Or at least that was what the old Joshua Bateson acted like. Three weeks prior to his disappearance an uncanny metamorphosis occurred, which turned your beloved friend into a fleeting shadow of his former self. Josh became closed-in, unresponsive, refusing to be touched by the light of day or to even gaze upon his close friends. He was psychotic, yet not in a violent way but rather passively disintegrating, accepting his fate. The previously radiating man had turned into a complete stranger, who did nothing but sulk, weep and mumble unintelligible chatter as he threw all of his possessions out and suffocated on the smoke emitting from his cigarettes.

Joshua was born to a couple, who, despite being the nicest and most generous people ever, never had any financial stability. This, naturally, resulted in a rather shaky childhood, though the thing that saved young Josh from becoming a trouble kid and acting up due to his dysfunctional household were his friends.


Joshua had always been the popular type... at least initially due to the boy's rather good looks, yet many soon came to realize what kind of a person he actually was - an overly energetic air-head that adored doing awfully dangerous stunts just for the sake of it. Thus, many of his "admirers" would soon come to avoid the bubbly Josh who annoyed everyone with his cheerfulness and apparent naivety. The few who stuck around, though, he came to care exceptionally for, which in the end gave birth to his closest circle of friends - the people that helped him get through everyday struggles and issues.


He has always been greatly thankful to them as they supported him in all ways possible even when he was forced to begin working odd jobs to aid support his family. The tedious work that they involved always appeared lighter after some time spent in the Joint.


Basically, his buddies never failed in making the tediousness of life go away... Unfortunately, they were unable to protect him from the rather "extraordinary" side of existence...

  Elijah is a rather tall, looming man standing at 6'3 (1.95 m) with a broad frame to scare off others, whose reaction to his appearance is only furthered by his facial features. His visage is adorned by two dark eyes that give off a sense of aggressiveness toward the world, made even more prominent and menacing by bushy eyebrows that seem to be permanently furrowed and judging all, as is the straight line of his lips, showing off no signs of emotion apart from dislike and the occasional cynicism. Truly, Elijah rarely if ever expresses such feelings as happiness or fear, instead preferring to trouble others with his apparent apathy, broken only by the curling of his mouth-corners in case of some dark-humored remark.
  
  
  Basically, Elijah is anything but welcoming, which is done completely purposefully on his part. Honestly, his opinion of strangers is not at all favorable and even negligent, which shows through in the way the man carries himself. His dark brown locks are tangled and knotted in places, resulting in a big heap of an unkempt mane, while his unnaturally and sickishly pale skin-tone is plastered with blemishes (most prominently 3 moles on the right side of his face) as well as scarred throughout in mysterious bruises and cuts that even Elijah doesn't know resulted from. The man doesn't even take any precautions to cover up said injuries, meaning that his otherwise decent appearance strays far away from the conventional understanding of handsomeness.

  To make his carelessness towards others' opinion of him even more painstakingly obvious serves Elijah's choice of clothing, which consists of an odd combination between formal and casual styles that don't really work too well together regardless of what he would like to believe. The man favors dressing up in plane T-shirts, old shirts and jeans (worn out, thus faded and torn in places), combined with blazers and fancy shoes. An additional article that barely fits into this mess is a particular brown bomber jacket layered on top of everything else. Due to a peculiar dislike towards accessories, gloves and shawls are as far as Elijah will ever go in this respect, as everything else feels uncomfortable and "heavy" to him. The same applies to any "equipment", with the sole exception being a pack of cigarettes constantly on his person and, as a result, a lighter - a very plain tiny thing that Josh gave him as a present on the day he introduced Elijah to the world of smoking.

