Mistral
Mistral encompasses a terrain of vast valleys, hilltops, and mountains, along with many forests. The nation of Mistral itself is known to be a place that has many ecosystems within its terrain. Most of these ecosystems are made of wetland like environments, mainly consisting of swamps and marshes, with the occasional bog, mudflat, and mangrove in the southern parts of its lands.

The outskirts of Mistral are often associated to the lower classes of the nation's mountain like hierarchy. The lower you go, the more swamps, bogs, and crime you tend to find.

  • Haven Academy
Haven Academy is located on a hilltop that has multiple roads leading and directing to Mistral City, as well as other streets that lead to shortcut paths to other cities and settlements. In front of the Academy is a long walkway about the width of a entire football field that leads to the main entrance of the academy, and several other buildings next to or off to the distant side of the Academy.

    Locations

    Centurion
The Centurion Building is a building used mainly for sparring practice, simulation drills with advanced equipment, and evaluating students during training sessions. It is west of Haven, directly to its left. The Centurion has an office that overlooks multiple rooms in the building much like a security office has multiple screens to ensure the safety or security of a building. These monitors can be used to observe outside residence or observe the separate rooms within the building that can be used for training / sparring purposes.

    Haven
The main building and the place where all general lessons outside of field practice, is taught. Haven has 12 floors. It harbors multiple elevators that can be used to facilitate ease, instead of relying on stairs (if you want to take the lazy route), and the top floor, is known as the Eagle Eye Nest.

    Eagle Eye Nest
Is the name of the top floor and area where the Headmaster can be found. The 11th floor, the floor below it is where Staff and Faculty can be found. Eagle Eye Nest gives a pleasant bird's eye view of Mistral City, and the many settlements below it.

    Southpark Fields
Southpark Fields are the woody plains and forest regions located directly behind Haven Academy. These plains have streams, rivers, and the lower you go a mudflat, marsh or two and are often used as field practice and have protective barriers placed on certain sections of the fields where very weak Grimm are present. These barriers cut off any chances of wild magical or mystical creatures from getting into the Academy or breaching into Mistral City's territory. They also serve to stave off and prevent the weaker Grimm present in those areas from getting inside.

Students as well as some visiting Paladins, tend to use these vast forest fields and the multiple labyrinth like divisions in it, for practice or polishing ones skills before going on missions or facing general Grimm.

    Gym & Cafeteria
The cafeteria is located northeast of Haven and the Gym where one can exercise is just south of the Cafeteria itself.

    Angel's Peak
Angel's Peak is the infirmary and medical center located east or to the right of Haven, and it is the place where most medical diagnosis, care and aide can be provided.

    Odessa
Is the building right next to Centurion that can be used to evaluate Aura. It is generally where Aura studies tend to be conducted.

Prof. Grand

Haven | Grimm Studies

"Apologies for being late." It was the first band of words any of them heard from him this afternoon as he entered the room. Just another day, a month after the Academy had opened its doors. "Duty called early in the morning and it took longer than I expected to wrap up." He explained, and it was probably an explanation they may have heard before. Augustus Grandeur was known for being fashionably late. Even in the classes he was supposed to be teaching.

Footsteps that stepped across a clean tiled floor, each made the lightest of sounds; each with a gentle clack or a light tap tap, despite the fact this man and teacher, was exactly ten minutes late to his own class, for the fifth time this month.

Row by row, a finger tapped the long aisles that made up the seats of each group of students. Whether they sat with their peers or whether they sat with friends was irrelevant to Augustus or as he preferred to be called by his students, Prof. Grand. What mattered to him, was whether any faces were missing. After all, much like college, people tended to skip the first few days or even weeks of a class. Especially when very little happens outside of revisions and the occasional tests only done to ensure no one had been slacking off before the Academy opened its doors.

"Well", Prof. Grand began, his eyes skimmed the large room once and touched on the only faces that were actually there. "Let's begin, shall we?" He didn't really wait for a reply.

"It's been exactly four weeks and five days since you all came to this Academy" he shrugged as he began undoing his coat cuffs and added, "probably, for some of you, this hasn't been your most exciting time." His eyes turned to the cuff he was undoing and when it popped off, silver trimmings and all, he took off his trench coat and hung it on a nearby coat rack at the farthest corner of the room. "Wasn't for me when I first joined, so if it was for some of you, great." He said simply. "Standard procedures require us to do this kind of stuff, since anyone who passes the Guardian Exam can join an Academy at any time so long as they've been given the green light and applications are still open. We're basically required to do this to make sure you don't screw up or anyone screws you up, out there on the field. And", he stressed. "So no one has to send your loved ones the bad news."

"But" he chimed with a change of topic, "you all will be glad to know we're finally going to be getting down to something good."

His eyes scanned the room once more, "Or at least, most of you should know considering everyone had emails sent to their Sentry Licenses, and any other gizmos you kids lounge around on these days that classes officially start today. So since everyone's here, let's get down to one quick thing I wanted to bring up before we actually start our very first lesson. "

THUNK!

The sound of his hand came down hard on the blank white wall right behind him. A sound, that echoed all across the large room to ensure it woke up or got everyone's attention.

Augustus Grandeur, was also well known for being a fan of unnecessary drama.

He smiled, and then with his strange orange colored eyes, that almost glowed in the artificial light from above, he looked at each and every first year in the room and then let the smile drop from his face. "Answer me this." There was no warmth in his tone. Strict and stern, like a parent ready to scold a child, Prof. Grand asked the whole class one simple question: "Why are you here?"

It was a question some or all already knew the answer to. But it was not the question that had ever been addressed once since the Academy opened its doors.

"...or even better", Prof. Grand said before anyone could say a word. "Why are we; you, me, every Paladin teaching you, every Sentry outside of this class you've met or yet to meet-- why are we here?" He asked, then elaborated. "Why are you" -he pointed to someone, anyone at random in the room- "here, hm? Why come to Haven Academy? Why risk your life to come out here and join this institution? Are you here for selfish reasons?" He asked then didn't say a word. The silence that stretched brought an eerie feel to the atmosphere. Then just when it looked like he may have been waiting for someone to say something, Prof. Grand turned, taking a step then several more forward. Almost like a true instructor would during a lecture.

