  • RATS IN A CAGE

    You'd always gotten a 'second chance'. You grew to expect it, really, and you did whatever, whenever and wherever you damn well pleased. Only this time, it seemed... you wouldn't be getting that second chance again.

    The ultimatum was clear and vague all at once; You could serve your respective sentence in prison, or you could serve the scientific community for a specific 'social experiment' they'd hoped to conduct on a group of young people. You weren't given any details, though-

    They'd only told you to make your choice, and where to show up.

    A group of supreme fuckups has exhausted their every opportunity to reenter society without jail time, but is given just ONE last chance to avoid dire circumstance. Each formally complies to the requests of said scientists, thinking it'd just be a bit of sample collection. Unfortunately, and unbeknownst to them, their lives are no longer their own. Over the course of several weeks, the facility wastes no time restraining their new toys. Injections, merciless physical testing, minimal rest, rinse and repeat.

    Those that survived it all are faced with the realization that there won't be a 'release', as they'd been told prior to more or less signing their lives away. With no end in sight, they'll have to leave on their own, and hide well, if they make it.

Ability: Kinetic Shuffle: She can see and manipulate fundamental forces, specifically kinetic, within certain ranges. She does however follow the conservation of energy, and can only absorb small amounts as bodily energy. She can move that energy around though, and change what it affects. She cannot affect the voluntary kinetic energy of others. Additionally while this is nigh-instant, she can only affect singular objects or very small areas at a time. Lastly she cannot change the direction of forces, only the degree of energy.

hair: Shoulder-length hair, at this point mostly dirty-blonde but with black tips from prior dying.

skin: She is quite pale and has a litany of more and less obtrusive scars. Most old ones are subtle, besides some thicker scarring on her back, with marks of broken bones and small burns fairly common. She has however picked up new scars in her time in the place, with none so far on her face, but several on her hands and arms, varying from cuts to acid burns.
Weight: Rail-thin and barely holding onto lean muscle.
Height: 5’9, though shes an expert at manipulating her stature subtly.
distinguishing features: None besides the scars under her clothes. This is something she has extremely carefully maintained, being indistinguishable is an important asset for her work. To the very attentive this is distinguishing in it’s own way though, standing out so little as to be obvious.
Aesthetic: Put Sophie and Parker in a jug, shake vigorously, pour her out. More generally when dressed as herself she is the streetpunk scammer who made it good, in direct contrast to the more staid everyday dress. Dressing as below is rare though, reserved for when she relaxes somewhat, most of the time she is as indistinguishable from the crowd around her as she can be, taking up the prevailing fashion town by town.

-personality-
personality: She is a woman without a name, with all that that entails. She has no real legal identity, no name she considers hers. She has been thousands of different people in thousands of different places. Her time in the facility has ironically given her a more concrete identity than before, but the ordeal has also in some ways been familiar. This has left her both newly connected by the shared kinship, and newly repulsed by what she has fled before. All that is not to say that she cannot be kind, or personable, but she doesn’t trust people as a rule, and preserves herself above all. She has survived by self-interest, and she won’t change easy, but then these aren’t easy times.
positive traits: She is a lot kinder than she often seems, and there is a deep streak of good intentions she tries to bury. Additionally she is utterly loyal when she chooses to be, as rare as that can be. Further she cares more about doing right in the world than it seems.
negative traits: She is fundamentally, utterly dishonest. Outside of extreme duress you will never know her true thoughts on you, her surroundings or the world. Even injury is ignored and hidden, with only what is useful for her to show being shown and vulnerabilities buried above all. She has not trusted another human being in fifteen years, and has no intention to change that. She is manipulative to a fault, and when not following a set plan or pattern she is intensely impulsive.

ailments: She hasn’t exactly seen a psychiatrist, and after the recent months is even less likely to. She is aware that she likely has ptsd, adhd and several emotional disorders, but has long since leaned on the classic therapeutic tactic of absolute repression.

-history-
crimes charged with: Fraud, Theft, Impersonation, Forgery, many counts across several states. She is only tied to a few identities, but that was enough to convict of a litany of crimes, with the prosecutor suspecting many more.
backstory: ____ Was born to the kind of small-time american death-cult that’s a dime a dozen, uncommon only in that they kept their children strictly off of government registry, and were better at it than most. It wasn’t a pretty place, nor a healthy childhood, but she got by and learned fast. Her history of manipulation and deceit was very much forged there, learning pretty much from the start that she needed it to survive. For better or for worse it wasn’t a very successful cult, bleeding out over time, with things getting worse and worse. She was fifteen when things changed. The compound burned down, and after first responders were gunned down an all-out battle took place, with no survivors from the cult. With the fire unchecked, no trace of her was ever discovered, and there exists almost nothing to tie her back.

