The night was overcast and the moon was often hidden behind passing clouds. The city streets were lively with nightlife and the sounds of cars rushing echoed in the alleyways.Clothed in a black hoodie and matching black pants,Marley Oaken ran over her plan in her head.Get in using the entrance in the alleyway.Get the file.Get out.Simple enough, she thought with a confirming nod, pulling the hood up over her head and bringing some of her hair forward to help in hiding her face as well.It was a little after midnight and she figured the barracks shouldn't be too crowded at that time.Hopefully it wouldn't be or that would make her job a whole lot harder.Anonymous had definitely stressed the prize she would receive if she could succeed in swiping that elusive government file right out from under the police's nose.It was everything she wanted: a way out of the city that wanted her locked up,a way out of the country that held that city, and enough money to change her appearance and everything about her life.It was perfect and all she had to do was break into the barracks and get that file. She had pulled off difficult heists before. This one would be no different...hopefully.It all rode on her not being spotted,as it usually did. That was why she waited until that time to make her move. All in hopes of it being dead in the barracks.Even if it was busy in one area, though, the area where they keep all documents and similar things shouldn't be too busy. What would they be doing around there after midnight? So,after taking a deep breath,Marley started over to the back door of the barracks which, from her information, was near to the storage room. The shadows aided in her protection until she got to the door, where one lone orange light perched, but it seemed like no cameras. They were probably hidden, but from what she gathered, nobody had found them yet. That information had better be right...
Marley was an expert lock pick,so the somewhat intimidating lock connected to the doorknob would not stand a chance. She took out her tool from her pocket and began to carefully work away the lock. When that satisfying "click" of the opening lock sounded, she smirked slightly, pleased that it was going so far so good. Before she opened the door, she glanced around, trying to make sure there was no camera in sight and that nobody was lurking around trying to spoil her efforts. With no signs of anything that could slip her up,she slowly opened the door, being careful to make as little noise as possible.Inside she found that the lights were on,but the area was deserted. There was no relief in the fact that there were no people around, because those bright lights could point her out.She definitely didn't look like she belonged in that building. She had to work quickly. The storage room was just a quick sprint down the hall and soon she was picking the lock on that door.Paranoid, are they? She thought with a smirk as she worked on the lock. Her face went serious once again when she opened the door and entered, carefully closing it behind her in hopes that she wouldn't draw attention to it.Now...Anonymous didn't know what cabinet it would be in...all he knew was that it wasn't in any special area...not smart,in my opinion, but it makes my job easier, she thought as she headed over to one of the filing cabinets and worked on getting it open.Everything seemed to be locked in that joint. All she could hope was that she would find the file before somebody found her.And get out before somebody found her,but she would worry about that step when she got to it.Right now she had to focus on finding the file.
There was no keeping the drawer quiet as she pulled it out and that set Marley on edge even more than the bright lights in the hallway had.She needed to be quiet.Noise would draw attention to the area and she didn't want that. The first drawer had nothing she was interested in and neither did the rest of that cabinet. She was forced to move onto the next...then the next...then the next.Just when she was beginning to think Anonymous had been wrong, she pulled out a drawer that seemed quite interesting.Juicy files were packed inside and if she wasn't so focused on getting the government one and getting out of there she might've just had to swipe a couple other ones. They would have drawn a nice price from certain people she knew. However, the moment she laid her eyes on that beautiful, life changing file -which,it should be added that her and her parents had never targeted during the mayor's house's raid- she forge about all of that and grabbed it as quickly as she could. It was beautiful. It was in a simple manilla envelope, but the big black letters that read "TOP SECRET" would have been music to her ears if it could make noise. This would change her life forever. No more running from the cops,no more thievery,no more worrying that she might not be able to buy a meal.Meh,the questionable people she did business surprisingly had businesses, well, some of them did,and she was always welcome there. At night,of course. She couldn't risk being spotted during the day. There was a price on her head, after all.But now she wouldn't have to worry about that!Anonymous would get her out of the country and she could start anew!If only her parents were free to experience it with her...oh,well,you snooze, you lose.Especially when you snooze on a high-profile heist that the cops found out about quicker than anticipated.
Marley snapped out of her daydream and looked around, making sure she hadn't missed anything. She was still alone and nothing had changed in the room.Good.She almost pulled the same thing her parents did.Carefully, she slid the draw back in place. She couldn't leave that open and risk having the cops right on her trail. She needed to get out in the clear and make it to the predetermined location where Anonymous would either meet her to get the file himself or have somebody there waiting for her.It was outside of the city,in the woods off of the highway where they would be safe and unseen. There was no way for her to lock them again, but she checked and made sure the drawers looked like they had when she first came in.Everything was going as planned...
It had been a long and tiring day. Peter leaned on the station's coffee machine as he waited for his coffee cup to be filled, Thinking about the events that took place. It was six am when he got the call from his boss. A 13 years old girl had vanished and he was assigning him the case. He never liked missing people's cases because they were always a race against the clock. With every second that passes the chances of finding the kidnapped alive or even their body become a fraction less. He had already failed a kidnapping case a few months ago, it was the only true failure of his career. A 19 years old boy was kidnapped and even after working on the case 24/7 with an entire team of kidnapped case specialists from the force it wasn't enough. As the sun began to disappear behind the hills they found the boy's body in an abandoned gangster's hideout. The people responsible were life-sentenced in jail but it never felt like a victory for him, how could it? He failed to save the boy. When he left his home this morning he had sworn that he will do everything in his power to find the girl.
Ofcourse he's been working on his own ever since he lost his partner who was killed in a gun fight with some wanted criminals around a month ago. Peter took it pretty hard, Jason was not only his partner but also his best friend and he was greatly depressed. He never expected it to happen, not like this. He was on a vacation when it happened as he felt he needed some days off to cool down. He half blamed himself for his partner's death.
And as such he started working on the case on his own. He first went to speak to the girl's parents. They were good people and truly devastated and horrified about the fact that their daughter didn't come back yesterday. They had no idea where she could be and all they knew is that her school was only a 13 minutes walk from home and she always came home after school walking on her own, but not yesterday. Peter spent the better half of the day looking for clues and talking to every eye witness he could find. He was getting nowhere until he found out that she was walking away from the school with a young man in his 20s and he was given a close enough description of him. This information was provided by a man who knew the girl and lived on the way she usually takes to go home. He found the identity of the man and went to his house. The man was very friendly and didn't seem like he could even hurt a fly, unless he was a brilliant actor. He entered his house and talked to him for about 15 minutes but the man didn't seem to know anything about the girl and never admitted to seeing her. And he had a friend that confirmed he was with at the time the girl usually goes back from school. He was convinced that the man had nothing to do with it and was leaving the house when he heard some soft noise from under the floor tiles as he was walking. He didn't act like he noticed anything and as soon as he was out of the house he called in a team and they searched the house. The girl was inside a small storage room under the house. She was still alive and didn't seem to be hurt. The man was apprehended.
Peter took his refilled cup of coffee and started walking back to his station, he was in a good mood. He found the girl and returned her to her parents. He didn't know what time it was now but he knew it was around midnight. He had been working on the case file for the past few hours and finally finished it. Now all he has to do is hand it over and he can finally go home. He took the file from his station and went to speak to Ryan who was responsible for keeping the records. Ryan was typing furiously on his keyboard.
"Hey Ryan, here's the case." He said as he offered the file for him.
" Peter can't you see I'm kinda busy here? How hard can it be to put a file in a record cabinet. I mean good job today but seriously grow up and go put the file on your own. Make me proud of you for once."
Peter Laughed "That was the most emotional speech you've ever given Ryan. Alright I shall make you proud today."
Peter started heading for the room, he was still wearing his uniform and weapon. He had been to lazy and tired to take off anything for the past few hours. And the station was practically empty beside him and a few others that have desk jobs. As he reached the room he put the coffee cup on a table next to the door then swiftly opened the door. Peter was stunned for a few seconds as he looked inside... There was someone in there, someone wearing black hoodie and clothes. He instinctively reached for his gun and pointed it at the person. He walked forward a little but and said in a low and confused voice. "Don't move! Get down on your knees and put your hands on your head."
Marley had just started towards the door, feeling somewhat confident that she would pull this whole thing off.If she did,it was definitely the most high profile swipe she'd ever accomplished in her "career".Her parents would be proud...if they ever found out in those jail cells of theirs. It seemed like them not finding out was more probable just because the whole thing was a secret.Nobody would find out about it until after the cops announced it to the public and even then they wouldn't know who actually accomplished the feat since she had tried her best to hide her face.Oh,well,it wasn't like she needed their praise, since she wouldn't be able to hear it anyways. It would have been nice to feel that sense of pride from her parents being proud of her,though...did she miss her parents? She would deny it.She had to keep up her steely facade to make sure none of the people she dealt with would begin to second guess her abilities or her. However, deep down, she did miss them. She hadn't really ever been a social person so she didn't have many friends. That meant she spent a lot of time with her parents. That just increased even more after the fire that ruined their lives. Was she lonely?Again, she would deny that and she wouldn't even admit it to herself. She was a "loner",she would say.She didn't need anybody, she was perfectly fine by herself. That might have even become true, but she didn't even want to think about that.Emotions could get in the way of things and she didn't need any distractions. Not when she was so high up on the wanted list. However, her excitement about what was to come once she got out of the barracks might have distracted her too much.
