Taking Flight

Welcome to the legendary El Dorado. This vast, modern city is an island paradise. The streets, paved in gold, seem to stretch on forever; though, if you do happen to find their end, you'll discover crystal blue waters which stretch to the horizon on every side. Though the city's streets are held by its citizens, above, dragons and hippogriffs rule the skies. The creatures have their very own paradise in El Azul, a vast field of magic high above the clouds that provides them with anything they need. These beasts, the dragons especially, are extremely volatile by their own nature, and have been known to reign chaos down upon the city. However, a select group of citizens, mages calling themselves the Ardent, possess the skill of embodying these creatures. They are able to command the beasts, harnessing their power in order to travel, ensure the safety of the city, or use for their own personal gain. While the hippogriffs are merely vessels, harmless and peaceful for the most part, the fierce dragons have their own consciousness, thoughts, and agendas. When embodying a dragon the Ardent must grapple with the dragon's own voice in their head, and the fiercer the beast, the harder it is to control. If a dragon's consciousness gains control while you are embodying it, you will be trapped there, consumed by the creature, and powerless to stop it from whatever havoc it wreaks.

Guidelines

1) Site rules.

2) Be free with your writing style but try as best as possible to keep up thematic continuity.

3) Please write in third person, it's really distracting otherwise.

4) Don't really know what else to say except for "don't be a dick" basically.

Please include your character's name, age, attributes, motivation, if they are one of the Ardent, and the role they fill in this society.

So here's me:

Ri'kovu, 17. He's of average height, fit, broad-chested, with thick brown hair flowing down to his chest and a shock of gold that runs down his left side from root to tip. He has striking blue eyes and high cheekbones. He has a large burn mark on his right arm, in the shape of a half-moon, which he earned in a childhood encounter with a particularly ferocious dragon. A student of the Ardent, he can embody common hippogriffs and some small dragons. He is exceedingly clever and deceptively charming, and a master of misdirection. Born to a whore in the slums of the city who died early in his childhood, Ri'kovu has mostly raised himself: an illiterate scoundrel, a thieving street rat, his only friend the dagger at his belt. That is, until he discovered the Ardent, who took him in and schooled him in the ways of mages. Ri'kovu still has no hope of making anything of himself here in the bustling El Dorado, but once he masters his skill of embodiment and repays his debt to the Ardent, he means to take flight to somewhere new and never look back.

Are you allowed to be a dragon? :o ))
I considered this but I'm leaning towards "no" as if you're one of the Ardent you'd be voicing the internal monologue of both your character and the dragon under their control.

Taylor Rose, 16. She's about 5' 2'', pretty skilled at sports, straight dark chocolate brown hair that fades out into a lighter caramel color. She has mossy green eyes that are dotted with specks of brown. She has a few freckles on her face and rosy cheeks as well as long, black eyelashes. She has a small scar that twirls around her right index finger like a vine from a thug she was kidnapped by when she was 14 that took a knife to her finger and spun it around it, making a thin delicate line that hardly pierced her skin, but left a mark. He was drunk and not the most sane person so he had no reason for his actions. She soon escaped, but her parents left while she was gone without a trace or explanation why and she currently lives in her old home which is a fair size. She works part-time at a day care to pay for her house and food. She met the Ardent one day and soon learned the ways of the mages. She can embody small dragons and some hippogriffs. She is very smart, friendly, caring, optimistic, and protective. She has good fighting skills and can use a few types of weapons if needed as well as being able to understand things others don't like other people's feelings or moods.

Kanza Innu is 19. She is 5"6, of average weight, and has a soft tan. Her hair is a dark, curly brown that she typically ties up into a ponytail. Her eyes are also a deep, dark brown. Kanza is typically seen wearing her large, golden hoop earrings and lavish amounts of eye makeup. Her parents are both wealthy and excellent mages in the Ardent, and they have encourage their daughter to follow along in their footsteps. However, it turns out that Kanza does not quite possess the level of talent that her parents do, and she is only able to manage to embody hippogriffs. However, Kanza adores the style and grace of the hippogriffs and finds the dragons slightly terrifying. At first, Kanza can seem a bit stand-offish and stuck up, but she will quickly warm up to people and offer to share the things she has with her friends. She can also appear to be a bit ditsy and ignorant.

James Helmer. 21. He is 6'1, and built quite lean. His hair is a dark brown, generally dishevelled mess, and it descends to slightly past his shoulders, and his dark green eyes are more often then not partly obstructed by his bangs. This dishevelled appearance is misleading, however. James is from an obscenely rich family, and therefore he was raised as if he was of royal blood. Everything he wanted was within his grasp; everyone he knew from an early age was at his beck and call. These circumstances led to James being rather conceited, and his desire for power, wealth and status is very unsettling.

James joined the Ardent mages at the age of 11. His grandfather had been a master at taming dragons, and the same natural skill flowed through James. He quickly rose above the skill level of most of his peers, and he is at the stage where he can control moderately powerful dragons relatively easily. He hopes that his magic will aid him in gaining even more influence in El Dorado. He also has a more just stake in the matter however; he desperately wants to find and tame the dragon that bested his grandfather, and this idea of revenge is an almost constant thought in the back of James' mind, eating away at him.