"Are any of you here for fortune, perhaps? Fame, maybe? A little 'dosh' as you kids say. Or were you made to come here because of your family? Out for revenge, perhaps? Do you have this ideal view that by becoming a Paladin you'll make a huge difference in the world? Are you here to maybe sabotage us, the Obelisk Academies, because of some motive? Prove something to the world, maybe about yourself, your species even?" His eyes scanned the room when he turned his head back to them and stopped looking out the large open windows that displayed the clear skies outside.

"In my years as being a Paladin, and early in my times as being a Sentry; you see a lot of shit. You all, have probably seen a lot of shit before coming here. But right now I want you to answer me. Anyone of you can answer me. Pick one, pick both, or don't answer at all; why are you here? And why are we here right now? What do you understand about what you're aiming to achieve here?"

He crossed his arms and waited. Eyeing anyone that may or may not speak up.

Are you serious the dude was late and now he wants to be loud? Oh how she would have given any other teacher her mouth at that point. Still talking shit to Grand wasn’t the best idea on day one no matter how much fun it’d be. It didn’t help that he was a long winded asshole too. She threw her feet up on her desk and leaned back in her chair. Medals didn’t mean shit in a classroom, the big question was could he teach.
This challenge of why they were here though, that automatically was making him interesting in her books. She slammed her feet down and laced her fingers together as she leaned into the table. She could feel her grin going from ear to ear. Time to play, show how good you are teach.
“Hmm? I mean I dunno about everyone else but I play to win. I’m here to get licensed, kick ass, and then go back to my country to beat up Grimm the rest of my life. Ain't that what you do?”

It wasn’t like she had meant to fall asleep, but the past four weeks and five days had been ... tiring, to say the least. There were a lot of changes brought to Terra’s lifestyle, especially in regards to her usually messy and badly organized schedule. Being homeschooled all her life, the girl never had to worry about waking up and going to sleep at exact hours, nor about missing meals or classes if she slept in. That brings us to another thing that the bear faunik had yet to get used to: the dorms. As an only child, living under the same roof with a father who had a decent income, it came as no surprise that Terra had a bedroom all to herself. She never had to worry about accidentally waking someone else up or –most importantly- about someone else waking her up. It didn’t help that, unlike a certain polar bear faunik she knew all too well, the brunette was a surprisingly light sleeper – the faintest of sounds or the smallest ray of light were enough to jerk her awake. To put it simply – Terra didn’t have a good night’s rest in what seemed like an eternity. However, by this point, the student was convinced she was tired enough to take a rest in the middle of an earthquake despite her sleeping tendencies. That is way, taking advantage of Prof. Grand’s –as he insisted on being called- inclination of arriving late to his class, the brunette thought it would be alright if she rested her tired eyes, for just a few seconds ... which, of course, ended with her completely dozing off.

The girl had been lost in the land of dreams for at least five minutes when a loud "THUNK!" suddenly jolted her back to the realm of the living. Her lime green eyes snapped wide open as she rose her head from the desk, where it was previously hidden behind her crossed arms. Glaring at no one in particular, not too happy at being awoken so abruptly but also knowing she shouldn’t have been asleep in the first place, Terra subtly stretched her arms, before straightening her posture and moving her eyes –which had dark circles underneath by now- onto Prof. Grand.

If the sudden wake-up call didn’t startle Terra enough, the professor’s questions surely did. The brunette’s hand subconsciously reached for her bear ears, safely hidden from prying eyes underneath a mess of hair styled into two buns on the sides of her head. She knew the answer all too well ... but she couldn’t give it.

Half of the reason for her being here had to do with proving her father wrong. Perhaps a small part of her also wanted to be closer to the mother she never properly knew by following in said woman’s footsteps and becoming a Paladin. However, another major reason had to do with showing everyone how great a Faunus could be. How there was no difference between them and humans! ... However, in order to do that, Terra had to hide her bear ears. Perhaps there were other, simpler, ways of achieving her goal, but this was the path she choose. She was determined to stick to it no matter what.

Crossing her arms over her chest, Terra let out a sigh before she started to scan the room, curious about what others had so say about this matter, wonderring if everyone would simply stay silent ... yeah, probably not. Not everyone was an asocial person like her. Someone was bound to make some kind of big declaration, sooner or later.

Aaaand there goes Larisa.

Ivan Sablich
Haven | Grimm Studies

Twiddling fingers and patient silence. Ivan, was bored.

When your whole life revolved around you waking up earlier than anyone else usually did, it was a hard habit to break when you virtually had to do something similar for school. Although granted, the hours Ivan awoke at would be considered absolutely horrendous to the hours other people tended to enjoy sleeping off.

Speaking of sleep, looks like someone's dozing off again. And she was. Terra, as little as he'd interacted with her and from his own position south of her and a few others, gave Ivan the chance to see that this girl was passing out yet again. For one brief second, he thought to awaken her. Give her a prod in the shoulder, a gentle nudge but that thought shifted and changed when he heard the doors open and the footsteps of one late, Prof Grand strolling into the room like it was a carefree Monday. Which, to some extent he supposed it was.

The past few weeks hadn't been too interesting and if the professor had any point in where he was leading with his spiel, it was that these past few weeks had in fact been quite dull. The only reason he attended the classes regardless, was because he always expected something different to happen.

Even if his hopes were more or less dashed each day, missing a single day simply wouldn't do. Money was squandered on this dream of his, and that money would not go wasted.

And it was a good thing also, because Prof. Grand's question had Ivan realize just how tense his shoulders was in a way he hadn't noticed before. The question the Paladin asked, was a....very good one. Thought provoking. And it was a question he had no problem answering. From day one, he knew what he wanted to do, and even if life had gotten around to pushing back from time to time, that goal of his hadn't changed.

Ivan, oddly enough, raised his hand even though he knew he could just call it out. More out of a sign of respect than out of a necessity, but before the first syllables left his mouth, his eyes zoned in on a girl.

A rather fascinatingly muscular one at that.

Larisa. It was obvious from the tone she may have been grinning. That or perhaps her body language was what may have given Ivan the impression she was just being complacent intentionally. A bit annoying, he wouldn't lie, but her answer was one he could respect, even if the way she'd portrayed it wasn't one he entirely appreciated.

Grand merely offered her a grin in response, completely amused. "Good answer." Was all he said. "Anyone else?"

And that's when Ivan jumped in.

"Over here sir!" Ivan called and when the eyes turned his way he awkwardly cleared his throat and further loosened his tie. "To answer your first question, I'm here to help my family, and anyone else I can by becoming a Paladin. For your second question, it's my belief that we're all here to kill and maintain the trouble Grimm cause in our daily lives, and eventually find a way to completely eradicate them."

