Backstory:
The Taylor family has a long history of military service with many of them going on to become distinguished officers. However that dedication meant many of the children of the Taylor family were often made into orphans at some point in their lives. This unfortunate family tradition continued for decades, until the Rifts came about. Florian's father, Charles, died in the first waves of the aberrant attacks when a rift opened near their home one night. Florian and his mother, Violet, escaped the rift site but Florian's did so with a shattered knee and a punctured lung. It was only thanks to his mother's position in the military that he was able to receive the life saving care that he needed..

Because of his injuries Florian was always seen as being unfit for combat so his mother trained him instead in military tactics and strategy. Or she tried too. Without a reliable parent present in his life, Florian failed to meet his mother's lofty expectations. The other military families had looked to the Taylor's with respect, but Florian was becoming a stain on the family name. Violet felt she had no choice and was prepared to take drastic measure to send Florian away with the hope that he might learn his lesson and grow to appreciate what he had. That wasn't a fate that Florian was ready to accept and in a last ditch effort to earn his mother's approval he registered himself for the Vanguard program.

Because of his health many expected Florian would fail to survive the procedure and his mother begged him not to take the risk. She'd already lost her husband and couldn't bare to lose her son as well, but despite the high probability of death, Florian had faith in his own strength. In his mind this was the only way to live up to his father's sacrifice, silence the naysayers and doubters, and also earn his mother's approval. Of course he was terrified that'd he'd die, but he also had a secret hope that the procedure might heal him. So he faced the rift with a steady heart. And he survived.

To everyone's surprise Florian survived the experiment and although it didn't heal him as he hoped it would, it did give him everything else he wished for. His mother of course was first to see him after the procedure and in that moment he knew she'd never feel shame towards him again. Then came the public, the other families who whispered behind their backs now were silent. As a member of the Vanguard, Florian used and honed his strategic knowledge to the benefit of his peers and humankind. His ice powers have made him a valuable asset in the fight against the rifts and the monsters that they create.

Weapon: A whip

Aspect Abilities: Cryokenesis - After testing he gained the ability to create and manipulate ice. Through this ability he is capable of creating various constructs such as weapons, shields, and filling the air with small particles of ice to lower the temperature in a small area.

Weakness:
  • Because of his health Florian is unable to use his powers for extended periods of time or in large bursts. His actions must be careful, methodical, and precise otherwise he'll over exert himself and risk falling unconscious.
  • The nature of Florian's power is such that his allies and even himself can be affected by it. Changing the temperature and such tricks put him at risk just as much as his enemy. And with colder air putting more strain on his breathing it is not somethin g he could sustain for long.

    Because of his disease, Yuzu normally has white bandages over his eyes, even so, he is able to walk around as though he can see right through them. Underneath the bandages, his eye color is abnormal due to how it is a mixture of all sorts of colors while in the center of it all, his pupils are shaped in that of a star and instead of being black, they are white. His skin tone is also very pale, while it is not completely white, it is devoid of much of its original fair color.

    Personality
    Even while his condition means he is expected to be seated in a wheelchair or in his hospital bed a majority of the time, rather than be upset or lose his touch with interacting with others, Yuzu is actually very kind. While he may not speak often nor be the type to openly go up to someone to speak with them, he is more than friendly enough that he would enjoy spending his time getting to know people and developing friendships however he can. Yuzu is the type of person to risk or give his own life to save a friend if needed. This would all be very difficult to believe when he is given a mission by the higher-ups, as during times of rest, he might be a gentle and kind individual, but during a mission, his demeanor changes to one of seriousness and almost cold. While he will still be the type to give up his own life to save his friends, if he is in a squad and those in his unit are strangers to him, he will not hesitate to let them perish for the sake of the mission.

Backstory: Comfort was a luxury that could barely be afforded to Hikari growing up. She knows nothing of her birth parents, being raised in an orphanage in a costal city with a bustling trade port. Though wealthy as the city was, the trade revenues made rarely say its way to benefit the poorest and impoverished districts of the city, which included the district where Hikari's orphanage was. With the alternative being to go throughout most of the day, if not the week or month, hungry, Hikari lived as a street urchin for most of her youth, getting by on whatever pocket change she could swipe off some passersby in the crowd or successfully beg for.

Hikari wasn't stealing and begging for just herself either, sharing some of the food she bought with her gains with some of the younger kids at the orphanage. Of course, living such a precarious lifestyle carried with it a lot of risk. While she was still a kid, there were countless times where she had run ins with the law when things didn't go her way, returning her to the orphanage with nothing more than stern warnings and reprimands from both the police and orphanage keepers. As she got older, she no longer had the luxury of relying on the excuse her childhood to shield her from more severe punishments, so she took it upon herself to learn how to fight, sparring with some of the people her age around the orphanage and further honing her skills whenever some thugs decided to start a street fight with her.

When the Rifts began appearing around the world and some Vanguard had been formed, Hikari barely paid any mind. Reality could tear all it wants, but if you're still starving it doesn't really matter either way if it does or doesn't. That was until one day where she travelled a little far out from the city to see the countryside with a few friends from the orphanage. Unbeknownst to the group, a rift had opened in a nearby village and a stray Aberrant from which spotted them. Of the 5 that ventured out that day, only 2 managed to return.

