falling for you™
STARS AND BUTTERFLIES
created by social- plot“Get those corsets laced tighter ladies, for tonight is all about first impressions. You are being presented to every single eligible bachelor in England and your only purpose is to catch their attention. Shoulders back, chin up, don’t let a single hair fall out of place. We don’t have time for silly things such as flowers in our hair or a new style of dress, we have to stick with tradition. You are to stay with your chaperone all evening, only leaving them when you are dancing with a gentleman. If I see as much as one of you sneaking off to cause nothing short of a scandal, rest assured that you will never again be able to show your face in society again.”
Every girl dreams about debuting in society and receiving various gifts and glorious bouquets from handsome men as they try to win their hand in marriage. Why it’s the only thing that these women can hope to do! They were trained to secure a wealthy husband and bear an heir to his title and land. They are expected to do it all while the men bring in wealth and enjoy the fruits of their labor in the shape of their children. Honestly, it’s quite the spectacle. However, there is a proper order to these things, one cannot just stumble upon a wealthy Duke or Lord on the street and expect to marry them. No no, as a lady you must meet your future husband during the season, as only the most respectable bachelors and ladies will be present. Of course, debuting in society and participating in the season is a very romantic thing to think about, but it is a lot more difficult than anyone will ever let on.
The social season has just begun, and various mothers are using this as an excuse to present their daughters to society, naturally causing quite a buzz among the various high-class families. Quite a few participants in this year’s season are unexpected and certainly scandalous. A painfully single Duke is said to be appearing to select a wife, while there are whispers that a baron’s daughter has eloped with a poor farmer, and now her younger sister is taking her place in society. There are rumors about secret love affairs and those who are only looking to swindle people out of their money. It is nothing short of fabulous in the eyes of high society, but it is perfectly dreadful for everyone who is involved. Family names and reputations may be dragged through the mud, things may come out that could ruin the chances of ever getting married, and possibly, the thought of running away and escaping it all might become too overwhelming for anyone to ignore. All we can say is good luck, and please try to have an enjoyable season this year. - the eraCourtship.
Rule number one of courting, a lady must never be alone with a man. It would ruin her reputation if she were to be caught in such a situation. But that's the easy part. The more tricky part is navigating courting someone in front of the ton. Traditionally, potential matches are introduced to each other through friends or chaperones at balls, where almost all individuals are seeking out a partner. If all had gone well and they shared a dance or two, their information would have been exchanged, and the gentleman would send her flowers the following day. If the flowers were well-received, the gentleman may later pay a visit to the family during their "at home" hours where the lady's mother/aunt or chaperon would be present. He might take her for a stroll in one of the walking parks, with a chaperone close at hand. He might even take her riding on horseback or in an open carriage—open being the operative word since riding in a closed carriage could ruin her reputation as quickly as being alone in a house with a man. Courting could be short or take place over a long period of time. At a ball, if she refused to dance with any other man but him, she basically announced to the world that they were engaged.
If she danced with him more than twice in one night, everyone assumed she was either engaged to him or was “fast,” a terrible label for a proper young lady. If he spent a lot of time with her to the point where people began to notice how much they were together, public opinion placed them as engaged. If he failed to make an offer of marriage for her, people said he had failed to come up to scratch and shook their heads and wondered if she were unsuitable or if he were. Either way, the couple’s reputations suffered. At that point, their only option would be to marry or live with tainted reputations. Depending on his status, his reputation would probably recover but hers would likely remain tainted. Once he felt secure she returned his affections, the gentleman would make an appointment with the girl’s father and formally ask for her hand in marriage. His income would be scrutinized and they would draw up a prenuptial agreement called a marriage settlement which included her pin money, dress allowance, jointure, and other ways he’d provide for her, as well as what dowry would go to the man. With all that settled, the father would break the news to the girl and the wedding preparations would commence.
Dancing.
In Regency society, dancing was more than just a pleasurable activity. A young lady of quality taking part in the round of balls and other events that comprised the London season knew she was not there simply to have fun. Her aim (and even more so that of her parents) was to make a good match – to attract a suitable marriage partner from amongst the eligible gentlemen. Preferably a gentleman she liked as well as one of good standing and fortune. Dancing was an important part of this process. It was a chance for a young lady to display the elegance of her person by the way she conducted herself both on and off the dancefloor and for her to meet and converse with potential suitors.. An unmarried lady of quality always appeared at a ball under the protection of a chaperon – usually an older married lady, most often her mother. It was the chaperon’s duty to ensure that her charge’s partners were eligible gentlemen. A lady had to wait, of course, for a gentleman to ask her to dance. If she did not already have an acquaintance with the gentleman, then before he could ask her to dance, he had to request an introduction and her chaperon might prevent this if they saw fit. - rolesThis Season's Ladies.