Answer said, Ivan put his hand back down and tilted his head to the side, eliciting a pop. Now all he had to do was listen or see if others would join in.

THUNK!
Able looked up to the teacher. He set down his screwdriver next to his watch and leaned forward, resting his chin on his palms. This teacher was always interesting. Always doing something surprising. Able threw his feet forward kicking his heels on the ground. He was the only interesting part about the last four weeks. The stuff they were doing was more boring then watching paint dry, or grass grow, or watching clouds fly by. But Professor Grand always had a grand attitude. Able exhaled out of his nose, he wished that someone could hear his thoughts.

Able hadn't even noticed the professor came into the room until he smacked the wall. He was too busy trying to install a self destruct feature into his watch. It was an older watch, he found it at his old neighbors house when fixing their computer and asked if that could be a part of his payment that day. It was the T9-52 Black Leather. They were notorious for having way too much extra space and were too big so they only made about 1000 of them. It was a lucky find. But it was also just a normal watch, until today! Or at least that was the plan. But sadly he didn't bring enough pieces with him.

Able knew the answer to the professors first question. He was here to make more fun things to use. And a side benefit of money to help his dad. But why were other people here? Able tapped his cheek with his index finger and looked up to the ceiling. He really couldn't think of a reason everyone was there, everyone has there own reason. Speaking of, some people wanted to share there reasons. Larisa stated her reason, it was kind of cool sounding. But if she wanted to win she'd need one of his inventions. Though he had no idea what she was capable of so who knows what she'd need.

Then Ivan rose his had. He gave a good answer to both questions. Though the second one was way too obvious, it almost wasn't fair, it was like a trick question if he was looking for an answer like that. And Ivan was a nice guy but he's like, too nice. He just wanted to help people for what seemed like no reason. Able thought everyone had a reason to help others, or something like that. Able threw his arm up and bounced in his seat. "OOH! Me me me! I'm here to make sweet new inventions for other Paladins to beat Grimm's easier! And other stuff, I think!" Able calmed back down and gave a smile to the rest of the class. This was so exciting! Able put the top of the watch back on and screwed it back together for now. He slid it into his pocket and leaned back onto his palms waiting for someone else to response.

The teacher was late again. Come on dude you cannot do this, he won’t be able to take this much longer. He should have just came in fifteen minutes late instead, coming early was never good for him. If he had then maybe then something would have happened by now. He started drumming out the beat in his head with his left hand and feet. His fidjecting was going to get more noticeable unless the dude showed up soon.
And there he was, thank the aviators. Seong sat up as he focused on each word the professor said, after all he wanted to start the year off right. A shiver sent down his spine as the professor mentioned telling your loved ones the bad news. God, that’d be awful. Not only would he be an embarrassment for sis, he just didn’t think his family would handle another loss before their grandparents. The whole it’s tragic for a parent to bury their child and what not.
He jumped as the back wall was slammed. Dude unnecessary he was already listening. Immediately the professor went into a barrage of questions. He didn’t have the courage to raise his hand and then try to put it in terms that sound better than for the money. He slumped a bit in his seat before a familiar fiery redhead had already slammed her boots down onto the floor.
    Fucking Rasporians.
He waited for the teacher to explode outwards and was pleasantly surprised he didn’t. Goodie goodie went next, and damn wasn’t that a cookie cutter answer. Not that it made it bad he guessed. If he had the chance he’d aim for the same but you couldn’t just claim that type of idealism without some serious teasing in your path. Able’s answer was vague but pretty fitting from what he knew of the dude.

“Ugggh why is he having us do this… Do I have to do this too?”
He grumbled at Able’s side hoping that the teacher didn’t drag everyone in or this would be a dramatically boring first day. He went to lay on the desk facing more towards able rhythmically tapping on the surface finding himself humming as well. At least Able brought along things to play with lucky dude.

Nuadha Uilithir

What a glorious day it was! The sun beamed in through a crack in his open window, and its gentle caress warned him that the day was nigh and he should get a move on! Nua freshened and dressed himself, taking his time on his walk to class. The campus was lovely; the flower beds were in bloom. He'd be lying if the thought of sitting in a classroom on a day like this did not excite him nearly as much as the prospect of say, running through the fields of the greenest green grass, with the wind at his back.

But he was a student, first-and-foremost, of the Academy. And a good student he would be! Even if the material thus far had been less than enthralling. Arriving on-time, Nuadha took an open seat toward the front. He spent the rest of his free time talking excitedly with a friend he'd made in class a few days - or perhaps weeks - prior. Everyone was so friendly! They'd only known each other a month, but Nuadha felt like he'd become fast friends with everyone in the class, despite what they each might have thought to the contrary.

As he recounted the tale of his morning musings, Nua watched his friend recoil from something that was outside his field of vision, and wondered for the briefest of moments what it could've been. Thunk! The sound made him jump a little, and he swiveled around on his seat to find what the cause of it had been. Professor Grand was pacing across the front of the classroom. Amazing! He'd scarcely noticed him at all until he'd made a sound.

Why am I here? The question confused him. The Why are we here? confused him even further, and in his confusion he became indignant. Was it not obvious why he was here? Why they all were here? Surely, Grand couldn't be asking the question seriously. Ah-ha! It must've been a trick-question. Not caring much for being tricked, the young giant chose to remain quiet, though he found himself nodding along vigorously at each of his fellow classmates' answers. All good ones! He agreed. Their reasons were now his, as well as their own. Is this what Professor Grand meant by, "We"? If so, then it would be unbecoming of him not to share his goals, if only out of respect for his peers who had done him the same courtesy.

He didn't wait to be called on. Instead he stood up in place and waited for the previous classmate to finish before beginning himself. In a crisp, clear voice he stated, "I am Nuadha, and I am here to become stronger and become a Licensed Paladin!" He sat back down and smiled to himself for having done so. That was the reason, put plainly. He was sure that, at their most base level, his classmates' reasons were aligned with his own. What other reason for being at the Haven Academy could there be?... But there was another reason - a secret reason - for his being here. Twas a selfish one, and one he'd never told another living soul, because he did not yet feel himself strong enough to be worthy of it.

The Obelisk Academies were not what she'd been expecting. It was painfully dull and boring. Still, every day, Aruru participated in these classes and payed close attention to the teacher's every word. She had renewed respect for her father. So this was the suffering he had to endure to become a paladin...