  Elijah is the type of unconventional melancholic who engages in "deep" thought a little too often, staying away from other people and what the mass would view as right or wrong. This makes the man a very independent individual, who doesn't allow for anyone to take care of him, going to extremes such as refusing the essential aid of outsiders. This he does quite rudely usually, which makes him appear like an asshole... which he is. Elijah is a sarcastic pretentious douche who dislikes everyone and is very open about his view, expressing and exaggerating it whenever possible. The only group he watches his mouth around (at least more than usual) is his closets circle of friends, with whom he acts very carelessly, conversing only to making some out of place cynical remark. Despite his rather cold treatment even of those dearest to him, on the inside Elijah hides an unexpected side - that of unbreakable respect and loyalty. Sure, Nihil might not want to admit it in front of himself but he is protective over his buddies to the point of being willing to sacrifice his own well-being for them. Due to being generally understanding and thoughtful towards them in particular he was badly triggered by the powerlessness that he experienced in Joshua's case, in the end being unable to save arguably the one he cared most about.
  
  
  The whole unfortunate chain of occurrences lead to Elijah's characteristic pessimism worsening and mingling with apathy. By now the man is more like an absent-minded sleep-deprived version of his past self.

  "- Believe nothing, not even yourself"
  
  
  Being a self-described nihilist, Elijah's worldview is rather pessimistic. He pretty much follows the set of believes that life has no meaning and that everything comes to an ultimate end. It might be true that on the rare occasions when he is miraculously struck by some joy, Nihil will define himself as an existentialist aka "an optimistic nihilist", cheering up his friends through preaching that the meaning of life is to give it a meaning. Other than that, Elijah acts much like a self-righteous hipster, refusing and condemning all that is conventional, religious, socially ethical. This, naturally, makes for a depressing and mildly annoying personality, which the man acknowledges and is totally okay with. The fact that he has an enormous reserve of overdone quotes, which he puts to use regularly, doesn't better the situation in the least.
  
  
  Basically, Elijah believes in nothing. That's why he is having a hard time dealing with all the seemingly impossible occurrences progressively worsening around him. As a huge skeptic, the man is puzzled by the events that make his head ring in a painful pitch, as he tries his hardest to ignore them while common logic screams out that overlooking them is stupid

  Stargazing - in general Elijah is secretly awestruck by anything relating to the night sky, though he would never allow for anyone to witness this soft spot of his. There is simply something charmingly melancholic in the loneliness and stillness of night as one gazes towards the overwhelmingly huge cosmos, engulfed in thought
  
  
  Daydreaming - undoubtedly Elijah's favorite hobby, daydreaming is something the man waist an impressive amount of time on. By this age it's an automatic reaction of his to silence, which results in absent-mindedness and racing thoughts - something he fancies
  
  
  The Joint - despite Elijah's claims to only enjoy the group's hangout out of pure love for its abandoned beauty, the truth is that he simply cherishes his friends and wishes to be with them as much as possible. This rang especially true while Josh was around, though after his disappearance Elijah has refused to go near the old run down house

  Pretentiousness - as ironical as this seems, given the fact that Nihil is arguably one of the most pretentious people alive, the man finds himself unbearably irritated with those of the "special-snowflake" and elitist mentality
  
  
  Overthinking - getting lost inside his head might be one of the most enjoyable activities to Elijah, yet there is a point at which it becomes a pain, and one that can drive a person mad with anger or despair. Thus, as much as the man adores thinking, he loathes it even more
  
  
  Unnecessary Drama - Elijah detests any arguments, which applies the most when it comes down to needless drama. The man simply hates it when people start a row over something that can be easily overcome (at least in his own eyes), which however doesn't lead him to attempting to stop the fight but rather simply up and leaving. This is due to the fact that Nihil finds it pointless to waste his time on immature people and would much rather remain neutral as well as on his own

  "- I don't know what you're talking about. The only things I "fear" are hive mentality and the stupidity of some people"
  
  
  Dysmorphophobia - no one has ever been aware of this phobia of Elijah's, not even Josh. Basically, the man is chilled to the bone by any deformities. It isn't really that much a disgust towards them as is a fear of being mangled in some way. In fact, whenever faced with some unnatural and painful twisting of limbs, Elijah simply freezes in one spot and is unable to move, as if switching off reality entirely while focusing solely on the horrors before him
  
