Characters: Oden ( SilverFeathers SilverFeathers ), Squink ( Femboy Femboy )

Location: Glymergloom
, a fae village located within a deep and thick woodland area where fae magic appears to keep it within its' own state of eternal night. The time is... debatable, the weather being rather still with lightly cloudy skies, and not an ounce of wind to be found.

The woods that held this village hidden within its' depths would find itself as a location between Oden and her destination of Kuridan. There wasn't much signage or direction at all about the woodlands or the location within, proving to be a rather unnatural oddity as it would appear to turn from day to night rather quickly upon arrival. Up until the village had been in sight, there wasn't much of anything to note other than what felt like unnerving ambience and odd sounds akin to whispers. The clearer moonlight that overshined the golden-lit little village nestled away in secrecy stood out amongst the dark environment, and those who were around were not very many in number. Though noticeably, they were all fae inhabitants with rather dark colors and the occasional bright accents that made them stand out. Even if this was the best route to Kuridan, the owl's presence would likely raise eyebrows and receive a few glances.

Though her presence wouldn't prove too distractive to others, it would soon enough be clear that she wasn't going to just pass through completely ignored.1733694928784.jpeg
A fae being, overly dark in their colours except for hints of orange within their drapes and tattered-looking wings, had approached the owlkin. Their face held a blank expression, and soon enough displayed a rather small, amused smirk on their face before returning back to a blank slate. Their mouth would open a very small amount, speaking in a soft yet higher-pitched voice.
"A funny coincidence, should it be mentioned not that long ago by another. Usually, non-fae and outsiders in general do not arrive within these hidden grottos, and never with the intent to actually come here. Whilst it is likely startling, this is Glymergloom, and we have a custom for new arrivals to attend to. I am one of the Woodwatchers, you need not know me, but it is of importance and of expected gesture that you share your name. New arrivals, intending to stay or not, must abide by an entry requirement even if just passing through or if coming here was an accident. You are encouraged to visit and find stay in The Sparklecap Kegplace, a tavern and inn where you'll eventually be informed more on this matter... " they had answered in their feminine tone, their faint yellowish-white glowing eyes scanning over the owlkin for a moment before speaking again.

"For few outsiders try it, there is no point in attempting to escape from these expectations at this point. The Woodwatchers keep eyes on these woods for the Seers, we don't like trouble in our personal community... " they'd briefly mention, nodding their head towards the closest lit building. There were audibly voices inside, and clearly a lot of people within and staying.
1733697602533.png
The tavern would be filled with people, obviously the image isn't because it's a static image for the purpose of giving an idea of what the environment looks like, don't bash me over the head with the barstool because the image isn't 100% accurately befitting the scenario and is negatively impacting your immersion by 0.2%. Amongst the patrons, Oden's amazing birby eyesight might pick out a familiar set of robes sat in the corner with their head down. It was hard to notice anything else about them, but if the wise old birb knew how to remember things, they'd surely recognise the sight of an old ilithid friend's singular unchanged getup hanging out in the corner... though the question would be what they were doing here... and whatever these 'local customs' were for new arrivals.

Oden (#ACA9A7)

As much as she was an experienced traveller, being thrown out into the wild without an ounce of preparation would leave its mark on anyone, not to mention having found herself in foreign land on the complete other side of the continent. With her greying feathers dishevelled, and her eyes slightly sunken and dark from a lack of peaceful sleep, she slowly trotted into Glymergloom without too much on the mind.

Even if fatigued, the subtle smirk on the fae that approached did not escape the old owl's notice. "Alright. I'm Oden." With a placid expression and tone, she merely nodded and replied her name. This deep in the See, she had encountered countless tricksters and pranksters already, what was one more?

Following the dim path towards the bustling building, Oden had to admit all the noise was not her cup of tea at the moment. She couldn't even be sure how much of what she was seeing was real, the fae did love their shenanigans after all. Although she briefly paused at the sight of someone potentially familiar, an old friend she would like to hear back from, she glossed over the sight, her expression remaining rather deadpan.

She didn't believe it could really be her. There were likely fae lurking in the background awaiting her reaction. She was too tired to humour them: seeing false images of old friends and family had grown old quickly. Instead, she wandered towards the bar and approached who she assumed to be the bartender. "Have any tea?" She posed gently once she found her turn to speak, rustling through her pouch for little things to barter with. Illusion or not, it'd be nice to drink something.

With the unnamed dark fae that had held up Oden leaving her to visit the bar whilst the owlkin waited, the familiar-looking figure wouldn't pay any notice to Oden's presence at all as the owlkin would have instead approached the bartender. They were behind the counter with a gentle smile on their face, yet not truly focusing their gaze on anything they were doing or any patron as if constantly considering thoughts in their own mind-palace. Once Oden had questioned about the possibility of tea, they turned their head in the general direction of the owl although never managing to gain real eye contact. They eyed the elderly bird's direction in a way like Oden wasn't even standing there, yet the fae man was aware of some sort of presence like hearing a ghost.
1733771803544.png
"Another one not from around here. What are the odds? It feels like faces have become rather interesting amidst this fortnight... " he uttered, taking a brief moment to peruse the room behind Oden now that he had turned his attention back to his work and surroundings. For a bartender, his suit was rather exquisite in its' quality and stain-free, his face being as much as a blank expression as was the first fae who met the owlkin in conversation while also sharing similarly glowy eyes albeit with a rather faded and pupil-less look. Humming softly and lightly running his hands across the counter, he considered an answer and gave a small bow of his head.

"Yes, we carry a lot for those who come through here. Not many choose the option, but we carry Glowwillow Black and Harleaf-Merrinin Mint. If you're of... outsider culture and knowledge, we do carry Green and standard Black, or Herbal-mixed Blend. Or just a 'standard-blend' tea of the simplest variety if something simple in contents is what you're after... " the fae mentioned in offer for a moment, waiting for a moment to hear out the owlkin's desire as he scratched his chin in thought for a moment, supposing he may as well bring up a question.

"Not to push your mind about anything, but what exactly has you coming this way on the road? I don't usually get the chance to ask mystery faces such, usually they're immediately dragged off for their 'newcomer' duties whether they like it or not. It's usually not too troublesome, but some just can't stand it. Whoever they've taken in there last is clearly wasting and holding up their time, feels like it's probably the first in decades there's been a queue for that kind of thing. Sometimes it feels like you could meet one of these completely innocent, dumb-founded people only to hear about their untimely demise a month or so later, at least from how they act or treat it. I thought outsiders would have had thicker skin from what they usually display... at least it keeps our community small" he openly spoke his mind, still never truly looking Oden in the face or eyes as he only ever occasionally looked somewhere close within her general direction, his hands reaching underneath the bar counter and around the contents behind him to begin preparing to fill a cup of tea whenever the old owl had made her mind.

Oden (#ACA9A7)

Faintly, Oden wondered if the fae before her was blind. There was no negative judgement to that thought: those that could operate without their key senses would always have her respect. But watching the bartender soon bring his wayward gaze back to reality quelled such trivial speculations. Whether he was or not, did not matter; unless he wanted to speak about it himself.

"Seems a popular time for travel indeed," smiling softly, the old owl returned the idle conversation topic, thinking her journey was not quite as 'voluntary' as others but it was what it was. Pondering her options for tea, she held and massaged her weary hands together for a moment before speaking.

