Lore
Prologue
Eight hundred years ago, the world was protected by Eight Warlords - a group of god-like entities - to preserve the world order. Led by the God of Death himself, they fought against the forces of evil. However, the group faced the betrayal of the God of Death's own apprentice, who became a Kishin and wreaked havoc on the world with his power. After this Kishin was sealed away by his own master, the Warlords disbanded for various reasons. In the wake left by the Warlords came the organization known as Death Weapon Meister Academy (also known as the acronym "D.W.M.A"). Students within the school, classified as either Meisters or Demon Weapons, are educated and supervised at a young age to prevent the uprising of another Kishin while upholding the responsibility of fighting against the forces of evil. While students in the NOT Class curriculum aspire to learn to control their powers of their weapon transformation or seek out other opportunities, the EAT Class curriculum are the elite that protect the world from evil.
Death Weapon Meister Academy
DWMA (死武専, Shibusen), also known as Death Weapon Meister Academy, is both a school and powerful organization founded by Death on April 2. While both are referred to as the DWMA as a whole, they function on entirely different levels. The DWMA is an organization that functions worldwide with various branches, including: Oceania, Africa, South America, East Asia and West Asia. The school is found in the central base of operations found in Death City, Nevada. Potential students come from across the world to be educated in either the NOT or EAT class curriculum. Some go on to lead successful careers while others join the DWMA military, creating one of the most unique sets of alumni in the world. Because of its global influence and the fact it is overseen directly by a God of Death, the DWMA is also one of the most powerful established organizations in the world.
History
- Work with Eibon
Prior to the time of the Eight Warlords, Lord Death worked closely with the sorcerer Eibon. Together, Death and Eibon were able to begin the creation of Demon Tools along with blueprints for a new power which they hoped would be able to counter the growing threat of witches. However, after much research, it became clear their project - the creation of demon weapons - was inhumane because it would require the sacrifice of a witch’s soul.
- Creating Demon Weapons
Unknown to Lord Death or Eibon at the time, a young witch named Arachne was watching them with great interest. She stole the blueprints created by Death and lured the Shinigami to Lost Island. He intended to hide BREW on the island and she intended to blow up the island while Lord Death was still there. Neither party succeeded in achieving their goal. Although the island blew up, Lord Death managed to escape, resolving to find a more suitable hiding place for the Demon Tool. Despite her failure to eliminate Lord Death, Arachne succeeded in creating Demon Weapons based on the blueprints she stole from Lord Death. Even with her success, she could not evade the Shinigami forever. Arachne was eventually tracked down by Lord Death in Loew Village where she was finally defeated, her soul torn for all eternity.
- Amon and the Eight Warlords
Near the time of Demon Weapon creation, the Eight Warlords came to exist. It was in this time that Lord Death, one of the Eight Warlords, split off his own madness, creating an entirely new being who came to be his son Asura. The Eight Warlords made it their mission to hunt down those that had started along the path of evil, witches and humans alike. Eventually, the Eight Warlords entered into a conflict with the witches of the west. The warlords were sent to investigate only to learn when they arrived that Asura, the son of Lord Death, had taken all of them out on his own.
- The Birth of the Kishin
Asura had been forcing his weapon partner to consume human souls. Then, consumed by the madness of fear, Asura consumed his own weapon partner and became a kishin. An intense battle ensued between Lord Death and the embodiment of his own fear and madness in which Lord Death emerged victorious. Unable to kill Asura while also aware of the potential danger of spreading madness, Asura was sealed away. Locking his soul in place to keep the kishin from escaping, Lord Death eternally bound himself to Death City.
- Founding the DWMA
On April 2nd, Death Weapon Meister Academy was founded. Although many purposes were in mind, it is primarily a school to train both weapons and meisters. Its goal was to ensure that all weapons knew how to use their weapon transformations and to also educate meisters in their unique abilities. By training weapons and meisters, Lord Death was able to give them the abilities they would need to ensure that no kishin was ever again born into the world.
