[Scene 1] A Fancy Party [Why Vote for a Lesser Evil?]

'Tis a grand sight, a ball in the imperial palace. A thousand times a thousand lights, flickering from golden chandeliers. Seemingly as many servants, scurrying to and fro carrying plates of steaming food, drinks both hot and cold and all manner of intoxicating substances. And everywhere there are the Chosen of the Dragons, rightful sovereigns of creation and in every inch aware of it. Draped in fashions from every corner from creation, striding confidently through the hubbub of servants and high-ranking mortals, they form the hub from which the spokes of society spread.

You have all arrived at this ball, hosted by regent Fokuf himself, at different times during the evening. Present are most of the influential political players in the realm and it doesn't take a trained eye to notice the undercurrents of intrigue that permeate the occasion.

Cynis Myrin

Soon after you arrival you are approached by a young water aspect. His elaborate dress and retinue of several lesser demons clearly mark him as a sorcerer. He introduces himself as Peleps Sutar, a recent heptagram graduate. He seems to have heard of you through rumour or tall tales and apparently he is starved for conversation on matters of sorcery.

Lillun

The return of one of the Empresses daughter, and one so young, causes a significant stir in conversation as you arrive. You are swiftly surrounded by a crowd of young dragonbloods, and some not so young. There seems to be a suspicious over-representation of young males of notable breeding in the crowd.

Cathak Elayria

Your arrival goes without remark by your peers, and you swiftly blend into the crowd. After a few hours of light conversation and socialization you happen upon a young wood aspect, sitting alone in a secluded corner in an obvious bad mood. She looks up at you and suddenly her sullen demeanour is broken by a radiant smile. She approaches you with her arms spread wide. She seems less than completely in command of all of her senses, an impression hardly lessened by the small collection of empty bottles by her seat.

“Oh, how nice it is to see a friendly face!â€

Sesus Limbic

Your arrival is little commented on, and you soon find yourself in the abode of those guests more appreciative of intoxicating substances. As you move deftly between drunken patricians and drugged dragonbloods you come across two people engaged in a fierce shouting match. One seems to be an elderly air aspect, draped in flowing robes and with lightning crackling around him. The other is either a mortal or a young dragonblood of poor breeding, yet he holds up remarkably well against the elder.

“Your plans are nothing but a stupid old mans daydreams!â€

“I... How dare you!? I'll see you torn apart limb from limb you...â€

Suddenly, they both notice you and fall silent with a vague air of embarrassment.

Lillun

Surrounded by her peers, Lillun resembled more the heart and soul of a small school of fishes in the sea that was the party, with those who had attached themselves to her swirling in size as she made her way about the ballroom.

Accepting a glass of wine from one servants, the young fire aspected princess smiled and nodded at the various personages surrounding her. She was aware, very well aware, of why she was surrounded by so many of her peers.

Not that she blamed them. Truly. After all, she would do the same if she was in their shoes. Not that she was.

An unattached daughter of the empress could be of quite some use if one wanted to play the Great Game that was always in vogue amongst the Dynasts.

Only now, the final prize was the Scarlet Throne and who sat in it.

'Still, one has to be polite... no need to make enemies,' she reminded herself as she laughed at a witty remark about her accomplishments at slaying so many anathema in the threshold, while not part of any Wyld Hunt. "No, no... I find that while dangerous, Anathema can be dealt with if one stays true to the fundermentals."

Sesus Limbic

Limbic got himself all dolled up for the event, as much as he ever might. His flowing kimono catches the eye, hair beads catching the light, and heavy getas signal his approach even over the ambient noise; even if people don't care about his approach. A mixture of elegance, grace and laziness.

He moves through the crowd of people, a hand coming up to excuse himself whenever he 'has' to get too close to somebody; a brief bit of eye contact that might make them remember his face later. His goal is the more lively section of the party, where there is less legwork necessary to get people speaking more freely. Familiar faces and 'business' associates getting a polite nod, but keeping any interactions brief.

