Futuristic SPACE OPERA -- Beyond the Wormhole! (reboot) (forum and discord!)

is genetic manipulation a developed science capable of safely altering genetic data in the Federation?

The technology exists, usually to allow different species to have offspring or for eugenical purposes. Weaponized Genetic manipulation has been banned on many worlds.

elerian1.jpg
The Elerians are (With little exception) a feudal matriarchy of honorable and (formerly) xenophobic warriors who demand total respect from the inferior races of the galaxy. Enchanting and ethereal, the Elerians do not consider other races to be their peers. Obsessed with purity of Elerian culture, they have historically maintained a cold distance from the rest of the universe. Beneath their beautiful exteriors and distant ways, they hide the hot blooded ways of a feudal warrior race with no sympathies for other societies. The women are a telekinetic warrior race, with a small group of male telepathic philosophers who can see into the minds and hearts of others on a limited basis. The Elerians devote themselves to strict (and sometimes unique) codes of conduct. Those who do not respect the firm boundaries of the Elerians will face a mighty retribution.

Woefully standoffish and warlike, it was only until the advent of the Ur-Quan war (when the Ur-quan and Khor-Ah enslaved or exterminated most alliance races) that The Elerians joined the Galactic alliance and put aside their ancient bigotries and xenophobia. Still cold and elitist, Diplomacy (and Seduction) of the Elerians by the Syreen led to them becoming a vital weapon in the resistance war against the Ur-Quan.

Elerian Psionics take on numerous disciplines, with the most famous being mind control, Cryo and Pyromanipulation, to altering physical structures and telekinesis.

I'd like some info about Hiver(these remember Florans) and Nimbuloid

Hiver.jpg
Hivers are a unique species with few species bearing any real commonalities with Hivers, either in mindset, physiology, or otherwise. In a universe where humanoids seem to predominate, they are non-humanoids. In a universe that favors the violent and selfish, Hivers are altruists and seek to elevate life. In a world of intense competition and deadly contests of survival, the Hivers build vast, peaceful communities and make friends where enemies once existed.

Descended from omnivore gatherer/scavenger stock, they are one of the most alien of the major races. Hivers evolved from troglobytic (cave-dwelling) creatures who developed mutualistic relationships with other cave-dwellers.

Hivers average 1.5 meters from ground to top of upraised head and weigh about 150 kg. Hivers exhibit a modified six-fold radial symmetry; the body has a calcareous internal skeleton consisting of a series of rings supporting the limbs and a fused carapace protecting the brain and internal organs.

The head is a modification of one of the limbs and contains six eyestalks and six manipulative tentacles, plus paired infrared sensor organs. The other five limbs are identical (except for slight modifications of the hand opposite the head) and are used as arms and legs indiscriminately. Each limb ends in a six-fingered radial hand. Fingers are very flexible and have muscular suction cups on the lower surface about halfway to the tips. Hiver arms and hands are generally weaker than a human's but are very tough and difficult to injure.

The mouth or cloaca (digestive and defaeative opening) is on the lower surface of the body.

Hivers are not an overly aggressive race and are non-confrontational.

  • At the same time, they are hyper-social, very gregarious, and keen hagglers and gamblers.
  • Hiver personalities tend to be very flexible, a condition known as socio-plasticity.
  • In other words, a Hiver has no problem telling you exactly what it thinks you want to hear.
  • Extremely few Hivers are malicious and most exhibit altruism for all forms of life, exhibited in the Hive Federation's focus on developing an interstellar community and raising other species to higher levels of civilization.
  • Hiver relations are motivated by a strange combination of species loyalty and intra-species competition through the art of manipulation.
  • Being lifelong, inveterate "manipulators", Hivers tend to think very fast on their "feet" with many exhibiting mathematical savantism.
  • Hivers are endlessly curious and can rarely resist a good mystery.
As with every other aspect of Hiver life, they are practically endlessly diverse. Hivers not only believe in a myriad of different ideas, but those same differences in ideas only bring Hivers closer together, while other species might be drawn apart or balkanized. Hivers love the spice of life and truly embrace multi-culturism to a degree no one else could imagine. Hivers also take great glee in trying out the belief systems of other species. They form clubs about those religions and beliefs, and experiment and explore those dogmas. Some sophont species have been offended at this appropriation of their beliefs, while others have learned something new. However other sophont species felt, the Hivers fully embraced and enjoyed what they were doing.