"Since I've come all the way here, may as well try the local specialties," Oden chuckled faintly, "I'll have the Harleaf-Merrinin Mint tea." Her re-iteration of the term was slow and low-toned, as she tried her best not to disrespectfully butcher the pronunciation. "Hopefully it'll help wake me up a bit for these... 'newcomer' duties your community speaks so warningly of," she hummed, squinting her wrinkly eyes a little bit as she watched him begin the tea-brewing.

"I am just passing by on my way home. It's been a long journey, so I was taking the most direct path." She glossed over his question briefly, not really one to go in-depth in her storytelling to strangers, whilst fatigued no less. Listening to his rant silently with lowered eyes, for a few brief moments there was only the sound of the tavern's bustling chatter in the background before she responded. "These... 'newcomer' duties of yours... why do you have them? Just an old tradition?" Oden tilted her head a little sleepily, though genuinely curious toward much of the eccentric culture of the fae.

The bartender took a moment of silence as he effortlessly moved his hands across the counter to reach amongst cups and such, not a single sound of porcelain or glass clacking together as he removed them with such elegance like an experienced surgeon. He hummed a soft tone as he gave a small bow of his head in nod, returning to the bar where the owl awaited and placing forth a fae-designed teacup, a simple white in colour crafted of quality porcelain and a floral pattern of violet lotuses and dark-purple leaves as one might expect to grow in the prettier parts of a dark overgrowth like Glymergloom.

"Usually, the travellers take the first choice of alcohol that seems like something they recognise, it's usually work-related travellers desiring a shortcut that end up accidenting their way into here. I wouldn't expect someone to be wandering by themselves without some calibur of experience, it makes me curious what stories or secrets you might have up your sleeve, but perhaps that is too nosy or too much to tell for one sitting" he answered, already in the midst of putting together the tea she had ordered and moving to do it as if he had memorised and performed the art a thousand times over. Taking a small amount of certain leaves and herbs that were stored amongst his bar's contents, he had them briefly mashed as he collected some already prepped boiling water and began putting it all together.

"Here you are ma'am, Harleaf-Merrinin Mint tea, the three herbs that make up this tea all come from this woodland's lakeside growths or the outer edge. Then again, that third ingredient's not commonly known, mostly for the fact of making Glymergloom's the most authentic and unreplicatable. Even though it's hot, the taste usually has a bit of a striking cool to it like you'd expect any mint should, but the Harleaf and that elusive third just implement the right sort of spice that warms the body and soul, and balances out the flavour. But usually people couldn't stand to listen to an explanation on what's in their drink... " he chuffed softly, a small smile before returning back to the bog-standard blank slate of an expression. Scratching his chin, he thought about the newcomer trials.

"Hm, I suppose that's on the right track. I do believe I've had and heard this discussion a few times. See, Glymergloom here adopted a labour-based economy. While yes, I and others usually will take money, most trade and product is done by doing. That, and however decades ago on the up-start of this place, there was a whole territory dispute between the fae inhabitants who accepted it as their home, and outside camps from the bigger cities looking to take all the natural resources found here. I'm no historian, but when early-Glymergloom got their free rights, and the rights to call it their land, they wanted to really wall everyone out and form an independent society. Taxing all visitors was an option, but it was believed more encouraging to keep people out if visitor's time could be wasted doing tedious tasks and labour. It also gave the chance to learn the ins and outs on what's going on elsewhere without having to interact with the rest of the world, but that doesn't mean that all Glymergloom inhabitants never leave. Despite just being a bartender, I'm technically quite rich in this closed community. I'm in contact with our agricultural seer and craftseer and the likes, so a lot of the business and news ends up going through me. Then again, I'm not a historian, a lot of those are left to the elder seers to think about" he explained, going on to polish and clean an empty glass whilst informing Oden on what he knew about the trials and their originating history. It hopefully shouldn't have been long until Oden was taken elsewhere to do them, but it did seem like things were running at a slower pace. He turned his head around the room, keeping attention on everything that was going on to make sure nothing was amiss. There were a few other non-fae in the room, somewhat feeling like there really were a few others also waiting on their turn.

"Usually they sometimes take a while since those running the trials get bored and mess with people, it's not often they get the chance to do so. Then again, it feels like they'd be bored themselves taking this long, I couldn't begin to guess what's taking so long... they took in two or three last as far as I remembered, but maybe one of them's giving trouble. Two of them were awfully bickery and suspicious, but they shouldn't get into much trouble. Don't know what was up with the last one, but they weren't at all like the other two. They were at least much nicer and cheerful though" he thought to himself, hearing the sound of opening bar doors and turning his head. After a momentary stare like he was trying to register who had came through, he sighed a little and gave a small shrug.

"Speak of the devil, sometimes talking really does will things into existence... I can only assume this one is not currently on their task, just what is taking so long?" he considered, of which someone else awkwardly managed their way into the bar and was hesitantly cautious to not slightly bump anyone as she gave a wave to the bartender.

"Hi, Mr. Kawyx, I was told to bring you these... plant... thingies" a familiar voice introduced, the purply-squishy squish speaking out as she clutched what looked like a little woven picnic basket full of contents along with her. Plus, she was very clearly not the person sat in the corner of the room, even though they both had identical robes.

Squink cheerfully spoke as she peacefully strolled her way towards the counter, she was clearly too distracted and focused on doing a good job to even notice the presence of Oden, let alone that someone else was there talking to him.
"They were busy and sent me away, so someone told me to bring these to you... I don't know what they are... o-or who gave them to me" the ilithd answered, although she became more confused at her own goal the more she began to question what she actually remembered.
"Ah, those might be the new hops I've been waiting on, hand them over dear and take a seat somewhere while you wait. I'm sure someone'll come find you".

Oden (#ACA9A7)

The fae were as elegant as ever. Musing slightly as he worked, the old owl rubbed her thumb against the delicate violet-hued decor of her teacup, closing her eyes and resting her mind a little with the sound of his humming amidst the boisterous sounds echoing throughout the rest of the tavern.

"I can't blame them. You can't deny the 'fun' many fae like to pull on the unsuspecting." Oden chuckled gently at the mention of travellers and their usual choices. If she had more at stake, perhaps she would be more like them. But she had little to care for right now. Still, as the topic moved towards an interest in her own tales, she could only smile. "Indeed. I'd actually rather like just some peace and quiet, but sometimes there are simply more pressing matters at hand..." she trailed off slightly as her tea was presented, examining the colour before bringing the cup to her beak. "Still, I thank you for your hospitality thus far."

Taking note of the tea's ingredients and breakdown, she took a gentle sip, letting the steam hit her little face feathers as the mix of invigorating mint and warm spices washed over her. Especially as a once elder of her clan, Oden had tried and been offered many teas in her lifetime. Even if the ones she were accustomed to were more commonly of Kuridan, she had been given the chance to taste quite the few foreign delicacies before too. "I welcome it. I'll have you know I'm quite the enjoyer of tea," she reassured gently. Although she generally preferred milder flavours, she did quite enjoy this unique tea, and her lightened eyes showed it.

"I see. How curious. The environment around here must be quite precious and self-sustainable then, to almost not welcome outsiders entirely," Oden kept her gaze on her tea as she commented without too much thought. The latter talk on prior trialists didn't interest her too much: meeting new travellers had always been like opening a mystery box.