Yes,Marley had just started to head for the door when she heard the doorknob being messed with.Dang blast it! She thought angrily as she froze, feeling her heart momentarily take a trip down to her toes and up to her head. No,no,no!This could not be happening. The room had no windows, was somewhat small, and only had that one door for an exit. There was no place for her to hide unless she could shrink herself down to paper size and hop into one of the drawers.Sadly, her life wasn't a cartoon and she was stuck with hoping she could somehow escape through the door.If whoever this was didn't have a weapon it would be a whole lot easier. She could, and did in the pass, take on a person twice her size. Now,she obviously couldn't level the person, but she could do enough to be able to get away. That seemed like the only option she could go for here.If whoever was coming in didn't have a weapon.Just stay calm and think like you always do... She told herself as she watched the door open and she felt her breathing stop.No weapon,no weapon,no weapon! She begged as the person responsible for raining on her parade came through the doorway and into her vision.Oh,look who it is...was the first thing she thought, and she thought it rather sarcastically, when she realized just who it was.Mr. Peter Decker, the guy who was the head on her case. The last person she wanted to see.Of all the people who would stumble on her,it had to be him.Even though she played a lot of tricks on his investigation to put him off of her actual trail, she was sure he was smart enough to pick up on some true details of how she acted. He would know some of her moves at least.
When he ordered her to not move, get on her knees, and blah blah blah Marley cursed mentally. He did have a gun. That made this a whole lot harder. Not to mention dangerous...more dangerous. She had to come up with something and fast since he had come a little closer to her.Maybe I can get him closer and wiggle my way out of here...let's hope I can outrun a bullet, she thought as she took in a breath and put on a smirk, hoping she wouldn't end up with a bullet somewhere in her body."Oh,Decker...there's no reason to go all...serious,is there?" She asked, her tone light in that conniving way."We've had quite some times in the past, haven't we?So why be quick to jump to that stuff?" She continued, raising an eyebrow despite her face being well-camouflaged by her hoodie and hair. What she didn't realize was that she was now death gripping the file, which was at her side,as if it would just disappear. She couldn't fail now! She'd made it this far and she wouldn't give up without trying. All she needed him to do was move out of the way of that door and she could try to run out.She was built for speed. She could make it...she just needed the chance. It seemed crazy. He could shoot to kill her if he wanted to and, quite frankly, she didn't like the idea of finding out what being shot felt like, but she had to try.She couldn't go to prison...those people...she'd be minced meat for sure. Those cells...those bars holding her in.The thought sent a shiver down her spine.
The great, notorious Marley Oaken could not be arrested! She could not be put behind bars! She had managed to get away with a rather substantial jewel collection a couple months back -and some of those jewels were still hidden, waiting to be sold...she couldn't sell them all at once for fear somebody would catch on- and the police still couldn't catch up to her! There was no way she would be arrested.Going down like this could not happen. Her parents made a stupid mistake when they were finally caught. They got too cocky and acted like they couldn't be touched, which made them less efficient. She hadn't done quite that here, but she did get a little too confident maybe...and she did not want to be apprehended do to a mistake on her part.If she was to be apprehended, let it be because they got the best of her,not because she slipped up.Please just move... She thought as she watched the barrel of the gun, hoping nothing would come out of it.
(I typed this on my phone so I can't tell how long it is.Sorry if it's short/lacking!)
Peter's surprise was obvious on his face when he first entered the files room. This was supposed to be a secured room where all the police records and files are stored. How could it be possible that someone managed to sneak their way inside? It shouldn't be possible with all entrances being watched. Yes this thief indeed chose a prefect timing to come in. Midnight where almost everyone went home. But still to be able to sneak in like this, without being sensed or seen he was sure he was dealing with a professional. He had the element of surprise by his side but surely the thief would've made plans for such a scenario. They must have a gun or some kind of trap ready. during the entire time he had been on the force only one break-in happened and it wasn't very successful, some guy tried to sneak into the station to shoot a cop that had caught and imprisoned his brother. Though he was noticed pretty quickly and was apprehended before he did anything. This thief must've came here for a file. He could've see the thief's face from under the hood but he was sure it was a woman from he body curves. Could it be a file that incriminate her? Someone paid her to steal a file for them?
Peter's shock appeared on his face for a few seconds when he got a glimpse of the woman's face. It was her, Marley Oaken. The woman that had eluded him and escaped his grasp so many times. She was a very skilled thief and from what he had seen of her work. She would even surpass her parent's skills. He had come to think of her as his arch enemy. The one that always got away. But he couldn't figure out what the hell she was doing here. It would be the most suicidal thing to do no matter how good you are. When she spoke to him a little smirk appeared on his face, his hand that held the gun relaxing a little bit but still very aimed at her chest. "Well well well... Marley Oaken. Funny running into you here of all places. If you had told me you were coming for a visit, I would've made a welcome party worthy of your great skills." Peter looked around the room in a quick glance, everything seemed to be in place and in order, she was alone. " We've had some good times indeed, though I didn't enjoy the times that came after the good times when I had to explain to the chief of the police department how you managed to escape my grasp. Though don't worry, you know by now that I'm a reasonable and charming guy." His smiles widened.
It was then that he finally noticed the file she was holding tightly in her hands. All the files in the cabinets were marked with huge numbers so even holding it like that he able to tell what the numbers were. He knows this file... he knows it very well. And he knew that there is only one man who would do anything to get his hands on it. The smile on his face was replaced with a shades of anger. "Is this what you do these days? Working for scumbags like him. I'm bit disappointed." His hand tightened on his gun again as he looked into her eyes. But something in them told him that she didn't know what he was talking about. "Ofcourse I didn't expect you to know who hired you, it doesn't matter to you after all now does it." He took a deep sigh. "Nobody knows his real name but we call him The Ghost. He's a criminal who leads a powerful crime ring, weapons dealers, human trafficking, you name it. We call him The Ghost because he truly is a ghost, for years we've had nothing on him. until last month when we raided one of his secret bases here in the city. It was the first true strike we ever managed. We found weapons and explosives in that base that probably are worth millions in the black market. This file you're holding has all the info about the operation. Where the weapons are now, who was involved. He's very good because he doesn't leave lose ends, so whatever he promised you I wouldn't be sure about getting."
A thought struck Peter's mind. If he sent her here then surely he was going to contact her again to get the file. This could be the very first real chance to have a go at him. But... would she be willing to help him in any way? He had to test her. He could probably force her to help him by making her a deal that would make her sentence a bit better. But he wanted to see if he could manage to have her willingly help him. "So here's the thing, I'll give you two choices. The first is that you surrender now. And I know that he will be contacting you at some point to see if you were able to steal the file. So if you help me then by doing what I tell you to do and help me catch something on the bastard, or maybe him himself. Then I promise you I will do my best to help you with the charges that will be given to you. And I'm sure you know that I'm the top guy here and I have some heavy leverage." Then Peter lowered the gun and put it back in it's holster. "The second choice would be to try to get past me. I'm a fair man and thus it will be a fair fight without weapons. And even with the slim chance of getting past me you'll still have to escape out again without being detected. The choice is yours."
Marley, after staring at the weapon pointed directly at her chest for a minute or two, turned her attention back to the thorn in her side.If the situation wasn't so serious and critical she probably would have chuckled at the surprise on his face. The moment his expression changed to that look of shock was the moment he realized exactly who was standing in that room with him.Maybe he was even as shocked as she had been when he,of all people, walked into her one person party. She was probably the last person he expected to see standing there in the middle of the night. He probably thought she was crazy, but then again he knew how she worked. It wasn't like her to turn down something that could make her a pretty profit just because the situation would be a little more difficult than normal. It kept her life interesting if she did something a little dangerous every now and then. However, she wasn't too happy about this little detour he was causing to her plans, that was for sure.No matter, while she waited for him to make the next move, her mind was at work calculating a way out of there. There wasn't much room to get out of the doorway, but that was her only option. That gun was a major roadblock and Peter himself was a rather major one as well.Once she got through there, she would just have to sprint away. She could lose any followers in the city. She knew every alleyway and twist and bend in that city like she knew the back of her hand. All she had to do was get out of that file room.