  
  The Unknown - as most human beings, Elijah fears what is a mystery to him, though he would rather not admit to this. Nevertheless, not having answers makes him both enraged and anxious. This is especially true to what, if anything, is going on in Coille Woods. The idea that something is lurking among the trees combined with shaky skepticism have plagued Nihil every day since the tragedy
  
  
  Losing Oneself - after observing Josh grumble, and faced with powerlessness when attempting to save his beast friend, Elijah has become horrified by even the notion of becoming a shell like Joshua did. The mere thought of falling a victim to insanity is enough to bring the usually emotionless man on the verge of tears

  "- My parents think I'm a failure. Well, it's their own fault for getting their hopes up"
  
  
  Elijah's childhood was a rather usual one as he was born the single child of a middle-class family. He pretty much went through what most boys in his position go through - the cliche early years when parents are a little too protective of their child and want a little too much from them, drunk on excitement. Maybe exactly due his ordinary prior existence Elijah made the choice as a young man to stray away from what he was taught - the conventional and the stereotypical - instead becoming a hermit hipster, living on his own in a messy rental flat that his parents were all but glad to help him out with originally. Naturally, wishing to be as independent as possible, he took on a part-time job of his own - that of an animal shelter worker. Not really the classiest thing, sure, but Elijah was always comforted by the thought of not having to interact with people too much (plus being surrounded by animals) as well as working together with Josh - someone who wasn't as lucky with his family financial situation as Elijah and had been engaged in odd jobs here and there for a long time.
  
  
  Actually, Elijah has recently realized that most of his milestones always involved Joshua to some extend or another. Josh is essentially the person who brought some color into Nihil's life - a thing Elijah is mostly grateful about, though he did use to jokingly say "If I could go back in time, I would make it so that we had never met" while laughing. Nowadays he only dares smile while reliving the best moments with his group of friends, yet only in his head since Elijah realized how much he cherished them after his greatest milestone - Josh's disappearance. It was painful watching this sun of a man die out as time went on, and then vanish into thin air before Nihil's own eyes. After all, Elijah was the one to witness his best friend walk somewhere deep into Coille Woods, and yet he still did nothing to stop this unnatural march, even though he knew deep inside that if he remained frozen this would be the last time he would ever see his dearest person... well, at least the last time he would see Josh alive.
  
  
  Elijah has still not forgiven himself for this horror that rendered him immobile in such a crucial moment. In spite of trying comfort himself by saying that his alternative actions would have changed nothing, there remains a small voice in the back of his head that reminds him of his guilt. Elijah doesn't exactly know what this voice is - his common sense, his subconscious, his moral? Or is it insanity?
  
  
  To put it simply, Elijah isn't handling Joshua's disappearance well at all as the man alternates between depression and paranoia induced by the notion that someone... something, might be stalking him. It all started with a vaguely humanoid shadow at his window... things escalated quickly...

  Joshua Bateson - "- The worst ever... Hate him..." - Elijah has known Josh ever since the two were 4 and simultaneously found out that their birthdays were on the same date. This, naturally, resulted in an arrangement among parents to hold one huge combined party, as well as a fight between the boys during the aforementioned celebration. Ensue years of a fierce rivalry that quickly transgressed into a friendly competition and long lasting bond. Basically, Elijah has been Josh's best friend for 14 glorious years. Thus, the man was extremely distressed after his buddy's disappearance, becoming even more closed-in than usual. After all, the bubbly Josh was gone now to force Elijah out of his house, which soon turned into a prison he enclosed himself into. These emotions of despair were only furthered by the fact that Elijah at one point or another harbored feelings for his best friend (his affection was unrequited)
  