Nimbuloid.jpg

The Nimbuloids arose on a planet with a thick, reactive atmosphere. They are composed entirely of dense, cohesive gases and move through the atmosphere by chemically attracting and repelling the molecules of the gases in their environment. They see reality in terms of the intersecting flow of what they call currents: the karmic forces that, they believe, determine destiny.

With great effort, a Nimbuloid can transform matter from solidity to a greatly expanded gaseous state and back. They are able to herd around clumps of transformed matter and cause the clumps to coalesce into arbitrary shapes. When a skilled Nimbuloid expends the needed energy, it can shape large, intricate structures with awesome speed.

Ooh... Very interested! Would you happen to have some background info on the Syreen race already?

syreen.jpg

The syreen are a race of typically classically attractive empaths and pheromonal manipulators that developed in ways very much parallel to humans except rather than an early history fraught with conflict syreen instead coalesced into a world-spanning agrarian society. Syreen can synthesize chemically the phermones for love, passion, and hate not just other syreen but in most known alien species.

Relatively few in population and scattered throughout the galaxy, this is due to a catastrophe destroying their homeworld shortly after developing orbital habitats from which the whole population currently descends from. During the Ur-Quan Slave War the Syreen were without a homeworld and basically adrift in space looking for a new home until the Ur-quan captured them, imprisoning them (quite happily one might add) on a planet they called Paradiso. What the Syreen were unable to find in decades of searching, their Ur-quan masters were able to give to them in hours. This made them notably neutral in the Ur-Quan war and refused to join the galactic resistance.

Put Simply, Syreen are Gorgeous -- and they use their mental and phermone powers to manipulate, motivate, rally or even obsess/enslave other races.

Interestingly enough, Humans and Syreen found their species able to reproduce together easily even with little genetic modification -- and since this discovery their population has been bouncing back soundly throughout known space. It is not known why Syreen and Humans are so genetically and psychologically similar, but some suspect this is a result of one or both races being subject to genetic tinkering by the "greys." It is also speculated they have common genetic ancestry with the Elerians (with whom the Elerians notably get along with the Syreen) though research on this has been far harder to prove, most content to assume this camaraderie has more to do with both being matriarchal societies.

Syreen martial arts and military technique have almost a sense of theater about them, with archetypes, roles or plays/performances being part of standard fighting doctrines.

May I have some information on the Psilon such as history, appearance, and abilities?

Psilon.png

The Psilon are an intellectual race who value knowledge above all else. The Psilon priority on research and education has been so internalized that it is at the core of their physical evolution – they gradually changed over time into the physically weak beings that they are today. They dedicate their entire lives to research and focus their energy on their work, often blinding themselves to the world around them. They are critical thinkers and not prone to uncontrolled bursts of emotion. They have excellent manners and speak in relaxed tones. However, many have difficulty with the intricacies of nonverbal communication, so the Psilons are (as perceived by others) a somewhat awkward race. Psilons take aptitude tests very early in their development stage that determines what their primary studies will be in life (results come in the form of suggested research specializations). Excellent engineering in Psilon society renders many menial jobs obsolete and delegated to robotic systems. Psilons operate a dictatorship style government called the Quanta, which is ruled over by the Controller. The Controller’s main duty is to manage intergalactic relations and oversee the allocation of government funds to various research facilities. Top researchers often consult with the Controller on domestic issues. As an exceptionally peaceful and non-confrontational race, the Psilon do not have internal conflict and do not challenge the authority of the Controller. They hide behind their technology in war and will wait to strike until they are positive that they have the technological upper hand. A team of risk analysts serve the Controller to establish the measure of their advantage and minimize risks to Psilon assets.