Even as the weeks passed by, and the lessons were slowly forgotten, there was one thought which stuck with her. 'Why's this human always late? Hah, he's lucky I'm so patient and benenevol-something.' Her father took pride in always being early, so this human had no excuse for coming last.

Then, after a loud thunk which caused her ears to twitch, the teacher asked a weird question. Several people, whose names she didn't remember, answered before she could. Still, she could easily recognise those spectacular muscles. "Ain't it obvious? I'm here for fortune and glory! I'll become the bestest paladin since my pops!" She proudly proclaimed, puffing her chest out.

The teacher was late again, so Faris had taken the initiative to take out a ball of black yarn and two thin steel needles... and started to knit. In his defense, he argued that knitting helped him to memorise patterns and shapes needed for a further application of his Qin, but even he knew it was just an excuse. He liked it. Unlike drawing and painting, the products from knitting have an application that could be be of use, especially in winter. He made a sweater for himself when the weather went cold last year. Maybe a scarf for this year?

A few moment later, the door to the room was opened. Faris lifted his head to see Professor Grant entering the room, spouting some excuse for his tardiness. Not that he particularly mind it. It was a nice change of pace from the always on schedule academy. With the professor in class, he slipped back the needles, yarn, and unrecognisable piece of cloth into his pocket. It was the first day, after all. At least he would listen to the opening lecture.

...or so he thought, but it was a bit dull. Yes, he knew the procedure was needed for safety. No, he didn't want to make his parents grieve, but didn't everyone who sit here know about it? Midway through the lecture, Faris had started to knit again. A black and white scarf would be nice. Or maybe he should go for black and a shading of grey? Ah, maybe he should learn sewing as well. He never practise how to sew, but it shouldn't be too different from knitting. His mind wandered off to some unrelated trivial matter after a while.

THUNK!

Startled, The needles pierced through the wrong hole and tangled up the yarn he had been using. Faris hastily tidied up the yarn and cloth before paying attention to the professor again. The sudden sound startled a few students out of their daydream, much like how he was startled. A series of questions followed the call. He shrunk in his seat as the question continued. He didn't like those type of questions. There was no right answers other than what the one that give the question thought as right. Well, not that it stopped some people from answering.

Larisa jumped the gun and answered in her laid back manner. The Professor seemed to be happy about that. Ivan and Aeros followed, their answers reflecting themselves quite well. His motivation wasn't as pure as the first three student, though. He aimed for the fund given for Licensed Paladin. And reward for fullfilling quests. Then the student beside him stood up.

"I am Nuadha, and I am here to become stronger and become a Licensed Paladin!"

...eh? Is that kind of answer fine? Nuadha sat down with a satisfied smile.

"Nuadha, that answer... isn't that why everyone is here?"

Nuadha just answer why everyone was here, right? The professor's second question. Faris admitted that his answer was correct, but the simplicity of it left a sour taste in his mouth. Couldn't the professor phrased the question less grandly if the answer was that? A questionnaire would do if he just wanted to know everyone's motivation.

The last few weeks were not easy for Ramona. The world was a big place with all kinds of possibility, her mom had told her that when she was just a little child, but she didn’t expect it to be so different. For almost a month she had not noticed any shady stalker follows her steps, any bandit attempts to mug her on the street, nor did she receives any death threat or silly blackmail. Her roommate had also not attempted to murder or at least steal her belonging when she asleep, Ramona was forced to stay awake for four days straight, waiting for the roommate with a knife under her pillow to set an example, which was fruitless. Furthermore, a month had past and the number of her class roster showed no sign of dwindling by infighting. The recent events reminded her of the martial law that one time in her hometown, which did no help to her anxiety at the moment. This must be what people call culture shock.

Due to her easy-going nature, Ramona can adapt to most environments quickly in the past. This time, she also determined to readjust herself into this bizarre peaceful atmosphere. Which… is hard to find a middle point. In the past, she already had the tendency to let her mind wander the moment danger is not present, these days, the girl struggled to stay awake without the usual adrenaline rush. As soon as she accepted the truth that actual danger does not exist in this academy, her attention span had dropped alarmingly.

At first, the silver hair girl had made an effort to stay focused on the mind-numbing lesson of Prof. Grand. It didn’t take long for her to realize over half of her classmates’ dead-inside look everytime the Prof took the stage. As a part of her goal to adapt to this new life, Ramona gladly followed their example and let the Professor’s monotonous voice go in one ear out the other.

THUNK.

The sound caught her off guard, she didn't realize Prof. Grand had entered the room. Maybe she did, but her brain refused to acknowledge such a useless information into its memory. The man really was in a good mood though. She would almost feel guilty to let him disappoint. Or not, Ramona couldn’t convince herself that this shenanigan had anything to do with the lesson.

But reasons, huh? Of course, Ramona had not forgotten hers. It started with the griefs and guilty feeling over her brothers’ death. What used to be her sense of purpose also had died that day when her mother disowned her. The very world she had been living in, proudly calling it hers and all that statuses, relationships and connections suddenly became a reminder of her failures and everything she had lost. The last lifeline for her was mother’s words: “Go and find a reason to fight that not just for her own life”. Which she did. There was nothing left for her in Vacuo, but she was determined to use her gun differently, to seek an ideal worthy to fight for that not for the sole reason of survival. Ramona acknowledged all that griefs, losses and determination as what made her herself, and there no point being ashamed of them. So she waited for her turn and proudly answered Prof. Grand, with a glimpse of confident in her eyes:

“I’m here because my mom told me to, sir!”

Emi had situated herself more towards the back of the class, as she commonly did. She never much cared who sat beside her so long as it wasn't a human. An empty seat was better than that. Her large, fluffy tail gently swayed to and fro as she waited for the ever-tardy teacher to show up. Finally the man came in with apologies she had already heard several times before. As expected of a human. Of course, she couldn't really disagree with what he was saying. This was far more boring than her parents had led her to believe. She thought she'd be fighting for the sake of Fauniks everywhere, gloriously slaying Grimm and saving people. Yet all she was doing was sitting in a classroom being bored nearly to tears. A loud THUNK brought her back to the here and now as the professor posed a question. A very, very, long-winded question. Yes, we get it, we know what the question is, stop repeating it.