He raises a red eyebrow at the interaction between the man and the boy. He makes no move to hide the fact that he's overheard the two of them, letting their awkward stunned silence weigh in the air; stretching it even thinner by taking a slow sip from his wine. The glass moves from his lips down to his hip, as if the weight of the wine itself was enough to make his arm hang loose.

"Now now, this is a party, boys. Perhaps we can talk this out like gentlemen before your Blessing lights my drink on fire? Before anybody else notices?"

<< I'm activating Sweeten-The-Tap-Method if nobody else already has. It makes the quality, taste, and strength of all wine in the event better. It was great to be invited to such a place, all the sounds, smells, and buzzing of words that she had so become accustomed to, were all here. Like a humming bird she moved and hovered between groups, listening to the light conversation taking in what she could then she would move on. Her most recent move had brought to her a slight frown as she spied the young woman that was brooding in a corner. Of course Elayria had to admit she herself was one people could talk with, and it was apparent when the brooding girl noticed Elayria and turned her... frown upside down.

Elayria flashed the woman a bright smile and approached her gracefully. "Yes a most friendly face amongst so many. Surely harder than one expected to find here, yes?"

Cynis Myrin

"So rare to find time to parlay with another sorcerer,"
Myrin says, "but yes, I'd speak highly of the Virtuous Guardian of Flame. Immensely useful little construct for those of us who fight with greater weapons than blade or bludgeon," he says. He looks about, inspecting the party-goers with a practiced eye. His gaze flits across the room, scanning for potential enemies or, even rarer, potential allies.

"I'm sorry, what were we talking about?"

Lillun

The crowd grows silent for a second, then the conversation starts up again with redoubled fervor as everyone tries to cover up their momentary embarrasment. One man, face bright red with alcohol, adresses you directly.

â€But certainly, the Anthema filth.. threat ish just a, watsit, tall tale, eh?†He strikes a pose, half mocking, half serious, and continues as if giving a sermon. â€If you have faish in the, um, Dragons, the faish of the Immaculashe... faish. It'll protect you if you have fa...devoushon, eh?â€

Those standing closest to the man back away gracefully, giving the impression that they're just moving with the natural flow of the crowd yet still leaving the man standing by himself. The man himself seems oblivious to this, though.

â€Or, like, the wyldhuntsh 's gon get them shooner or later, i say, right?â€

>Please roll Intelligence+Lore to see if you recognize the man.

>Essence surges through your mind for a moment and briefly you hear the thoughts of the young man as if coming through the din of a busy dining chamber. A few words stand out with notable clearness from the rest.

â€Oh by the Dragons, this is embarrassing. 'S all the the old mans fault, too...â€

The silence stretches on for a few squirming moments before the old man opens his mouth. The moment the first syllable leaves his lips the hesitation and embarrasment vanish from his demeanor as if they were never there. His voice rolls like thunder as he speaks.

â€I do believe you are right. All this shouting and going on is doing neither of us any good. Come, Meadec, let us settle our differences in private.â€

The young man finally regains the use of his tounge and answers heatedly.

â€We shan't, friend! I know full well that you have no intention of listening to what i say, and i will not have you going through with this hundred-fold cursed undertaking of yours!â€

He turns towards you.

â€I beg you listen, stranger, for the wisdom of a chance meet is not to be belittled.â€

>Please roll Intelligence+Lore twice to see if you recognize either of the two men.

Cathak Elayria

The girl rushes towards and grabs your arm in a familiar fashion. She leans on you rather heavily and you notice that her speech is a tinge slurred.

â€Yes, it's quite dreadful, isn't it? All these people and not a single one will come to the aid of a poor girl in distress. But you look so nice, you'll help me, right? It's quite dreadful, truly. My poor, beatiful friend, he's gone and lost himself. He's quite out of it, and i really, really need your help. Please?â€

>Please roll Intelligence+Lore to see if you recognize the girl.

Cynis Myrin

â€The benefits of spell-bound aid over mortal servants, right? Because i really think that with the right precautions and correct application we could double, nay, triple the speed of most construction projects in the imperial city, and elswere even! I've spoken at length with Ragara Rathak, the Ordained Overseer of Construction and Moral Considerations at the bureau of Construction, Architecture and Infrastructure and we think that in two years time we could... I'm sorry, i'm boring you, yes? No no, i know. I get carried away.

