closer and offered her hand, Cressey obliged in handing off the now-inert bauble, albeit with some awkward hesitation on her part; not once blinking as the woman stood before her, and only releasing the breath she hadn't realized she had been holding with a long, heavy sigh, once the woman turned her back on her, resuming her scheduled guild business.
Thankfully, she had no interest in wasting any further time, breaking the excited chattering with a single booming shout.
'Cephilia Valdergeuse,' the name the woman mentioned as she announced herself before the group, stuck to Cressey's mind; like her face, it was faintly familiar to her, some long, lost memory of her old life, which Cressey was more than happy to push deep into the further recesses of her mind, though it would stubbornly come crawling back, tickling at the back of her neck each time she looked at the woman's regal face.

After making her introduction, Cephilia presented the group with a large, wooden crate, along with an invitation to their first actual task.
Several initiates rose excitedly to take up the task, among them an older gentleman, dressed in thick, sturdy scalemail; his aged face bringing to mind, another, more fondly remembered figure of her past.
Another to raise their voice was a beastkin of perplexing color, a bow held at her back, just behind a large, lavender cloud of a tail, that seemed almost to pull Cressey in with it's soft fluff.
Several others joined, with varying levels of certainty; a cascarieth with a rather shifty looking appearance, donning a hooded cloak, and a large, black eyepatch, obscuring much of her face from view.
That long-haired 'woman' Cressey had seen at the market was among those to speak up, though, having gotten a closer look at them as they passed her by, and having heard more of their voice, Cressey concluded that she had been, in fact, been mistaken about their gender.
Perhaps you should consider cutting your hair, Cressey thought to herself, sending a glare over his way.
The man was unique in that he had made two poor first impressions with her; the first having seen him get thrown out of a store, the next when she first entered the guild, him being one of the two sources of the earlier chaos, only being held at bay by the centauress brandishing one of her swords.
"I accept!" Cressey sharply exclaimed, excitedly joining in with the numerous others, more than eager to prove herself, just as many of her peers were.
Puffing out her chest, she proudly adds, "Give me your most grueling, difficult tasks, and I shall see them--"
Before she could finish boasting her abilities, Cephilia elaborated on their 'prestigious' first duty, prompted by the tall, errant knight standing by the doorway.
"R-Rats?" Cressey blurted in disbelief, her earlier enthusiasm slowly deflating, unlike that feigned by the woman before her.
"Is that really it? You've nothing more...challenging?"

Thea Schuerer
Location: Kriegslöwe Guildhall, Tylsen

Listening to what the lady had to say about the objective was, she frowned a little but didn't dispute the orders for what they were. She needed the Feln, money was money and killing rats beat being a bandit killing peasants. Though she hoped to move on from this. Still how the doorknob breaker had acted didn't sound all that good and Vivienne had brought up some good points as well, prompting Thea to speak at length.

"Rats cannot be dismissed so easily, they are clever creatures, always growing in number and can spread sickness and filth. We often counted upon cats, small dogs and hawks to deal with them in the countryside, but at times a more direct touch is needed, they can grow to be awfully large and aggressive. While I don't think any of them can do us serious harm, I am in alien territory... As I would assume most of you are, the sewers in this land I am told are massive with walking paths and channels for the water, among other things to flow out of the city. Dark, damp and infectious. Plus, we are hunting creatures that will flee from us, so we may wish to split into smaller teams, box the vermin in as much as we can and slaughter them all. There is also the possibility that Lady Yvarra brought up, There may be something driving the rats out. Be it an insane homeless man or goblins I cannot say, maybe the last hunt did not thin them enough and there is nothing."

With a shrug she continues. "Either way they must be slayed but do not drop your guard because they are just rats, infections can happen from the filth. Such a death is ill befitting a Warrior."