Despite her thoughts running rapidly to find a solution to her problem,Marley managed to smirk at what he said."Oh,darn, you know I'm not one to miss a good party," she said in mock-disappointment,"and I never get the chance to go to one due to my busy schedule." Then she listened to what he had to say next, actually chuckling genuinely to it."Oh,please tell me somebody has that on video..." She said under her breath while she was chuckling.Boy,that would definitely be amusing. She could only imagine how the chief was every single time he broke the news that she slipped away from him when it seemed like he would finally get the best of her.Yeah, like that would ever happen!Well...it probably wasn't the best idea to be thinking that right then since she still was scratching around her brain for a better idea than trying to just slip around him when the gun wasn't aimed directly at her.If he ever moved it,that is.Knowing him,he wouldn't give her a second with the gun not pointed right at her.Yet,she did notice how his grip had adjusted on the weapon when he realized who she was.Maybe he wasn't so worried that she would get away this time.Confidence was a dangerous thing to have right then,it seemed. It would make a person not take every measure possible to make sure that the situation would play out the way they wanted it to.It was like it gave the person a disadvantage because they weren't prepared entirely for a twist or turn that might come at them.Yeah, confidence within reason was okay and his probably was within reason, but that was how she seen it in this situation.
When Peter noticed the file Marley was holding, and in her opinion it took him long enough to notice it,she narrowed her eyes at him.It took two seconds for the changes in him to show. The smile he had on disappeared behind an angry expression and, after he finished talking, his grip increased on the gun.The latter set her on edge the most out of the two and her expression turned defensive, her stature tensing slightly."I don't know what you're talking about," she commented firmly, her expression changing to confusion for a moment before it returned back to the way it had been. However, she let her body loosen a bit as he explained what he was talking about. So he knew, just by looking at the file she was trying to make off with, who she had been hired by?It made her feel stupid for a minute since she didn't have a clue who had contacted her.All she knew was the sound of his voice when he called...if that was even him.Now she was questioning the entire situation. For once, she was interested in listening to what he had to say and by the time he was done, any defensive appearance she once wore was replaced by an expression of confusion. She was letting her guard down while she thought over the whole thing.Basically, she was breaking her number one rule, but right then it seemed like he wasn't trying to just get her to do such a thing so he could take advantage of the situation and disable her. However, she knew better than to assume something just by appearance or how somebody was acting. They could be perfect actors. The information he was giving her, though, seemed too good to not pay attention to and ponder on at least for a minute. It seemed to fit somebody who insisted on remaining anonymous and communicating in strange ways.Maybe she should have looked into it more rather than jump at the bait.Bait that, according to Peter, she might not even get.
"So,this alleged person who hired me has a hand in crap like that?" Marley asked as she looked down at the file in her hand. Now she wasn't death gripping it and was just holding onto it.Her focus was on the new information she was processing.Despite being a notorious thief, she wasn't necessarily a bad person.Well, some might say she is,but thinking about helping out a guy with hands in the fires of crimes like human trafficking just seemed to go against some sort of conscience she had inside and she wasn't so sure she liked it...no matter what he might be offering to her.But now she was in deep.If she was to give up on it,she would have gone through all of this for nothing...and if she didn't present the file at the rendezvous point who knows who he might send after her.She needed to get something out of this.Besides,if she was to get arrested when she wasn't going to try to get her prize out of there just seemed as crazy as supporting this mystery man.Living on the street taught her how to look out for herself and if she ended up doing something for no gain that risked her hide went against all rules of the street...the never written down, just understood, not really rules rules of the street.Another thing: if that guy wanted to move in on her turf in the black market, she didn't want to be the reason he did.She was in it now,though...she couldn't back out. What if he doesn't pay me? She thought as she continued to think on exactly how she was going to go about this now.If she went through all of this work to get nothing except stress, well, that would really stink.
However, something interesting hit Marley's ears when Peter spoke up again and she ripped herself away from her thoughts.Stay focused! She scolded herself as she surrendered her focus to the cop causing all of her problems. As he spoke those rather interesting words, she slowly brought the file up and held it with both hands, looking down at it as she thought over what he said, managing to hide her surprise at the fact that he was actually proposing such a thing. Her index finger ran over the top of the file, eyes narrowed slightly in thought.Surrender, huh? She hung on that word, that terrible, terrible, taboo word. How could she,the infamous Marley Oaken, surrender? It seemed like her heart wanted to stop just at the thought of it.Was he telling the truth?Could he honestly get her sentencing to be a little more...soft?Even though he had power, this was one of the most wanted criminals in the city he was going to try to free from a no doubt rough sentence!Maybe he was just driven past reality with the chance of getting some dirt on "The Ghost"...or maybe he really could be influential. Her gaze drifted to the gun slowly as he put it in the holster. He told her what the second option was and she raised an eyebrow, surprised that he had put his gun away. However, there was no way she could be more surprised than how she felt when he offered her option one. After watching the gun for a minute as if it being put away was just a figure of her imagination, she looked towards the door. There wasn't much room for him to get past him.She had ability, but did she have enough to get past him?I'll be done...freedom gone...but do I want to be crazy enough to risk losing that deal and a possibly easier sentence by trying to get away? And perhaps that guy could be put away because of the information I give them...and my name would stay as Queen of the Black Market despite not being involved in it due to being...behind bars...
Finally deciding on what would be best for her to do right then,Marley put her attention back on Peter."Well, aren't you being oh so generous tonight," she said somewhat sarcastically,a slight smirk decorating her lips.It was kind of crooked, though, the smirk. It had a hint of seriousness behind it."But why should I believe you?I could just agree to your first proposal and end up getting screwed because of it.Plus, you could have all of the power in the world and not be able to sway that judge who probably wants to see me before him more than you and your circus act do," she continued on,swinging the file between her fingers slightly. The smirk dropped, though,a moment later and she continued on yet again,"However,I know how to play my cards right...that's how I've survived this long.Plus,no matter how twisted you think I might be,I refuse to help out some idiot who thinks he's untouchable when he's dancing on that kind of turf...but since you're sort of making demands,I should get to,right?" She took another breath and plastered her smirk back on her lips,"If I agree to this,I am not spending one night in a jail cell until I've fulfilled my end of the bargain...and I better not be handcuffed, either." Then she sighed in a somewhat defeated way and glanced away for a minute.Am I really going to hand myself over to them? It felt like a part of herself was dying, but she knew that the odds of her getting away at that point were nighty-nine to one.She had thought about the results of each and,if she hadn't gotten away, she ran the risk of a worse sentence than she might get if she agreed to help them out."But I swear,if you don't live up to your end,I don't care if I get the chair,I will end you," she added through gritted teeth, giving him a firm look that showed she wasn't kidding.
Peter waited patiently until she had said everything she had to say, and made her decision. He was watching her very closely. Every move, every reaction and every word. He was pleasantly surprised when she seemed to be annoyed when he told her the truth about the man who hired her. She really didn't know who she was working for and he believed that. And he believed that she wouldn't deal with The Ghost's kind. Somehow he knew that in his heart. He was very glad that he decided to test her. Now that she willingly chose to help there is less chance of her tricking him, or lying to him. And he to admit that it was not easy at all to make the choice she just made and he wanted to make sure that she knows he will do his best to help her if she leads him to that bastard. Peter's mind drifted away to the woman's face for a few moments she was stunningly beautiful. Captivating eyes and great smirk. As his thoughts drifted in that direction he shook his head. Get back to reality Peter! He mostly agreed with her terms except for one of them. He couldn't risk leaving her without handcuffs. And he figured out that if they go through with this he'll be putting his neck on the line as she will be his responsibility.
"I swear by everything that I hold dear that I will help you in every way possible and I assure you that I can. Besides, if you help me with this and we actually catch The Ghost then you'll be helping yourself too. Surely the police department would be grateful for your help in catching a man they never dreamed of touching anytime soon. Besides... You're not the only one taking risks here. I still need to talk and convince the chief about this insane plan. I'm pretty sure he'll agree but he'll want my career on the line. We've been hunting you down for a long time and if you managed to escape from my grasp then I'm pretty sure everything I've achieved so far will amount to nothing. All the success I've had and all the cases I've solved will suddenly disappear. But I'm willing to take the risk and trust you to see this through with me. The Ghost is an evil man that brought harm and destroyed the lives of hundreds if not thousands of people, together maybe we can take him down. And I agree to all your terms except one. you need to be handcuffed atleast until I get the permission I need to go through with this. So if you'd be nice enough to get on your knees and stretch your hands infornt of you? I've given you every guarentee I can offer you at the moment." Peter then smiled. "Something inside me is telling me that you'd want this bastard caught as much as I do. and That I can trust you to fulfill your end, I wonder if it's the same for you."
Marley wondered how he would react to her demands. It wasn't like she was in a position to be making demands. He had the gun,not her.He had the upper hand, not her.She was a criminal and,if he wanted to,he could apprehend her right then and there, not even give her a chance to think twice about the situation.Really, she was taking a risk putting conditions on an offer that he could easily take away.If she hadn't chosen to cooperate and she did manage to get away she wouldn't have been sleeping behind barns -frankly,she probably wouldn't have been sleeping for a while, but it makes the point- like she most likely would have been if she didn't tack that little thing on.If she was going to surrender then she didn't want to create more time for her in prison.Even if cooperating meant a better sentence than what she would have gotten otherwise,it didn't seem too good in her opinion to basically stick herself in a prison cell when she could have tried to escape and get rid of all of her police-centered problems. So taking that risk seemed worth it.Besides,if she knew how Peter acted,he would at least listen to them, and if he was "a fair man" like he called himself he wouldn't take advantage of the chance to restrain her and call the deal off.At least she hoped that her assumptions were correct about him.She usually was a good judge of character...okay,so she was wrong about Anonymous,er,The Ghost, but really she had only heard his voice.Never seen him,not even in a picture. It might not have even been him,but some guy hired to do that kind of work for him. That was her excuse on that...it wasn't like she thought he was a good person, obviously, though. She hadn't expected him to want a so called "government file" for the reasons he probably did.