Not turning her head, it was only when she heard the ilithid's voice that Oden turned to glance at the newcomer. But even then, the old owl only stared briefly before taking another sip of her tea as the two exchanged words. Still, tapping her fingers on the table, she seemed thoughtful for a while before deciding confrontation was perhaps the favoured plan of action. Or else they'd keep playing these silly games with her.

<"Hello dear. Long time no see, it's good to see you again. If you don't mind, would you let me appraise you?"> She spoke up rather bluntly in the bestial tongue, wanting to solve such paranoia sooner rather than later. There was no need to overthink if she could do something about it. Though a bluff, Oden watched Squink's reaction very carefully, heightening her senses and using her insight to see through any guises.

Normally she wouldn't be this pessimistic, but she simply didn't believe the ilithid could be anywhere near here by now. In her assumed timeline of how things should have progressed, Squink should hopefully have completed those trials and be enjoying herself in the unique culture and sights of the sky kingdom by now. Even if she was done in the sky, and she knew the ilithid to be quite the wanderer, she could be anywhere in the continent. Why would she be here? What were the chances?

The ilithid who had cheerfully arrived stopped for a moment, giving a glance to see who exactly had asked for the chance to appraise her (which is quite ironic considering that the ability appraising her does not actually include the Appraisal skill). Squink hesitated for a moment, blinking twice when greeted with the sight of Oden after their last encounter being the squishy cephalopod watching her bird friend abruptly ejected out of a flying city victim to wherever gravity had taken them

"O-Oden? Is that... really you?" she hesitantly asked, lightly clasping her hands together having not handed over the basket of contents yet. The bar handler simply rolled his eyes lightly only assuming the two must've met.
"I-I... wouldn't expect you to be here, y-you could've been anywhere, did... when you were pushed out of the Sky City, d-did you land here? I had n-no idea, I was... I-I was a little, upset when... they took you out of the city... " Squink spoke, falling a little quiet as she trailed off in thought. She hesitated as she looked down at her hands.
"I... didn't end up spending much time there after the trial. I-it felt a little lonely and awkward, s-so I waited until I could get a free trip out a-and... um, s-so, what have you been up to?" she asked, remembering Oden wanted to appraise her, though the owl would probably notice Squink was doing all of her Squimking in Squimkshape order. As far as was recognisable, nothing seemed to be wrong or suspicous about the ilithid... well, perhaps unless for in what reason they were here of all places.

"O-oh, right, you can appraise me if you want... w-what for? Did I... d-do something wrong?" Squimkambles questioned, tilting her head lightly. Soon enough the bartender beckoned her for the basket in which she gave to them.

1734130375464.png
"Great, you two know eachother. Maybe you can both do your 'newcomer task' together and get things going smoother and faster than how they seem to be" he mentioned, taking the basket in order to do what he had to with its' contents, likely going to place and store such where it was needed be. In the meantime, the ilithid awkwardly looked to the owlkin they knew as a longtime friend, quite awkward as if such an encounter felt completely unnatural and untrustworthy.

"S-so... um, what might you be doing here? I w-would've maybe thought you had personal important stuff to go to, unless t-this is one of them, which I... wouldn't know" Squink awkwardly stammered, fidgeting her hands together as her tentacles lightly quivered.
"T-this isn't some... weird trick, or something, right? O-or maybe you... wouldn't answer that truthfully b-because it's a trick... uhm...".

Oden (#ACA9A7)

Femboy Femboy (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
Just as she looked at her, Oden too finally properly looked at Squink. Even if the possibility of high level trickery gnawed at her, she couldn't help but run her eyes carefully over the ilithid's being, checking for any small signs of injury or ill health that she knew her old friend might try to hide. With nothing of note to worry about, not even a tear in her tell-tale clothing, the old owl sighed softly in relief.

Although, with the results of her demeanour examination also finding nothing suspicious, she could only sigh once more. This time with far more complicated emotion. Still, regardless of what could be, she should try her best to treat this reunion with sincerity. Even if she might have to redo it again later; she would do so as many times as it takes, because as much as Oden was a little mentally worn down, she would never want to wrong a genuine reunion.

"Yes dear, it's me. The very same wrinkly old owl you once travelled the continent with." Oden smiled, her eyes wrinkling into soft crescents as she put down her teacup and stood up. "I hope the sky treated you well in my absence." She reached out for a gentle hug, wrapping her in a careful cocoon of silvery grey wings and frail feathers. Being unable to confirm each other's livelihood likely gnawed at them both, and she wanted to comfort that feeling.

"No, I was fortunate to land near the capital of Widersia, Clockhaven. We should go there sometime, it's quite the fascinating technological city," Oden chuckled gently, quietly listening in to her friend's tale and nodding along. "I see. Perhaps we could also try going there again one day for a more proper experience. Paint over the unfortunate memories with some fresh ones," she appeased softly, not wanting either of them to leave off such a large, elaborate and historical nation with bad taste.

Sitting herself back down, she continued. "In regards to myself, I've just been slowly trying to return home. Aided with a few things here and there to keep myself afloat," she hummed, though her eyes tilted slightly as her 'appraisal' was questioned. "No. Just being cautious." She replied lightly, not elaborating much further on the matter as she took another sip of her tea.

With Squink's worries coming to light, Oden's gaze could only sadden. If this was an illusion, it certainly was a cruel one. Briefly, the old owl's claws tightened around her teacup, before letting go and facing Squink straight on. Slowly, she reached out to take her hand in hers, wrapping it carefully as she thought about what to say with lowered eyes. "I understand what you're afraid of. Perhaps I'm even more afraid of it than you." She chuckled amusedly, keeping her tone faint yet light-hearted. "There's nothing that can really be said or done to confirm the truth. But we must continue on regardless." She pat her hand reassuringly before letting go and returning to her tea with a calm expression.

"Do you mind telling me what your experience in this village has been like? I rather just arrived and should mentally prepare for what is ahead." Oden smiled softly, treating her as usual as if nothing was or could be wrong.

Falling a little hesitant as she awaited Oden's response, Squink grew nervous up until the point Oden had responded back to her, albeit a little worried she was going to say something un-Odenlike or questionable due to being tricked. Even though not much was said, the squishable ilithid was a lot more calmed by what she heard, the visual movements of the tendrils on her face being lifted to that of a light smile underneath. Whether or not it had been truly that long since they were apart, it had felt like an eternity that was going to last forever and ever.

"It was... okay enough, though I don't feel like travelling to unknown places and such is that enjoyable without people that I'm really that used to. It didn't seem like I was on the greatest terms with anyone else there, or that they were just trying to be nice to me... that and, the only one who felt genuine was Eliza but she likely always had something better to do than spend time with me after all" the squishy ilithid grumbled softly, lightly rubbing their upper arm as they glanced down at the floor for a moment. Looking back up to hear what had happened to Oden after she was ejected, Squink was a little surprised that Widersia was where she had ended up landing. Though for the most part, Squink was entirely relieved to find out that she actually was fine after the sudden drop.

"O-oh, that sounds interesting, I don't really know much about technology but it does seem really cool and smart... m-maybe they could teach me something over there, or such. I... often don't really plan where I'm going, at least I haven't in a long while... " Squink awkwardly answered with a small faint light-pinkish hue blush on her face, nodding about visiting the Sky Citty once again to make a better memory of it.