- War on Witchcraft
Since their founding, the DWMA has entered into a conflict with witches. The witches have constantly been developing new spells to counter the movements of the academy, and the DWMA is always teaching their weapons and meisters new ways to counter the actions of witches.
- Star Clan Extermination
In quite recent history, an organization known as the Star Clan rose up. It was a family of meisters known for their skills in assassination techniques. A branch of the well-known Hoshi family, the Star Clan had become violent and power hungry. The situation intensified to such a degree that they were hunting and consuming human souls. The DWMA had to intervene and the entire Star Clan was wiped out. The Hoshi family, the main branch, still remains.
The Academy
Death Weapon Meister Academy (DWMA) was founded by Lord Death - the God of Death. Upon its founding, there was a single purpose in mind: prevent the return of the kishin - a being whose madness wavelength could plunge the world into an era of chaos. In an effort to fulfill this goal, the DWMA acts both as an academy to train young weapons and meisters so that they are able to help prevent the rise of the kishin, and as a military organization able to act in times of need. Specifically as a military power, the DWMA is able to take actions that may not always directly pertain to its established purpose. The organization has branches all across the world and has been known to offer aid in issues not related to the supernatural. However, its actions beyond the walls of the school also earn it a reputation that may not always be helpful. There are cities that denounce Lord Death and label anything he is related to as evil. As a school, the DWMA accepts the responsibility of training both demon weapons and meisters in their unique abilities. It achieves this goal through the establishment of two different curricula: Exceptionally Advanced Talent (EAT) and Normally Overcome Target (NOT).
Exceptionally Advanced Talent:
These are students who show great promise as agents of the DWMA and are able to take action within the military side of the academy. Classes focus on general academia as well as providing them with the skills and knowledge necessary to prevent the rise or rebirth of a kishin. Furthermore, EAT students are divided into three ranks.
- One Star Students
- Canon Examples: Maka Albarn, Black Star, Death the Kid
- Typical Skill Level: It is actually not uncommon for students within the 1-Star rank to possess abilities outside of anything that might simply be a given for the character. Within the anime, Maka Albarn possessed a highly developed soul perception, Black Star was able to strike people with his soul wavelength directly and Death the Kid was able to wield two weapons at one time. It was also shown that 1-Star pairs are capable of Soul Resonance although some of the higher skills (i.e. Witch Hunter) may not always have succeeded or been effective. Taking the examples into consideration, 1-Star characters within this rp are able to have a wide range of abilities and the ability to resonate with a compatible soul wavelength is presumed to be possible. That being said, not everyone is equally compatible with all other characters and there will be times where two characters cannot resonate.
- Two Star Students
- Canon Examples: Maka, Black Star and Death the Kid at the conclusion of the anime
- Typical Skill Level: Seeing as there are no examples provided for the typical skill level of a 2-Star student is something that will have to be obtained through a comparison of 1-Star and 3-Star characters. Some of the most obvious differences that we see from examples in the anime include an expansion and growth of abilities along with a stronger bond between partners. Similarly, some 3-Star meisters show more flexibility with their soul wavelengths. These comparisons lead to the presumption that there is much development with 2-Star students. Their ability to work in teams grows and they are learning abilities beyond the ones that may have come easily to them.
- Three Star Students:
- Canon Examples: Dr. Franken Stein, Sid the Zombie
- Typical Skill Level: For a student to achieve the rank of 3-Star while they are still progressing through classes is highly rare. All the examples provided within the sources of lore are members of the DWMA staff. They typically have reached a point of specialization and have certain aspects of combat mastered. There are very few things beyond the abilities of at 3-Star student. Chances are, if there is something they don't know, it is because they haven't been taught it or because they have specifically chosen not to learn it.