As expected various people chimed up. Some being more cliche than others in their reasoning. The redhead being blunt, the green-haired boy saying something so worthless he may as well have remained silent, the blonde shouting about inventions with the enthusiasm of a ten year old. Even her fellow faunik decided to chime in. Granted, the jackal's comments caused her to give a sidelong glance to the nearby wall as one of her ears fell the side. But she could forgive the girl, a little earnestness was never a bad thing. If she was being honest she was half tempted to stand up and give her reasons. But she had done well to keep her true feelings mostly under wraps, no sense in spilling the beans now. So instead she opted to remain in her seat. The overarching reason they were there should be obvious, so hopefully the good professor would be satisfied with the responses and move on.

Prof. Grand's late appearance didn't surprise him one bit, and it was something he had already come to expect from the man within the time the academy opened. Nic watched the man rather dully from his seat, his proper posture contrasting with his hands being in his pocket. He had been waiting silently in his seat, observing the others around him. The only time he had moved was when he was changing seats to be further away from Able, who seemed to be tinkering with something before Prof Grand had arrived, and whatever it was he was doing, Nic had no intention of being close by to find out. Of course that was all in the past now, and the man of the hour was prancing around his own stage.
THUNK
Annoying, but not something that surprised him. Nic was already bothered by Prof Grand, but not for the same reason as some of the others would have. It was silly, but just seeing his eyes made his blood boil, even if the holder wasn't the one he was mad at. Just that simple reminder forced him to turn his attention elsewhere, and as luck would have it, Larisa was already demanding it. He remembered her name due to her defining features and because of the Rasporian blood in her veins. Hearing her outburst nearly brought a grin to his face. Nearly. Then the next one answered, Ivan if his memory didn't fail him.
A vanilla answer for a vanilla boy, if only he had some Rasporian blood in him like Larisa did.
The same boy Nic had chosen to keep his distance from peeped in next, far to excited for this morning. Did he really need to become a paladin to create stuff? Surely Atlas had places for someone like Able.
When Nuadha spoke, Nic paid careful attention to avoid staring at him. Something wasn't right about that man, but he wasn't sure what. Maybe his unrealistic beauty was unnerving to him, he wasn't sure. All he knew was that it was best not to think about how gorgeous Nuadha for a man, especially since he was one of the eldest ones here. Just trying not to think about his eerie looks made Nic completely miss out on the man's answer. Surely it was something average, but he still cursed himself for letting that demon distract him.
The faunus girl spoke next, and unfortunately he never bothered to remember her name. To some extent it bothered him to be missing that information, but she didn't seem very relevant yet and her answer to the question solidified that thought. Ramona was after her, and compared to the others he answer seemed rather silly, yet he oddly found it to be respectable. That was all he could say about it, because as of now he didn't know the full extent of her reasoning. To be fair with the others, they probably had more to them than what they were giving off, and writing them off so early would be his own downfall if he let it.
Slowly, Nic slid down in his seat in a slight his faunus ears tilting back slightly as he let himself relax just a bit. Just like some of the others who chose to keep their words tucked inside, he held his tongue. So far 6 students spoke out, and the others didn't. He would be making note of which spoke, and which didn't. Now was the time to build up information on them.

Just as the professor's question was being answered by multiple people, Reid came running in from the hallway, panting. He put his hand against the wall, catching his breath, and slowly trudged over to his seat. Looking around at the other people in the class, he sat down pretty far to the back, behind another obvious Faunus - a girl with two large, canine-looking ears popping out of her head. He smiled and let down his bag next to him, still breathing heavily from his full-sprint down to the classroom.

"Sorry I'm late..." He said, leaning back and closing his eyes in a feeble attempt to rest after the hundred-metre-dash.

Able smiled and whispered to Song, chuckling lightly. "Because it's fun. You should say something, it's exciting." He sat his feet flat on the ground. Able pushed back with his legs and leaned back into his chair, raising the front two legs of his chair. He rested his weight equally using his toes to help keep the chair stable. He patted his hands on the desk making a quiet thumping noise. Able sat and listened to all the others as they said why they were here. After he spoke Nuadha did, though it was kind of a lame answer. Well, it was short and sweet. Able leaned over to Song and whispered to him again. But right before he said anything, Faris called out Nuahda.

He put his chair back onto all fours and leaned forward slightly, smiling at them. "It was a boring answer!" Able exclaimed putting on a frown. He sat back again, waiting for more people to respond. He looked back to his watch to check the time. it was 1:10, but there was a problem, it was 1:10 about 5 minutes ago. He broke it. He took out his screwdriver and screwed off the top again. He forgot to move one piece back and it was blocking the gear. Able moved it back into place and moved the hand about 6 minutes forward so the watch read 1:16. He slipped his watch back on and listened to the rest of the students say there reasons.

Then Aru spoke up, being her usual self. She was always so confident, it was kind of cute actually. Though the short girl could maybe use something from him. Granted she probably wouldn't accept it, from what he did know, she seemed too confident to accept boosts to self skills. Though after seeing his amazing work she'll have to accept it. Obviously she'll need it after seeing it, no doubt about that. But what would she need? What were her measurements? Maybe she'd want like a wrist cannon or something. Those weren't bad to make. Though maybe she was someone who hated guns, that would be bad. He'd have to see her fight first and then ask after.

After hearing Ramona talk, Able lost interest slightly. Though his interest was quickly restored as Reid ran into the classroom. He was panting and head sweat coating him. He moved to the back with Emi. He apologized for being late, what a good boy. Able thought that Reid was in need for rocket legs. That's definitely what he needed. He's need to work on that. He made a pair years ago but they were garbage. They had no where to keep the fuel and the rockets constantly fell off burning his feet. Though he could make a thin layer between the inside and outside of the shin pieces for a dual purpose. It holds the fuel and distributes it into the rockets and simultaneously cools the legs with the fuel. That should work, though he needs Reid's measurements too. How inconvenient. He should make a prototype anyway, this was a good idea. Able took out a rugged journal and flipped to the back half of it. He sketched a pair of boots and noted where the fuel would be inserted and how the rockets could stay on. He forgot to listen to the others and zoned out thinking of what materials to use.

(I purposely spelled names wrong to signify nicknames. Aru and Song are nicknames x3)

Hmm Grand passes. He’s no pushover but he seemed almost disinterested in it, guess she’d just try harder next time. After all it’s not like the teach could ignore her forever. Like he could but that would be a terrible idea for all involved, except Larisa obviously. Everything worked in her favor, even the unexpected. Especially the unexpected. Now if only the golden boy behind her could become more interesting.

