Schalig
SnLRoT3.jpg

A quaint little town, away from many eyes. Schalig wasn't all that popular to visit. Especially since certain rumors and stories spread around it and a couple more villages. Living beings started disappearing during the night. From cattle to residents of the area. Making most wanting to avoid leaving their homes at night.

The rumors theorized on whatever was causing this. Going from wild animals, to a curse set on the area, to what brought a certain individual to visit these parts. A mysterious church that experimented on people. Performing dark rituals and creating abominations of all sorts for unknown reasons.

It was a calm afternoon in Schalig. Gentle winds caressing the wild grass, clear skies that gave a beautiful sight of the nearby hills and mountains, and the inviting aroma of coffee permeating the air. Residents still going about their day. Chatting, playing games, or gathering on the local inn for a chat after finishing their tasks for the day.

Lythe was delighted by the lack of security in the little towns out in the sticks; it made it easy for him to walk around in broad daylight. He carried himself confidently as he made his way through the center of town, an unsettling smile adorned his face as his glowing blue eyes darted from person to person.

After weeks of chasing rumors and gossip he could feel it in his bones, he was close. He made his way toward the inn and pushed the doors open recklessly, causing them to slam against the walls behind them. He paused for a moment as all eyes were on him, basking in the attention before making his way over to an occupied table.

Lythe grabbed a free chair and sat with whomever was at the table he chose. He wasn't one to beat around the bush and instead preferred a more direct approach, his voice sounding like two different voices overlapping as he spoke. “I have heard rumors buzzing about this place. So tell me, is it true that there have been strange happenings of late?”

For an out of the way rural town like Schalig, having visitors was a rare occurrence. So having a visitor that looked as... peculiar as Lythe, made plenty of heads turn. Be it to stare, or to look away and avoid interaction.

This was more evident when he barged loudly into the small inn's tavern. But now inciting fear more than anything else. The two merchants that were at the table of his choice recoiled, intimidated. "Wha!?... Uh, um..." one stammered, while the other barely had it together enough to be understood "...N-... I don't know!" She panicked, looking around, finding solace in a local lumberjack. Sitting in an adjacent table, and slowly standing up and heading towards Lythe, not reaching for the axe he left at his table "I'd appreciate if you didn't scare my neighbors" His tone was severe "Come with me outside. Now."

Should Lythe comply, the muscular man would head outside, he would head to a side of the building. Without prying ears nearby, the lumberjack's stance relaxed to a certain extent. "So, what's with the attitude?" There was no mistaking it, the man was angry, though maybe not as much as Lythe would've expected.

Lythe let out a genuine chuckle as the two at the table stammered over one another, taking true joy in their discomfort. As the lumberjack approached him Lythe stood up from his chair and faced the man with his head cocked to the side. “Lead the way big guy.” He followed the lumberjack outside while mana crackled at his fingertips in preparation for a fight.

Once they rounded the corner and Lythe found himself being scolded for his lack of tact his expression changed to that of mild confusion. He tilted his head back and covered his eyes, not being able to stop himself from laughing in a deep haunting tone. After calming himself down and regaining his computer his glowing blue eyes settled on the man, the smile fading from his face as he took on a more serious tone. “Look buddy, you must be confused. I'm no bounty hunter. I'm here about the rumors in hopes of killing some false priests.”

Lythe raised his hand up and gathered a small ball at the end of each of his fingers, the glow casting deep shadows across his face. “So tell me what you know, unless you want to become minced meat.”

The lumberjack rose an eyebrow to the overly confident attitude of Lythe. He let it slide for now, choosing to simply lead him outside.

Once Lythe spoke so strongly about killing priests, all while showing very telling signs he wasn't well in the head, the lumberjack rested his hands to the sides of his body, preparing for the worse. Lo and behold, it got worse. As Lythe was now threatening his life.

Lythe's psychotic expression put the lumberjack off, but not enough to stand up for himself, not by a lot. With a lightning fast left hook to the chin, Lythe crumpled to the floor like a sack of potatoes.

Hours Later

The sun was setting, and its light started to dim as night was upon Schalig. Lythe would wake up, covered in a blanket. Sitting against the wall of the inn. "So, you're up." The lumberjack was sitting on a chair a few steps away from him. He stood up while groaning lightly "See those woods east of here? Deep in there, are some old castle ruins. When I do my thing around those parts late in the day, I've heard strange noises. That's all I know."