Normally Overcome Target:
This curriculum is a non-combat class that follows a similar track to that of a normal school with no supernatural influences. Students are labeled as freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors and they take classes like science, history, social studies, and gym. There are two classes designed specifically for meisters or weapons and gym tends to be a lot more focused on physical development which leads it to be fairly intense.
Death City
Death City (デス・シティー Desu Shittii), also referred to as Death Vegas (デス・ベガス Desu Begasu), is located in the state of Nevada, within the United States. It houses many popular locations including Death Weapon Meister Academy itself. From a distance, the city appears to be entirely gloomy; the buildings look like plain black and white buildings roofed in red while the city itself looks like it popped out of the desert. In reality, the city is decorated with architecture fitting of it's title. Cobblestone streets weave and wind their way through the layout and offer a tour that displays the name of the city in the form of a Shinigami mask.
Locations
- Death Weapon Meister Academy
Located in almost the exact center of Death City, the DWMA is an academy run by the Shinigami, Lord Death, himself. It is a facility built for the training of meisters and weapons.
- The Death Room
This is the room where Lord Death, the headmaster of the DWMA, is most frequently found. It is within this room that he holds meetings with staff members and sometimes with students. The room contains a single mirror and Lord Death sometimes inhabits the mirror.- The Library
This expansive room is at least three floors tall and contains copious amounts of books. Some of the books are only available to students with specific ranks.- Classrooms
Typically resembling large lecture halls, the classrooms within the DWMA have a desk in front for the teacher while students sit on raised rows of conjoined desks.- Dispensary
This is basically an infirmary. The school nurse can be found here and this is where sick and/or injured students are treated. There are several hospital beds, an examination table, and a medication storage room.- Running Track
This is a basic track and field track used for physical education classes along with the annual physical exam.- Dojo
This is an area designated for physical sparring matches.- Dance Studio
Although the name would imply that the room is used for dancing, that is actually not it’s most frequent purpose. More often, this room is used as a place for new students to work on basic combat skills with their partner as well as improve their ability to meld with their partner.- Cafeteria
This, as its name implies, is where students are able to get meals during the day. There is a wide array of options available with students being able to get food from all across the world.
- Hook Cemetery
The local cemetery is located on the outskirts of Death City itself.
- Death Robbins
This is a popular ice cream parlor within Death City.
- Basketball Court
This is an area surrounded by trees with a few benches. It can be a spot for DWMA students to take a break from school or enjoy in their free time.
- Swimming Pool
This is a typical swimming pool featuring diving boards, shallow ends, and deep ends. It also contains a storage room and a locker room for visitors to change and store their belongings.
Meisters
Meisters (職人, Shokunin) are individuals who fight while wielding Demon Weapons. Typically, they are individuals with exceptional wavelengths and their wavelengths need to be compatible with the wavelength of their weapon partner in order for the partnership to be successful. Meisters can be a variety of individuals from Shinigami to zombies, although demon weapons cannot be meisters (with the exception of Bond Meisters). One general commonality among all meisters is physical fitness. Meisters are also able to communicate spiritually with their partners. This communication can expand to allow a transfer of energy between the weapon and the meister.
Types of Meisters
- Weapon Based Meister
Most meisters are defined by the type of weapon that they use, rather than being labeled another type of meister since once a weapon and meister work together for a significant amount of time, it is rare that they will ever work with another partner in their lifetime.
- Death Weapon Meister
This is a meister with the experience and strength necessary to create a death scythe. They often wield death scythes in combat and if they haven't created one already, they are at minimum more than capable of doing so at any given time.
- Utility Meister
A utility meister is able to meld their soul wavelength with multiple different types of weapon wavelengths meaning it is possible for them to work with multiple different partners. Most meisters trained at the DWMA are utility meisters.
- Type 1 Utility Meister: able to resonate with two different weapons simultaneously
- Type 2 Utility Meister: able to resonate with two or more different weapons
- Assassination Meister
An assassination meister is a meister skilled in the art of assassination.