But tell me, you're a famous name, learning sorcery without going to the Heptagram, so have you found any use for ensorcelled aides that could benefit the realm in these times of strife?€

Lillun

"Mmmh..." An immaculate eyebrow rose at the drunken dynast's words, before she sighed. "I rather doubt that they consider themselves to be a fable. I know I didn't when I nearly died trying to kill my first one. Faith and devotion is good, but you need to back it up with a daiklave."

"I'm afraid I'm not the artificer that my grandfather is, if that's your meaning. Even still, I've a few...coals in the fire. I've actually been working on formulating some way of better channeling the otherwise ephemeral displays of Essence so characteristic of Sorcery. But that will require further study," he says with a sigh. An honest sigh: his attempts at Metasorcery had proven, at least, to be a field the empire considered legitimate study, despite it's rather tedious nature. "I haven't my grandfather's gift for charms either. Just sorcery," he adds, softly.

"I'm sorry," he says, shrugging it off. "I've monopolized the conversation myself. And you? Have you the next genius plan to win our Sorcerous brethren the respect of the realm?"

Limbic watches the two men, half-lidded eyes moving from face to face. He slurps softly at his wine, normally inaudible, but deafening in the awkward silence. He perks up when somebody starts talking again, grin fading as he's forced to take in his surroundings again; but as their voices drone into the background, that grin slowly grows again.

He chuckles softly, clicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth, "Meadec has a good point. He knows better than to argue with a man of clearly higher standing, breeding and experience. But the boy is brave and bright enough to still want to handle this in private, eh Meadec? Come, the three of us, we'll find a private corner to discuss this concern while the others prattle on about who is wearing what." He looks to the older air-aspect with a knowing smirk, "I know anybody who has heard even this much would love to gossip about it..." Limbic lets the last bit hang like smoke in the air, giving the men time to analyze if it's a friendly concern or a veiled threat; giving him the benefit of both.

He reaches his free arm up quite suddenly, grabbing a pitcher of wine off the tray of a passing servant before giving a slight tilt of his head to the two men, "Lead the way."

"Greater distress than I have thought. What can I do to help you?" Elayria tosses back strands of her red hair with a flick of her free hand and smiles gently at the young distressed woman. "What has befallen this friend of yours?"

>The flushed face and extravagant body language of the man sparks a flash of remembrance, a comment overheard in conversation sometime. You're fairly sure the man is a dynast of house Ragara, named Wicta or Wicre or something along those lines. You vaguely recall hearing him described as a liability at best, and a horrible smear on the house name at worst.

“Yesh, you would say thash, eh? Well, I shay, i shay, that a Daiklave'sh good'n all, but if you wantsh to do shum real good you need to fokush on more preshing ishussh. Likesh, for ekshample, how our, oh mosht venerable, glorioush throne, ordained by the dragonsh and all, ish empty! Empty, shave for a, a, a shlug for a man!â€

Cynis Myrin

A look of embarrassment flashes across the young man's face.

â€Ah... yes. I do, in fact, have a project on which most of my efforts have been focused for the last few months. I was uncertain as to how to broach the subject, but since you asked... I have been working with several of my classmates from the Heptagram on a rather momentous project. We've been making plans for building a... Wait, no. I shouldn't be talking about this. Unless...â€

He looks about furtively, then leans forward with a hurried whisper.

“Come meet me in the garden by the Smoking Chamber, over by the dining hall, in half an hour or so. I... Really must leave, terrible hurry, sorry.â€

And he hurries off. As he leaves, however, you can just catch him speaking to himself in a low voice.

“And what am I doing, talking about it in broad daylight!? Stupid, stupid!â€

Around you, several guests are glancing your way bemusedly, but most seem caught up in conversation or in markedly not conversing with anyone present. You can catch what sounds like a fight breaking out from an adjacent room.