She turned her head to stare down the boy as he continued to talk. What was this for his family and world peace? No way he’s bullshitting he has to be. Who the hell goes out of the way for people they don’t know? Ya no that’s the biggest joke she’s ever heard. She turned her head forwards just in time before she let out a low snort at his answer. Yup good job man fishing for brownie points first day, that’s pretty impressive.

At least the next two were refreshingly honest, to build shit and to get stronger. Admirable goals. Both of which were cool in her book. You do you and cut the bullshit filler. Still cutie with the ears was the best answer yet. Aruru if she was remembering right, gotta keep the eyes on all the fauniks. She turned and gave the girl a wink and small wave before turning to look at the next gal answering.

And damn was she brave with an answer like that. Because your mom said to? Like props to you girl for being willing to say that. From the very little she was remembering outside of the fauniks, and her roomie that was currently nodding off like she was high off dust, the girl was Rani? Remi? Something like that. She cupped her hands around her mouth and shouted over people to the gal.

“Heyyyyy Remi, wanna like explain that more? ‘Cause that was the most interesting answer since Tie boy’s lie”

Ramona was halfway into her own world again after having given her answer, which would've been the most mental effort she spends today if not for a loud question interrupting her little retreat from reality. The attitude and loudness of the voice easily revealed its owner. Larisa, the kind of girl who generates problems wherever she goes with her antic. Up to now, the human girl’s troubles had yet to include Ramona in it, but she doubted the girl actually bears any particular ill will toward others for Ramona to be cautious about.

“Eh,… that’s all there is to it. I fail to see how you would think something more was hidden in my words.” Ramona turned to the professor in case he wanted her to let others speak their turn but then continued anyway. “My mom just told me to stop murdering people for a living, and this economy kind of limits the options for people with my skill set… So here I am, looking for some other paths to live on while killing some more.”

Ramona sat back, she was a little envy of her classmates with their goals and priorities in place. When you think of it, having a goal and purpose in life was normal for most people. Although she used to have them too, thinking back now, how simple but natural those goals were. All she wanted to do was doing her job and spending time with her family. It was as simple and natural as for the others in this class, although for some it would be more correct to call them ambitions, the desires for some grand ideals or dreams. Ramona wondered what she would find for herself, those simple purposes again or some grand ambition that for all her life she hadn’t thought of. But for now, Ramona opened her eyes before she could fall too deeply into her thought.

“Also, thanks for your concern, I guess.”

JeanJean winced when the teacher’s hand hit the wall behind him. She hadn’t expected that. She was counting on him keeping up with his lecture so she could focus on the paint drying and the grass growing. Honestly, who cared? Was it that big a deal? They were adults, for crying out loud; this was like, high school level stuff. She glanced about the room when a good number of the other students answered the teacher’s question, proving that yes, some people did care. The answers ranged from pretty average stuff like ‘protect home and family’ and ‘because momma told me so’. She massaged her temples, and kept her own reasons to herself. What was she supposed to say anyway? ‘I’m here for the treasures, mate.’ probably didn't sound good on paper. Besides, it was her personal creed to never lie. While the others chimed in with their reasons for existing in this Academy, and some with their own remarks, she picked up a pen and started twirling it between her fingers. She liked to tell herself it was practice for her spearwork, but really, it was just another way to pass the time.

The thin, snake boy crashed through the doors, apologising for his tardiness. Cute kid. He always looked like he weighed as much as her spear, and she was always kind of tempted to see if he did, and whether she spun as well as it did, too. She put those thoughts aside for the time being, speaking for the first time today in class. “Oh, don’t worry about it, Reid. You haven't missed anything important. Just a whole lot of noblesse oblige and raison d’etre being tossed about.” Jean twirled her pen even faster, and tossed a look at both Ramona and Larisa. “Some more so than others.”

Reid cracked his eyes open and chuckled at the French he couldn't understand, but could assume the meaning of. "Thanks, Jayjay... Anyone get smoked yet?" He joked, looking around again, then back to Jean. He took off his glasses and rubbed them against his shirt, cleaning them. Of course, doing this, he began seeing everything quite differently than everyone else - Thermally. Seeing everything in its 'natural' blue, green, and red colors was very calming for Reid, since it was how he grew up seeing. Think of it as someone who speaks two wildly different languages speaking their mother tongue.

Once he was finished polishing the lenses of his glasses, he put them back on and cracked his neck quite obnoxiously. This wasn't intentional, but the sound of the air leaving his joints filled the room. Reid sighed to himself, and began straining his eyes to see 'normally' again.

Prof. Grand

Haven | Grimm Studies

"All right, all right." His voice called, possibly interrupting any further responses and maybe ending a few conversations. "I hear you, and I get it. Everyone's got their own reasons for being here. Personal or otherwise. But the real reason I asked you all these questions was to direct your attention to something that a lot of Sentry's don't realize or forget over the years leading up to them becoming Paladins." He raised a remote he had in his hand. Held it up high so the whole class could see it.

A single push, and the whole classroom changed before their very eyes.

Branches grew out of the walls and hung high over heads. Windows disappeared as tall trees, bushes, grass, and vines emerged. Leaves sprung forth, animals emerged out of shrubs or popped out of appearing streams; some normal, others magical like Blubbering Angels or Screeching Spiders. In a matter of seconds the whole classroom became an indoor landscape with wildlife teeming every where and what made it even more bizarre was the fact those very creatures seemed to be aware of each and every person in the room as they either flew over heads, hopped over bodies, or came to land on moss covered desks.

"This", Prof. Grand said voice clear yet humble, his eyes on the scenery, "was Ginyin Forest. It's a forest that existed off the south coast of Vale eighty-five years ago. It stretched from Vale to a small section that crossed into Vacuo's border. That forest has been around for 600 years, and been through more than you or I have been through in our whole lives." Prof. Grand said, and let the words sink in. Then his thumb pressed the button as he said: "This is it now."

Everything went silent. The birds stopped chirping, the fish sunk back into the waters and scattered, and the animals that neared some students or circled over others, froze. Three seconds went by, and every critter turned to stare at Prof. Grand, as a low rumble came from the shadows of the forest behind him.

One second later and a voracious shout filled the whole room as Grimm of all kinds poured into the field and every animal scattered.