  
  Ethan Price - "- Saint Ethan, the keeper of peace" - Josh was the one to originally introduce Ethan to Elijah, seeing as the two boys seemed to have some intermingling classes. Whether due to this or some other obscure reason, Nihil at first developed a deep-rooted resentment for Ethan, mainly given birth to by a fear (that he didn't realize himself at the time) of being replaced as Joshua's best friend. Ensue being unfriendly towards poor Arik (a nickname Elijah abused a lot...) and judgmental. This dislike was short-lived, however, as Elijah soon found himself taking a liking to the other boy as his more reserved behavior was a welcomed breath of fresh air to save everyone from the suffocating energy that Josh constantly radiated. In the end, Elijah accepted Ethan as one of his closer friends and an integral part of his dearest circle

  - Some peculiar mannerisms of Elijah's are biting his nails, furrowing his brows constantly as well as rubbing his chin. These he all does unconsciously, unlike laughing while sad. The former the man does to help suppress any unwanted emotions and keep his apathetic pretense going
  
  
  - Much to the man's dislike, his vocabulary is plagued by some parasitic words such as overusing "affect", "basically" and "literally". The worst of them all, however, is undoubtedly "dude" (something that enrages Elijah to no end as well as an aspect of his person he tries his best to change)
  
  
  - Elijah is a hopeless animal-lover (though he rarely acts out his soft spot for them). This is especially true when it comes down to dogs and specifically his own pet - a doberman by the name of Nietz (an homage to Friedrich Nietzsche), who has been his companion and protector for 3 years. Lately, however, the usually calm beast has been acting up during the night, some times howling in aggression at something unseen, while other times - cowering helplessly next to his owner while wimping. This odd behavior of Nietz is only worsening Elijah's already present concerns
  
  
  - Elijah has always been an air-headed daydreamer, yet lately the man has been spacing out even more. It's a daily routine to be talking to him and then slowly observe as he ceases listening halfway through and gets lost somewhere deep inside of his mindscape. Whether this is caused by his self-induced insomnia or simple negligence towards others, one thing is for sure - Elijah's focusing capability has dropped drastically. In reality, he has a lot more things to occupy himself with than listening to someone's small-talk
  
  
  - Mysterious bruises and scars are a very characteristic part of Elijah's appearance. The man isn't even embarrassed to show them off like some sort of feathers in his cap, yet lately he has taken to covering most up as they... are too shocking to see the light of day. Unnaturally long and deep as if inflicted purposefully, Elijah is being driven crazy by them since he should be able to remember where he got such painful injuries. The thing is he doesn't, and with every night spent peacefully sleeping a new huge gush appears on his torso. Elijah might be a skeptic, but one can't simply not wonder if the shadow previously on the other side of the window has made its way into one's home
  
  
  - Out of fear and paranoia, Elijah has taken to remaining wide awake all throughout the night. Sometimes this is a daunting task, which leaves him with the sole option to go out on a night walk throughout Arbington, which looks a lot like a ghost town out of someone's nightmare once the sun sets. However, the stillness and darkness are definitely preferred to the notion that someone... or something, has invaded your home, your safe haven. Also, dark circles are undoubtedly better than bizarre wounds

The length quickly seemed too clunky and it was shortened to Arik. It's mostly used in situations where friends want to poke fun at him or if they're trying to get him to talk more, and he's not bothered by it.

  Personality: Ethan is one to normally retreat to the background. Despite his less orthodox appearance, he tends to prefer to remain in the background, listening and absorbing without offering much to say in return unless directly addressed. His sisters often come and just talk and talk, as he's good at listening. However, if an issue is a passion of his, he can sometimes go overboard in his defense or argument for or against the topic in question. In general, though, he may not offer an opinion even if he feels like something should be done in one way and sometimes frustrates people with his tendency to just not pick a side unless pushed to or when he hides his preference without cause. He's a peacekeeper in situations where fights break out between others, his attempts to pacify the opponents usually successful if it's not too serious. Much of his quiet nature stems from a stutter he had as a young child that embarrassed him into silence. Even after a few years of intense speech therapy, which did correct his speech, it's become an ingrained habit to simply not talk much.
  