With that and the unsettling reality of manmade tunnels of vast size to serve this city and the darkness they likely invited; Thea starts setting the travel items she had on the counter and checks the oil in her lamp, securing it with a little rope. "Maybe Falco can give us some information on what is below, or the Guild? Also I am not sure, but are these sewers big enough for our crossbow friend to fit down below? I rather not learn this when there is no room for one of us to get around." While she could crouch down but he or she could not make himself smaller to the sides if one of them had to move up front. Risax could be in troubles down there and there was still the issue of if the rest would be willing to split into smaller groups... Well provided they wanted to go down there at all and didn't leave. With that her gaze settles on the noble girl for a brief few instances.

Gaius Karlings Kampfer
Location: Kriegslowe Tylsen Guild Hall; Lobby

Deep down Gaius knew it would be something like this, it's just the right kind of test for fresh recruits to a guild. "Go, find and eliminate a rat nest here, or help with an infestation of termites" and the such, Lady Valdergeuse's note of a bonus which had initially worried Gaius now sounded like easy Feln. Bringing his hand up to his chin Gaius immediately started plotting as he rubbed his thumb along his stubble. Rats were easy prey for well armed adventurers even amateurs can take down large numbers of them when they're in a party, the only downside is that Rat blood is hard to clean off a blade. With no money left Gaius couldn't afford to dirty his Jian; his first order of business would be to procure a club of some kind, second would be finding a way to restrict the rats movements to make them even easier to smash.

A sudden outburst from the small blonde girl drew Gaius's attention, "R-Rats? Is that really it? You've nothing more...challenging?"

"Awfully boastful that one" Gaius thought as he gave her another once over and his attention was drawn to her lance. Surely such a small girl wouldn't be able to use something like that Unless, With brief panic he looked between Cephilia and the small blonde girl. "Is that Mithril?" To Gaius's knowledge only The Empire forges weapons in the material AND it's highly expensive. "Who is this child? A Noble? Merchant's daughter? No common adventurer would have such a thing. Whatever, it's fine, that's a question for another time." Gaius's attention is needed on task.

Lady Schuerer spoke up shortly after Gaius calmed down, she was half reprimanding half reasoning why dealing with the rats was a necessary task to the blonde girl. "Either way they must be slayed but do not drop your guard because they are just rats, infections can happen from the filth. Such a death is ill befitting a Warrior. Maybe.. Falco can give us some information on what is below, or the guild? Also I am not sure, but are these sewers big enough for our crossbow friend to fit down below? I rather not learn this when there is no room for one of us to get around."

With a few nods of understanding Gaius chipped in to what Thea was saying, "Well said Lady Schuerer," he paused turning to Falco before speaking again. "You've been here the longest, your knowledge of the city is going to be key for our success." Gaius turned to Risax. Suddenly his thought from earlier was complete and a rather sinister smirk appeared on his face; "As for Sir Risax here, I have an idea that'll make you useful even if you can't join us in the sewers, although it does depend on how strong your webs are."

Risax more or less stayed were he was. someone moving closer to him their name was Gaius right? Well they apologised for getting so close Risax giving a little smile. “Oh no it’s fine I guess I do take up a lot of well space“ he’d reply calmly, happy to strike up conversation with the man, mostly just simple things like why they decided to join the guild in the first place and whatever over little tid bits that came up, in fact it was rather enjoyable.

twenty or so minutes later everyones attention was drawn towards the door as an individual with a great air of importance to her walked in placing a chest upon the desk Risax was already feeling excitement bubbling up, he‘d assumed the chest contained arcanizer‘s meaning the woman was..

His thoughts cut off by the woman who’s name was Cephilia, yelled to get everyone’s attention not only was she an S RANK adventurer but the box indeed contained the Arcanizer‘s they‘d be gifted. “Oh yeah I’m total ready to get to work“ Risax would blurt out excitedly obviously the Arachne was just raring to go. Finally he could do something more interesting then walking form town to city to town selling silk and other stuff, and actually do something useful with his life. However his enthusiasm was somewhat curved by “pest control” … a rat hunt… Risax sighed little this reminded of when his father would get him to kill the rats hiding in the stock normal silk would be on the ground to allow some detention of the rats movement’s, then you’d just skewer em with a leg.

