A breath caught in Al's throat when O'Connel painted a big read target on Liri. Up until then the captains speech was great. Short sweet and to the point, as the captains pre-voyage speeches always were. The crew hooped and hollered excitedly at the idea of treasure, like they always did. Something was different about the captain this time though. He seemed to not be enjoying himself as much as normal. Normally he'd be bouncing with excitement, but this time he seemed much more subdued. Al didn't think it was a huge deal, but he took notice of it all the same.
He understood the reasoning behind O'Connel's speech. The two had spoken before about how they didn't trust a majority of the crew. This was a way of picking out the bad apples, so to speak. If there were an incident, consequences would be dealt. The accused would probably be thrown in the brig until they got to port somewhere else, and then they'd be sent packing. A crew needed to have trust and loyalty, and the captain wasn't feeling too much of that at the moment.
His speech done, the captain bounded away back to his quarters leaving Al to deal with what was essentially a pack of rabid dogs. Suddenlyvhe felt dozens of hungry eyes on him and his charge. The more savage members of the crew began to stare up and down Liri's body, not with good intent. Al took a slight step closer to her and shot a look to the crowd that said, "Mess with her and you mess with me." Of course small and squirrelly Al wouldn't be able to fight off the entire crew, but he had dangerous friends. Namely, the captain, but he had quite a few members of the crew who, despite their picking on him, were actually fond of the storytelling cabin boy. Fortunately many of the crew got the picture and backed off quietly, moving back to their positions on board.
Sometime during the show Liri had slipped away. Al was focused on intimidating the crew, and hadn't noticed her leave. She'd said something about her not having her sea-legs, so she must have gone somewhere to wait out the nausea. She didn't know the ship well at all, so there is only one place she'd go.
He slid down the ladder into the brig. He didn't suppose she'd want him around if she was feeling ill. She was too proud, but it was his job to stick to her like stink on a monkey. Captains orders. He would never admit it, but he was also a little worried about her. He strode into her cell to find her doubled over in pain. He slid to her side and touched her shoulder. "What happened?"