The lumberjack picked up the chair with one hand and the blanket with the other. And headed back into the inn. "Now get the hell out of here before I come back with my axe."

As Lythe awoke he grasped his jaw while shifting it side to side, his glowing blue eyes glaring at the lumberjack. “You better hope I find what I'm looking for, or I'll burn this town to ash.” He got to his feet as the man walked away and contemplated setting fire to the inn with everyone inside, but he got what he came for so he began to walk toward the Eastern woods with wounded pride and aching jaw.

As he stood at the edge of the woods the moon cast eerie shadows across the area, and an unnatural silence fell over the area. He made his way into the woods and followed what was probably a trail made by the lumberjack until he found himself standing in a clearing of felled trees. “Probably that lumberjacks work, must be heading in the right direction.”

He continued on until he could see ruined shadows in the distance, the castle that the lumberjack spoke of. Lythe kept himself hidden behind the trees surrounding the castle as he made his approach, unsure of what he would find.

Much as he expected, as night fell, the shadows surrounding him grew bigger and darker. Not only was it unsettlingly quiet, but Lythe could also sense eyes on him. As if something was lurking around him. Nothing stepped out to confront him at any moment, however. As he reached the clearing, and went beyond it, he would see the old ruins. Eroded and invaded by nature taking back what was hers.

h2GQWgp.jpg

Turns out, not openly approaching was a good call. Noises started to come from within the ruins. He would hear stone grinding on stone, then some sort of animal wail, and then stone grinding again. Two figures emerged from within the ruins, and stood near the border of it. They were talking. But from Lythe's current position he wasn't able to eavesdrop.

What he could tell, was that one of the figures was holding a weapon. A large axe which reflected the subtle moonlight with a red hue from fresh blood it had dripping off it. Much larger than the one the Schaligean owned and left back in the inn before "chatting" with him.

As he made his way closer he felt uneasy, but shrugged it off and crept ever closer to the ruins. As the two men came out he halted where he was and hunkered down, using his heightened sense of hearing to try and listen to what they were talking about, hoping to glean some useful information from their conversation before beginning his slaughter, a feeling of anticipation and excitement washing over him as he fantasized about the upcoming destruction he was about to bring down upon them.

Lythe waited for a while before coming out of the tree line and getting within range of the two men, mana crackling at his fingertips as he gathered it from his surroundings in preparation for attack. His smile grew wider as he cast his hand forward and sent a ball of mana to the feet of the two standing outside the ruins. “Time for you to feel the pain, filth." His eyes burned in the night as his mana erupted at their feet, engulfing the area around them in bright blue light.

The forest stopped its silent gazing on Lythe as quickly as it had started. Having lost whatever thing about him that caused it in the first place. Upon focusing his hearing on the two men, he was indeed able to pick up on their chat.

"...said, these idiots are so easy to pick. Most of the time they don't even put resistance."
"Well done anyway. Your contributions are appreciated."
"Of course, my brethren."
The two laughed cordially
"Will the next one be the last of the week, then?"
"Yes. We have more than enough living test subjects. I'm just going to replace the... rebellious one."
"Ah yes, may the gods enlighten the rest."
There was another brief pause
"Well, remember. Center, left, right, center, center."
"I will. Death is life."
"Life is eternal, friend."

They were so enthralled in their talk, that by the time they noticed Lythe, it was too late. The "clean" priest cried in agony and crumpled down, lifeless. His corpse steaming due to the mana overload. While the kidnapper ran away from the mana area, and towards Lythe. He groaned from pain and grief, and put that emotion into a wide swing of his halberd. And then produced a pellet from his garments, which he threw at Lythe. The pellet ripped apart, producing a small cloud of a dark dust.

Lythe cackled as the priest died and watched as the other closed the distance between them, swinging his halberd. Lythe ducked under the arc of the blade in an attempt to dodge the attack, but he hadn't anticipated a pellet of possible poison. He covered his nose and mouth with his hand and shut his eyes, stumbling backwards trying to escape the cloud of unknown substance. "Dirty trick, human."

Actions:
1. & 2. Attempt to dodge halberd.