When Peter spoke,Marley raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms over her chest, feeling that maybe if she gave off a less...on edge appearance he would agree to what she wanted.Hopefully he wouldn't take that position the wrong way, though. He kept talking so that was a good thing."It's kind of an 'if you go down,I go down with you'' situation," she mumbled after he finished. He had partially agreed to what she wanted, but he hadn't to not handcuffing her.Which,in a way,she could understand. She could attempt to escape the moment they left that room and that situation would be costly for them.Mar was a woman of her word, though. It was something she had always been taught and held onto like a precious jewel even on the street where words could never be trusted.Unless,of course, her word was made as a trick, which in her mind wasn't her actually giving her word -her convictions were always confusing-,then she would spin somebody. This wasn't a trick on her part, though. At least she got herself out of being locked up until this whole thing was over with. How that would work, she wasn't quite sure, though. So,with a long huff, she tossed the file sideways towards the top of one of the cabinets and slowly lowered herself to her knee,a pretty disgusted expression on her face, and extended her arms out like he said."This gets mentioned to no one," she ground out firmly while staring ahead, teeth gritted as firmly as her voice.
(I wanted this to be longer, but I did it in between my paper...which I'm redoing * sigh *.Please don't think I'm just mirroring what you're giving me xD !)
Peter had a calm expression on his face as he slowly began to walk forward towards her, though he was on full alert. She could still be fooling him, it had once happened to him before back when he was a rookie. He had a drug dealer at gun point as he pretended to be surrendering so he lowered his alert level. Then as he approached him before he could realize what was happening he was on the ground and knocked out, turned out that the guy had a black belt in Taekwondo. Ever since then he never ever let his guard down. Even though for some reason he felt sure that she wouldn't try anything stupid but you know what they say. Better safe than sorry. This whole situation was unreal, he couldn't even begin to fathom how the beautiful woman who he had been hunting for a long time and failed. A woman who gave him so much hard time and made him look like a fool on more than one occasion is now kneeling in front of him with her hands stretched to be handcuffed, Without even doing anything. And not only that, she might be the key to catching another big fish. And all he had to do was go and attempt to put a case file in the right place which he was sure he was going to have a hard time doing. This day has been getting better and better.
As he reached her he took out his handcuffs and gently cuffed her hands with a small smile on his face. "I'm sure you wouldn't mind if I enjoy and relish this moment. I've imagined it so many times and it's finally a reality." He said mockingly. He made sure that he put thee handcuffs in the most comfortable position so she's wouldn't have any much of a hard time. "I'm sorry that was mean from me, I can't even imagine how this feels. Being if cuffs which is I imagine the fate you hate and fear the most. Imagining what fate awaits you now. But look at the bright side. You have the chance to do some good for a change. To experience what it feels like to help saving people's lives, I know that this feeling most likely doesn't interest you at all but trust me feeling it is always worth it, even if for once." He remembered the first time he felt it. He had only been on the force for one week and was patrolling alone when a distress call came in. He was the closest cop to the location so he hurried there. There was a lot of shouting and screaming inside the house. His instinct let him to break the door and hurry inside even though it was against his police protocol. he rushed in searching the house, letting the shouts of the woman who was screaming guide him. When he got there, there was a man who appeared drunk and angry holding a knife. He was charging at her and as soon as he saw that scene he charged in the man's direction and was able to knock him down only a few steps from her. He punched him in the face twice knocking him out and handcuffed him. The woman whispered her thanks through a waterfall of tears. Then three young kids, two girls and a boy came in rushing and hugged the woman. If he didn't make it in time they would've lost their mother, and maybe their own life too. It was the best feeling he had ever experienced. The smiles of the children and the gratefulness of the mother. He wanted Marley to experience that feeling, even if for one time.
"Here is what I'm thinking. I'm gonna call the chief of police and set up a meeting with him in a place we both know, away from the station. And there I will explain everything to him. the chief will see reason and will agree to what we are doing. But first I need you to tell me how everything happened. How did the bastard find you and contacted you. Did you meet him in person? did you meet somebody he sent? was it all done through the phone? And what was the plan after you acquired the file? What were you going to get in exchange? How was he going to contact you? I know these are a lot of questions but I really do need to hear their answers. I need to have the full picture when I explain things to the chief of police. And I need to know that this is solid." Peter made the mistake of looking into her eyes, it only took a glace for them to captivate him and hold him prisoner. They were the most beautiful eyes in the world. He wanted her to know that she could trust him. Peter sighed. "And if you have anything you want to say before we do this, now would be the time."
Marley sighed quietly as he started over to her, probably taking every precaution he could to make sure that she didn't go back on her word and try something.Honestly, she felt very tempted to do so.There was no guarantee any of this would work out to any kind of advantage for her.The chief could not agree to it and Peter might not even be able to help her out in the end. Then she would have gone through all of this for nothing.Yet,if she had ran off and handed over that file to The Ghost she knew she wouldn't have been able to live with herself. As silly as it sounded, she would have felt like she was being selfish.Handing over that file could cause a lot more lives to be wrecked and no matter what she got out of it,bringing harm to people was not worth it.Even spending who knows how long in prison would feel better than knowing that families were broken apart or lives were lost because she helped that guy. However, watching him handcuff her,no matter how gentle he did it,was one of the most painful things she ever had to do.That click of them locking in place condemned her to whatever the law had in store for her and that was terrifying. For a few seconds, that feeling of terror flashed in her eyes, but the moment Peter spoke she lost it to a look of annoyance and a little hatred.
Marley gave him a hard glare before rolling her eyes.Yeah,he really wasn't helping the situation even when he tried to correct it.She was well aware of everything he was saying and the good points just didn't seem to cool her down from the first thing he said."Yeah, just get it in that thick head of yours that it technically wasn't your skill that brought me to this point, because honestly anybody could have stepped in that doorway and pointed a gun at me,making getting out of here too difficult and risky.I willingly surrendered because apparently I don't have a lenient conscience. It was not your skill and I will never admit that I was apprehended by the police since that was not how it happened anyways," she said firmly, her voice not faltering once. After that, she huffed and let all of her steam out with that puff of air."Just remember your side of the deal..." She added quietly. It was probably pretty stupid to trust just his word, but he would be stupid to not live up to his side of the bargain. She would never forget it and she would make sure she made him pay for it.Like she told him before, she wouldn't care if she got the chair.
When the questions started coming and kept coming,Marley felt like her head was momentarily spinning as she tried to gather all of the information and figure out the safest way for her to give it to him.Any slight mistake could land her in more trouble of land somebody else in trouble."He or somebody working for him contacted me by phone about a week ago,I'm not sure who it was...told me he wanted the file and knew I was the most qualified to get it," she began to explain, choosing her words carefully, but trying to not make it obvious. She paused for a moment, hesitating at telling him what she was offered in exchange for the file. However, she continued on,"I was offered a way out of the country and enough money to change everything about me...enough for me to start over..." The last part was quiet and her gaze traveled to the ground in front of her during it as well. She came so close to being able to hit the restart button! But,no,she had to do the right thing...imagine that. After a moment, she cleared her throat and kept on explaining what happened,"He said I had a week to think about it and to contact the number he gave me to leave him know my decision. When I called the number back,it was the same voice.I told him I would do it and that I planned to do it tonight. We set up a rendezvous point for tonight where I would hand over the file and he'd give me the money and tell me where to go to get on out of here...oh,and he told me I'd better be there by sunrise or the deal was off..."
Finally finished,Marley thought about the situation for a minute. If she did not get there with the file by morning, she wasn't sure what would happen. In all honesty, she wasn't sure how he even found out how to contact her.So would be send somebody to...deal with her if she didn't live up to her end?If this guy had his hands in all of the crap Peter said he did,she was pretty certain he wouldn't mess around. That was pretty frightening to think about...but maybe she wouldn't have to worry and they would come up with something."The person didn't say if they were going to meet me or somebody else.He just said to be there with the file," she added, sounding like she was picking apart the situation, which she was. This whole thing sounded so much more complicated now even though the details of the events did not change.