  
  Personal Philosophies: Ethan has moved away from his Catholic roots, having considered himself generally agnostic since he was around twelve or thirteen. Although he occasionally dabbles with various religions, he hasn't found one that stuck and has thus remained without an official religion to follow. His opinion is that although there is a small handful of morals that should be adhered to if only for the sake of not breaking laws, each person should be able to decide for themselves what is right or wrong rather than having it dictated by a god that may not be the "true one." His own set of individual morals is not terribly out of the ordinary and fairly common amongst teenagers and young adults, with wide acceptance of those breaking binaries.   History: Ethan lives with his formerly strict parents and two younger sisters. Although he grew up with a lot of rules, in his teenage years both parents started focusing more on their marital issues and work than their children and Ethan quickly grew exceedingly independent. Joshua was the one who pulled Ethan into this group of friends, and ever since he's been a part of them despite his relative quietness. Due to his mild interest in religion he's explored the rumored supernatural aspects of the town he grew up in, though his searches have not revealed much and he remains fairly unknowledgeable like most other citizens, though he does strongly believe these supernatural beings exist and aren't just legends. In the past two weeks after Joshua's disappearance, Ethan has started to let his appearance get a bit more unkempt as he's begun losing interest in a lot of the things he used to enjoy. He's receded into an even deeper silence as he harbors the idea that perhaps the supernatural creatures had something to do with this, though his self doubt is strong enough that he's not intending to announce this "ridiculous" theory anytime soon. He's also gained the bad habit of nicking some of his parents' liquor when he feels especially moody.

  Joshua Bateson - Ethan met Joshua in the fifth grade during a gym class.Despite being close to a year younger, they were in the same grade as Ethan had started early and therefore ended up in a number of classes together. Due to his asthma and reservedness, Ethan tended to be left for last or entirely without partners in group activities, and Joshua took the initiative to choose Ethan first one time. Touched by the gesture, Ethan opened up and willingly pursued a friendship with Josh. Josh was the one Ethan first told about a crush he had on another boy, was the main reason Ethan has felt more comfortable with his sexuality, and has been the one he shared the most with out of the group. Joshua's disappearance has hit him hard, most evident in Ethan's increasing forgetfulness in caring for himself physically and mentally.
  
  
  Elijah Hepburn - The relationship between Ethan and Elijah started out a bit shaky, with Ethan feeling much like an unwanted intruder in an already established friendship and Elijah certainly did not discourage that thought. However, with Josh's encouragement Ethan did stick around long enough for Elijah to warm up to him, and Ethan, having never verbalized his insecurities, went along with Nihil's somewhat friendlier attitude. As the years went on they developed a deeper friendship of their own, and Elijah is someone Ethan considers one of his closest friends.

  Appearance : Qiuyue possesses a slender, relatively short-heighted figure for most girls her age, standing at none other than 5'0''. One can tell just by looks alone that she is a fit individual, with significantly toned muscles and agile posture. With short, wavy raven hair and dark brown eyes, one can easily recognize her Asian heritage from her features. Pale with thin eyebrows, if someone were to ask if there is something that stands out aside from her stature is her so-called "baby face", thanks to her plump lips and round visage, which she cannot help but find rather distasteful, as it tends to lead people around her to not feel the least bit threatened by her anger at times, even if her glare is potentially terrifying to be witnessed, as well as the presence of three lined up beauty marks located on the corner of her left eye. Her hands, small as you might expect, are seen covered with band-aids from time to time, namely her fingers, which in reality all comes down to her hobbies, as well as how sensitive her skin is. Calm and serene would be the best words to describe her most common expression amongst others, revealing a wide range of emotions if pushed to do so. Most people find Qiuyue to be an unpredictable individual for that same reason... Sexy or beautiful are not exactly the words that come to mind when one looks at her, but if looked closely, you may find a certain beauty of her own, especially when, surprises of surprises, she smiles.
  