3. Move backwards away from the cloud blindly.

The kidnapper groaned in extreme frustration, not managing to hit Lythe at all, not even with his pellet. "Stay still, you rat!" Completely ignoring Lythe's hypocritical comment.

He was far from giving up though.

He jumped towards Lythe, slamming his halberd down on his target, releasing more of the dark dust when he landed. Which he followed up with a horizontal slash and a thrusting strike.

Lythe cackled as he toyed with his prey, or at least that's how it felt from his perspective. He stepped to the side trying to avoid the downward slam of the halberd before ducking in an attempt to dodge the second swing, but allowing the thrust to strike him. "Rat, am I?" he taunted, his voice laced with a mocking edge. "And yet, here you are, flailing about like a child. Pathetic.”

As the thrusting attack made contact he raised his right hand and charged up wild mana, channeling it into the tips of his fingers before releasing five beams of mana that screeched through the air toward the mercenary. “Die, fool.”

Lythe's brave, or reckless, maneuver paid off. The church enforcer smiled when he stabbed Lythe. Seeing blood being drawn brought a sinister smile to his face, already preparing this rat to be used in the worst experiments occurring underground.

His joy was short lived, however. The point blank magic strike pierced and burned through his chest. Making him drop backwards. Blood was quick to damp his clothes and the nearby grass.

Kidnapper has been killed

Once the halberd wielder stopped breathing, silence took over the area again.

1735066158821.jpeg

Lyth stood amidst the aftermath of his skirmish, his breath steady despite the carnage around him and the wound he sustained. Two bodies lay crumpled on the ground, their lifeless eyes staring into the void. The dark mana radiating from him began to settle, the eerie glow in his veins dimming as he surveyed the scene with calculated precision.

“Pathetic,” he muttered, nudging one of the corpses with his boot. His voice was cold, devoid of sympathy or remorse. These fools had dared to stand in his way, and now they served a different purpose.

Kneeling beside the first body, Lyth’s fingers searched through the man’s belongings, his movements efficient and unhurried. Looking for anything that might be of use. After searching the halberd wielder he moved on to the priest, rifling through his clothes and pouches looking for anything useful. “Hopefully your death is more meaningful, trash.”

After searching thoroughly he stood and winced at the pain from his wound, tearing a piece of cloth from the priest's clothing and stuffing it into the puncture to quell any bleeding while his body healed.

h2GQWgp.jpg

Lythe's apathetic demeanor was met with silence, as no one was around to listen or see it.

Once he decided to loot the corpses, he came across a couple of things. The first body had a pouch with a few days of common work worth of Rykes, another pouch with a bunch of pellets similar to the one thrown at him moments ago, and a simple necklace with a peculiar badge hanging from it. The second body wasn't as fruitful, with the only thing worth noting was the badge it had. It was identical to the one in the kidnapper.

While Lythe was indeed hurt, the wound missed any vital area, so covering the wound would do the trick for now.

1735331084517.jpeg

Lythe examined the things he found and pocketed the items in his jacket before setting off again. Lythe Krael moved deeper into the ruins, his eyes scanning the crumbling structures under the pale light of a clouded sky. The air was heavy with the weight of forgotten history, and the air of lingering history clung to the stones like a ghostly presence.

He couldn't help but feel uneasy as he pressed on, looking for any signs of other people in the area. His unease turned into excitement as he thought about the battles to come.

h2GQWgp.jpg

Much like before, the inside of the ruins held more of the dead silence of the outside. Exacerbated by the looming shadows of the remains of what once was a grand display of wealth and power, now the hiding spot for cowardly beasts not ready to face the light. Although Lythe wouldn't feel observed anymore. He was all by himself out here.

Lythe wouldn't find much of significance as he explored the nooks and crannies of the ruins. Until at somepoint, the badges began to vibrate. And with them, a trapdoor slid open, revealing a stone staircase.

The staircase was dimly lit with crystals, but it reached a dead end. A wall with a faint marking in the center of it, with one more at each side.

Lythe looked, and looked, but it was no use. He wasn't able to decipher the path forward to find whatever secrets laid beneath the ruins. The madman disappeared, and so did his two victims. Leaving no major trace or clue to follow to unveil the mystery of Schalig Castle's ruins.

~~The End~~