((I pressed enter and it posted it instead of taking a new line >.> give me a few min to edit and finish it xD ))
As he was done handcuffing her he listened to every word she said. She did make a good point, it wasn't his skill that caught her but he also gave her a very fair chance to escape all she had to do was get past him while he's without a weapon. He wondered if it really was her 'lenient conscience' that made her pick that choice or the face that if she failed to escape she'll face the full term of her charges. He really wanted to believe that she wouldn't work with a man like The Ghost. He never really understood why he really wanted to believe that there is a good person buried there somewhere. The fact is Peter doesn't blame her for what she is, being a criminal and a thief. She was raised by thieves and her whole childhood was probably her parents forcing their lifestyle on her and teaching her to become like them. It's only a matter of what kind of family you were born in, if he was born into her family instead of her, he most likely would be a master thief himself. It's all about the seeds that the parents plant in their children, it's what most likely will shape their future. His parents were good people. Taught him to seek justice and help those in need. And it was what he ended up wanting to do.
"Yes it wasn't my skills that caught you but I did gave you a somewhat fair chance of escape, my 'lenient conscience' is clear. And it doesn't really matter if you 'admit' that you were caught by the police because no one will care about that. All that matters is that you are. And I gave you my word that I will do my part of the deal, and I will." He backed away from her and took a small notebook and a pen. He started writing down the information that she was giving him. It was all pretty interesting. The Ghost is a sneaky bastard, he promised her to give her exactly what she needed the most to force her into accepting the job without being cautious and thinking it through. Then at the delivery point would most likely take the file and kill her. He assumed that most likely the man that contacted her wasn't The Ghost, there was no need for him to contact her personally. So it most likely was one of his lackeys. Then after finishing the job she would deliver it to an appointed place. It all seemed pretty straight forward, too simple. Which was worrying. "Alright give me a second, I need to call the chief of police and set up a meeting with him."
Keeping an eye on her Peter put down the notebook and pen and took out his phone. He dialed his boss's number and waited for him to answer. It took a few moments for the chief to answer. "Hello chief, sorry for waking you up but something very important came up and I was wondering if we can meet at the usual place right now? No sir... I'm afraid it really can't wait. No I would really rather not get into the details on the phone but I guess all I need to do is mention that it's about Marley Oaken and The Ghost. No I'm heading there right now, we are short of time. Yes sir I'll see you there." He finished the call and placed the phone in his pocket. "Ok it's time for us to get going. Follow me and don't try anything." He said as he headed for the door he opened it slowly and he saw that the way to the back door was clear except for Riley, a senior police officer who stood near it. He held the door closed and called out. "Riley can you please go to the third floor to get me a gun licence that I've asked for? I really gotta finish my case file and you seem bored. Peter gave him a small smile. The other man nodded and started moving. He hated doing this to the man and lying to him but it had to be done. He was short on time. With that he opened the door and signaled her to follow him slowly as they headed to the back door. They managed to get out from it and reached his detective car.
(Haha,it thought you were finished xD .And sorry I didn't reply sooner,I went to Tractor Supply for something lol.)
Marley didn't really want to hear his opinion on what she had said before she started to explain everything.Nothing would sway her thinking because if she allowed it to be swayed this whole situation would sting a heck of a lot more.Yeah,he did give her the chance to get away, but it was a very slim one and was it really worth it?She was skilled, but the area was confined and her only exit was nearly completely blocked. She had to admit it,she wasn't so sure she could get past him in that case.If she did try and managed to get away, then she would still be free,no bars holding her in and no handcuffs restraining her. However,if she couldn't manage to get away then she would be stuck with the full charges against her.In the situation she was in,the best option seemed to be taking him up on his offer and hoping for the best when sentencing time came.Plus,if she did get away, she would have no choice but to take the file to whoever was going to meet her and who knew how many lives she would harm by handing that file over. She didn't know very much about The Ghost, but from what Peter told her,and she was confident that he had told her the truth just by how he acted when he told her about him,she didn't want to help him no matter what she landed herself in because of it.Even if she was a thief, she didn't want to support any kind of crime like he was doing. In reality, she only stole to keep herself going, not because she enjoyed it or wanted to do it.Her parents had set her up to fail. When the fire wrecked their lives, they entered into the world of thievery and drug her with them. When they were captured, she was wanted, too. She couldn't just go to some business and say,"Hey,can I have a job?" She had no choice but to continue in the criminal life.
Marley watched as wrote down what she was telling him.Having spoken about the entire plan made her realize how fragile it had been. The Ghost had the upper hand and he could do whatever he wanted to her, really. She would be going there alone without knowing who was going to meet her.She would have no protection except for the combat skills she possessed, and she knew very well that that would mean nothing in a situation where anything could happen. They could have people waiting to jump her,the person meeting her could have a weapon on him. There were many things that could happen to her...and in a way,she would still have to face that. She found it almost unbelievable that they wouldn't send her to the meeting place to see what would unfold and if they weren't fast enough, she could very well be harmed or worse. When he told her to wait a second, she gave him a simple nod,the sound of the chief making a shiver go through her spine. He probably hated her guts the most out of all of the police,or at least most.It seemed that Peter would most likely be the one to hate her the most just because of everything she put him through.Oh,she would miss toying around with him.Back to the chief, though, she knew he held this entire situation. If he didn't agree to it,then everything was off...including Peter working on softening up her sentence. Then she would have surrendered for nothing...well,she still would have gotten out of helping The Ghost...but it would sting too much to remember that. She still had to look out for herself, after all.
As Peter spoke,Marley looked towards the ground a bit.Her attention was on the conversation going on between Peter and the chief. The thought of making the man get out of bed made her smirk slightly. At least she could still be a pain for them, even if she wasn't trying right then.At the thought of waiting and not getting to the rendezvous point in time, the smirk went away and she looked towards Peter. She couldn't risk waiting.Even in police custody,The Ghost could still do something to make her pay for not keeping their agreement.Whoever spoke to her about being there by sunrise sounded a little too grim, which caused her to definitely not want to be late even before she entered into this whole debacle.Apparently, the chief agreed to meet them wherever Peter had in mind and she felt relief, but she was put a bit on edge when she realized she didn't know where they were going. However, she just gave another nod to him and, while he spoke to somebody outside, she worked on getting on her feet.It took a moment and a step back, but she managed to stand up and hang on to her balance. Then, when he signaled for her to follow, she headed out of the room, momentarily gritting her teeth at the thought that she was walking out of here in handcuffs rather than running out of there with success accompanying her.Once they were outside, she looked over at him and finally asked,"Where exactly are we going?" She raised an eyebrow as she waited for his answer, hoping it would be someplace that she would feel alright with...it wasn't like she had a choice, though.
Peter stood beside the car silently, lost in thought. The truth was that he was tired, it had been a very long day and an hour ago he was looking forward to just going home and get some sleep. But right now that seemed like a far off dream, this night will be a very long one. What occupied his mind the most was how will the police chief react to what he was about to suggest. No matter how good he is he could never predict this man's reactions. The police chief always managed to surprised him. And he knew that there was a very big chance that he won't even listen to him and even scold him or suspend him until he's interrogated with for even thinking of offering Marley a deal on his own like that. And he would have every right. But no, he had to see things Peter's way, The Ghost is very dangerous and this was a great lead on him. He was sure that any compromise the chief was going to do was going to be worth it. But still he really wanted to consider the worst case scenarios. He could be suspended, his badge taken, his career over and even imprisoned. Or the chief simply tell him to leave The Ghost for now as they already have caught a big fish, Marley. What was he going to do then? what risks was he prepared to take? how far was he willing to go to catch that bastard? Her voice brought him out of his endless thought loop and back into really and he was very grateful for it. Even though he couldn't stop thinking about the possibilities he knew that what he had to do is act and hope for the best.
"We're going to a local diner that me and the chief like to eat at. It has some pretty good meals and drinks. And hope that the chief doesn't decide to shoot up both before even hearing what we have to say and get a medal for it. I just can never predict how he is going to react so all I can do is go through with this and hope. And to be honest I also could use a meal and a drink. It had been a long day already and thing were about to get crazy. How about you? Hungry?" Would she even tell him even if she was? She clearly hated his guts for what he was doing to her and there is always the chance that she will go back on her word and just escape in the first chance she could get. After a few moments he went to her side and opened the door to the front seat beside him for her. It wasn't a wise move to let her sit in the front seat beside him but if she was going to try to betray him, he'd rather it was now before he said anything to the chief and having her sit next to him would create good chances for her to try something. "time to go for a fun ride." He said with a sad smile as he waited for her to get in. He just couldn't resist to pass on any chance that he could get to annoy her. He could never figure out why but that was the sad truth. Sometimes he found it very hard to understand his own self. Whatever happens next, tonight she was going to be is partner. He smiled at the thought, he really missed having a partner. Someone to talk to while on the job instead of talking to himself the whole time like a crazy maniac.
(The last sentence of your reply cracked me up xD .)
