It feels like a pattern spider has left the Loom and tried to strike out on its own, which would explain it getting involved in non-Exalted affairs

You know I still have a character idea revolving around that... somewhere. Pattern Spiders are just the coolest little beasties in Creation. Freakin' adorable in some of their lore too!