Lady of Devonshire: Available — The younger sister of the Duke, she has enjoyed the life of a free spirit, able to stay at home and learn all there is about the world. Much more interested in literature than her social endeavors, it came as a surprise when her mother announced that she would be partaking in this year’s season. Debuting and being pranced around like some show pony is the last thing she wants but she can’t say no to her mother.
The Eldest Daughter of Baron Fitzroy: Available — As the eldest daughter, she has always been expected to set the standards for the family. She must choose the perfect husband and save her other sisters from possibly losing the family fortune when her father dies. It’s a difficult price to pay when you have five younger sisters and a sickly mother who can’t fight against her husband’s demands. From the start, she has been doing everything in her power to become the perfect wife, but in the process, it seems like she’s only succeeded in losing herself.
The Daughter of Viscount Brisbane: Available — The only daughter of Viscount Brisbane, she’s been groomed by her aunt since birth on how to become the perfect bride. With no mother to call her own, she grew up with the strong hand of her father and the controlling gaze of her aunt, never allowing her to have a hair out of place or a nail that was ever so slightly chipped. The season is her first taste of freedom and frankly, it would be a waste for her not to enjoy it. So who can fault this newly debuted dove the chance to spread her wings and have some fun?
The Daughter of Viscount Berkely: Available — Raised out in the countryside far away from London’s high society, she was never forced to endure what most of these girls go through. There was no poking and prodding when her corset wasn’t laced tight enough and she didn’t get in trouble for sneaking an extra piece of cake. But now she’s in the public eye and she has to pretend like she knows what she’s doing, even though she hasn’t got a clue. Let’s just hope she doesn’t attract unwanted attention and end up in a nasty scandal.
The Youngest Daughter of Baron Huxley: Available — Her older sister ran away with a farmer and never looked back, leaving [Blank] to pick up where she left off. It was a lot of responsibility to fall on her shoulders, especially since she wasn’t expecting it nor was she planning on debuting for at least two years. Naturally, it’s difficult for a girl who hasn’t been training continuously to step into society and secure a match. She’s pitied by many in society and those in the season this year don’t even feel threatened by her. But maybe they should.
The Second Eldest Daughter of the Earl of Durham: Available — If reputation and status mean anything to you, it certainly doesn’t for her. Rumors have surrounded her since she first debuted at the young age of 17 years old and hasn’t been back in society since. There are stories about her and she never confirms or denies them. The most recent one is her previously being the mistress of a very wealthy and powerful man, but the wife found out and that’s why she’s back in the season, hoping to find someone to tie her down. Now, who would be brave enough to do that?
The Daughter of the Earl of Dorset: Available — A wonderful and perfect daughter, truly a sight to behold. But what's this? It seems her attention has been stolen quite quickly by a certain gentleman. Always finding ways to speak with him, it's become the talk of the ton how she is holding out for him to finally ask for her hand. But will her heart's desire ever be returned? Or will her potential matches fade into the background as she waits, hoping for a fairy tale that will never come true...
The Youngest Daughter of Viscount Talbot: Available — Her debut year, this lovely flower has been quite eager to experience the season after watching her sisters excitedly prepare for it over the years. The stories of romance and drama are far too much for her not to happily indulge in. But perhaps she's too eager. Quite the gossip, you will always find her spreading rumors and gossip she hears, unable to keep it to herself. This lack of restraint may not look badly upon her, but it certainly casts a light on whoever she finds entertaining. Let's see if this season's top gossip will keep her own reputation unmarked.
This Season's Gentlemen.
The Oldest Son of Baron Lyly: Available — Entitled and full of himself, he is rather disliked by this season’s gentlemen. Maybe it’s jealousy, or maybe it’s because this boy has a bad attitude, but he is the one who is known to cause quite a stir. Whether it’s because he messed with someone’s engagement or toyed with a girl’s heart, he has a reputation for making a mess of every social season he attends. Maybe this year he will finally decide to keep his hands to himself and find someone worth settling down with.
The Son of the Earl of Kent: Available — A sweetheart and someone everyone wants a piece of, he’s the perfect husband. Sweet, understanding, kind, smart, what’s not to like? Unfortunately, it seems like his gaze is controlled by his all-knowing mother who knows all the gossip that surrounds every leading lady of this year’s season. With someone like her by his side, he’ll be lucky to sneak one dance in before June hits us with its lovely summer weather.
