I'm not used to friendly fighting. I'm used to more gory, killing and real fighting action so its new to me.

Staff will be lenient on what qualifies as deadly force. You can swing a sword at someone without it being deadly as long as you're not swinging hard enough to actually slice through them if you should hit. Same applies with most other bladed things. Ranged weapons in Soul Eater work differently so that the sole energy within the projectile can be controlled so as not to be deadly.