Marley felt her entire body tense up when she came to stand by Peter's car.The day just kept getting better. It seemed like everything that she was afraid of happening was happening. She was basically arrested, was handcuffed, and now was going to have to ride in a police car.Oh,and she still had her sentence to worry about. The evening was turning out to be just wonderful. To try and keep her mind off of everything happening to her,she tried to predict what Peter would say. They couldn't be going to a very public place.Even though it was midnight, people would still be around and somebody was bound to recognize her and at least wonder what was going on.It wasn't like her face wasn't an unknown one.Everybody had to know what she looked like.If somebody was able to recognize her, they could tell the police and by that time she was sure they were desperate enough to rely on anything that could lead them to her. Then again,it probably wouldn't be someplace secluded, either. They wouldn't be stupid enough to trust her in a place where their eyes were the only ones on her.No specific place came to her mind, though,so she gave up and paid attention to him as he began to tell her.A diner, huh? That wouldn't have come to her mind as a place to take one of the most wanted criminals in the city. However,it seemed like an even sort of playing ground. When he asked if she was hungry, she shrugged, but it was as if her stomach had received the cue because it growled quietly."Yeah,if I could trust you two to not slip poison into anything that would come near my mouth," she grumbled, rolling her eyes as she went over to the car door he had opened for her.
At his comment,Marley rolled her eyes again before shooting him a quick, sharp glare."My hands might be restrained, but I could still kick you.Hard." she told him firmly, not enjoying his comments at all.Once she had sat herself inside of the car,she sighed and shut her eyes for a moment, resting her head back against the seat.Boy,had this backfired.I could jump out of this, she thought as she glanced towards the door, but then she shook her head slightly. No,potential suicide was not in her plans no matter what. However, she might end up wishing she had acted on that thought, though, because who knew what the chief would say.She figured that he wouldn't be too happy when he seen her,to say the least. She could even see him literally falling over when he laid eyes on her. This would not be a fun experience...but maybe she could make it fun. While she knew she wouldn't try anything, but she sure as heck could use her sharp tongue to her benefit.
(I whipped this up really quick because I have to get ready for drum,so sorry if it's lousy!)
Peter started the car ready to take off and head to their destination. It was his precious Chevrolet Camaro that he spent an entire year saving up to get. The dark-blue colored car was his dream car and he was the happiest man on earth as he was given the keys for it. The very first day he drove around in it for twelve hours straight. He considered buying it a huge milestone in his stupid life. He didn't really have close friends. a girlfriend or family so his Camaro became all that to him. Which may justify the state of rage he went into when a young woman driving a Kia hit the side of his car scratching it as she was speeding a few days ago. All he could think about is the woman getting the electric chair for what she had done to his baby as she stood there apologizing to him. But in the end he let her go with a forced smile.
Even though Peter's eyes were on the road. His mind was focused on trying to comprehend what was going on. He still couldn't believe the events of this night were real. He glanced at the woman sitting beside him. Her mind must also be racing with worry and considering all the possibilities. He would've liked it if he had the ability to read minds. What was she thinking? was she going to make her move and attempt to escape? Did she tell him the truth about her agreement with who ever that man was? and he did notice that until now she never mentioned where she was supposed to deliver the file. It had to be a close enough place as the deadline is at dawn. And ofcourse there was the problem of his boss. Even though he had every reason to convince the police chief that what he was doing was right there was a good chance that he will just tell him to take her to jail. What then... what will he do... They reached the diner pretty quickly, it was only a few minutes drive from the police station. "We're here." he said as he pointed at the simple yet eye catching building. It had some nice curves that made it look unique. From where they stood the diner appeared to be empty except for some waiters and three occupied tables. One of them had an old yet tough looking man sitting in it. Peter took a deep breath before he started speaking. "Would you like to go inside with me? You could stay here as I go have a talk with papa smurf but I'm gonna have to also handcuff you to the seat." A small smile hit his lips as he called his boss papa smurf, in his mind that was the nickname he gave to him. He couldn't believe that despite everything going on he was in a mood for jokes. "Though in there I'll order us something to eat and drink as we talk. If you stay here you'll have to wait until I'm done talking to him, it's your choice." Then Peter looked away from her face as he murmured. "Well... I'd appreciate it if you didn't let me face the dinosaur on my own."
((Wrote this from my mobile so no real idea how long it will be X_X ))
Marley sighed quietly as she watched the lines on the road zip by,each inch the car traveled bringing them closer to the moment that held the entire future of the deal. All she could do was hope that the chief would agree or everything was out the window and she would be behind bars before she could think twice about it.That couldn't happen,it just couldn't.This was a risk for her just like it was a risk for Peter. If this didn't end up going her way then she would have been just as fine if she had tried to escape back in the file room.Yeah, she'd still have to come up with a way to keep The Ghost's wrath off of her since she wouldn't have taken that file to him,but she would have escaped jail.Granted, with the deal she still didn't get away from being locked up,but it could be for a lot less time than what she would have been if she had failed to get away. Her fate was in the answer the chief would give...and if they would even make it that far.Who knew how the man was going to react. He might take one look at her and take justice into his own hands. The police department took hits every time she got away from them. The public and the news poked fun at them for it,she had read a newspaper cover with a rather clever right up the one time.It kept her laughing for a week.So hard feelings definitely existed, she just hoped that they weren't hard enough to where he couldn't see reason. She could be the key to catching another high profile figure so he would be losing something if he wouldn't agree or even hear them out.Knowing the luck she was having that night he wouldn't even let them open their mouths. She wanted it to just happen already, but when the diner came into view she suddenly wished that the drive had been much longer.
When they were close enough,Marley took in the people inside. It couldn't be deserted except for the chief and the waiters, right? No,there had to be some other people there...people who would stare at her in the handcuffs and not look away. She felt embarrassment creep up right then, but she forced it away when Peter started talking.Giving him her attention, she thought about what he was saying and even managed a chuckle at the papa smurf comment. The fact that there were other people in there tried to keep her sitting in that car while Peter dealt with the old man in there. However, she felt like she had to be in there, too, for some reason. Not that she felt like she could do anything to convince him since her actions probably spoke loud enough for him to drown out anything her voice might say,but maybe she might be able to pull him one way...hopefully the right when. When Peter looked away and mumbled what he did,she raised an eyebrow in slight surprise, not expecting him to say that.Oh,she could have had some fun with him there, but as she took a look at the chief, she understood him completely. However, she wasn't too thrilled about being handcuffed to the seat.At all."I'll go in...but do you have to handcuff me?I...I don't want people seeing in..." It was her turn to mumble and she got hers in in the final sentence, not wanting him to see that she was embarrassed by that. After that, she looked out of the passenger's window, chewing on the skin on the inside of her mouth as she tried to just get her nerves to calm down so she could ignore her feelings.
He gave her request some thought. She did have a good point, the handcuffs aren't very pleasant to appear in public while wearing. But what would his chief think if he appeared in front of them with her free and without any restrain? It would appear like he's coming in with his best friend or girlfriend. he couldn't imagine what it would seem like to the chief. He didn't know what do... What was wrong with him? She's a criminal! why was he caring so much about how she's feeling and what she's going through. He was supposed to hate her, she made him go through hell so many times. He'd solve case after case after case then try to catch her and fail. And all the cases he had solved would disappear. In his line of work, all it took is one screw up to make everything you've achieved before it non-existent. With a sigh he said. "Will you promise me not to make any stupid moves and make me look bad in front of my boss? Don't let his old age fool you he can literally kick my butt." Bad memories came to his mind. He shook his head with a small smile. "I'm already neck deep in trouble, what's more suicidal move right? Here give me your hands." As she stretched her hands he reached for his keys and unlocked the handcuffs. hanging them to his belt he said. "I want to make one thing very clear, I will not hesitate, not for one second to shoot you if you make any wrong move." He wasn't too sure about what he was saying but he knew he sounded serious enough.
He stepped out of the car and waited patiently until she came and stood beside him. "In there you should let me do that talking. Don't say a damn word unless he asks you something directly. I'll let you order whatever food and drink you want and you'll sit there eating and drinking, nothing more." Mentioning food reminded him of his own hunger, he was finally going to grab a bite to eat. He started running through the menu of the diner as he stood there. Burgers, hot dogs, chicken, salads... no not salads. Salads never made his hunger go away. Salads seemed to be up in Marley's ally. She has a very beautiful and amazingly fit body, he wouldn't be surprised if all she ever ate are salads. But not him, not today. Today he'll be eating some mean burgers. And maybe some hot dogs too. Unless papa smurf gets angry then he won't have any time to do anything. He looked at her again. "Tell me Marley, why are criminals so rude these days? You didn't even tell me that I have a nice car." He said as he began slowly heading towards the diner.