- Bond Meister
An individual is a bond meister if they are wielding a weapon they are biologically related to. There are a few advantages to being a bond meister.
- A bond meister does not have to have a compatible wavelength with their weapon.
- A bond meister can also be a demon weapon.
- Despite its positive aspects, being a bond meister comes with one major downside. Everything done by a bond meister is weaker than it would otherwise be in a normal partnership.
Abilities
- Soul Resonance
This is an ability that requires both a weapon and a meister. The weapon, being wielded by the meister, amplifies the wavelengths of the meister and the two of them send wavelengths back and forth to create a stronger and stronger attack. Some characters may have unique abilities while in resonance and some may have more than one. Resonance is a presumed ability of all EAT students although the effectiveness does increase with rank.
- Soul Force
This ability is limited to meisters and allows them to attack an opponent with their soul wavelength directly without the use of a weapon to amplify the strength of the wavelength. It may be possessed by anyone regardless of rank.
- Soul Menace
This is a stronger version of soul force. This ability, also limited to meisters, specifically allows the user to generate an electric-like attack that is even able to harm weapons while the weapons are in weapon form. This is an extension of Soul Force.
- Focal Soul Force
This ability allows the user to project a soul force-like attack from any point on their body.
- Soul Armor
The user is able to harden their skin into a sort of armor by manipulating their soul wavelength.
- Soul Speed
The user concentrates soul force in their feet allowing them to move at extreme speeds.
- Soul Projection
The user projects out a force from their soul wavelength creating an instantaneous yet extremely temporary shield. It lasts for only about a second, but is solid enough to stop almost anything in its path. The user has to be very precise with timing or it might not last to stop things, though.
- Soul Disruption
Basically, this ability is a soul EMP of sorts. It deactivates all soul abilities around them in a certain radius. Unfortunately, it also deactivates the user’s own soul abilities.
- Sutures
Originally demonstrated by Dr. Franken Stein in canon, this ability is tiny threads of precise wavelength control that can be used to paralyze or heal depending on the user’s intentions. Using for paralytic purposes requires intense concentration from both the meister and the weapon partner and it could not be done by a solo meister. It’s too intense for that.
- Soul Perception
This ability grants the student the ability to see a person's soul. Not everyone's level of soul perception is the same. Some people have a longer range than others, some see more details in the soul than others. Most meisters have this ability to some degree or another and they may or may not choose to grow it stronger. This ability is also available to weapons.
Demon Weapons
Demon Weapons (魔武器, Mabuki), also called Magic Weapons, are a race with the ability to transform into a weapon. These individuals can take on a human form and a weapon form, and they are also able to achieve partial transformations into their weapon form. While in their weapon form, demon weapons are practically invincible. They can feel the force of blows and may even bleed within their spiritual dimension, but they are protected. The ability to transform into a weapon is a genetic trait that can be visibly passed down through families, although it can also lie dormant within families for years before surfacing. Not all weapon genes are dominant traits.
Types of Weapons
- Multi-Form Weapon
A multi-form weapon is a weapon with the ability to take on several different weapon forms. This ability is limited to families who are directly descended from the original weapons created by Farrah and this ability is not always possessed by everyone within a given family. It is often passed down to the firstborn child although even in this instance, the firstborn child may not always inherit all the weapon forms of their family. The number of forms that are passed down within a family are limited and each form may only be passed down once per generation.(Note: Due to rarity and logistics, these weapons are not allowed in the roleplay.)
- Autonomous Weapon
This is an extremely skilled weapon able to fight unrestricted despite not having a meister. Typically, these are weapons that do not necessarily have a traditional form and thus are difficult for a meister to wield. Due to their lack of a meister, these weapons also fail to meet their full potential.
- Dark Weapon
This is a general term used to refer to weapons that have started consuming human souls. If the process is allowed to continue, these weapons will eventually become demon swords and after that, fully realized Kishin.