After the attack and seeing nothing to lose, Hikari volunteered herself to undergo the tests with the Rift, not really expecting the powers that be to actually choose her given her track record with her hometown's police but, to her surprise, they did. The electricity powers she gained after undergoing the experiment proved to be effective at dealing with the Rifts' monsters, but found to only be practical at close ranges at moderate intensity after many combat tests to see what the limits were to Hikari's powers until she started to cough up blood and pass out from the strain.

Weapon: Steel quarterstaff

Aspect Abilities: Electrokinesis - Hikari has the ability to manipulate electricity and generate moderate amounts of electricity on the surface of her skin. She often uses this ability in conjunction with the steel staff she wields to deliver her electrical attacks to Aberrants and Infernos in combat.

While she does have the ability to shock enemies from a distance using her electricity, that is not something she does beyond a dozen feet or so, as the instability of her electricity powers increases exponentially with the distance, becoming a dangerous hazard to friendlies around her as well as putting physical strain on her body. Her electrical output is limited for similar reasons as well, as creating too much electricity can pose great harm to both Hikari and her allies from misfires.

Aspect Abilities: Will of the Vanguard - A simple silver tinted force field that blocks physical as well as supernatural external trauma from attacks. It envelopes the shape of it's user's physical body and even extends to their apparel for layered protection. As long as this invisible shield (appearing briefly when hit is active. He will also gain superhuman strength strong enough to punch through thick wood doors with ease and sprint at impressive long lengths that would tire even a prime athlete.

Flaws: The shield is ever passively active but continuous and mighty attacks can remove the shield away from the user. Leaving them mortal like any other. It will take long for the shield to be raised again at full power. Their physical buffs will not be active at this state and aberrant attacks will be dangerous.

BACK STORY
Born in the southern provinces, far from the heavily populated areas like Eldralis, Garth was the third son of the Arcwright family, poor farm workers in service of a rich plantation owner. Part of a very large family, like most of the other families working the fields, the Arcwrights had been living in this part of Vaelora for many generations, perpetually stuck in the poorest class. As such they had been exploited by rich merchants who had left the city to live the pampered life of running a plantation.

While initially seen as just another child ready to work the fields, Garth would prove exceptional with his physical abilities, such as double-jointedness, amazing equilibrium and balance, and manual dexterity. These natural gifts caused Garth to develop a superiority complex, viewing himself as better than the other Arcwright children. Dreaming of leaving the plantation, Garth would get his chance to when a traveling circus stopped in the nearest town to where Garth lived.

Convincing his parents to spend some of what little money they had to go see the circus, Garth would approach the owner of the circus and request a job. Given his dexterity, Garth would be hired by the owner to train under the acrobats. Abruptly leaving his family behind, Garth would travel with the circus across Vaelora. After a few years of training, Garth would become a proper acrobat himself, soon reaching the status of one of the main draws of the circus. It seemed like Garth was on top of the world.

But he was ignorant to the troubles of the world around him, ignoring the rampant openings of rifts. By the time Garth was in his twenties, the owner of the circus was getting elderly, seemingly ready to retire. Garth viewed this as a chance for him to take over the circus, greatly increasing his wealth. But before Garth could act on his plans, a rift opened up not far from where the circus was performing. Before anyone was the wiser, aberrants overtook the performance, slaughtering many.

Garth himself would flee, leaving his fellow performers to be killed. By the time that a calm returned, the circus was in ruins, only a few people surviving. Feeling himself a coward, Garth would abandon any efforts to run the circus. With nowhere really to go, Garth considered heading back to the plantation, begging for his job back. But then something snapped in Garth, a need to not be a coward.

With this newfound determination, Garth would enlist in the Vanguard. Going through the exposure to the small rifts, Garth would be one of the lucky few who developed powers. In a cruel twist of fate, Garth would find himself working with plants again, as he now could control them. But gaining these powers was only one half of being a member of the Vanguard, as Garth also undertook combat training, becoming proficient with knives. Now Garth finally feels ready to fight the aberrants and infernos and defend Vaelora.​

WEAPONS

ASPECT ABILITIES
Chlorokinesis: Garth has gained the ability to develop a psychic connection to all plant life on Vaelora. By focusing on a particular nearby plant, Garth can make it rapidly grow and control its movements. He can do things like creating vines to ensnare enemies, create a wall of barbed plants, or grow a much needed medicinal herb.

The downside of this connection is that Garth’s mind can get overwhelmed when surrounded by a lot of vegetation. Also the more growth or movement that Garth causes, brings more stress and weakness to his body, which can leave him defenseless.​

ACROBAT
  • Acrobat: Garth is a professionally trained acrobat, having spent years working in a circus. As such he is very nimble, flexible, and steady. Using these skills, Garth can easily jump around and stay mobile while in combat.
  • Knife Fighting: Since joining the Vanguard, Garth has been in combat training. Focusing on his natural skills of dexterity and mobility, it was decided that Garth would train with dual knives. Now able to use them in close combat or by throwing them, Garth can hold his own up close or at range.

Seeing as he just up and left to join the Vanguard, these individuals are ready to call in Garth’s debt.​