"Oh, that could be fun, I'm sure going with you any place could be a pretty interesting place to visit. It makes me wonder what kinds of cities and stuff are all over the world... maybe they have something so amazingly special that I couldn't even begin to consider" Squink thought about it with a small smile. Then, the purple squishy bean thought about the time they had spent in the village so far, though not a whole lot came to mind.

"I came here not that long ago because some fae elsewhere told me about it. I had some ideas on what I could maybe do, and I bought this mask from a nice moth-lady though I was planning to get it enchanted here. I thought maybe if I helped a little, someone could do some special enchanting they apparently do here, though they took the mask for now. I'd only hope that they gave it back after I finished whatever my tasks were... people have at least been... nice enough, or that they've just been doing their own things. Though, the place feels really creepy, and... maybe not that homely for tourists. There were some others who showed up around the same time as me, though they're taking a while with their thingies they're having them do, but I don't really know why. They only had to water and gather some things, so I don't get what's the problem. Maybe they're doing other things too... has your time here been okay? I never noticed you arrive before, did you get to go on any other adventures or something on the way here?".

Oden (#ACA9A7)

Femboy Femboy (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ
Oden listened quietly to Squink's continued ramblings of her tales in the sky, piecing the scene together in her mind as she rubbed her teacup. "Lonesome ventures can get lonely indeed," She smiled softly, "Though over time, you get used to it." Her eyes lidded, lost in a brief haze of the past, younger her, before returning to their usual calm, amber colour. Regardless, watching Squink grow enlivened and motivated by her little adventure suggestions made the old owl smile once more. Drive and ambition had always been her favourite thing to see in younger folk. A will to continue forward was such a precious thing.

"Think I arrived as you were doing one of those 'newcomer tasks' as they call it." Oden responded carefully, her gaze adrift as she pondered the peculiarities her ilithid friend brought up. "I do recall hearing from the bartender, or Mr. Kawyx as you called him, that the other two in your group might be a little more trouble than you or I might be." She spoke on the matter briefly with discretion, sipping her tea shortly after. "Here's hoping they won't cause a fuss that will drag us into it, and we can soon be on our way," Oden nodded with a faint smile, wondering if fate would be kind enough to leave her be this time.

"As for my adventures, most of my journey was rather mundane," the greying owl began impassively. "Ah, but I did encounter an interesting cave of illusions in the beginning. Met a knight there. Kindle the 2nd I think he called himself. A kind boy." Oden's expression grew faintly warmer at the memory. "Though unharmed, I was still quite the mess after my sudden crash-landing. For the rations and directions he gave me, I owe that human a debt." The chuckle that followed was also genial, though as it trailed off it seemed to grow less sincere.

Unfortunately, the memories continued to flow, and her entrance into the southern See quickly sobered her emotion. But Oden would not share the tales of the false squinks she had seen, nor the illusions of lost friends and family she had encountered. The fae could truly be cruel.

"But special enchanting you say? Such an interesting topic you've been lured here by. What enchantments do you hope the mask to achieve?" She turned the topic away gently, letting herself be comforted by the companionship and vitality of her old friend.

Even though it was already very apparent and obvious, the ilithid getting to enjoy the elder owl's company and conversation once more after so long was the greatest delight and surprise she hadn't been expecting. Squink gave a light tilt of her head to the rather unfocused look Oden appeared to give when considering about how one would soon enough get over loneliness, somewhat wondering if there were things Oden hadn't told her about that weighed on her mind although not considering to push it for the moment. It would probably be rude.

"W-well, it seems like we've luckily found eachother again, so we'll just need to be extra careful about uhm... where we go, and the rules of those places and stuff, and then we can go places together!" the purply-squishable lady smiled with a quiet, cheerful hum as her attention was diverted to listening to when Oden arrived. She thought about it for a moment.
"Hopefully, t-though I don't know why someone would purposefully come here to cause trouble... maybe it's an accident... " Squink considered, trying to give the two apparent 'troublemaker' strangers the benefit of the doubt within her consideration.

"Oh, that sounds interesting, hopefully it wasn't too difficult or weird for you. M-maybe you can tell me about that or other things you've done and places you've been to when we're done with... w-whatever it is that we have to do... " she mentioned, soon enough moving on to the mask detail.

"Well... I-I'm not entirely sure, but I thought maybe if I could have something which... I don't know, m-maybe helped me do things easier, or made people feel more comfortable around me since... I... d-don't exactly look that normal to a lot of people, things would work out better. A-also, if I tried to... maybe do things without worrying that people would remember me, or tried learning to do things without relying on mind powers, then things would be a lot easier for me. If I started doing good things, I don't know if I'd feel comfortable having my name and face attached to all of it, l-like that blue Michael guy who everyone knows. I-I don't think I could handle the pressure or attention ALL the time... " Squink mentioned softly as she fidgeted with her hands, looking down at the floor briefly.

With a little while wait, the fae who had stopped Oden on the way in would soon enough arrive to the bar and quickly glance around before their eyes had connected with the two, approaching them without much hesitance.
1735055830818.png
"You two, I'd like to take you to your task for the time being. Please finish up with what you are doing quickly, and come with me. Your task should be simple enough, though I'd best warn you to prepare for traversing through areas outsiders would likely consider 'creepy' and 'dangerous', though since you've already proven you aren't strangers to entering strange locations uninvited, I'm sure it shouldn't prove difficult for the both of you" the dark fae had answered, soon enough going to lead them out of the bar and through the outdoor dark woods if they followed. The village path would, after a short while, lead them to a strange river surrounded by magic bubbles.
1735056157388.jpeg
"An inconvenient trip, but you'll have to leave the path and follow the Forest's Spirit River as found here to find where you need to go. Follow it far enough and you'll find the RIver's Final Resting, a sacred fae ground protected by magic that makes it very difficult to easily access it via simple means... which is why you'll have to manually make the trip yourselves. Once you get there, you'll have to collect a luminescent fungi called End's Dark Course, at least by some locals. Its' actual name is Poisonblood Gloomcaps, and are usually a bad omen that grows from the dead of magical beings within these woods. Though, they usually grow within River's Final Resting and are considered rather unappealing and insulting. Plus, alchemists and magic-craftsmen here have found at least some practical uses for them. Your job is to clear them up and retrieve them. There should already be containers and safety equipment to help you gather them when you get there, so focus on getting there for now. There should be nothing else you need to know, so you may go when you are ready. Usually, these tasks would be better prepared, but there has been... unexpected tediums. I shouldn't have to state this, but please do not step in or... disturb the sanctity of the river water, or disturb or ruin anything upon sacred ground" the dark fae spoke, of which the whole goal rather unsettled Squink a little with what felt like its' complexity and seriousness it involved. She had no idea how she was supposed to manage this if they expected her to do something like this by herself.

Squink's optimism towards the two strangers was sweet, and made the old owl smile, even if her own thoughts were less kind and forgiving. Finishing the last of her tea and pushing it back aside on the counter for when the bartender returned, Oden turned to listen to her old friend's inspired ramblings on her mask with a thoughtful gaze.

Lowering her eyes, she slowly opened her beak to reply. "My dear, don't feel too self-conscious about your appearance." she began, briefly examining the features that made up Squink's ilithid appearance before chuckling softly, "I have met countless kinds of beastkin and fae in my lifetime, and you are far from the most unexpected appearance I have seen." Her tone was comforting but also matter-of-factly, idly thinking back to that old mutilated flamingo friend of hers, or that discoloured shrimp-like fellow.

