Dru's memories of magic came from tortured souls that powered his essence. Each of them had been around for hundreds of years reliving their worst fears and expanding their knowledge of magic in the process creating spells and types of magics that should never get loosed upon the world.

The Doctor absorbed the knowledge and once gain would replace incorrect information as he learned more. At the end Dru knew not only ancient Gallifreyan but also hundreds of other languages he hadn't known.