but their was more to it they needed to work out why they’d returned so quickly a mystery? now they where talking. “Ok sure we should be able to do that easy” Risax replied confidently flicking his head up only for the arachne’s silvery hair to get in the way of his face. Thea however did make a good point.. sewers could get tight and a crossbow wasn’t overly efficient when dealing with rats. “Oh well don’t worry even if my weapon of choice isn’t the most effective I do have a backup“ Risax said. Lifting the saddlebag and quiver from one side underneath both was a sheath strapped to his side it containing a long sword. “If not that I can alway just stab them with my legs” Risax added confidently. Attention turning to Gaius again who asked Risax about the strength of his webbing seemingly concoction some plan based on its strength. “well some of the strongest webbing you can find and the glue could easily hold a horse“ Risax replied somewhat boastful in a sales rhetoric sort of way.

Thal couldn't help but chuckle at the statement of the doorknob breaker. So the girl already had high hopes and goals for what she'll do in the guild. Youth really did come with passion, didn't it? Still, he could respect that. It would be interesting to try and catch up to them.

Thal noticed the other younger girl inch closer as if hiding behind him. It was rather odd, if he was being honest. He gave her a small wave to catch her attention. "Is something wrong?" He questioned, more out of curiosity than genuine worry. Was she shy? Maybe he made a mistake with trying to open a conversation between the two of them. Still, he patiently waited for the response as they also waited for the start of their ceremony.

It wasn't long before that boy Falco and his companion came back with a woman in tow. The woman proceeded to take the doorknob from Cressey's hands and spoke a bit with the centaur. Ah, they didn't seem too angry about it thankfully. In fact, they seemed to gloss over it entirely once the doorknob had been retrieved.

In any case, Miss Valdergeuse proceeded forward. She has quite a title to her name as well as a hefty ranking. That was rather impressive. She didn't look any older than himself! Well, early starts and brilliant minds know how to make a name for themselves. He couldn't help but wonder what sorts of stories Cephilia held with her. She held up a box and Thal stiffened at the mention of arcanizers. Right. They were all given one at their induction. His trainer had mentioned it before but he also said that he'll send a message to not give Thal any. He was sure that Miss Valdergeuse did get that message, but he'll still ask at a later date since it didn't seem like they'd be getting their crests until after this quest.

Thal stood in attention as the others agreed to the quest. They were already being put into work, huh? Well, fine by him. The quest in question was... pest control? It would seem that Tylsen had a bit of a recurring rat problem. Thal remembered the nasty little bastards and how detrimental they were to his previous town's harvest when there were too many. As Thea would soon make clear, they often used predatory pets to keep the rat population in check. In some cases, hunters would go down to cull the population again when it got too out of control. It seemed like this was a new wave of pests that should have been under control for the rest of the year though, which was odd, but you sometimes can't control the spread.

One of them complained about the simplicity of this task. Miss Valdergeuse did say that F rank would just be small-time dirty work. He doubted that new initiates would be given merchant guard deals right off the bat. The aspiring knight went on an explanation as to why this was essential and Thal agreed with her words.

"Rats are no joke to catch. That should provide you a bit of challenge if you're really looking for it." Thal added to Thea's words. "Besides, don't you think it would be a little fun to explore the town using its sewers?" Thal mentioned jokingly with a shake of his head. He turned to the spider beastkin. "I believe the problem lies less on you being able to use your crossbow and more of... if you can enter." Thal responded to Risax's reassurances. "But considering this is a rather big town, hopefully, the sewers are big enough that you'll be able to maneuver well, friend."

When she heard the low voice of the tall Ovil-ken beside -well more in front of- her, Hyss's chilly gaze flicked over to him under the lip of her hood. "N-no.." The little cobra stammered, finding her voice, that wasn't so often used. "Nothing's wrong.." She seemingly hadn't been prepared for his sudden chatter. She wasn't so sure how she felt about conversing with her "shadow-maker".

