Fantasy Second Frontier

Voltsung

Master of being an amateur
What is out there? This is the question that separates man from beast. What is past that wall? What lies beyond the horizon? Beyond the sky and the stars? Humanity constantly seeks answers; that is their blessing and their curse.

Perhaps that is what ultimately drove them to their doom. Some scholars suggest that they disappeared in a flash of light and fire that cleansed the earth. Others claim that some virus stole their lives. A few fanatics even suggested that they ascended beyond our world. All we know about them come from the artifacts they left behind; the automatons that stalk the depths of their ruins, arms that shoot molten steel, and of course the Iaragus.

They are devices of strange and unknowable power which defy the ideas of man and laws of nature. Few have ever been found, but those that have made their way into legends. Spears that weave great firestorms, rings blessed by spirits, and cloaks made from wind are just a few among the wondrous Iaragus. With all of their advancements, why did they disappear? No one knows, but most agree that we evolved in the shape of them. We take the form of humans, though we lack their teachings. Perhaps that is why our scholars are so obsessed with them, and why our elders named us after them

We are the Newman. This world once belonged to the humans, but now it is our new frontier.

So, in short, the idea of this RP takes place on a post-apocalyptic planet Earth. While the nature of the disaster is unknown, the world seems to have mostly recovered. While magic exists in this world, "Newmans" cannot access it by themselves. Instead, magic is only controlled by some creatures and by artifacts called Iaragus.

There is going to be an overarching narrative, but the main goal of the RP is adventure and world-building. As such, I'm open to any suggestions. And questions; I know I was vague. Which was also kind of the point, so don't expect an answer to everything!

And I know what you're thinking. Newman do not look any different from humans, but they are different biologically.

Uh... not quite how it works. There's nothing wrong with it, but normally you don't post until the main thread is up and your character is accepted.

This is an interest check, which is just to see if anyone is interested in an idea and potentially discuss it more in detail.

After that, if there is enough interest, I'll create a set of threads that everyone can post on. Once these are up, you'll have to read the rules on the Rules thread for the RP, then go to the Character Outline thread and create a character sheet based on the template. Once you've made that, you wait until the RP's GM (me) accepts it, and then you can truely RP.

That being said, you definately seem to have a good sense of what the RP is and are quite good at writing. Honestly, I'm just happily surprised someone's interested after almost a week.

Ah, sorry about that! With the old forums I used to frequent, you just jumped in at will. D: I have deleted the post and will await further instructions!

What, no, you didn't have to xD It's not THAT formal, especially in the interest phase. But if you have any questions or ideas, now's the time. I have several ideas for the world already, but I'm holding off on them due to wanting to see what everyone else thinks and also partially because I'm lazy.

It's cool, I usually type on Word so I still have the intro handy for edits if it's still relevant once things get started. :D

Ok, then questions on my part:

1) Do the Newmans age like humans, or are they immortal? Do they have any weaknesses to particular diseases or, I dunno, poison oak or something? xD

2) What is their culture like? Do they lean more towards working with nature or are they on their own conquest for mechanization and development?

3) ^Pertaining to the above, where are they right now in terms of development? Do they hunt and gather, farm, raise livestock, etc?

I'll probably think of more, but those are at the top of my list.

Oooh question time? Yay!

Then :

What is the current world like besides having the remains of the human civilization. What is the climate like, the landscape, the continents and yada yada. What creatures remain?

1) Newmans age at a similar rate as humans, though due to the dangers of the new world, older Newmans are quite rare. The average life span is about 60 years, but theoretically a Newman could live a century, potentially more. Their only weakness, outside of anything a human might have, is the biological difference I've been talking about. Which I am NOT covering right now, because I need to keep something up my sleeve.

2) Depends on the area and group of people. There are Facist regimes, technology-worshiping tribes, more passive villages... it really depends. However, the town we'll be starting at is more nature-oriented, though they don't necessarily distrust technology.

3) Again, depends. People far away from old civilizations don't have much, while people who live near ruined cities have greater understanding They've gone past the point of agriculture, and larger governing bodies have started to take shape. That being said, there are still a lot of small villages or city-states. A lot of Newmans use surviving bits of old technology, even if they don't understand how they work; an old crane might be used as an elevator, using a chained up car as a counterweight. While some guns still exist, good luck finding ammunition... though some more technical-minded civilizations have started making their own firearms. Cannons, flintlocks, and whatnot.

4) The sea level has risen quite a bit since humans lived on the planet, though it has gone down in their absence; some places are partially submerged, while tectonic activity has actually caused land to rise out of the water. We aren't at Pangea Ultima yet, but some stuff has changed. Many animals have evolved/mutated; while a lot of them are very similar to the animals we know today, they possess a biological difference that all creatures on this world share, Newmans included. Just don't be surprised if your family goat only has 1 horn, or your dog doesn't belong to any breed you know today. Additionally, some creatures are far less mundane. Yes, there are Monsters out in the wilderness; beasts with huge claws, who stand as tall as a building, ready to kill at a moment's notice. Some even have abilities that so worldly science could explain... if you believe the drunks.

Heheh, thanks. But yah, expect things like swords and spears if you're thinking weapons.

First of all I would like to say I love this idea, it sounds like something I would love to get behind.

Secondly I have a question referring to the quote above it states that magic is in the world but is only accessible to Newmans via Iaragus now I was wondering what type of shapes are these Iaragus do they take the form of pieces of clothing, weapons etc or smaller objects such as stones that may be embedded into clothing and also what types of magic are in the world.

Iaragus take a number of different forms, ranging from actual weapons such as spears or guns to pieces of clothing or jewelry. They don't take the forms of stones or jewels however, though many of them do have a gem-like mass located somewhere on them.

As for what types... use your imagination. You can't manipulate time or space with it, but you can create fire, freeze things, conjure objects... but every Iaragus has ONE function. However, some creativity can make that one function go a long way. Some scholars have even noted that they work slightly differently depending on who's wielding it.

Though, for the sake of keeping magic a rare and mysterious force, I am thinking about making it so you cannot start with an Iaragus. Because, let's be real here; if I tell you you can come into a world with all these monsters, and say you can either take a magical artifact or nothing at all, everyone's going to be running around with an Iaragus.

I'm quite interested in this, though I'm not sure how I'll fit myself in...eh, maybe I'll start a cult over a clown picture. But seriously, I'm interested.

Wow, back from the dead then. Alright, with this many people, I'll start working on a main thread. Ya'll just... figure out what kind of character you want, or ask questions, or whatever. I'm busy the next couple days, so don't expect anything until Wednesday or Thursday.

I'm In. keep me updated if you dont mind

Nice. Alright, so I have the basics done for the RP; not as painful as I thought it was going to be. Don't have my character made yet, but whatever. There's some new info in the overview as well, just introducing the area where everyone is starting. Feel free to start making your characters.