So can a nembuloid build a vessel to himself?

"with great effort" and "expending the needed energy" -- the nimbuloid would also need a source of material and the necessary skill. So In simplest terms, yes. In game terms, such a power would be balanced so as not to become too overpowered. So products would be subject to rolls for progress over time, would be limited in size to smaller craft (at least at first) and it would of course require the necessary materials to build a vessel -- It could however repair existing tech is was familiar with or make smaller vessels/vehicles.

So make a new ship entirely out of gasses? Theoretically possible... but in the confines of the game your powers would start with small arms and fighters/vehicles/drones, you would require a working model to duplicate (or more easily repair) or familiarity with said material.

In short, yes. However, I wouldn't let the presence of a Nimbuloid in the party to "break the game"

Syreen martial arts and military technique have almost a sense of theater about them, with archetypes, roles or plays/performances being part of standard fighting doctrines.
It might be fun to discuss Shakespeare with one of these guys. That is of course if he even existed in this timeline?

I thought so, but I don't think that a gas sack, somewhat robotic and humanoid body would break the game. Another question I have is, they have some kind of feeding process? Osmosis-like Electron/ion based feeding?
I mean, they envelope the target and drain its energy?
They get bigger if fed too much?
How they reproduce? By mitosis? By sprouting?
They can be cannibals?
They can compress themselves to fit inside something?

I was just concerned about Nimbuloids building their own ships from the get-go -- but personal sacs (or even vaccum suits for comrades) or a humanoid body to seem less alien are totally cool.

Their feeding process is absorbing solid or gaseous matter and converting some of it to fuel, leaving a gross, tacky, semi-solid paste.

Nimuloids grow over time and if sufficient nutrients permit. They can shrink or grow in size considerably relative to ambient gravity or other forces (They tend to contract in environments of higher wind or gravity and can considerably expand in the absence of such forces.

They reproduce sexually, but are very private about how exactly this process works -- it is known that it involves "unfication" into one Nimbuloid, "Bifurcation" back into two pregnant nimbuloids, and relatively soon after each parent produces a "Bud" that separates from the parent masses. Nimbulous are equal parts embarrassed and excited about the particulars of the process. Th

They are able to squeeze into or through any aperture that is not "air-tight"

In the early ages of Nimbuloid history, Cannibalism was quite common. It has since become very much taboo with it no longer being a survival necessity.

Trilarian.jpg
Trilarians originated as an aquatic species but have evolved to survive in most environments within a comfortable temperature range. Trilarians have prophetic dreams which over their long history gave them tremendous stores of information and curbed the urge seized by many other species to explore. It is said by Xenohistorians that Trilarians are both one of the most ancient races in the galaxy, but also one of the newest to space travel.... the necessity simply wasn't there to explore the stars when the species as a whole could interpret with relative accuracy everything they cared to know by taking a nap.

It is also posited by some scientists that Trilarians are not originating from this dimension and in fact were sent to invade, found no other (obvious) races to encounter, and instead defected to dreaming and having a good time, "hanging up" on their old masters and spending the next few millennia laughing about it.

Any subject, any question, any matter, an elerian has a chance to know about it, and may indeed (even sometimes to their own surprise) be an expert. (in game terms this is subject to die rolls, if a trilarian meditates or sleeps on the subject. or even just seeing if they can pull facts from the top of their heads)

As subject to so much information from across the cosmos, each and every Elerian develops their own culture, borrowed from everything they care to expose themselves to -- some are acetic, some warlike, some profoundly peaceful.

darlok.jpg
Darloks were enemies of all other races with the notable exception of the Humans. This occurred because they were a treacherous (some say evil) race of shape-shifting spies. The Darlok skill at developing new computers aided their already deadly spying abilities. Darlok leaders were aggressive, but would try to buy time by signing treaties, waiting until their enemies were off guard to strike. Some people have noticed that these creatures resemble hooded wraiths.