The Son of Viscount Haddington: Available — Have you ever heard of Viscount Haddington and his son? No? Well, neither have I for that matter! A complete dark horse, nothing but an air of mystery surrounds him, and honestly, he hasn’t done anything to show off his character in the slightest. Just a blank slate and someone the other men need to look out for. I mean how often does a mysterious stranger grace our popular social season with a spotless reputation?
The Former Prince of Westphalia: Available — A prince without a kingdom, how sad. The monarchy ended this year and now this ex-royal is looking for a wife to fill the emptiness in his new home. He is known for his cold exterior and piercing gaze, but maybe there’s more to this prince than you know. He lost his family, his palace, and his title, all he has left is his life and money, and honestly, who can say no to that?
The Oldest Son of Duke Talbot: Available — Being the oldest son of any family must be difficult, but especially so for this particular suitor. His sister is quite famous for marrying a duke who is related to our loving royal family, and naturally high expectations are finding their way to him as well. He has a name and reputation to uphold, hopefully following in the footsteps of his sister and finding quite a perfect match. But what will he do about his family's fortune slowly running out? Wouldn’t it just be embarrassing if he found himself to be just a poor pauper while his sister lives the life of a royal? I’d hate to hear what his father would say.
The Youngest Son of Baron Fitzgerald: Available — Our darling Baron Fitzgerald has done nothing but gift London with the finest bachelors every season. They are all quite dazzling and managed to find equally precious wives within the first month of the event. So why on Earth is this one so different? A son of a Baron who cannot match his brothers in anything other than academics? Why it’s simply laughable! I do hope he can do more than that or he may be the first Fitzgerald to attend every social season until he is an old man.
The Earl of Cornwall: Available — One does not simply become an Earl on a random Tuesday afternoon. Or at least, that's what I assumed. However, I have been proven wrong by the announcement that the title of Earl of Cornwall has been inherited by a... doctor? Oh, Heavens. Well, it seems that our dearly departed Earl left the physical world with no heir to his titles, and instead it fell upon the shoulders of a cousin, someone who had never even stepped in Cornwall in his life. Now thrust into high society, he must find his footing and secure a match. Everyone wants an Earldom but not everyone can keep one. He better act fast or he will be left behind with the scavengers and they are far worse than any illness he has treated before.
The Son of Viscount Stanton: Available — A man of the world, nobody has seen Viscount Stanton's son since he was about 17 years old. It has been some time since then. Some say he got lost at sea, others whisper that he perished in a war, but nothing has been confirmed. His mother, tight-lipped as ever, has only spoken of her son's accomplishments while his father has hidden away during the season, not daring to make a remark. But now, years later, he has returned to London for the season. He looks much different than anyone remembers, maybe it's from the foreign sun, but it looks positively dashing on him. Any doubts or questions anyone has certainly been pushed to the side now that he has returned... But is it really him?
Taken Roles.
Daughter of the Marquesses of Essex: Georgiana Finch — Once considered a jewel of London high society, she has once again returned to London to find a husband. You see, she thought she had stumbled upon the perfect suitor about two years ago, a newcomer who had an abundance of wealth and a charming smile, and he was incredibly fond of her. They courted and were quickly engaged, everything was going according to plan. However, right before the wedding, he had convinced her to elope with him, but he did it to steal her inheritance. He managed to get away with half, leaving behind a broken heart. Her presence this season is causing quite a stir among the ladies and gentlemen. (played by social)
The Duke of Devonshire: Percival Fitzwilliam — Not one to settle down, he hasn’t attended the season since he was 18 years old. He has always been very quiet about his personal life, only rumors about him having a lover hidden away in the countryside giving any information about him. However, since the untimely death of his father, he is now forced to choose a future wife, much to his own disappointment. There’s a possibility he is only doing it for a show as his heart may be completely taken by the one he has kept hidden from the public eye for oh so long. (played by social)
Daughter of Earl Langley: Lydia Langley — This diamond in the rough is someone who has lived a life of luxury, adopted by her wealthy aunt and uncle who raised her as their own. She’s known nothing outside of the world they have spun for her and they intend to keep it that way. However, there are whispers among the high class that she doesn’t belong among them, I mean, after all, she doesn’t even look related to either of them. (played by junegloom)
The Son of Earl Langley: Benjamin Langely — Haven’t you heard? He’s been abroad in Greece for the last three years, soaking up the wonderful oceanside sun and the unique culture the country has to offer. But now he’s back in London and he’s here to show everyone what he’s learned. He may not have stayed in the city of love, but certainly, something has turned this man into a casanova that nobody expected to see. (played by junegloom)
informationWelcome to 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬! This roleplay is naturally based on works such as Bridgerton and Jane Austen novels! However, it will not be including any canon characters from these works! This is going to be a casual-lit roleplay, meaning there is an expectation of three paragraphs per in-character post! This is NOT first-come-first-serve, meaning you will be accepted via PM if I feel your character is a good fit. If you do not receive an invite by the time I specify, your character has not been accepted. Do not contact me asking how to get in, what character you should make, why you weren't accepted. I will not answer. Characters that don't get accepted are simply not accepted because they were incomplete or because they did not fit the roleplay. That being said, Discord is required for this roleplay as it will be our OOC since it's far easier for me to keep track there. This roleplay also has an 18+ rule as I simply do not feel comfortable with having minors in this roleplay. I will be providing a plot summary and F.A.Q here just in case anyone needs it!
