RP Creation Tips, Anyone?

I'm new to this site, obviously by the number of posts I have, but I've noticed a pattern. Every time I try to create a roleplay, it crashes and burns. I don't know exactly what I'm doing wrong. I set up a plot, a theme, make an oc and then allow others to make their OCs as well. Tips?

What I did for my RP (which is doing GREAT mind you) is not just let anybody join -- Anybody who was interested had to answer a few questions about why they wanted to play, what kind of character they wanted, and stuff like that... This has two effects I think:

1) If people have to do a character creation/application process they may feel more invested because they had to TRY to participate

2) If somebody is unwilling to answer a series of perfectly normal questions, they might not be up to the task of maintaining investment in your RP.

It seems to have worked out okay so far -- Most everyone involved in my RP has been great... and the application process weeded out a few people who were surely great, but not a good fit for my game.

Oh that sounds awesome! I might just have to steal that at some point. *Rubs hands together and laughs maniacally*

The same happens to me and a lot of the times I think "Hm, maybe I'm just not interesting." But I'm sure that's not the case at all. The start of a good roleplay is the Introduction and the Title. The thing that makes people want to click on you're post. And once you have them they stay interested in it. *shrugs* \( O.o )/ Also, like stated, make it so others feel like they have a part of control of what happens in the plot. Not just this happened and now this is going to happen. Make them invested in the roleplay by giving them a sense a free will. If that makes any sense what so ever? It's worked so far with one I'm in currently. That we all have a separate group chat as well as the roleplay to throw out ideas and future goals set for the characters. For me, a successful roleplay has always started as a group and grown into a sort of close friends.

It's not always the thread or the GM that's the issue, sometimes it'll die just do to a lack of commitment, most of which is usually due to life just hitting people hard unexpectedly, and some just don't take responsibilities seriously. So that's always a factor to take into consideration, being mindful of including enough detail to make a concept believable, but also leaving a few holes for flexibility among players also ensures some fun and creativity that everyone flocks too. Sense of free will, as Piyoko stated above :)

I also believe in standards, even for simple/casual roleplays, there should be a few rules laid down so individuals understand what you, as a GM, would prefer. Some may find it rude to have preferences, but I think it's entirely necessary for the creator themselves to maintain interest and be happy with the pace/development. But that's more personal, so I can't do more than suggest.

Regardless I think you have a great handful of advise above, hoping the next thread works out in your favor!