"Those that perhaps do recoil or stare, have merely lived in a bubble all their lives. Think that experience just comes with the life of one who travels far and wide, like you do. Take pride in it." She gave a gentle wink, ruffling her weary feathers a little as to not accidentally fall asleep from the tea.

"But yes, I agree with the matter of fame not being for everyone. I've known people the weight of it all has crushed them to the ground," Oden agreed softly, though her thoughts slowly drifted towards her self. "But even then, perhaps there is a part of me that wishes to not leave forgotten." She chuckled a little dryly, before her attention was diverted by the door opening and a familiar face walking in.

Nodding at the order, she smiled at Squink, "Let us go, my dear," before trotting on over at her usual elderly pace. Neither creepiness nor danger had ever deterred her, though perhaps younger her was a different story. Quite the humbling thought. Musing, Oden checked on Squink, hoping she wasn't too worried as she walked by her side steadily towards the riverside.

"Doesn't seem too complicated a matter. Let's just focus on getting there first, hmm?" Oden nodded and bowed briefly towards the dark fae, her demeanour rather relaxed and calm. A good walk was always nice after some tea. If the instructions and equipment were laid out properly as advertised on the other side, the task didn't seem too bad; implications of what they were gathering aside. If there was a problem, they could also always just walk back and report it. Seemed nothing too complicated on first glance.

Oden's words of wisdom and kindness were truly heartwarming to the rather fragile ilithid, who held a soft smile on her face after briefly ruminating on such words, even with the unnerving task ahead. Although she could feel her heart beating at a million miles per hour due to the stress she was feeling over all of it, Squink held still for a moment to try and recollect her thoughts.
1735680741950.jpeg
"R-right, yes, we should get going. It should be simple enough... I hope" Squink mumbled softly, looking to the river they had been instructed to follow. Trying to muster up her own courage, the squishy ilithid remained close to Oden's side as they made the trip to follow the stream. It was rather quiet, with the exception of the lightest hymn that sounded of wind chimes lightly coated underneath the sound of almost-still water. It was like if you'd put your ear to a seashell, of what people for some reason would call 'hearing the ocean'. I don't know either. Anyway, there was nothing blatantly dangerous. It was quite peaceful, though the rather liminal aura in the area could give a sense of creepiness. It did to Squink anyway, who was trying her best to manage with it as they took their stroll.

"M-maybe we should've asked how long a walk it would take... t-they would've left us close enough by, r-right?" Squink awkwardly questioned, since with time they would evidently lose sight of the dark fae who had directed them on their way. The ilithid wasn't entirely sure what the floating bubbles were, rather curious to touch one although worried it might... do bubble things, like popping, and the possibility of popping some sort of special magical bubble getting her into trouble also worried her.

Though their walk would take them a little while, the river would soon enough lead them to a small opening on another part of the forest. The end of the river would noticeably fizzle into the ground, seeming like the current or source was somewhere underground from the point onwards as their trip would bring them to the mouth of an ominous looking cave. The loud sound of wind flowing in and out of the entrance was the only thing audible in the area, and that they hadn't come across a single living being since they set off.

Squink rather shivered and shuddered at the sight of it, questioning if they had gotten lost or this was truly where they were expected to go. There was no sign or anything obvious, but this was where the river ended.
"U-uhm... d-did we make a wrong... turn, or... y-you don't think i-it's dangerous in there or anything?.. " Squink asked Oden hesitantly, nervously looking to her owlkin companion about it. There was no signage or anything that'd clearly point out what was inside or where they could be going, but there was a lack of other directions to go off of.

The See was always full of things that affronted and bewildered the senses, especially for the her that was mostly magic illiterate. It had been fascinating at first, but quickly drained on the old owl's senses and paranoia, leaving her usual guarded wariness disorientated and dull. Although she knew it was an unsafe mindset, Oden subconsciously tuned out much of the fantastical wonder around her as a result. Still, she paid acute attention to Squink, to ensure her safety... yet to also warily watch for any fraudulent discrepancies.

"They seemed to imply that our destination would become obvious in due time," Oden responded thoughtfully, briefly eyeing the way forward, "I wouldn't assume a location known as sacred ground would be too far or near though." She comforted logically, delicately avoiding mentioning the fact that the See tended to throw much of her common sense out of the window.

As the river tapered thin, leading to the mouth of a cavern, Oden's darkened eyes grew dull. It was a familiar expression; one she used to wear often, back when everyone fought and no one thought to compromise.

"I think I'm beginning to hate caves." Oden stated quietly with a soft, self-mocking sigh, before moving on to address Squink's concerns, "I don't think so. A humid cavern does seem an appropriate locale for luminescent fungi to grow in." She peered into the cave without much hesitation, hoping to give the ilithid some more self-confidence in completing said 'newcomer tasks'. "Might as well check it out." She smiled at Squink more comfortingly, not wanting them to hem and haw too much over this as she marched straight onward unfalteringly, using her darkvision and other senses to their fullest [Owlish E].

Someone once told her that the absence of fear meant no longer treasuring your life. But no matter how true such words were, she was not here to waste her time. She wanted to reduce her time spent in the See as much as possible really. She didn't like it here. A nation recovering from war would naturally not be at it's best, but either way, she'd just prefer to in any other nation but here right now.

Even though their destination should be obvious, the cave entrance didn't feel all too obvious to the ilithid... then again, it was likely her internal desire to not enter such a creepy location. Shivering softly to herself as she noticed Oden's unwavering confidence within the scenario, the ilithid softly mumbled.
"I-I don't think I ever liked caves in the first place... " the squishythid murmured as she trailed a little behind the owl yet trying to remain beside her. To Squink, the cave was considerably dark... probably too much to see anything clearly, but she could hear and somewhat notice the form of Oden in front of her, whom she tried her best to stick with.
"A-are you able to see, a-anything at all? H-how easy do you think it is to see glowing fungi, b-because everything is just... u-uhm, v-very... very... v-very, dark... " Squink muttered as she felt herself shivering from fear, lightly trying to reach out and ever so gently grasp onto the plumage of Oden's arms like a child trying to not get lost.

Oden however would be able to peer into the darkness fine, the sight of rough yet quite spacious cave interior for a little moment was the only notable details. With a few cracks and crumbles in the floor, it would feel rather easy for someone to accidentally trip over or hurt themselves, but with Oden's progression taking forth meant that the two were a lot safer from accidentally getting boo-boos due to floor hazards. Though it would only take a matter of time before the very dim light of the night-time outdoors that made the entrance evident would dim and be blocked by rocks and slight turns within the cave confines, most notably a lack of anything luminescent whatsoever.

"I-I don't see... anything still... m-m-maybe, w-we should turn around?... I-if you think so... " Squink softly muttered, though by this point, Oden would finally start noticing things that weren't simply rock and stone. Scratches and claw marks would be occasionally scattered and marked around the cave surfaces, on the walls, floor and ceiling. They didn't run deep at all, but it obviously wasn't some cosmetically painted fashion choice to make the cave look like a rugged, strong, independent, pretty princess. A few tools and objects aligned the edges of the cave... tools for torches, lamps, lamp oil, boots and gloves, and even what felt like a random few dropped bits and pieces scattered. The occasional coin, glass shard, or even some lost key or ring.