Newly emancipated, she hit the road, at first relying on a babyface. There were a few times she nearly settled down, a few moments of genuine kindness and nearly real connection. Ultimately though, too much of her deep cynicism also proved true, and she couldn’t bring herself to trust. Never again would she rely on another person, or let her life rest in another’s hands if she had anything to say about it. She learned well to trust and rely on nobody, to take every edge you get, and she thinks that's perfectly healthy and reasonable, thank you very much. Natural talent and more and more practice lead to her becoming an expert on petty theft, grifts, and fraud, slowly escalating in her tactics. She had been forced to become an expert forger under the tutelage of a cult member, and she used that knowledge heavily.

She bounced from town to town, from state to state, forging documents and staying alive. As she got better at it she got more and more money tucked away, but never enough to settle. Doing what she did came with expenses after all, and staying under the radar kept her from the more lucrative jobs. That combined with her being loathe to work with others kept her criminal career widely varied but not particularly impressive. When she was too slow to bounce and got caught she usually charmed her way through and skipped town anyway. Unfortunately she was caught up in a smarter setup than usual this time, with just enough info tied to her to get bail blocked all together, and then one thing led to another and she went into the program. She didn’t trust it much, but the investigator was getting too close to too many trails. She has dealt with this better and worse than might be expected, less shaken by the brutality, more agitated by the familiarity.

Personality: Fairily quiet, he hates letting others in often keeping a mask until he can trust them but he rarely ever opens up fully. Keeping to himself he is extremely vigilant. He can be head strong and bold, sometimes coming across as cold or hot headed. Incredibly creative with finding solutions people often turn to him when in a difficult situation. A bit impulsive he often finds himself in trouble, with his strong spirit he loves fighting back and giving people what they deserve.
Ability: Dark magic abilities accessed through the burned in markings on his forearms. His strongest ability is turning himself into a giant feathered bat creature. His demeanour becomes a bit feral and untameable during this state however he is incredibly strong and durable during this form. With his dark magic he can warp images in peoples minds of what they are seeing

Aesthetic: It is easy to discern that her preferred color is black, but determining the exact style she is going for with her clothing can be a bit trickier. Some days she may have a goth look while on others she may be embodying a hipster aesthetic. Regardless of whether she is donning her favorite footwear or Doc Martens or combat boots, her overall aura seems to lean towards the "suffering artist" vibe.

personality: Kaya can generally be known for her quiet demeanor. She’s a wallflower. An observer. But she wasn’t always that way. A few bad confrontations and she found it best to avoid the situation all together. She unfortunately, wasn’t blessed with a deep well of patience for others. She didn’t have thick skin. Her mother said she was quick to anger. And when she got angry people got hurt or things got broken. Working out, anger management, self-defense classes; anything that acted as an outlet the girl would try. But when she was in the moment it never helped.

As Kaya grew older she was able to get it a little under control but sometimes people liked pressing buttons. Kaya’s papa taught her to avoid speaking when angered because it would, often, only lead to negative consequences. But a person being silent to avoid speaking out of anger often gave folks the impression that gave them free reign to spew whatever nonsense they wanted. They often mistake Kaya’s silence for weakness. And they often found out it was, very much, not the case.

Kaya’s outbursts are quiet but violent. People don’t see it coming. And Kaya can’t help it. They call it a “blind rage” because you can’t tell what’s happening at the moment. It’s all instinct. A primal part of the brain takes the driver's seat and doesn’t give back control until you’re standing over a person who’s bruised and bloodied.

positive traits:
  • Observative: perks of being a wallflower. She’s good at noticing things like people’s body language because she’s been sitting back and observing them all her life.
  • Honesty: For better or for worse. Kaya doesn’t really have a filter. She’ll tell people what they need to hear instead of what they want to hear. Although, that can also get her in a fair bit of trouble. But mama did always say, "Truth may be bitter, but lies are the seeds of shattered trust and broken bonds."
  • Loyalty: Kaya doesn’t easily open up to people. But to people she calls friends or allies she will stand by them. Something her Papa taught her; "Loyalty is a fierce flame that burns brighter in the darkest of times."
negative traits:
  • Jealousy: Kaya often feels left out even if it’s the results of her own devices. She does it out of her best interest but the FOMO (feeling of missing out) still hits hard. On top of that she didn’t necessarily get to experience many things growing up.
  • Impulsivity: The last 3 traits all go hand in hand. Kaya is a “shoot first ask questions later” kind of girl. If a possible solution looks like it appears then Kaya is going to b-line for it. She definitely hates the act of “beating around the bush.” Sometimes acting fast can be a good thing but more often than not it’s gotten her into trouble.
  • Impatience: Basically, a synonym for “Impulsiveness.” Waiting around for a solution or opportunity to jump in her lap is something Kaya isn’t accustomed to. Or dealing with a person gets almost zero patience out of her. She doesn’t like mind games or people that try to talk smoothly. “Just give it to me, straight.”
  • Inconsideration: Kaya has been on her own for pretty much all of her life. She’s not used to waiting up or looking out for anything other than number 1. Something she’s learning she has to get over quickly.
  • Gullible: Kaya hasn’t interacted with too many people. She’s mostly been on her own and raised by her parents. If a person has ill intentions behind their fake smile then it can be hard for Kaya to even notice. Not to be confused with her observation skills. Some people are just sly foxes.