Bewoulves, half man, half wolf like demons with claws tougher than diamond and flaming red eyes jumped over students and chased after animals. Paladin of all types, human or otherwise, emerged from their hiding places and dropped down into the danger zone to engage Grimm. Some rode magical creatures like the bear size hyena-like animals known as Ferrangitangs, hunting Grimm down and engaging them in battle. Others, fought Grimm hand-to-hand only to be overpowered or take out several before moving to support their allies.

In minutes, Ginyin Forest, a place of beauty, of life, became a battleground of death, destruction and misfortune. There was no gore in the images as the dust that arose blocked the sights of students from not just each other but the scene. There were no blood piercing screams as when one went down, their silhouettes were swallowed into the dust storm and other sounds of battle; metal on metal, guns being fired, eldritch roars-- cut off any noises. This video, this play that was unfolding before them all had been crafted not to scar the students, but to show them a piece of history that they'd never see reading in a book.

Leaves of every color shriveled up and died, animals that made it out of the dust storm rushed into the shadows only to be chased down by Grimm while some Paladin went after them, while Paladins who drew out their magical weapons, Magic Items, were ganged upon and surrounded by Grimm on all sides forced to fight alongside each other and sometimes even forced to fight against each other to survive.

The beautiful world painted in this class, died. And it only took eight minutes for the world of dust to fade and leave nothing behind but broken weapons, bullet ridden trees, trees contorted with claw marks and signs of a gruesome end. When it all was over, not even the desks remained standing. They were covered in the same scratches or marks. And the only thing left to fill the open, ashy skies and empty burnt forest, was a heavy thick silence.

"Paladins", his voice broke that silence, "have quite a bit of freedom don't you think?" He asked everyone, and as he asked that the class went back to normal. "We get the best gear, get paid the most out of any job you'll ever find, gain free access to restricted areas, the best medication, best equipment, media is in our favor most of the time, and have the freedom to pick who or what we work with or for."

"See when you join any Academy whatever your intentions are, place them second. Especially if they are for ulterior motives. Whether you're a Sentry or a Paladin, your job is to protect and preserve life. If there's an alert on your License, you pick yourself up, hunt down that Grimm whether its 4 a.m. at night and you just went through a bad break up and you kill it. So it doesn't kill anyone else or worse, invite even more. You stop the bad guys even if you have the flu, you reduce casualties, protect those that need it, hunt down valuable treasures that people will misuse if they get their grubby hands on it, and sometimes you may need to make some sketchy deals.

"Outside of that? Do whatever else you want; hunt for lost treasures, do it for money, do it for fame" he smirked, "or sex. OR, whatever else it is you want but the one thing you always" he stressed, "the one thing you always should do if you ever want to be a Paladin worth any shred of actual respect outside of the praise the public gives you, is to protect and preserve the life of all. Because that's the number one unspoken rule."

"Not just your friends." He looked at some. "Not just your family." He looked up towards those in the back. "Not for only your nation, or your species or your race or your own personal affairs alone or whatever delusions you might have. A true Paladin, exists to protect and preserve all life, to the best of our ability, everywhere, and to bring criminals to justice when possible. And that's because if we don't then we can't stop things like this."

Another button was pushed, and what came this time was not a world. But a monster.

Blinking into existence out of thin air, a 80 ft tall bird, wings like a bat, horns like a goat, claws like a lion, tail like a wrecking ball, emerged hunched over, right beside Prof. Grand. It took a step forward, stared at the class, covered in bruises, black oozing scars, and scratches. But despite its many wounds, it stood tall, unabated.

And it watched all of them with empty white eyes that pulsed with blackish purple veins.

"Do I expect everyone here to follow my advice or get what I'm saying?", Prof. Grand asked them. "No." He answered with a smile. "Some of you won't, some of you may try, others won't care or might not even be listening to the rest of this and...that's fine. Paladins are free to do as they choose, just as most of you are either adults or going to be adults soon enough, we won't baby you because we don't have time to, and frankly you're all old enough to make your own decisions and mistakes. All we can do is simply guide you as Sentries and let you pick your own paths to follow."

"In conclusion", he said with a loud clap, "that's my bit of advice. Now then", he looked up at the Grimm that eyed the class, "let's talk about Grimm. But first, any questions?"

In reality, Reid wasn't really paying attention-- Until the room changed into a literal forest.

Looking around at all of the different animals in the room, Reid found a snake hiding in the grass. He smiled and took off his glasses, looking at the reptile, who looked right back at him, as if they had a mutual understanding. Just as Reid opened his mouth to speak to the animal, he heard a loud noise which shook him from his comfortable position and onto the floor. Quickly standing up, Reid looked over to the front of the room, where he saw something that he simply couldn't take his eyes off of - a horde of Grimm rushing through the classroom, which was now of course a forest, scaring off all of the animals.

Reid slowly sat back down, watching the battle between the Grimm and the now-appearing paladins as his fangs revealed themselves out of reflex. His mouth fell agape as his fangs unsheathed themselves, and poked out of his mouth. He'd never seen a Grimm in person, and now that he had, well, it was simply terrifying. After several minutes of watching in awe, the battle swiftly ended, and all of the beasts disappeared along with the paladins, just as quickly as they'd arrived.

After witnessing the intense battle that the professor had unleashed before him, Reid listened to every single word that Prof. Grand said intently. How could he not, after seeing what he'd just seen?

After the lecture, the professor asked if anyone had any questions. Having more questions than he could manage to ask in one day, Reid raised his hand, and shouted,

"UH, YEAH, WHAT THE FUCK?!"