Frequently Asked Questions.
Are we able to play queer/NB/trans characters?
• Yes, you can play characters that are LGBTQ+! I will not be demonizing queerness or non-gender conforming characters in terms of jail and things like that, but there will be a stigma against those as marriage wouldn't be legal and things of that nature. It would cause a scandal in the ton as this is high society and things like that should be hush-hush in the eyes of high society. But bring it on!!
Can my character be royalty?
• No. All roles have been given titles that you get to work with. Royalty from within England or outside of it is not allowed!
Does my character have to get married?
• No, your character(s) does not have to get married. It will look bad on them if they do not secure a match by the end of the season but it won't be world-ending. There are plenty of characters who have been in society for a few seasons now.
Are the characters all strangers?
• No, most of these characters know each other from previous seasons or general celebrations throughout the year. That being said, there are a few character roles that specifically have them as newcomers to ton and to high society! So please pay attention to role descriptions.
Can my character be a fake?
• To an extent. There are specific roles where this can apply so please ask me before trying anything!
Do I have to be completely historically accurate?
• No! You do not have to be completely historically accurate! However, you should be mindful of the era in which this takes place in! There is certain etiquette that cannot be pushed to the side so research, ask questions, and read what I have up about courtship and how balls work socially! If you have any questions regarding the Regency era, PLEASE PM ME!
Is there a character limit?
• Currently there is a maximum of two characters per user but I would suggest starting with one to get through applications!
Can I use Bridgerton FCs?
• I personally would prefer it if people stayed away from using Bridgerton face-claims, however, I'm aware they have the most resources for this era at this point in time. If you do use them, DO NOT copy characters from the show/books! That will be an instant disqualification.
Can I create my own role?
• Yes and no. You can present a role idea to me AFTER all current available roles have been filled.
Plot Summary.
The Season has begun in London's high society, causing quite a buzz among the families. Making the journey to London to experience such an exciting time of year is certainly the highlight of many young ladies' and gentlemen's lives. Balls, luncheons, operas, they are all glamorous and filled with potential matches and oh so much drama. This Season in particular is going to be hosting quite a controversial bunch of society members, some of which have not been to London in years. Because of this, competition seems to be rampant and anyone who has gossip or rumors is desperate to spread them. Your reputation is everything in society so to lose it to scandal? Well, you're better off dead, at least in some people's opinions. So will you survive? Will you secure a match?
This roleplay will take place in April of 1813, right at the beginning of the Season. The season is when women can present themselves to society in hopes of securing a proper husband. It’s the biggest event of the year and anyone single and wealthy will be there. There are various balls, dinners, charity events, operas, and luncheons that happen from April until the end of June, in hopes that these settings will result in some matches being made. Women who aren’t able to find a partner during the season are more than welcome to return in the following ones, but they often will have bad reputations for being undesirable. Men of all ages are present at these social events, some of whom are only looking for a young wife to bear their children before they get too old. It’s also possible that people are lying their way into these events, faking their papers and titles, all so that they can pursue someone they truly love.
Roleplay Rules.
• This roleplay is 18+!
• You must have discord as the OOC will be located there
• This is NOT first come first serve
• You can have up to two (2) characters if you can handle them! However, THEY MUST BE BALANCED!
• Characters will all be 20+ years old (yes I have increased the age in which girls debut in society)

• Realistic face claims are required. I will know if you are using Ai so don't even try

• Realistic face claims are required. I will know if you are using Ai so don't even try
• This is a casual-lit roleplay so I am expecting three-paragraph in-character posts
• Please keep characters balanced. Too many female characters will result in me personally balancing it out by not accepting some!
• Be kind to everyone. Any harassment or bullying will not be tolerated. Please inform me if anything like this occurs.
• All of RPN's rules apply
-----
Courtship.

This Season's Ladies.

Welcome to 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬!
Making the journey to London to experience such an exciting time of year is certainly the highlight of many young ladies' and gentlmen's lives.
• No perfect characters! They will not get in!