- Demon Sword
A demon sword is developed by overhunting human souls. Their power is on par with that of a Death Scythe and they are additionally just as durable as their death weapon counterparts. A demon sword is only one step away from becoming a kishin.
- Death Weapon
A weapon becomes a death weapon after consuming 99 kishin egg souls and one witch's soul. They are capable of being wielded by Lord Death himself.
- Black Blood
Usually a substance injected into an individual, this blood is highly weaponizable. It is able to create a defense for the person it is sealed inside and also creates a certain susceptibility to madness.
Witches
Witches (魔女, Majo) are female, destruction-prone beings capable of manipulating magic. The appearance of a witch varies, though they generally look like human females. However, some witches can have an appearance based on distinct, animal-like qualities of their animal theme.[5]
The soul of a witch is usually purple, and is shaped like a human soul. However, witches like Shaula Gorgon may show that this isn't always the case. The Soul Wavelength of a witch is also distinguishable, though this cannot be physically seen.
Types of Witches
- Necromancer
This is a witch who specializes in reviving the dead as mummies or evil spirits.
- Tanuki Witch
Tanuki Witches are Witches whose themes are tanukis, Japanese raccoon dogs. Tanuki are known to be "Masters of Regeneration" and as such, Tanuki Witches are users of Regeneration Magic. These Witches are looked down upon by the Witch Order due to lacking the Pull of Magic.
- High Level Witch
These are powerful witches who are recognized as “advanced and are capable of contending with other, high caliber opponents.
- Short-Range Witch
These witches are capable of fighting in close combat.
The Witch Order
The Witch Order is split into two groups: younger Witches and older Witches.
The elder Witches of the Order have less liberal mindsets. These Witches hold a more uptight attitude, harboring deep hatred for Death Weapon Meister Academy as well as even controlling younger Witches with rules which are viewed as "outdated". They tend to have a more stubborn attitude. One older Witch even went as far as to say the hatred between these Witches and DWMA run "deeper than the deepest pits of hell". Younger Witches, however, hold a more liberal view and aren't clinging to the "web of hatred", unlike their elders. As a result, they are more open to DWMA and hate them less, although they face scrutiny from older members due to their conflicting views.
Casually, younger Witches have adopted their own slang and also have their own vulgar sayings. The usage of "witching" and "witchin" is much like the humane usage of words like "wicked" and "fricking". "Bullwitch" is a vulgar term used much like "bullshit" within the human, English language.
Witches, both old and young, take immense pride in their destructive instinct that dominates them, known as the Pull of Magic. This instinct is held proud and in high regard, so much so that individuals who lack the instinct (like Tanuki Witches who possess Regeneration Magic) are alienated from the Order and aren't considered "real Witches".
Much like the DWMA, the Witch Order exists to establish order and rules for the Witches to prevent potential extinction at the hands of enemies such as the Kishin and the DWMA. Like societies established by humans, the Witch Order also hold their own punishments and court trials.[16] These punishments range from serving prison time[17] to excommunication.[18] Some rules include:
- After the resurrection of the Kishin by Medusa Gorgon, it became strictly forbidden for Witches to approach the DWMA for any reason.
- Witches within the order are not allowed to side with the DWMA or befriend Death Scythes.
- It's a crime to assist and/or affiliate with Witch Order criminals.
- Killing witches within the order is also forbidden.
- Should a dispute happen between Witches concerning opening a portal to the Witches' Realm, the youngest witch must be the one to open a portal.
- Witches aren’t supposed to use their own magic in caring fashions such as to heal sicknesses or anything considered ordinary.
Souls
Souls are invisible to the naked eye. To individuals with soul perception, they are visible. Each individual’s soul may take on the appearance that matches their personality traits and the appearance may alter depending on certain abilities that may or may not be in use. Every living being has a soul. The wavelength, therefore, is often described as the rhythm, or sound, of one's soul. It is through matching wavelengths that a weapon and a meister gain their power, their ability to communicate, and their strong sense of each other.
