You’re gonna go far kid…

Byron stared at the big red angry F in front of him on the page. This was his last straw, if he kept going this way he might just have to repeat the year. The voices of his parents swum round his head. He’d put off actually doing some studying until the last second as per usual, the only problem is, he thought the last second was tonight and the test was tomorrow. He could barely concentrate in class and relied on studying the web and the text books at home. The words the teacher said just seemed to get drowned out by stupid things his brain liked to focus on, the the noise of the classroom, a tapping pen, the sound of people outside. The aircon. Anything, it seemed, except the teacher.

The class let out, the teacher left and then filed out all the students, Byron taking up the rear. As soon as they were clear of the classroom he felt someone approaching

“Yoink!”

Suddenly another boy ripped the paper out of his hands and held it up “pay up boys! He’s dumber than r*tard who can’t even read. Byron saw red, his face was practically purple. Suddenly he forgot that he’d seen the principal twice this week alone already, or that his dad had given him a good thump for telling him to ‘shove it’s when he demanded Byron showed him his report card. Byron was smaller than this kid and shorter. But it just took one swift right hook square into his nose to take him down. Byron then kicked the crying bully a few times for good measure. Inevitably, an adult heard the crying and suddenly he was being dragged by the scruff of his neck down the hall yet again.

He sat down in the office waiting room with an angry huff on the chair. Taking a glance around the room he noticed another boy already there. He smirked to himself. This boy was here just as much as he was, if not more. He figured he may as well say something since they were always waiting in this damn room together.

“The r*tard who can’t read, huh.” He said loudly across the silent room, before he had another angry boy looking for a fight in the middle of the school office, he quickly put his hands up in a surrendering gesture”Hey,” he said with a shrug. “Turns out I scored lower than you.”

He paused for a moment, for dramatic effect “it’s right though, cause no matter what score you get on a test, you still fall like a sack of shit and cry for momma when you get a punch in the nose, apparently.” He sat back in his chair with a satisfied look on his face “I hope I broke it”

He was putting on a brave face of course, sitting there with that carefree, easy smile. They were gonna suspend him this time for sure. He’d be trapped at home each day with his raging father and disappointed mother. He was scared out of his little mind. He sure as hell wasn’t gonna show it though. Maybe he’d skip going home today, postpone it a little. Down to the falls. He knew all the little trails that were overgrown and unused. Heck… maybe this boy had somewhere he could crash temporarily.

Then again, if his dad had to look for him Byron internally shuddered at the idea.

Leo’s fists clenched tightly as he glared at the clock on the classroom wall, the ticking sound only adding to his frustration. He wasn’t sure what pissed him off more, the fact that he had detention again, or the fact that it was over something so stupid. This time, it was because he had shoved another kid at lunch after being taunted. They’d called him "worthless," a word that always set him off. Leo didn’t even think twice when he pushed the kid into the table, causing trays and food to fly everywhere. The teachers rushed in before it could turn into a full-blown fight, and now here he was, stuck in the office yet again, arms crossed, his foot tapping impatiently.

He hated this place. The sterile smell of the office, the boring posters on the wall about responsibility, and the principal’s fake 'concern' whenever she scolded him. The principal hadn’t bought his excuse that it was self-defense, didn’t they get that kid had it coming? Leo scoffed at the memory of the kid’s smug face, mocking him in front of everyone. It wasn’t the first time Leo found himself in detention, and it wouldn’t be the last. His temper always got the better of him. He wasn’t about to let anyone talk down to him, no matter how many times they dragged him into this stupid office.

None of it mattered. Nobody understood what it was like being him. Not his teachers, not his parents. Definitely not his classmates.

As he sat there, he heard footsteps and the sound of another chair dragging across the floor. Great, another kid in trouble. He glanced over, recognizing the kid that was always here whenever he was. They were always there, the two of them, they’d never really talked much, but Leo had seen him around.
Then the kid said something to him across the room. Leo's eyes narrowed and he could feel that familiar anger rise in his chest. He shot back without thinking.

"What’d you say?" His voice was sharp, daring for him to keep talking.

Leo leaned forward with his fists still clenched at his sides. He didn’t trust anyone here. He didn’t care what anyone said, but this kid? Trying to make jokes about his dyslexia and being annoying by pausing for dramatics. Leo wasn’t having it. He didn’t care if he was joking or serious, it felt like an attack either way. Everything always did.

His fists tightened, and he snapped back, “Yeah, well, who asked you, huh?” His voice was low and aggressive, like he was ready to fight again right there in the office. “Just ‘cause you threw one punch doesn’t mean you’re tough.”

Leo’s expression faltered for just a second before he masked it with his usual scowl. He didn’t know how to take it when someone didn’t push back. Was this dude actually trying to be friendly? That didn’t happen often. He wasn’t sure what to do with that.

Finally, he gave a short laugh, “Was it a good punch at least?”

Leo shifted in his seat, looking away briefly before returning his gaze to the kid, his voice quieter but still holding that edge of defiance.

"So, what name did your fucked up parents give you?" Leo glanced at him, something almost like understanding flickering in his eyes for the first time.

Offspring

You’re gonna go far kid…

Byron’s words definitely had the desired effect on the boy. Byron’s easy smile never wavered as he squared up, nostrils flaring like a bull. When Byron stayed relaxed in his seat. it seemed to relax this kid too. He settled down, relaxing his clenched fists. Risky play, but paid off he thought to himself as he watched the rage on his face cool off to become a general moody scowl. Byron found the humor was the best way to mask his feelings. He had a smart mouth, and tended to get himself into trouble with it, so naturally, he had to have a way to get him back out.

Although this boy was not even in his grade, Byron had heard of him plenty. He had quite the reputation in the school. Since his teacher had basically called out his disability, and, well, this school was full of assholes. Byron didn’t really have much of an excuse for his performance. Everyone else just seemed to just apply themselves, as several adults in his life had reaffirmed. It left him feeling like, well, they must be right. He's either not trying hard enough, or he's just plain dumb.

This is not the time for a pity party, Byron. He thought to himself.

When the kid spoke again, there was even a little chuckle accenting the end of his question. Byron put on a feigned offended look "I only throw good punches, ya hear?” he said returning the chuckle and holding up his fist which still had dried blood on it and looked a little bit swollen. Then the boy said something that threw him for just a second, revealing to the other boy that his words had been pretty accurate. He got a hold of himself quickly. “I’m Byron” he said “what did yours give you?”

Not long after that the young peppy receptionist with her loud metallic black flats stepped into the room. Her expression was always a professional, obviously fake smile, and she spoke to the children like they were preschoolers. "Leo Carranza, been up to no good again? Tisk tisk" God, what a fucking bitch Byron thought, his smile disappearing instantly. "You too Byron? Oh my days, we'd best let the nurse clean up that hand of yours." She turned back to Leo "In you go. The Principal is ready for you"

"Hi Miss Winters. Awesome idea, but I think she might be a bit busy resetting Jackson's fucking nose"
Her eyes widened and then he shot him a disgusted look.
"Well, Williams, I expect we'll all feel a lot more relaxed when you are absent next week." She turned on her heels abruptly and click clacked her way down the hall, gesturing for Leo to follow her. Byron's bravado faded in an instant as she confirmed what he'd been grimly expecting. Fuck sake... he thought to himself, very aware that woman was probably going to pass her glowing review of Byron on to the principal, sealing his fate That might have been a good time to shut the fuck up... He smiled to himself a little Maybe it was kind of worth it from the look on her face though.