A moment later, her eyes were drawn once more to the front, as the two who left returned. Another woman in tow. It was a striking Cascarieth. She announced herself as Cephilia Valdergeuse, The Clockwork Witch. A ranked 'S' adventurer! Hyss had heard about this Cascarieth through rumors. With "Clockwork Witch" being the primary moniker used in those rumors.

Hyss listened carefully, and her eyes widened. That box held the Arcanizers?! Through rumor, the 'Clockwork Witch' made them! If it was to be believed this woman -this woman was the maker of those mystic, wondrous devices! Hyss felt herself in awe. Miss -no, Madam Valdergeuse was the designation of this woman! The small ninja wanted to follow this woman thoroughly and dutifully, as well!

First job?! -Hyss didn't care about the reward. She took a step forward. "I want in, Madam Valdergeuse!" Her voice rising out, through the commotion of others going forward, squeaked from the back. She was ready for this first job! More than ready to get started! Ready to learn! Ready to prove herself! At the job mentioned, her apparent enthusiasm fell off, and Hyss fell back a step.

Hyss deadpanned a bit beneath her mask. Rats? That was the first so-called mission?! Her first mission? No way could that be. She had not considered this type of work would be their domain when thinking of joining the guild. Their domain, now her domain.

Some girl -the short one.. the other short one questioned their current mission. Quickly voicing her desire for something more challenging. Challenge, or lack thereof, was not the reason for Hyss' on misgivings on this current quarry.

Still, Hyss was not one to turn down obvious direction and growth. She would religiously follow the orders of her superiors. Only the ninja-in-training was failing to see the direction and growth she would gain from killing rats. Certainly thinning their numbers was a good thing, that was for sure. And with what the tall knightess woman said, Hyss was feeling a bit better about this whole thing. But still... she couldn't shake the feeling that her skills simply were neither necessary for a mission of this caliber, nor were they right for it. Making Hyss feel a bit lost and much more nervous, than when she had originally spoke up. She didn't doubt, in future endeavors, she would be using sewer systems more often -- for various reasons. But she did not believe her current skills were at all useful down there in the moist, wet, slippery pipes. The darkness was palpable, but it was a communal darkness. For everyone at hand, which was not useful for Hyss at all, who required others to stand out so she could remain hidden. Not to mention -the target of their quarry was rats. The rodents made their home in the dark, could navigate it better than she could, and were far more numerous than the girl liked. As she was simply more "specialized" in offing one primary, large target. Or so she believed.

For all her fretting, it was a bit ironically humorous, considering snakes were the predators of rats. You'd think Hyss would feel right at home.

Hearing the knightess claim the 'Warrior' designation almost stirred something within Hyss, like she also wished to claim such. However, snake-girl knew deep down that that was simply not the case. While others around her were most certainly what you'd call 'warriors', or posed to head that way, and some were knights, and others fighters. Hyss was not amongst their group. She was a unconventional, and quiet, and unseen. Or hoped to be. It was lonely, and not as openly praiseworthy, but it had its place. Still, a part of her wanted to claim 'Warrior' as well. Maybe she could be an ounce so selfish?

Her eyes flicked over to the speaking spider man. So she wasn't the only Beastfolk about with -er- "unique" talents. She found it somewhat impressive to hear his webbing could hold a horse. And that he could simply skewer the rats with his legs. He sounded so confident in how he used his unique Beastfolk traits... Hyss felt a bit envious of that, and a bit pathetic that she begrudged hers. The Arachne speaking of his traits only put an uncomfortable crick in her neck that made Hyss squirm and crack.

"Can't we not just lay traps for them?" Hyss suggested, almost in argument with the Ovil-ken's first words. "Scare them, then lead them directly towards the traps we set. That would be the best way," she continued. "No crossbows necessary. Or swords, or anything but our more developed minds."

She stepped forward once more, and Hyss bent her head. "Madam Valdergeuse, I once again pledge myself to this mission." She looked up. "I will not fail you!" Hyss' insides were buzzing with anticipation and excitement. She was extremely enthused to finally receive an Arcanizer, and begin her journey here. Her attitude towards this was probably a bit surprising, contrasting greatly with her prior gloomy presence.