Sesus Limbic

> You have a pang of realization as you recognize the pair. The younger of the pair is Leedal Meadec, and the elder is Leedal Jaseph. Though Jaseph is known for leading several successful wyld hunts he is mostly spoken about in context of his relationship with the much younger Meadec, the two of which are lovers. Meadec has yet to make a name for himself, though you recall that he attends the House of Bells.

The young man, Meadec, instantly takes you up on your offer and leads you to a secluded conversation chamber. Though the old man grumbles about Meadec being a nuisance he doesn't protest. When you reach the chamber you all take seats, and Jaseph sighs as the remnants of his anima tear gashes in the stuffing of his chair. Meadec is the first to speak.

“Now, stranger, hear what I have to say. Perhaps you will be able to convince my friend he is a fool where I can't.â€

Jaseph's demeanour darkens noticeably as he interjects:

“If you wish to waste the time of a most considerate stranger then fine-â€

He gives you a meaningful glance.

“But would you stop it with the insults? They server no purpose but to enrage me!â€

“Fine- I apologize, but your plan drives me up the walls! It is... Oh well. I'll leave the judgements to our friend, whose name I just now realize I haven't even asked for. I am terribly sorry for my rudeness, friend...?â€

Cathak Elayria

>You recall oft having glimpsed the girl at some party or other, always accompanied by an imposing water aspect. Her name is V'neef Dhine, and her companion is Onath Daiths, a lost egg. She has a reputation for being very intelligent and a skilled surgeon. Her long-standing betrothal to Cathak Garel Naerin is about to come to fruition in the coming few months, and there are rumours of her opposing the marriage to her mothers dismay.

The girl tugs at your arm lightly and glances over her shoulder, through the doors leading out into the adjacent garden.

“Oh, it's horrible! He's gone off the far end, I don't know what's gotten into him! He must have drunk too much wine, I suppose, but I have never seen him like this. He's already beat a servant woman half to death, and I can't get him to calm down. I told the servants to keep anyone from entering, but I fear that if I can't subdue him he'll make a dreadful ess of things.â€

Cynis Myrin

Myrin looks a bit dumbfounded as the boy spirits away, but regains his composure adequately. He touches the censer at his his--his Metasorcerous Phylactery--just to be certain it's still there. A nervous habit. Cynis Mond had a nasty way of losing everything, and Myrin had, to his own chagrin, inherited his grandfather's tendencies.

Of course, he also touched it to draw attention to it. Some sorcerers didn't like the attention of carrying around a legendary relic of the Four Magical Materials and Malfean brass. Myrin liked the look people got in their eyes, the slight distrust. The same look they'd have for the Empress' mantle, if not her crown.

And so Myrin mingles for twenty-five minutes, speaking at length with a Mnemonian sorceress before excusing himself to the gardens.

Cathak Elayria

Elayria frowns a bit, "Well that's no good. Does he not know that this may have implications with your future? I will have to educate the young man." She wags a finger and smiles at Dhine. "Worry not though, I am sure I can calm him down. It would be quite drastically horrible if not and then where would I be," Elayria continues to ramble as she starts towards the doors. "The tradegy would be so benefiting though, but House Cathak would most certainly cast a serious frown much less House V'neef reaction to this small display, don't you think?" She glances to the young woman with a raised brow and a soft smile. Let's see, she thinks to herself, where does the young V'neef's heart lay?

Sesus Limbic

Limbic rolls his eyes and lets the motion draw his head back as they start to argue again. He pulls his head forward again, leaving locks of hair and those beads swaying in front of his face. He moves over to the table while they finish the beginning of the banter, filling two glasses for the two other men and refilling his own mug. Some spills down the side of his cup, but he doesn't seem to mind, letting it drip to the floor as he takes a sip.

"Sesus Limbic. It's a pleasure to meet both of you. We're all intellectuals here, can we each give our side in a purely academic manner? If you can't make an argument without bias, perhaps you don't have an argument at all. I believe that's the saying?" He smiles to the two of them, defusing any insult that he might have made, pushing the glasses towards the two me and gesturing, "Come, relax. This is not a time to get concerned with the topic. Stress only clouds your mind."

