Solar learning Quicksilver hand of dreams.

Thematically, it doesn't sit in my head well. I don't like the idea that a being of chaos that lives and forms itself after human dreams can learn the spiritual principles of Martial Arts. Had I been writing that book, I'd have given them their own style, which was not truly a martial art but a facsimile, and I'd have said "That's it for you". At the very least, I'd have allowed them to learn martial arts, but included a little flavour text saying that it was all a sham, and that they couldn't learn real Martial Arts anymore than a first circle demon could.


But maybe that's just me...


Anyways, I certainly wouldn't let one learn Quicksilver Hand, and strangely I think that it wouldn't fit the Fae anyway: what happens to a dream that is forgotten by the world?
 
I don't think that the style is overpowered, at least when compared to other SMA. The perfect effects of the form are useless against exalts near your own essence, if they stun or use a charm.


I would allow all SMA in my game but they should requiere +1 in the essence prereq to be learned.
 
I should note that the fey mutation is nice and well... BUT, it takes 4 points of mutations to learn Martial Arts as a DB. Also, the mutation points cuts into your mutation cap, as well as increasing all future costs on essence and charms... which hurts you ALOT.


Second point, a fey's hideously small essence pool of (essence x 10) means that you can't keep up with an exalt with kungfu charms... just... don't try.
 
Yeah, the Fae have some nice stuff available, but while they are tough, they are just a bit underpowered in Creation to match my image of the boogieman they should be.  I hope WW does something to help out with that.

I wasn't arguing based on power level, don't worry! I was complaining about it from a thematic perspective, because it struck me as odd that they could learn real martial arts..

I was referring rather to a distinction between the real martial arts charms and fake emulations devised by the Fair Folk to ape the real thing. I don't think FF should be able to practise real martial arts in the setting, as real martial arts represent an elevation of spiritual understanding that a being of chaos shouldn't be able to grasp.
 
Your right, fea cant learn MA styles normally, thats why it takes a mutation to do it. An alteration of what they are on a fundamental level. You can/and should make it so most Fae who learn this charm are...diffrent from the others. Least IMO.

PLEASE tell me you didn't just reference a Steve Martin/Queen Latifah movie as your proof for Tai(e) Bo being a real martial art.....
 
Isn't T'ai Bo a ripoff of T'ai Chi, the real lethal martial art disguised as a slow meditation? Which, incidentally, is the reason my dad can still walk: it's apparently a badass form of self-healing, as well as a martial art. Lots of awesome there, with that T'ai Chi.

But if T'ai Chi Master is anything to go by, it's a pretty badass martial art. Particularly when Jet Li is doing it.

Though if Jet Li were to use Tae Bo, he'd probably take down all of the opposition while keeping his breathing and heart rate under perfect control.

No. Tae Bo isn't slow. It's an aerobic exercise routine.
 
Just like any repetition of movement for an extended period time that gets your heart and respiration rate up resulting in the burning of calories. I could flail around for 1 hour and still get the exercise I need. I think Tai Bo is somewhat valid in that it brings a soft form of martial arts to a larger community and then results in an increased interest in real martial arts. So to say it isn't a valid form of activity might be too strong of an analysis.


As this post is way too overboard for the material at hand.
 
The main point of contention isn't that Tae Bo is somehow "invalid" or not a worthwhile activity, but that it's not a fighting system.