  Attire : Qiuyue is the kind of girl that goes her own pace and fashion is no exception for this. Mixing various styles, she has long created her own, while having only one rule to follow while combine outfits: comfort is the key. Mini skirts? Tight tops? Extremely high heels? Forget it. Albeit she does to vary from time to time, you will mostly see her in dark colours too. Scarves, shawls, berets, hats, rings, glasses, those are also a must for her, with simple designs that do not draw much attention to herself, instead giving her outfits a nice "vintage" touch. It is of notice that, as someone extremely sensitive to cold, she never gets out of her house without outerwear, even if in just her bag.
  
  Being slightly short-sighted, she also keeps a pair of what Joshua used to describe as her "hipster glasses", whom she would correct on a constant basis consequently. Although she was correct, it seemed to be his own "childish" way of teasing her.
  
  Despite not giving it away blatantly, Qiuyue is actually insecure regarding her own body, thinking of herself as too skinny, with no particular physically attractive features, hiding it away with her rigid and judgmental views on beauty and whatnot. As such, one will notice her tendency to avoid clothes that accentuate her feminine features or show too much skin, even in the Summer.

  Personality : Genuine would most certainly be the best word to describe the entity known as Qiuyue Zhan Xie. She what you call “an open book” kind of girl, having no qualms in expressing what’s on her mind and, even impulsively, shows to be transparent when it comes to both her emotions and intentions. This, of course, comes across as overwhelming for a lot of people, even to the point of intimidating and scaring them off. To Qiuyue, honesty is the best policy

  Fears : Qiuyue's fears come down to three prominent ones: aquaphobia, as she never got down to learn how to swim and would often be subjected by force to enter the water by her peers once the opportunity would come up, ending up nearly drowning if not for one certain person; genophobia, finding the act to be terrifying, given her difficulty at growing attached to others and sharing meaningful bonds with those around her and lastly, cleithrophobia, a fear that goes way back as she, being the free-spirit that she is, desperate at the feeling of being trapped inside something that she may never escape and having those few whom she cares for completely forget about her, suffering a long, insufferable death.

  Qiuyue has the misfortune of being target of animal enmity even as a child. She is actually fond of animals, especially dogs, but for some reason no animal seems to like her despite her efforts. It's another of the many things Joshua used to tease her about.
  
  
  She seems to never take off a ring Joshua gave her on her first birthday with him and the rest of the group, which is one of the subtle signs that she is still trying to cling to him despite what she says to theirs regarding his death.
  
  
  Qiuyue has shown to only curse in Chinese, as she feels ashamed of doing so in English duo to how "vulgar" she sounds.
  
  
  She has shown sign of possessing at least slight OCD, from an overwhelming need to align objects "just so" to excessive list making.
  
  
  Joshua started giving her swimming lessons on the beach, making quite the progress. After he was gone, she would got to the same spot on the sand they would stay after the lessons. The only difference is that she could not hear his laugh anymore...She still keeps this habit, although keeping it a secret from the group and with less frequency than the first days after his disappearance.
  
  
  Having taken her motorcycle license by the time she turned 17, Qiuyue from time to time gives her friends' a ride to school or other places whenever the opportunity comes up, in a Harley Davidson no less. She treasures it greatly, especially since it symbolizes for her the love she shares with her father for motorcycles and the good times they spent repairing many of them.
  
  
  Joshua was most likely the sole reason why she eventually took a liking to the nickname Nine, as he was the one who got it stuck to her after Yumi left the school.
  
  
  Having discovered her attraction to girls at the age of 13, Qiuyue was, needless to say, put into a stressful state regarding her preference, keeping it a secret from anyone, even to her family and friends. There is the possibility that Joshua or anyone else in the group was aware of it, unbeknownst to her...