Wavelength Types
*Note: specialized wavelengths are impossible to learn. One must be born with a specialized wavelength and they may only have one.
- Anti-Demon Wavelength
An anti-demon wavelength is a useful trait to have. This wavelength naturally drives away evil. It can allow the user to repel evil beings and it can also grant the user the ability to pull people from madness.
- Anti-Magic Wavelength
An anti-magic wavelength is a wavelength that repels and extinguishes magic. The magic affected by this wavelength does not necessarily have to be from an evil or demonic source; the outcome is the same regardless of the source.
- Numbing Wavelength: Individuals with this wavelength are more numb to certain sensations such as pain or discomfort and therefore tend to push themselves more in combat. This can come with complications, though. If they are unaware of an injury, then it’s likely to get worse before actually getting treatment.
- Parasitic Wavelength: Individuals who possess a parasitic wavelength are able to steal soul energy from others upon contact. This means that direct soul attacks do less damage because their soul actually absorbs some of the attack and converts it into power.
- Healing Wavelength
The user is able to use their wavelength to heal the souls of others. The healing can pass through physical attacks, through physical contact, and through resonance.
- Survivor’s Wavelength
The soul of a survivor is unique in that the wavelength grows in power as the difficulty of surviving becomes harder. The more damage they withstand, the stronger the wavelength. Of course, there is always a limit to how much damage the human body can withstand before it no longer functions.
Soul Types
- Grigori Soul
These souls are almost literally angel souls and the soul itself will appear to have wings. Furthermore, the user can actually manifest those wings in rare situations.
- Kishin Egg Soul
Individuals with a kishin egg soul have strayed from the path of humanity and are now instead on the path to becoming a kishin.
- Earth Shaman Soul
This kind of soul can be found in individuals with a unique connection to the earth itself. Due to that strong connection to the earth, these individuals are able to communicate with the earth and even find secret passages. Earth Shaman souls also have hidden abilities that can be awakened by directing magic into them.
- Strong Soul
A strong soul is a human soul that is equivalent in strength to that of 99 souls. Their wavelength possesses phenomenal power, especially if they are able to channel it.
- Monster Cat Soul
A monster cat, also known as a magic cat or a cat witch, has both a cat form and a human form although their human form may retain some cat-like features (such as cat ears). Monster cats are also able to use magic and they possess 9 souls. Their souls are similar in appearance to the souls of witches.
- Witch Soul
Powerful female beings capable of using magic to very extensive degrees, these beings are often declared to be in opposition of the DWMA as a whole. Witches generally have an animal that they are similar to and their spells require chants of various sorts. In addition to that, their ability to use magic makes them susceptible to the Pull of Magic which draws them towards more destructive tendencies.
- Shinigami Soul
This is strictly the soul belonging to a grim reaper.
- Werewolf Soul
Belonging to a race of beings with the ability to transform into humanoid wolves, these beings are often mistaken for demons. Along with their ability to take on two forms, they have enhanced senses and while in wolf form, they have stronger physical abilities.
- Bloodsucker Soul
Bloodsuckers possess monster souls and their souls are similar in appearance to those of witches. They also possess the ability to siphon blood from another individual and use that blood to expand their own power. Bloodsuckers have also demonstrated some capabilities with magic.
- Sorcerer’s Soul
Sorcerers are the male counterparts to witches and are able to use powerful magic in their own right. The main difference, aside from sex, is that a sorcerer's magic tends to be more bounded by science and knowledge. While most sorcerers are immune to the pull of magic due to their vast knowledge, there exists a small subset of Warlocks, who like their witch counterparts, succumb to it.
- Clown Soul
A clown is a physical being made completely and entirely of madness. Because of this, their soul tends to mimic that of the being emitting the madness wavelength that created them.