  • Knows herself around some firearms. Living in the middle of nowhere on the Reservation gave plenty of open space to learn.
  • Good with small trinkets. Helping her papa fix many things since it was often a pain to get something new by traveling far to the nearest town. Not to mention it’s just something she liked doing. It kept her focus. Whether fixing watches, solving rubik’s cubes, putting together small scale models from boxes, Kaya did a lot of it.

crimes charged with: Armed robbery. Illegal possession of a firearm. Aggravated Assault.

backstory: Kaya had mostly a quiet and reserved life. The reservation she lived at wasn’t much. And the neighboring town was more or less the same. There was only one constant in Kaya’s life and that was her parents. The girl didn’t get along with people so she spent most of her time at home. Partying after school, going on dates, getting into mischief? That just wasn’t something Kaya was too fond of. Sure she had a track record of getting into a few fights at school because someone made fun of her family. But aside from that she was a good kid. The school saw that she was trying to overcome her social interaction issues through different classes and therapy.

It was the one time her parents pushed Kaya to try and have fun on graduation night that her life took a drastic turn. She made a few acquaintances at the graduation dance. They talked and hung out and Kaya actually found herself having a fun time. The three friends offered Kaya to come with them to get some quick snacks and drinks at a local small store and they could spend the rest of the night watching and laughing at b-movies. It sounded like a good time so Kaya agreed. As they strolled through the near empty streets, at dusk, Kaya started to sense an uneasy tension among her peers. Unbeknownst to her, the three of them had devised a sinister plan to execute an attempted robbery at a local convenience store. They believed Kaya's presence would help them evade suspicion if they left her amidst the confusion. They were only driving through town and while the cops were preoccupied with Kaya, they would flee and probably be a few cities over by the time they were even considered as suspects.
As they reached the store, Kaya noticed the restlessness in her friends' eyes. Even sensing unease in the air, Kaya reluctantly followed them inside.

Within moments, chaos erupted. The three classmates initiated their ill-conceived plan, grabbing merchandise and causing a commotion. In the midst of the pandemonium, Kaya's heart sank as she realized her friends had a much different plan for the night than she did. She went to stop one of them when she saw a gun was out and threatening the store owner. Panic consumed her as instinctively, she leaped and struggled to wrestle the gun free. Before she knew it the other two were on her as well and tried to peel her off. Then a shot was heard and the man behind the counter fell to the ground, yelling in pain. The three others dropped the gun and immediately fled. Kaya was about to run as well when she looked at the store owner. She grabbed whatever she could find to help the man and at least stop the bleeding with a few rags. The sound of approaching sirens made her decide to try and flee the scene as well. She ran out the front entrance just as a couple of squad cars pulled into the parking lot. Kaya ran and attempted to jump a fence but a gunshot went off and her knees went weak. A warning shot. The officer ordered her to stand down and Kara knew she was caught.
The handgun was left with her. It turns out the handgun was stolen from a nearby local owner. She had her fingerprints on it. Gun residue on her hands. From the camera angle it was hard to tell if she was the one trying to shoot or wrestle the gun away. Kara had a history of violence through fights at school. And the clerk was confused about the situation as well. At best Kaya got aggravated assault and armed robbery, even if she regretted her actions and tried to help later. She still fled the scene. And that popular phrase of “innocent people don’t run” was heavily being used against her.

Born to parents who would do anything to have a daughter, she was spoiled from the beginning, lavished with gifts of all sorts to sweeten the girl into doing exactly what her parents wanted, becoming who they could not, masking the things done to her for her obedience. It wasn't until she had become thirteen that she learned of her older brother's existence, who was thrust into foster care by her parents for lack of want of a son. Outraged, Avalon spent most of her adolescent life searching for her brother, but to no avail - confidentiality is a bitch. This began her programming/hacking career, helping her make some money through high school and college as she essentially cut off her parents, left home, and lived with a boyfriend for a couple of years.

Everything would have been fine and dandy if she could have found her brother and if her relationship weren't abusive or toxic, but such luck was not available to her as she struggled with a mixture of red tape and belittlement. At one point, Avalon had enough of both situations and promptly hacked herself into less-than-available records to search for her brother, desperate for some semblance of happiness that didn't include bruises and broken ribs. However, those actions would come back to bite her in the ass as her efforts were both fruitless and illegal, resulting in her arrest. The only good thing she got out of the situation was the fact that she utilized her ex's IP address and successfully got him arrested as well for being an accessory.