Then, rather unnaturally seeping out of a crack in the wall, Oden would be able to notice a squiggly black humanoid figure. It wasn't big, but it still looked 2 to 3 foot tall. 'Squiggly' was an understatement, it moved occasionally yet in an erratic and quick fashion, the visibility of its' body jittered and quivered in form like a character model from a PlayStation 1 game. Squink however, wouldn't be able to notice this, or the few others that seemed to make their way out of cracks, having no visible faces or features. Though they all were at least sticking to the ceilings and walls, keeping to themselves... except for one that had managed to crawl out of the floor almost directly under then.

Oden would be fine with avoiding it, but Squink would end up stepping directly on it.
"Ew, ew- what's that- what's that- ew- ew-" Squink immediately panicked, tightening her hold on Oden as she nervously moved over from her. The one she had managed to step on would immediately flip its' head 360, of which in the response of one of the impish, demonic looking creatures being stepped on, ALL of them would follow suit and flip their gaze to them. A soft, quiet chittering as Oden would notice the bioluminescent devious grins of such creatures looking towards them, with small erratic movements looking as if they were ready to dismount the wall as every one of them kept eyes on the two. The one Squink had stepped on retreated back into the crack of the floor almost instantly. Though, all Squink was able to see was a lot more terrifying to her.
1735915967049.png
Being greeted with only the soft, intimidating chitters that felt more like devious jests and laughs at her, the ilithid stared back at the abyss. And much to her infinite horror, she could only quiver and hold still in what felt like paralysing fear as the abyss stared back. And it smiled, and laughed, and so did all of its' friends. Even though their situation was likely dangerous, the way back looked coated in darkness... oddly enough, to Oden too, who would notice what looked like a veil of conjured darkness. Though even though her mind capabilities might held, Squink was a bit too paralyzed in terror to react at all, only murmuring the tiniest whimper as she was clearly shaking for dear life.

"Ah, due to my heritage I can see in the dark rather well," the old owl perked up in response, having briefly forgotten the matter of dark vision not being universal. She thought to herself that Squink could've crafted a makeshift torch or waited for her to scout it out, but, well, she supposed it was a bit late now as they continued to trot forward. She didn't mind Squink's cautious grip on her arm. Rather, she wouldn't lie that she felt a little emboldened by it: rejuvenated with courage. It had been a long time, but the feeling of being relied upon or needed, was nice to feel again.

"I imagine your lack of night vision would make any glowing stand out more, so I'm relying on you too," Oden patted the squishy hand on her more feathery arm, subconsciously smiling and thinking to return the favour. Her wrinkly gaze roamed as scars, marks, tools and items gradually made their presence known, her speed slowing slowly. "This doesn't look like sacred ground, that's for sure," She muttered quietly, agreeing with the notion of turning back before the first sight of movement caught her eye.

Immediately, Oden began stepping backwards, carefully pulling and guiding Squink behind her, even as the scene before them grew more and more horrific. "Seems we should just report back and request a guide. Let's go dear," the old lady owl smiled and tried to keep her voice steady, though it subtly shook and was a little higher pitch than usual. Subconsciously, she puffed her feathers up warily, making herself seem bigger and tougher with her wide amber eyes staring back into the dark. "But don't run. Stay with me," she stated, managing to even her voice out.

Fear and adrenaline were somewhat clouding her judgement. Perhaps she should stay and investigate more into what seemed like a horrific illusion or trick if she could've thought more rationally. But she just wasn't having it.

"Keep hold of me. I will draw my bow. Just in case." Oden stated calmly, reaching behind her for the comforting, familiar feel of her old bow and drawing it forward without mercy.

Even if Oden wanted to rely on Squink to spot glowing fungi due to the owl's darkvision, she was a bit too caught up on being locked up by her feelings of fear. Though, feeling the touch of her feathered companion upon her hand and freed herself from her mental suffering for just a small moment. Nervously looking to and listening to Oden, yet unable to withhold herself from shaking from the fear she was experiencing, she just quietly nodded and tried to listen to what Oden said.

"O-okay... " she murmured quietly, all confidence in her efforts completely gone as she had no idea how to handle their situation. She wasn't thinking on releasing her hold on the owlkin anytime soon, just lightly nodding and continuing to whilst they had drawn their bow.
"I-I-I... d-don't know... w-what this is... " the ilithid muttered, feeling herself stutter and trip over her words constantly unsure if they had accidentally stepped into severe danger or if it was supposed to happen, but she wasn't too keen to find out which. Turning to face behind her, she expected to not see anything due to her hindered sight, but Squink would notice a vague red glow in the dark. The red light was split, giving the visage of multiple lined up alien-like eyes peering through the dark, though whatever they were part of was another tall and slender ghastly entity. Its' body seeped and spilled darkness into the path they came from, filling void in the travelled passageway that not even Oden's Darkvision could peer through as if the way they had came was sealed by some demonic capability. The ilithid would, for a moment, only be able to make out its' crimson luminescence whilst Oden would still be able to see the full figure of its' slender yet unnatural self. Once it twisted and tilted its' head a little in the direction of the two, the red glow strengthened within itself and made it visible even to the squishy ilithid, who could notice it from the vibrant red seeping through the cracks in its' rather strange rotted-like flesh.
1736356478423.png
Even as it gently repositioned its' feet, it didn't even make a single sound. Not a breath or anything, inspecting the two travellers as the impish creatures that grinned continued their tiny, gravelly background giggles. Squink shook heavily, tightly grasping onto Oden as she panicked and immediately relied on a misdirected attempt at using her telekinetic capabilities do do literately anything. Having ended up targetting a cluster of rocks that formed part of the ceiling, trying her best to do anything and using her mental might on wiggling the roof rocks.

To move... a roof? Of course she couldn't do it, but she didn't imagine herself able to use her power on it, and couldn't see anything in the dark, but could vaguely guess there had to be something somewhere. The shadow coming off of it must've been stopping at some surface. But ending up loosening part of it that was needed for its' stability? That was plausible, which would result as trying to protect herself with ceiling rocks would cause a loud crack and crumble, with the pathway behind them having its' cavern ceiling come crashing down upon the shadowy creature. Squink was so startled by her own action she bumped into Oden and softly uttered a short scream.

"S-sorry, it was a-an accident-" she struggled, the strange creature flailing and scratching as its' head and arms remained outside of the rock romb confines. It looked like it was opening its' mouth, which split into three jaws opening its' maw in a triangular fashion, but not a single sound came from the beast when it looked like it should've been shrieking. The impish creatures immediately twitched their heads and flung themselves forward at the two, bearing what looked like the silhouettes of sharp claws upon the end of their fingers. Though, without the ability to clearly see well, it felt like she wouldn't be able to give as much assistance to the other matter as she grew heavily hesitant at the sight of the rushing impish creatures. At this point, it was hard to count them, but they clearly weren't happy... even if they were widely grinning. They'd have to do something before being jumped on by the swarm of strange cave-dwelling creatures, but the larger specimen had been imprisoned for now, though with a freed mouth and flailing arms, they'd still be in danger of it if they were to back up the way they came.

"W-what do we do, I-I can't see a thing to do anything well-" Squink asked, shaking with a shuddering voice like she was about to cry.