For a quick moment,Marley raised an eyebrow in surprise towards him actually considering not making her wear the handcuffs.Apparently, the surprises, both good and bad, were going to just keep popping up.That was either a good thing or a bad thing, but she decided to just focus on this certain surprise rather than turn herself into a puddle of worry about what was going to happen as the late night progressed. She already had a bit of a twisting stomach due to the fact that they were so close to an answer.I wonder how chiefy there will take it if I come waltzing in there without handcuffs on...I think I can hear him now... She grimaced slightly, but by then Peter was saying something.Taking a glance towards the cuffs restraining her wrists, she took in what he said, smirking slightly despite herself."Oh,that would be a good show..." She snickered as she looked back over at him,but then she felt like she might be pushing it so she gave him a nod and said cleverly,"If I tried something, you'd lose your job and what's a criminal without her goody two-shoes arch nemesis?" Yep.She had to have some fun by digging at him, even if it was a rather weak dig...it was getting late,so she deserved a little slack to be cut for her!A wave of relief washed over her as she reached her hands over for him to unlock the handcuffs and it flowed through her once again while she watched him actually take them off.She let out a quiet sigh and brought her hands back, smiling a little at the ability she had been given back to move them around. Then Peter gave her a warning and she looked over at him, trying to figure out if he was serious. The way he was going, she wondered if he would pull the trigger when the gun was pointed at her. However,it wasn't like she needed to worry about that since she wasn't planning on trying anything, but it would be nice to know that the threat really wasn't there."Looking at the chief there...your gun wouldn't be the biggest problem I'd have," she commented as she got out of the vehicle, noting a scratch on the side of it.
As she headed over to Peter on the other side of the car,Marley pulled her hood down and pulled her long black hair forward, letting it frame her face, but not hide it.At the instructions he gave her,she nodded again."I'm not exactly eager to listen to the conversation let alone talk to him myself..." She mumbled and she put her hands in her pockets, thinking about the situation that was just a few minutes away if that. She figured they'd be grilled no matter what, but how bad was the question. She figured third degree would be getting out ahead..."And,judging by my growling stomach,my mouth won't be free for long enough to utter a word..." She added as she thought about food.Yeah, she was definitely hungry, her adrenaline had just blocked it before.Did she want to go for what she normally ate or did she want to sink her teeth into a good, meaty sandwich?Hopefully her head wouldn't be spinning to where she couldn't think about that. Then,at his next comment, she, for some reason, laughed. How she did,she didn't know, because she was getting pretty nervous. She was willingly leaving herself prone to these people at the chief's will and the verdict would come soon. What a night...so for her to laugh at something that probably wasn't meant to be funny,well...maybe her nerves were really screwing her up."I think my mind was on the fact that I was in an officer's car. But,yes,it's a nice car...aside from that scratch," she commented, giving him a sly smirk as she looked over at him,a playful glint in her hazel eye.
(Sorry if it's crappy...they had to put a long time lesson horse down at my barn today so I'm not exactly feeling so good... :/ )
When she commented about the scratch Peter gave her an angry glance as he was heading to the diner. "Ofcourse you noticed the god damn scratch." He swore to himself to go fix the scratch first thing tomorrow. Tomorrow... he had no idea if he'll be able to fix anything. He had no idea what was going to happen this night. With every step he approached the diner, he kept his eye on the Chief. He didn't notice them yet which is a good thing. He seemed to be sipping from a coffee cup. as he reached the door he let Marley enter before him, he took a deep breath then entered after her. He grabbed her elbow and approached the owner of the diner. He grabbed the menu and started skimming through it. It was a big menu and had some pretty tasty looking dishes. His eyes landed on the burgers... yes burgers always hit the spot. He ordered two cheese burgers with a Dr.Pepper and fries. He whispered in Marley's ear. "You order whatever you want and come sit next to me. God help us both." He then started heading for his chief's table. The chief had noticed Marley and had a furious and confused look on his face, but he forced himself to be calm as he realized Peter was coming to explain. As soon as Peter sat down the chief said. "Wanna tell me what the hell is going on? Why is she here? and why isn't she handcuffed and in prison!? have you lost your mind." Peter was trying to keep a straight face as he was hit with the expected barrage of questions. "Allow me to explain what's going on." And he started telling the story of how he found her in the files room and what file she was seeking. "You see chief, she was hired by The Ghost. She ofcourse didn't know who he was and what he does, we both know very well how careful he is. I was about to capture her and put her in jail but then it hit me. This may be the first real lead to the Ghost in months. He wants the file that has the information about the raid we did on his base a few months back. So I decided to make her a deal. She will help us by going through with her agreement with The Ghost in exchange for a lessened jail time." The chief's face still had the anger in it. "Are you insane Peter! since when do we ever make deal with criminals! you can very well lose you badge for this! and why isn't she running away if she's not even handcuffed."
Peter looked into the chief's eyes, his fears may be about to become reality. "I know, but if she leads us to The Ghost then it would've all been worth it. And she's not running away because she wants to take this man down, after what I told her about what he has done. Sir I know that this is a huge thing I'm asking from you, but I do trust that she is telling the truth and is willing to help us. So please just consider it." Peter then sat silently as he awaited Marley to join them.
Marley snickered at what he said, the glare only increasing her enjoyment of the situation.Yep,she knew that one would strike a sore spot. The smirk that decorated her face eventually faded to a neutral line as they came closer and closer to the diner. With each step, she just kept thinking about how much closer to the chief and his opinion they were getting and she felt tense for a moment when Peter opened the door to the diner. Her footsteps didn't falter, though, and she went in,setting her jaw to try and not appear nervous. She had to keep that tough facade up.It was what the chief would be expecting and, while she didn't want everything of what he was expecting to happen or show up,she didn't want him to think that whatever happened earlier changed her.At least not her personality.Yeah,it did change her in a way, because if that hadn't happened the moment she seen him she would have been flying out of the door.Same with Peter.Well...she might've had a little fun with Peter since that always went so swimmingly. With the chief,no.She wouldn't trust her abilities enough to toy around with him in such a close range. However,it was fun making every single officer look like a fool...on her own terms in her own territory, though. When he grabbed her elbow, she raised an eyebrow in surprise at the sudden action.Practically a second later, she gave him a confused look, but figured that he didn't want to trust her to not turn on her heels and run like her butt was on fire.At the beautiful sight that was the menu, she sighed quietly, never having felt so relieved to see food options laid out before her.Okay, maybe after her family's crimes started to pay off and they could actually give her options was a little more relieving than that, but it was pretty close.Food always helped after a stressful day.It took her longer to decide on what she wanted and she ended up going for broke and ordering a delicious sounding philly cheese stake.Grease would never be so welcomed in her mouth.Normally she aimed for more healthy stuff, but after that night...what the heck.Might as well. The waiter had given her a look, which she returned with a glare and a firm drink order,"Sprite."
The entire time she was working on her order,Marley was tuned into the conversation between the two fuzzballs.Heh,I'm full of surprises, aren't I,chief? She thought when she heard him question about why she wasn't running due to her not being cuffed.I wonder if you'll pass out when I walk over and sit down next to Peter? She continued as a smirk came onto her lips.It would definitely be interesting even if she wasn't planning on saying anything until he wanted something out of her mouth.Guess it's time to find out, she sighed, the smirk disappearing,as she went over to the booth and slipped in.Her gaze was not on either of the men, rather it was on the table's smooth surface. She folded her hands together and brought them up so that her chin could rest on them. Then she finally looked toward the chief, her eyes emotionless despite all of the thoughts of daring him to say or do something towards her, thoughts of sarcasm, and thoughts of how she'd love to push him off of a bridge.Oh,and a question that she would love to ask him: Surprised I didn't get the heck out of here, huh?
The chief's face became a rainbow of raging colors as Marley came and sat beside Peter. "You have the gull to come and sit just like that! After all you have done! I'm gonna..." Peter quickly stopped the chief's rage by reminding him. "Sir you agreed to discuss this. We have her sir and she is not going anywhere. She is not a problem but a key to catching an untraceable man." The chief turned his attention to Peter with a curious look. " Why are you so sure she won't get away? she is not handcuffed and not restricted in any way, and you aren't even keeping a god damn eye on her. You want to know how things seem to me detective? It seems to me that she is playing you and have you wrapped like a ring around her damn fingers. That's how things seem from my seat." Peter's face turned red, it was a mixture of embarrassment and anger. But as he thought about it, to anyone other than him and Marley. it really did seem like that. "Sir she is not running away because she knows that she has no hope of escape and she will help because she want to lessen her jail time as per the deal." The chief looked at him with a bit of disappointment. "And since when did you become authorized to make deals with criminals? You're a damn detective Peter and if you were doing your job she would be in jail by now. Instead you are making her a promise you cannot keep and a lead for me that you cannot guarantee!" "you are right sir, I cannot make any deals, but you can. And sir I have seen with my own eyes the crimes of The Ghost. And I cannot sleep or even rest for one second if I know I had a lead to catch the bastard and didn't chase it no matter what the circumstances are."
Peter kept his face straight but he was relived inside as he saw the chief thinking the situation over. It was always a good sign, he might end up pulling this off in the end. Though there was one concern on his mind, Marley. He was sure the chief was about to ask her some questions and he was afraid of her answers, very afraid. He knew her character and knew that she would love nothing more than to irritate and make fun of the chief though in this situation that would be foolish. If the chief agreed to do this he would be breaking a law or two. Allowing a criminal to help with any police matter was unpresedented. But if she annoys him even a little he might call this whole thing off. As he was thinking about this their food arrived. He was surprised by Marley's order. It wasn't the healthiest thing in the world, but she probably said. "What the hell." and went for it. He dug straight into the food, not even attempting to show any eating manners. The chief suddenly turned his attention to Marley. "Where did you agree to meet? what is the meeting point? and what instructions were you given when you reach there?"