A shining light emerged from the crowd—the source being a polished, well-crafted headpiece of replica gold. Whipping his cape around, ✨Razul Dazzle✨ came to the front, brushing his slick hair back with a hand. His mere stance let everyone know how ready he was to take on their very first mission.

His first order of attention, though, was to the small, blonde girl. "Little one, please, I believe you've mistaken the purpose of an adventurer." He knelt down to her height, softening his countenance as he normally would to a child. "While it is true that this position can earn excellent fame, it is our first and foremost duty to help those in need." The hero reached into his back pocket, retrieving a singular piece of purple taffy, wrapped lightly in paper. "You can have this!" He placed it in her palm before rising back up—and patting Cressey's head.

"If the end result is ensuring the people's well-being, then naturally I'm joining this venture." Razul perked his head up a certain to angle to accentuate his confidence. "I myself have led parties to deal with such infestations in my hometown. I've had the experience of saving three particular civilians from sudden attacks launched by creatures such as these." In fact, they followed him around everywhere since then...

And if it was the sewers they were roaming in for the mission, that likely meant linear tunnels and little to no light. The group discussed this, but by the sound of it they took to waiting on Falco for more information. "I'll provide any assistance wherever necessary. I'll try not to let any of you guys get scratched under my watch." Razul didn't have much else to add on, as they'd all said the same case of 'do not underestimate the rats.' While waiting for whoever to provide more information, his eyes wandered back to the person he'd talked to earlier.

✨Razul Dazzle✨ waltzed beside Lucia, having had their brief meeting interrupted. Her response from then had caught him off guard, and he felt... 'obligated' to provide some words. "To answer your earlier question, miss..." Razul's tone quieted to a whisper. "I'm just doing what I think works." His complexion notably laxed for a few moments. A drop of honesty couldn't hurt, here.

Lucia Corinna Edelgarde

Location: Tylsen Guild Hall

Feeling the approach of the centaur, Viv whisked Lucia's belongings and assured her of their safety. The woman's stature was fearsome, but her attitude only strayed further into contradiction--Well, aside from that brief moment with the harem. It was obvious staying on her good side would lead to all manner of advantages, not excluding avoiding a smiting. Regardless, Lucia took comfort in how straightforward and doting their mentor was.

"Much gratitude, Lady Yvarra," Lucia answered with a smile and a polite bow before turning back toward Cephilia. "In that case--Come again?"

Her eagerness bled from her face and into a deadpan. The Caskarieth noble blinked a couple times as everyone gave their opinions on the matter, mostly on how to accomplish the quest rather than their target being rodents. Rodents! Vermin! Aside from the filth and Lucia actually caring for her hygiene, they were going to waste their time hunting rats?

Lucia glanced at the previously silent girl who suggested the use of traps. Giving a few curt nods, the aristocrat agreed.

"Indeed. Would it not be preferable to set traps and be done with it?" How else would they deal with the problem? Proactively hunt the vermin like game? Preposterous. "They are simple rodents, are they not?"

She scowled somewhat, still not agreeing with the use of resources. Though, ultimately, Lucia would do what she must. She didn't come this far to turn away because of some overgrown mice. Still, it was perplexing to her, which may not be that surprising to others given her upbringing. Others were even warning of the danger the rats brought. Of course they were nasty, diseased creatures. But they were tiny rodents nonetheless, weren't they? Did anyone really need to be warned of them?

It was at this point, Lucia noted the stare of the knightess. Glancing back at her, the noble's eye narrowed slightly, as if challenging her accusing glare. Though, her attention was again captured by Razul as he approached her. Leaning slightly to pick up on his whisper in the rest of the conversation, she raised a visible brow. He was going to be an interesting one. So flamboyant before, but his demeanor intentionally faltered a moment. He had some deeper layers to him.

"Hm. Aren't we all?" Lucia murmured in response as she folded her arms.