For her sensitive, owlish ears, the constant giggling was especially maddening: a cacophony that served to welcome the new beast that glowed crimson behind them. With tension stretched taut, it was hearing the mumbles of the ilithid behind her, seemingly casting a spell in her panic, that made Oden's focus briefly falter in shock.

Not a moment later, the sudden, violent rumbles of the cavern roof led to an inescapable flashback for the old owl. A chasing thunderstorm. The darkness and the rats. The drugs and the screams. The fire. Squinting slightly, she flared her feathers to will the memory away, turning her ears back to Squink as she spoke. Though unable to free a hand to comfort her, her bow still steadily drawn towards the closest imp, she reassured quickly, "It's fine. We're both fine. Miraculously." Her tone was as soothing as she could muster, well-trained after decades of working with children, whilst the dust and her mind settled.

As the imps pounced, Oden did not hesitate, letting loose her readied arrow immediately, both to kill and to deter [Quickfire F]. This was no time to wait around. Who knew if more lurked within the walls around them. They had to do something. But with the way back completely blocked off, it seemed pure violence was the only option. Clicking her tongue, she turned swiftly, amber eyes shining calmly in the dark as she drew and shot a feathered arrow directly into the larger, flailing monstrosity's mouth in one fluid motion.

Immediately after, her wings flared in the limited space, drawing short gusts of wind as she grabbed Squink and lightly jumped/soared back closer towards the collapsed ceiling, but slightly more off to the right [Feathered Raze E]. Even if it was a threat, this crushed demon was their greatest light source at the moment, and for the ilithid, she would benefit from any light she could get. She couldn't tell how much the seeming reddish glows would help her, but at least it was something. And having their backs against the wall was better than being surrounded. At least for all the current enemies she could see.

Squink felt herself pulled back all of a sudden, quickly twitching her head to see it had been Oden retreating her a little bit back to what seemed like a safer location. Fidgeting as she leaned away from the monseer that had still been trapped in the rubble, it visibly made soundless bellows as the vibrations within its' flesh whenever it opened its' maw to attempt to scream or roar were made visible, much clearer when closer. Though, despite its' spindly long arms, it was just barely out of reach to grasp at the two as the ilithid and owlkin to it were ever so temptatiously close yet still just out of reach.
"T-this is safe?.. " Squink hesitantly murmured, willing to trust Oden yet reluctant to trust their safety from the reach of the weird monster beside them. It appeared stuck enough for the moment, but it clearly wasn't happy to sit in contempt with being trapped under rocks.

As for the matter of Oden's released arrows, it would appear as if the impish creatures didn't have any conceived thoughts to try dodging an incoming attach despite their capability for such erratic movements and quick agility. The first imp would immediately be struck, except with what one would imagine from an arrow striking a normal target, it burst and fired directly through it. As for the imp that was just pierced with a whole arrow, it would visibly swell in a spiky fashion for a split second before popping like a violent balloon with bright white luminescent 'blood' being splattered around. Well, it didn't look anything like blood or smell of anything from where they were stood, but it's how it looked when the impish creature popped and spread it like a pinata. The arrow would manage to continue, managing to somehow strike another much further back in the cave directly in its' shoulder, a small splash and seep of the same viscous bright white glowing goop having leaked from the hit location.

The deterrent would work decently well, as the impish demonic creatures would stop their advance for a moment... though it may have unintentionally come from the creature they had positioned themselves near to. Plus, Oden's decision to fire an arrow directly into the mouth of the larger monster blatantly wasn't enough to put it down... but it was enough to profusely anger it. Its' mouth pried open further than before, still split in three ways, though the illumination within it grew bright enough to reveal the cave in front of them in a deep-red glow. The ilithid, being able to notice the figure of the grinning creatures for a moment, would find it too slow to make a decision as the larger monster clearly wasn't settled with being a convenient lightbulb. Three bright crimson tendrils would slowly seep from its' mouth, as the the ilithid and owlkin would be able to hear what sounded like the sound of rushing wind being pulled towards its' mouth. That same white 'blood' splatter would be peeled off any surfaces and absorbed into the creature's awaiting maw, as clearly the impish creatures had scattered backwards in their attempt to avoid being pulled in. It was perhaps convenient that it couldn't turn its' head enough to encompass them too, getting in a blindspot for the creature proved advantageous for this moment.

Unfortunately, one that would have been impeded a little by being shot in the shoulder by Oden's earlier loose arrow would make a small slip, desperately attempting to grasp on and tightly gripping a floor with its' hands and feet. Though, clearly the abrupt grabbing was the worst thing it could've done, as Oden and Squink would simply watch the arrow-wound in the shoulder rip open from the pulling force as the entirety of its' glowing white insides would be aggressively ripped out and consumed by the rubble-trapped creature. The leftover husk of an imp would fall flat, before seemingly dissolving and fizzling from existence. This only made the ilithid all the more terrified, even if she could see. Maybe it would've been better if she didn't have to see that.

It had managed to pull three more within its' waiting mouth, any imps still kept together from the force would be grabbed and unforgivingly dismantled by the waiting mouth tendrils. Though the imps were clearly receding deeper into the cave or back into the crevices they crawled out from, the red glow from the creature would only grow brighter, as what looked like white veins would now briefly run down its' body. The mouth would close, its' strange pulling attack ended. And for a moment, its' hand would lunge closer for the two than it had managed to do before, of which Squink panicked and muttered a soft scream, pushing Oden forward so the both could get away from it.

"U-uhm, do we, c-can we kill it? I-I don't, this is- I can't do this-" Squink muttered as she began hyperventilating, breathing heavy as she grasped onto Oden. She wasn't fit for this, why was she here? What stupid 'entry task' was this supposed to be, were they TRYING to get them killed? Was this how they kept visitors out of their private community, sending them to their death? A for how it managed to get its' reach close enough, the size of its' limbs had strangely increased... which would become apparent when the glowing white veins would be more apparent, and the body of the creature would clearly boil and bubble a little as it grew in size. Not by a whole not, but clearly enough to start loosing the rubble prison free.

Squink, better blessed with sight now that the cave was illuminated (though not for a great reason), would start using her mind to pick up rocks and rather rudely drop them on the enraged monster to hurt it, and hopefully slow it down from being freed.

"U-uhm, do we, f-fight this, we could try r-run, the weird smiling things are gone... " Squink would nervously ask, her eyes pretty much watering from being on the verge of tears as she looked to Oden for advice and experienced leadership.

Oden's first thought at the sight of the flashy, pearl-white luminescence being spilled across the cavern walls was quite simply: 'Squink could see better if I wounded more of them.' But, before she could proceed on that morbid thought line however, the world glowed red, as the old owl shielded her ilithid companion with her free wing as that horrific vortex was opened. Monsters lived horrific lives, the true depths of which even she feared being privy to. But somehow, if subtly, that thought rather calmed her, thinking the sight of something eating another was really not that bad in the grand scheme of things.

Tightly squeezing her panicking friend's shoulder, Oden fluffed her feathers up to warmly wrap around the ilithid's back in a soft, if frail-feeling, cocoon. "My dear, don't worry. I won't let anything happen to you." Her tone was low yet light, as if merely stating a fact, "Stay behind me, and just do whatever you feel you can manage." Calmness and confidence were often reassuring in the face of adversary, and Oden knew that deeply. But that did not stop the subtle shaking of her own hands, as her cavern trauma had by now run far too deeply to be ignored.

