(Ok, in-depth, I'd have to look at the in game Intel files about the aliens, but off the top of my head, the drone platforms that are spreadung the Tiberium are acting as a sort of control node for nearby alien forces, that the further away they get from the node their combat effectivness drops)

The ships themselves are controlled by drone platforms the further from a drone a part of their invsion force is. The weaker they are. Probably the only reason the outposts far from the the cities have been able to last. The drones have also been spreading Something we can't identify"

Any time a scientist had tried to get close enough to analyze it... Well." He showed them traffic footage of what happened of the mutations. (Rcticwolf gonna need you to describe the footage)
(Except the mutation isn't that fast, unless exposed to a concentrated form of the crystal, which I haven't deployed yet)