Lillun

"Ma ma... harsh words," She shook her head with a slight smile, signifiying just how far he had gone with his words. Easily seen by the other dynast who had abandoned the Ragara. "No need to cast such harsh words upon our host. After all, he serves the throne to the best of his abilities. Something that one would expect from... mmmh... loyal dynasts."

When you arrive at the gardens you notice that while no one is walking in or out several people are looking furtively at the doorway. You enter and find Sutar in a secluded corner of the garden, walled by flowering bushes. As soon as he sees you Sutar waves you over and motions for you to take a seat at a nearby bench. He looks around before joining you and begins speaking in a low voice.

â€I'm terribly sorry for rushing off like that, but the walls, as i am sure you are aware, do not only have ears but mouths too, and they whisper in all the wrong ears. But no matter, now we are here and i shall explain.â€

He takes a deep breath before continuing.

â€I and some of my sorcerous colleagues have been working on plans for a great undertaking. We are planning to construct – invent, in fact – a great communications device. We believe that if we could perfect this device we could instantly relay messages to any one Dragonblood in the realm, possibly even all of creation!

However, the construction is going less well than we had hoped, which is where you come in. You are not Heptagram-trained, and maybe with your help, your different perspective, we could create a working device. If, of course, you are willing to help?â€

Cathak Elayria

The servants standing guard at the doors move out of your way as soon as they see Dhine walking at your side. You emerge into the garden and find a scene that is every bit as chaotic as the girls description had suggested. A large man, at least two heads taller than most men, extremely muscled and built like a bull, sits in the middle of the garden with his legs crossed and eyes closed. Around him the trees and bushes have been torn asunder or tossed aside, and several pillars and windows along the walls have been smashed to pieces. When you've walked a few yards from the doorway the man opens his eyes. They are completely black, and though his face seems serene at first glance you notice that he seems strained and unfocused. He opens his mouth and speaks slowly, in a surprisingly high voice.

â€Whad nau, Dhine? Yau'veh braught alaung saum auther mauron tau taell mae aim ae faahl?â€

Dhine answers with obvious desperation.

â€But you are! Or at least, you're acting like it! Why won't you just see reason and calm down?â€

He jumps to his feet, face contorted with fury.

â€Caul daun! CAUL DAUN!? Yau expauct mae tau tauke aet layuing daun vheen yau aur fauuhling araund like diis!?â€

â€Please, I don't know what you're talking about! Just... ah, what's the use? He won't listen to me anyway..â€

>Please roll Perception+Awareness.

While the older of the pair leans back comfortably in his chair the younger one takes a glass and sighs with embarrassment.

“You are wise, friend, and your advice is sound. Now, allow me to introduce myself in turn. I am Mnemon Meadec, and this is my great uncle, Tepet Iadern. I am certain I do not need to explain the dire straits that house Tepet have found itself in in recent times, nor point out that they are certainly enacting a multitude of plans to recover? Well, the moroni-â€

“Hrmâ€

“The plan that my uncle has in mind of enacting is just such an endeavour. He is planning to take, and I do not know how he intends manage even this first part, large sums of money from the already strained pockets of house Tepet and spend them all on frivolous things, in some vain hope that this show of wealth will convince creation that house Tepet is as strong as they ever were.â€

The old man retorts calmly.

“Now, Meadec, that is not my plan, and you know it. I have no intention of spending money on frivolous things, and my plan showing the world that Tepet still stands is a bonus at most. What I do intend to do is use the money to fund the education and training of promising found eggs, as well as commission searches around the threshold for lost eggs. I do not see why you find all this so objectionable.â€

“Because Tepet doesn't need potential allies or marriages in twenty years time, it needs them now! Making a show of sowing seeds for later harvest is only that – a show! Because if you do not see to the now there won't be anyone left to do the harvesting!â€

A hand slides into his kimono to scratch at his stomach, leaving the fabric gaping, even as they comment on his 'wisdom.' He looks over at the introductions, managing to hide a twinge in his face at the realization that he may have gotten one of the parties wrong. It reduces the chance for an encounter to follow the discussion, but only slightly.