"I do not like the idea of leaving a threat in a possibly enclosed space with us. So if we can, I'd like to slay or otherwise completely immobilize that thing first," Oden's gaze flickered as she spoke, returning her hands and priming her old bow with a fresh arrow, "But I do believe we both fare better from range. Would be good to get a gauge on what area we have to kite with." She added, thoughtfully considering she was an archer, and Squink a mage, as she spared a moment to peer into the space deeper inside the cavern and trot forward with Squink kept close for protection [Scout F].

"Afterwards, if you can, I'd like it if you could try to lift a portion of those rocks out of the way, just enough to squeeze through at least, so we can return from whence we came. At least then, we'd have a sure route back to the surface." The old owl requested lightly, unsure of both how precise Squink's current magic capabilities could be, and whether she was in the mindset for it. Oden had been in far too many endless, world-altering caverns as of late. That underground city of ratkin in Ryke, and that surreal, dream-like expanse beside Clockhaven just recently. If they always just led to more and more madness the deeper ventured in, she would rather just turn back.

As much as she would love to tackle her trauma and find those simple, peaceful caverns again, time and time again they seemed to only beat her down with brand new horrifying sights every time. It was tiring. She couldn't help but wonder if the world was telling her: she was destined to meet the end of her long life in one of these one day.

Lightly drawing her bow amidst her brief scout ahead, she turned to fire a single arrow at the beast from afar, one far more lethal than any she had sent previously, aiming to pierce through that pelted monster's skull through its leftmost eyeball. At this heightened range, if the creature still lived, even if more tongues emerged from that thing's maw, surely they'd at least have a greater reaction window.

Actions:
  • (1&2) [Scout F]
    • Heightened Sense F [Hearing][Sight], Feature [Darkvision], Feature [270° Head Rotation]
    • Oden slowly focuses in on her animalistic senses, examining the darkness ahead of her whilst moving forward (30ft).
  • (3) Silence C (Precision B, Bow C, but -1 effectiveness due to not aiming)
    • Fighting Style [Kyudo of the White Dawn] [Bow] C, Range Technique Core C (1,000ft), Accurate Technique Core C (Target Spd - 4)
    • Oden focuses intently, putting her all into a single arrow. This seemingly ordinary arrow is near undodgable, able to streak across vast distances inescapably towards its target.

Squink looked to Oden as her companion gave her words of reassurance, not entirely confident due to their situation but truly hoping and putting faith that Oden knew what they were doing.
"O-okay, I'll try my best to help... " the ilithid nodded, aware of the threat and danger that was present if they didn't treat the situation with severe caution. She felt that it was nice that despite their considerable life-or-death situation in a location all alone that they were completely alien to, Oden was still taking some time out of her own day to grant Squink some kind words of encouragement and confidence. Though, she'd look to try and do whatever she could when the opportunity presented itself to her.

Oden's scouting sight would (obviously) be able to get a good look ahead of her with ease, the darkness being naught but an idea and concept for the darkvision-possessing beastkin. Ahead of them, any impish creatures or other opposition appeared out of the way and nowhere to be found, only the direction of more cave ahead of them awaited. Though, the cavern looked like it got a little wider further on, with lesser scratches and markings upon the surfaces of the walls and such. There was also clearly a few more tiny drops of past adventurer evidence, a few coins, a small shoddy dagger, the likes. Unfortunately for the matter of 'kiting' the creature, its' strange shift in size looked as if it could perhaps give it easy reach from wall to wall, so just trying to pass it at this point would either need removal of its' existence or better hinderance upon it.

"O-okay, maybe going back is a smarter idea... " she'd murmur as her tentacles lightly quivered, looking to the illuminated but enraged creature that was attempting to pry rocks off of itself slowly, it was in fact making progress on freeing itself by now.

Oden's undodgable arrow would be otherwise very overkill with its' speed, considering her target couldn't exactly move anywhere to begin with, but would very much find its' mark as it made its' way directly into the eyehole of the monster and wedged itself deep. At first, the creature's movement freezing up and the sound of a viscous audible popping noise sounded like it could have been a good sign, though soon enough a thick dark-grey paste would slowly ooze little by little out of its' mouth as the rage it possessed only grew further.

"T-that's still not it? I-I thought that it'd be done by that, d-does it even die? Is it immortal?" Squink nervously asked, unaware if the concept of immortal beings such as this could truly exist amongst them, or if it really proved that durable. Then, the creature had showed its' retort, starting to pick up pieces of rock and rubble that was keeping it encased with its' long arms and using some very obvious manner of [Superstrength] to utilise it as a ranged weapon against its' distant foes. And it did not do it lightly.

Just as Oden would utilise their exceptional attack, apparently the capability this random monster possessed was aware it could do the same, having rocks and rumble in hands as it launched them at an aggressively fast travel time... too fast to react to without expecting it, for that matter. Both Squink and Oden would probably feel a pretty rough pain from the sudden impact of hard cave-rock being pelted directly into their body, with no armour to protect either of them (1 Damage to Both).

Squink, clutching her body, was feeling said confidence and trust wane a little again. Regretting that she had a better reaction time to have perhaps stopped them, she kept it in mind for the next time she saw it happen.
"S-sorry, I should've been... r-ready for that, that was my fault... I-I'll try again next time... " she uttered softly, feeling like she just had all the air knocked out of her. It hurt real bad, even if she had pretty much never taken a hit in her entire life, she full well understood the consequences now. And was only more afraid.

"I-I don't know about this O-Oden, maybe we should just... k-keep going, and try to keep it from following, this feels more dangerous for us, t-though I can maybe stop or drop rocks on it again... though pulling down too many might also trap us... " she uttered, looking to Oden once more for wise guidance on what to do in such a moment. Meanwhile, she'd do her best to use her powers to keep putting rocks back or trying to take them from the creature's grasp, just to give them more time.

With her strongest strike failing to make a dent, and pelted rocks immediately cutting through her frail feathers, a quiet but all-consuming emotion slowly washed over her, all too familiarly. Despair. It was like a part of her crumbled with every dagger that dug into her skin, dying those silvery feathers of hers red.

The third time. This was the third time. A part of her couldn't believe this was happening again. It was a cruel joke really. Was it her punishment to be stuck enduring such terrible caverns again and again? She wouldn't let herself blame Squink for panicking and blocking them in, but... why did nothing ever go the way she wanted it to?

Closing her eyes, she replied with the simplest of affirmations.

"Fine."

Against her will, her vision burned and clouded, but still the old owl remained as decisive as ever. Continuing to move, she heightened all her senses and scouted ahead, staying rational in ensuring their safety before doing the same as previously: firing an arrow backwards before grabbing Squink and pulling her forward. Trotting onward a few steps upon landing, she took the opportunity to wipe away the warmth of her eyes under the cloak of darkness, gradually becoming accustomed to their stinging despite the slightly reddened hues around their edges.

It was unlike her to cry. She knew she should be comforting and applauding her companion right now, as usual. But she couldn't. It was like the words were stuck on the tip of her tongue. She would open her beak as if to say something, before gently averting her gaze and merely continuing to lead the way forward.

It would be fine. She's endured worse hasn't she? Once again, she'd walk through this insufferable darkness alone.