Marley watched the chief's face contort into a world of anger and she wasn't sure if she wanted to smirk or put on a look of anger of her own. However, she kept that neutral look on her face. She did adjust her position, though, from that leaning against the table one to leaning back with her arms crossed over her chest. As his rage turned into words, she felt a feeling of desire to just lean forward and punch him square in the face,as hard as she could.Which, don't write her off just by her looks, she can definitely pack a punch. The street fighting tactics people that she bumped into during her...work taught her really came in handy and she worked hard to master them for cases where she would need a little brawn rather than just brains, speed, and agility.Basically, she wanted to be the "total package".If she didn't want to prove herself, she would have had her go at him no matter what would happen. Her grudges often brought on her rather uncontrollable temper and she was more than surprised that she was able to keep control of herself. However, she was pretty sure that by the time he finished grilling them that she was either shooting steam out of her ears or looking like she was about to.The food arriving gave her something else to focus on and she quickly fixed the top bun, since it was falling off from all of the toppings, before sinking her teeth in the delectable burger. That shut her up for a little bit at least. The juicy flavor mixed with the toppings, such as onions and tomatoes and even mushrooms, exploded over her tongue and if she didn't have such a strong hold on herself she might've actually hummed in delight.Apparently she didn't have to worry about keeping some composure because Peter definitely didn't.It made her smirk between a bite.
When the chief moved on from his reign of terror and actually asked her some questions,Marley was in the middle of a nice sip of the cold, bubbly soda. She raised an eyebrow and finished her gulp before she set the glass down and took a breath."Let me just say something first..." She started in a low tone, happy with herself that she was able to come up with what seemed like a safe way to get a dig at him,"By now you know I like to prove you wrong...make you look bad,you could say.Since you're assuming that I'm going to turn on you like I'm some sort of backstabber, don't you think that, based on past experiences where I've worked so hard to make the exact opposite of what you're expecting happen,I'm going to try my hardest to go along with this to prove you wrong once again?" For a quick moment, she chuckled and smirked. However, she got a grip on herself before she lost it and kept on going from the feeling of enjoyment she got from just that one thing, and she sighed, running a hand through her bangs."You know the highway that runs into the south end of the city?About a mile out from where it enters the city,I have to go into the woods off to the left...go for about a half mile and there's a tiny clearing with a boulder in it.That's where we're supposed to meet. The only instructions I was given was to get the file,go there, and hand it over." she answered, raising an eyebrow when she was done. She had so cleverly left out the fact that that was the location she did all of her trades at...that was her secret and would hopefully stay that way. After a minute she leaned forward and rested her elbows on the table, rubbing her forehead while she mumbled,"Even I'll admit that sounds too easy to not be suspicious..."
Peter dug into the food like he hadn't eaten for years. Those cheese burgers were amazing and he pretty much lost himself in the taste. He realized that he hadn't had anything to eat since the morning. He forgot pretty much everything as he spent his day searching for the missing child. Take a sip from the heavenly Dr.Pepper he spared a glance at both Marley and the Chief. They both seemed about to burst. When he asked her the question and she began to answer Peter stopped eating and listened... And he wished he stopped existing as she so boldly told the chief how she felt. She talked so openly without care like she was scolding her best friend. Peter's face expressed the feelings of anger he was feeling. She might as well have blown up their chance. But what really surprised him is the chief's reaction. He listened calmly then when she finished he asked. "Are you done? Good. We'll just have to wait and see about that. And at least this time, I do hope you prove me wrong. You should know that speaking to the chief of police in his face like that isn't a very wise move." Then they both listened as she told them about the meeting point. It was an interesting spot to meet, Can be easily guarded. "Man that area won't be easy to monitor." The chief agreed with a nod. They sat silently for a while, Peter was thinking about all the possible senarios. The chief finally broke the silence. "So... What do you need from me? provided I agree to this insanity you are about to do. Even though my advice would be to stay away from this crazy attempt. It's way too risky."
Peter looked into Marley's eyes for a little while. Then taking a deep breath he turned his attention to the chief. "We are ready and willing to go through with this. But we can't do it on our own, we're gonna need the police's support. Maybe a team to cover our backs. We both know that the meeting place will most likely be well guarded. And... I want your word that Marley will get her end of the deal. Have her jail time reduced as much as possible. She didn't have to agree to any of this but I truly believe she is doing it for the right reasons." The chief was silent for a while, deep in thought. "I see... Listen very carefully. I will agree to support you and in doing so I would be risking my own neck and taking police resources so here is the thing. I will give you my support in exchange for results. If you go through with this and bring me some good news. I will be extremely happy and I will reward you and do my best for her. But if you come back to me empty handed. She will get her reduced jail time but you will be suspended and interrogated about your actions. Do I make myself clear?" Peter started breathing hard as he chief finished... This is what he was seeking but the terms were harsher than he expected. But he was willing to go through with it no matter what, and Marley pretty much had nothing to lose. "Crystal... Now the plan I have in mind is that we will let Marley go in with the file, I'll be right on her heels, following her while staying hidden. The police team would be close by, I will watch the situation and see what will be going on, and on my signal the police force will go in." He looked at Marley. "What do you think of that?"
Marley gritted her teeth as she waited for a reply from the chief, returning to the position where she was leaning back slightly and had her arms crossed over her chest. He would either take that badly or he would take that very badly. It probably wasn't a good idea for her to say what she did to him.Ticking him off was not what she needed to do and, besides,Peter had told her to keep her mouth shut aside from questions. She just couldn't help it there, though. It was impossible to listen to him making comments about her like that and not send some fire back! She'd have to be a miracle worker to not open her mouth with a comment like she made coming out first. If somebody wanted to get a dig at her, then they had better be ready for her to dig even deeper. However, she made the mistake of glancing over at Peter and when she noticed the look of anger on his face, she cringed slightly.Yeah,he took that how she figured he would take it,but she couldn't help but feel a little...guilty.His butt was on the line almost as much as hers was so whatever she did would come back on the both of them. Why do I even care what happens to him?I can't stand him! She thought as she mentally shook her head at herself. However, she second guessed the fact that she still despised him.Maybe it was because he gave her this chance that she couldn't get herself to get that boiling feeling of hate she had towards him before. He'd basically showed her mercy and that was something she'd never expected to get.Not from the police...definitely not. However, she didn't have any more time to ponder on that subject because the chief was opening his mouth to speak. She felt herself holding her breath as she waited to hear what he was going to say.It was going to be a comment about what she said, she knew it.And it would probably be much more than a comment. However, the words came out calm and didn't burn like the fire he used before, and she relaxed entirely afterwards. She had to learn how to hold her tongue,no matter what the situation was. Then she looked over at Peter when he mentioned the location."Yeah...don't remind me..." She mumbled as she huffed and shook her head.Of course she couldn't have picked a more protected area. The trees had thinner trunks which made hiding much harder...if somebody wanted to watch what was going on,they would have to be really careful. However, they had the cloudy night on there side and,if they kept going at this rate, she would make it there before the sun began to rise.
Marley's gaze locked with Peter's and she,for some reason, got a feeling of fear. There was so much riding on this, and not just for her.He could lose his job which probably meant everything to him...why did she care?!Oh,forget about that, she didn't need the stress of worrying about what the heck was going on inside of her head right then. She had to focus on what was going on.So she looked away from him and instead focused on the chief once again.Peter's words hit her focused ears and she sighed ever so quietly. At least somebody trusted her and seen the truth in what she was doing. The lessened jail time was just a bonus. She would have a hand in stopping the monster that was The Ghost and the feeling of satisfaction she was positive she would get from it would be worth everything.Even helping the police. That thought sent a shiver down her spine, but it was interrupted by the chief speaking again. He agreed! He actually agreed! She couldn't imagine him actually agreeing to it after how he was before! And no matter what happened she would be getting her end of the bargain. When the next thought hit her,she looked over at Peter. If they couldn't get good results from this he would be suspended plus some. He'd end up losing, pretty much. When he agreed to it,though, she raised an eyebrow in surprise, but quickly lowered it when she realized that the chief was still very much there. She thought on his plan for a few minutes, working through all of the possible scenarios in her head.It was a good plan,if there was more cover and they knew what to expect from whoever was meeting her."It would work if there was more cover...the woods isn't sparse, but there's enough space between the trees that makes staying hidden difficult, nightfall or not.The more people we bring along the higher chance we have of getting spotted. If they stay farther behind...and I mean farther behind then I'd be fine with that. You'll just have to be careful with how you go about moving around.I don't know who's meeting me and I don't know if there'll be more than one person or if there will be people in hiding-- and no offense, but I'm sure that those guys would be able to hide better than you guys would be.I'm even nervous with you sticking so close...I don't know what I'll be up against and it can't backfire..." Her voice got quiet towards the end and her gaze went to her lap. What were they planning? The unknown was definitely scaring her.