He finally speaks up with a soft chuckle, "The boy does raise a good point. The Empress has been gone for quite a while. There are those who are on the rise to take the Throne, I'm sure." He takes a sip of his wine just to watch how the man reacts, licking over his lips before finishing, "I've heard your reputation, I trust you as an intelligent man. I think you know when it's best to cut your losses. There will still be civil unrest even if somebody else gets the Throne. Perhaps it would be best for Tepet to prepare themselves for that time."

He keeps that same smile on his face even as he turns his head towards the younger one, the slow gesture exaggerated, "But there are those who are too proud to accept such loss, and something like that is still admirable and powerful. How lucky you are, Iadern, to have this boy looking out for the well being of your House. Great House Mnemon is one of the closest for the throne itself, aren't they?"

>As far as you can tell the old man seems sincere. He seems to hold the boy in high regard, and he seems genuinely concerned for his house, and appears to believe his plan to be for the best.

Iadern chuckles and nods.

“Indeed I am fortunate, and though I did not ask for your opinion Meadec I am grateful for your concern. Though not for the insults.â€

His fatherly smile takes the edge off his words, but Meadec still looks momentarily ashamed.

Limbic gives another slow chuckle that betrays his young age, raising that glass of wine in his hand and tipping it back for a long draw. A single line forming on the corner of his mouth as the wine drips down to his chin, wiping it away with the back of his hand.

He gives a warm smile to the older Tepet, "It shows a lot of wisdom. Many in your situation might panic to act quickly." His head turns to the younger Mnemon, "Do you perhaps understand where he's coming from? I'm sure he'd greatly appreciate your support in this. He trusts you enough to have this conversation at all, doesn't he?"

Lillun

Giving the Ragara a pitying look, Lillun sighed ever so slightly. Clearly, she was embarrassed by his presence. Wouldn't he leave now? Without further humiliation done to him?

Even if she had been the one to ruin his reputation thus with her sharp words, the daughter of the Scarlet Empress really prefered the honesty of facing anathema in the threshold against politics in the Realm, where words could destroy lives with ease.

Lillun

The looks of embarrassment and condescension from his peers, as well as the pity in the eyes of the Empress's last daughter finally penetrate through the drunken haze of the Ragaras mind. His face goes even redder than it was, something you wouldn't had thought possible what with the copious amounts of alcohol the man has obviously been imbibing. He backs away a few steps more stammering unintelligible sentences and desperately looking for a friendly face in the crowd. He obviously finds none and utterly alone he actually turns tail and runs, no longer caring for whatever dignity he may have had left.

Cathak Elayria

Suddenly there is a burst of motion all around the garden as dark-clothed shapes spring forth from the shadows. A gleaming in the air swiftly becomes a swarm of daggers from all around, most targeted at the large water aspect but a fair share of them you.

The water aspect, having noticed some hint of the attack beforehand, rises in a gracefully fluid motion, striking aside most of the daggers in what you recognize as a form used primarily with daiklaves. Though he is still mostly unharmed it is obvious his lack of a weapon impaired him, as several daggers have managed to get through his guard and lodge themselves in his flesh.

Caught by surprise you are unable to defend yourself, and three daggers find their mark, jolts of pain surging through your body momentarily.

>After soak (I am going to assume you did not attend a party wearing armour. If i am mistaken then just say so, and i'll recalculate.) and rolls and stuff, you suffer 1, 1 and 2 levels of lethal damage. In addition to this the daggers are coated in posion, which inflicts 1 level of lethal damage (Roll Stamina+Resistance to reduce the damage to bashing) and gives you a -2 penalty to doing stuff.

>Join battle!

Sesus Limbic

>Roll a social attack (Presence would be fitting, as would charisma.). 2 die stunt.

Cynis Myrin

The young man is taken aback by your scorn, but he quickly springs back into his frantic enthusiasm.

â€That's the truly new part, i don't think it's ever been done. We're going to transmit the metaphysical concept of a message, or rather the spirit of the concept. We've not managed to make it work reliably yet, but when it does work it's quite amazing!â€