The reputation of the Darlok race grew somewhat better over time; no longer were they considered the galaxy's ultimate enemy. That title belonged to the was taken by the Ur-Quan during the slave wars, where darloks bravely and selflessly distinguished themselves coordinating the "Alliance of free Stars" communication between species and proving themselves indispensable, and bravely expendable, maintaining organization of the war efforts. Darloks seemed to have changed in appearance as well, although with shapeshifters you never really know. Not only were they still the best spies, but most members of the species are practitioners (or masters) of a deadly racial martial art called "The Lok" which they have developed over their entire civilized history -- focusing on stealth, sabotage, and deadly silent combat.

Only The Elerian galaxy-watchers could track the Darlok with any degree of certainty.

Ungooma.jpg

The Ungooma are a species of adaptive-intelligence beings that evolved as thought-parasites and later developed their own means of thinking (as a means of generating their own food!) Before they became sapient they would take control of the higher animals on their world, using the bodies and minds of their hosts for their own needs.

They are tiny, and their intellect is derived from the combined thought impulses of large numbers of Ungooma. There can be up to Billions of Ungooma and their combined thoughts form many thousands of distinct composite personalities in each ungooma "colony" making up their own distinct "person."

Ungooma colonies have historically "infested" non-sentient animals as a means of moving their colonies around, and are generally uncomfrotable with a paraylzed and screaming internal consciousness they are subjected to from "body-snatching" -- Space cows and other large innocuous animals are their favored hosts... though it can be disturbing to see a cow pilot a space ship or demand you lower your weapons.

Ungooma, like so many other species now friends of the galactic alliance and subsequent splinter federations, were first encountered as a threat -- small colonies of Ungooma, unable to think for themselves is sufficient number (and hungry for sustenance sentients provided) Lead to great stress and misunderstandings as the Ungooma orginally tried to absorb the Galactic Alliance from within.Once they were discovered and a "Cure" was found for them, they have since been model citizens and great contributors to organized space societies everywhere.

Hanshak.jpg

The Hanshaks are an ancient race of toroidal mind-bodies. They are deeply in tune with life and nature, and can communicate telepathically with other sentient life. The Hanshaks are few, but they are renowned for their wisdom and intuition.

After an early technological surge, they dismantled their cities and returned their world to its natural state, developing a culture devoted to enlightenment and living symbiotically with nature. They have managed to retain a knowledge of technology in their druidic society.

With the Advent of the Ur-Quan Slave War, the Hanshaks were bound to their homeworld without minding or even rally noticing. When the Ur-Quan Slave war ended they were invited into the Alliance of Free stars and many joined their new friends among the stars.

Govorom.jpg

he Govorom evolved on a barren desert planet. In order to survive, they learned to preserve and nurture the scant resources of their world. They do not have an organized society; they live apart from each other, each being a caretaker of a small region of the planet. The regions they care for are ever-changing and are not agreed upon but handled purely by intuition — each Govorom knows instinctively where its region lies.

Their powers grew over time until much of their planet teemed with life. Given an already-hospitable planet, they are able to transform it into a paradise.

Govorom have local "terraforming" ability that can effect temperature and ambient environment in a way it wishes. It can make dust into soil, and weeds into fruit.

Honestly really tempted to play a lion-man Security Chief and be Best Battle Dad. Like late-series Worf from TNG

Fludentri.jpg

The Fludentri evolved on a world covered with ocean. They are composed of polymerized liquid. When a Fludentri is injured it regenerates quickly, its fluid anatomy knitting together after physical damage occurs. A Fludentri dies when its entire body is disrupted at once, or specific types of weaponry that harm them best. (Microwave weapons and disintigrators, for example)

The Fludentri are able to make their bodies assume varying degrees of solidity. They can wrap their tendrils quickly around prey and tighten them with ferocious strength. They see combat as a fine art, and a Fludentri is deeply moved by a finely-improvised combat performance between skilled and creative warriors.

They are generally very direct as a species and not known for their talents of abstract thought, and they prefer to let their bravery in action speak for them. A Fludentri's status and cultural power is determined by its skill in combat.