Nic's Faunus ears perked up slightly at the appearance of Reid. The boy was late and just watching him bumble his way in made him wonder how he managed to pass the entrance exams. The cat Faunus simply raised a brow at that but made no comment like Able or some of the others did. He wasn't exactly as sociable as them. Turning his attention back to Prof.Grand just in time to see the remote activating something like a projector. The holographic were far too real, and for a moment Nic thought Qin was being used. In that split second, he triggered his own aura, shifting it towards his eyes to boost his sensory.
It was just a holographic, but it seemed to have been boosted with a creator of some sort. Maybe Able's concept of creating things for other paladins wasn't as mundane as he originally thought it was, and he would have to make a note to check up on the kid on that. Nic remembered hearing about this sort of thing before, but he never has seen it this close. Other than that, Nic wasn't awestruck by the display itself, he was mostly amazed at the tech and Qin use.
The speech Prof. Grand reminded him of one of those classes people took, where the teachers would scare their students into some sort of ideal. Kind of like sex ed having a scare-fest to keep kids on the streets and out of the sheets. Nic raised two fingers together slightly, a style of raising his hand that he was taught to do by a certain professor in Rasporia at a young age. He originally wanted to ask about the holographic projector used, but Reid's hand shot up and the boy's exclamation had forced Nic to break appearances as he stifled a laugh.
"Relax." Nic cleared his throat, his hand remaining out of his pocket still as he poised it at his chin in thought. "It was a simple projection to aid him in scaring you into what he believes is to be the right path of a Paladin. It's as typical as any health class against drugs or underage sex." Although he spoke to Reid, he kept his eyes on Prof. Grand, as he did think of a more appropriate question.
The small Faunus sat up in his seat, continuing his stare down at Prof. Grand, "You're a Paladin yourself right?" He paused only for a second, that part being rhetorical, "Are you the type of Paladin you're advising us to be?"

Nuadha nodded to the affirmative. Yes! That was why everyone was here. He was glad that someone else understood things the same way as him. Faris. He was a good friend, or soon to become one. Another boy, Aeros or Able as Nua had heard him called, chimed in. Boring? Ah. Well, he supposed it was not the most bombastic of responses. The more he considered it, the more foolish he felt. "Ah... I suppose so. How embarrassing." He admitted in a semi-somber tone, but moved on in time to hear the next round of responses.

Larisa was so bold! So inspiring. He thought then that he would have liked to get to know her better. Well, why couldn't he? There was still time, after all. Sometimes he forgot that so little time had passed. They had only just begun! Well, there also was... Ramona! Her answer and subsequent clarification were interesting, no doubt. And Reid. Reid was tardy, but luckily their Professor didn't seem to mind. Ah, what a relief. He would hate to have to watch on as his classmate was scolded, knowing he could do nothing to intervene on his behalf. Luckily the boy seemed to find a certain, sort-of kinship in Jean. He believed that was her name. Jean. Yes, that sounded correct.

Afore long, Grand had started up again with his lecture. Nua watched on expectantly as their professor held some sort of controller aloft. When the change overtook their classroom, the young giant let out a small gasp of surprise. What came next was like nothing he'd ever seen before. In his travels prior to joining the Academy, he and his master had visited many forests. Nu could scarcely recall one as lush and verdant as this. Ginyin Forest. He had never heard of such a wondrous place! Truly, it was breathtaking to behold. He thought he would have liked to live there one day.

Grand lectured on, as the life-like holograms of animals and birds mulled around before them and above them. He was so captivated by their ethereal beauty that Nuadha failed to take note of the subtle change in Grand's tone; truth be told, when several exotic birds took up his overgrown desk as a roost, he stopped listening all together. Not until it was far too late did Nua realize that he was about to bear witness to a bitter tragedy. Then came the Grimm. Evil and perverse, like a flood they rolled over everything. He was forced to watch on as a place that was once green and good was destroyed, soiled by monsters. He was helpless to prevent it.

When it was over, and all that remained was the silence, Nu felt wept warm, bitter tears. They stung his eyes and left streaks upon his cheek. His hands were clenched in fists of rage. Listless, he listened as Grand concluded one part of his lesson and prepared the start of another. The creature that stood before them all watched on silently. It was the same silence as the one that had befallen Ginyin Forest. And as it watched them, Nuadha watched it with a sullen stare.

"Holograms" was the only reply Reid was given. Then turning to Nicolai, Prof. Grand stared at the boy for a few seconds of silence with those strange orange eyes.

He smiled. Then said, "It would be pompous of me to say I am." He replied. "When I first joined the Obelisk Academies, it was in Vale, Beacon Academy. Born and raised right in the capital. And do you know the reason I joined?" Much like Nic's first question was, this was rhetorical also. "It was for fame and glory." He said simply, looking at everyone. "I didn't care about helping people unless it helped me. Didn't care about doing the right thing all the time. In my youth, I wasn't just proud of my heritage, I revelled in it. I didn't expect praise for my name, but I wanted to be lauded.

"I deluded myself into thinking that being a Paladin was the best thing in the world if it meant I could be as famous and as powerful as my ancestors that served the royals of Vale were. Only because my dad, my mother, and grandfather, and others before them had served in the Academies at some point in their lives" That smile almost gained a hint of bitterness as it widened just a bit at the corner of his lips and aged wrinkles slightly appeared in those young eyes.

"I learned the hard way, one day, thinking like that would only get me and others killed." Grand stated with his hands going behind his back. "So to answer your question, I can't say I am the type of Paladin I advise you to be, because that would be hypocrisy. But I can say, I do try. I try everyday, and will continue to till my retirement. And that's why I showed you this. Not to scare you into doing what I think is right, because let's face it that never works. But because I wanted to show you all what you're going into. What it's really like out there. All I ask, is you do your best."

Exhaling slowly from the nose, the smile faded and a calm inviting expression returned. "Any more questions?"

The change in temperature, humidity felt real, but her sensor could still feel something was off, certain parts were too real while others weren’t as much. Only her sense of vision was being deceived completely. And then another change took place. They appeared, the bizarre creatures of destruction. Grimm isn’t it? Their demonic appearance resembled what described in most religions as the world ending harbinger, and maybe inspired over half of them. Ramona, in fact, had never encountered them up close, they are the Paladins’ job. Unpaid gigs were unpopular to mercenary assassins for obvious reasons. But looking at them like this, they were clearly in a different league compared to the small time thugs. Ramona felt neither hesitation nor her blood boiling at the thrill of battle. Despite bearing the demonic image and possibly come from the devil itself, they can be killed just like any other creatures. She only needed to study their vital spots. Uh, is Prof. Grand going to teach us that too?

Ramona appreciated the fact that he didn’t give them a longer moral lesson. Though he could be lighter on the speech about life and what is right. It was nothing more than business to her, funded by tax money and gratitude of the people, the academy’s duty was to protect its taxpayer. The Paladin traded their freedom in job selection for an abundance of privileges. Though it wasn’t an equal trade deal since the Paladins seemingly got more for what they’d given up, it’s business nonetheless. So Ramona only silently waited for the prof to wrap this up quickly and move on to the Grimm. Somewhere behind her, a “what the fuck!” was exclaimed. Reaction really can vary between people.