Rats? Not his first pick, but he knew this is what F Rank looks like, which is why Falco was so quick to jump in. Also, he didn't want to be caught hesitating. Adventuring is a job after all and potential clients won't seek out an adventurer who turns down missions. He had to get his name and face out there, make the whole city know him. 'Do what you gotta do, so you can do what you wanna do.' He couldn't remember who'd taught him that mantra, but --unlike most gems of wisdom-- it had stuck with him.

"There's always one..." Cephilia said with a slow, lamentable shake of her head when the tiny doorknob thief vocalized her impatience and demanded a more challenging quest.

At least we get to kill stuff, Falco thought while the others rebuked her, and spoke of the dangers of rats and debated how best to tackle the problem. There were interesting ideas all around and he was finally beginning to get a feel for the different personalities in this room and how they approach challenges. He had heard most F Rank missions were manual labor or standing around on guard duty. He was okay with some heavy lifting, but the idea of getting paid to do nothing bothered him more than most might think it would.

At least they would be doing something that made a difference and helped the town. Maybe if they did exceptionally well, the merchant's guild would take notice. If that woman he'd seen on Cephilia's steps was any indication of what the average merchant's guild rep was like, he doubted it, but rich assholes could be just as easy to please as they are to anger.

But then Thea said something that surprised him. And, to be honest, delighted him a little. She actually thought he had something to offer! Nice. Wrong, but nice.

"Awfully bold of you to assume I'm some sort of sewer savant. Damn, what kind of guy do you take me for?" Falco remarked in jest when she suggested he might shed some insight on the layout of the sewer system. To be fair, he'd done quite a bit of scurrying around Achelreide's subterranean maze, but Tylsen's was still on his 'to do' list. "But I suppose I've been hangin' round this place longer than most of you lot, so I can see why you'd think I'm... reliable. I mean, I have one of those faces," he added with a smug grin. He prayed the sarcasm wasn't lost on her.

"All I know is there's tunnels down there... like, an underground river... cave network... or something.... but that's just what i've heard..." With every pause, he glanced at Cephilia for confirmation, since she seemed to pride herself on being 'the smart one.' Maybe her skillset encompassed urban development? Unfortunately, she just folded her arms and turned up her nose at them all. Either she didn't know or didn't want to tell them. Fortunately, he quickly shifted his attention to Viv, who nodded along, confirming Falco's information... which earned a slight glare from Cephilia.

Okay, so she does know a little and just wants to make things difficult. Right, got it, Falco thought with a wry frown. He was beginning to see a pattern with this woman. Also, his hopes of asking her to teach him magic or something once they get their arcanizers was beginning to look like a distant fantasy. Taking newbies under her wing was clearly not Cephilia Valdergeuse's way.

"The best way to find out is to get your asses down there," Cephilia said, to no one in particular.

"Now, now. Gathering intel and formulating a plan is a very important part of being an adventurer," Vivienne said, raising her finger skyward like a lecturing schoolmarm. Was she lecturing them or Cephilia? "Never underestimate your enemy. And don't take any quest for granted. And be prepared for... ummm... difficult quest givers. Clients do so love to exclude key information. It happens all the time. Perhaps I should go, as a guide...."

"Viv, you're the size of a house," Cephilia said.

"Rude!" Falco spat back, despite Viv not appearing offended at all. In fact, she seemed to blush ever so slighty. Damn, these two are weird...

"Sorry... an outhouse," Cephilia corrected, rolling her eyes at his sudden defense of the centaur. "No, you can't go, Viv. I forbid it. They must do this alone. Following your gigantic horse butt everywhere won't help. Once we've seen what they can do alone, you can invite them back to your farm for some private lessons and cookies or whatever it is you do there. And, to answer one other question," she shifted her attention to Risax, "You'll fit just fine in most of the passages, spider boy, but it won't be fun. The narrowest sections might be problematic, but if a walking outhouse can make it, so can you."

Viv giggled. "What can I say, I am overstuffed with love," she teased, clapping lightly. "Anyway, if there are no further questions, we can meet at the clocktower in... hmm... I think a half hour should suffice? I can show you the easiest way underground from there and explain the layout a little before turning you loose to do what adventurers do best!"
