Roommates RP

FancyRayOfLight

Light Itself
Lexi sat in her mom's car, pressing her self to the door nervously. She was heading off to her college of choice after just recently graduating high school. Her cane sat across her lap. Her mom parked and Lexi got out and retrieved her suitcase from the trunk. She took her mom's elbow to lead her to the building and soon enough they were surrounded by kids ready to head off to college. They got in line find their room and learn who their new roommates were

Jesse adjusted his earbuds, which were playing music a little too loudly, since anyone standing next to him could hear the music. It wasn't really his choice to go to college, but his parents thought that this would be a great means of keeping him busy and out of trouble. His mother glanced at him, and motioned for him to at least turn down the volume. Jesse simply shrugged, and turned it a notch up instead

Lexi entered the room and got in line. She could hear a muffled song probably coming from the earbuds of the person in front of her. She moved forward slightly, but accidently ran into whoever it was. "Sorry." She said, stepping back a little. At least it was only her cane that hit them, but still... "I'm Lexi Falcon." She smiled and extended her hand

Jesse sighed and pulled his earbuds out of his ears, "Yeah sorry could you repeat that?"

Jesse looked her, and then her hand. He was guessing he was supposed to shake it, but he had no clue to what she had said.

"If you would listen to me," His mother said, obviously annoyed with her son, "You would have an idea of what's going on."

Jesse didn't even look over at his mother. Was this girl in front of him blind? What was with the cane?

Lexi laughed. "I bumped into you by accident so I said sorry." She said, smiling. "And I'm Lexi Falcon. What's your name." The least she could do was start making friends while she was in line.

Jesse waved his hand in front of Lexi, curious. His mother shot him a look, and then quietly apologized to Lexi's mother.

"I'm Jesse," Jesse shook Lexi's hand with his other hand. He wasn't sure if she was completely blind or not.

Lexi smiled. "So I'm assuming you just did the 'blind test'." She laughed. "Nice to meet you Jesse. And yes, I am completely blind. You could just ask. I dont care."

Jesse looked a little surprised that she could tell. "How can you tell what I just did?" He asked. "How do you even get around places you don't know?"

Lexi laughed. "Your mom apologized to mine. I dont know why else she would have to do that unless you did the 'blind test'. And I use my cane to get around places I dont know." She lifted the long white stick in her hand. "Or I use a sighted guide, like my mom."

"Yeah well, stick around my mom a bit, and you'll hear all sorts of apologies about me."

"Well if you would be nice and stay out of trouble, you wouldn't have to hear them." His mother replied.

"Yeah, Okay, whatever." Jesse half rolled his eyes. "I was doing just fine until you guys kicked me out of my apartment."

Lexi laughed but then it was time for Jesse to get assigned to a room. "I guess I'll see you later." She said with a smile. Well, not necessarily see him but she would probably recognize his voice.

"Yeah, sure." Jesse followed his mother, slowly sliding his earbuds back in.

The rest was a blur for Jesse, getting unpacked, and settled in. Afterwards he headed out to explore.

Lexi got her room and met her roommate, who was already sitting inside. Lexi heard typing on one side of the room so she went to the other side, leaning her cane against the wall. She heard the other girl stand up, so she walked forward

"I'm Clarice Morrison." The girl said, extending her hand without Lexi's knowledge.

"Hi. I'm Lexi Falcon." She smiled but made no move for the hand.

"What're you blind? I have my hand out!" Clarice said.

"Yeah, sorry." Lexi said. She extended her hand, waving it a little before Clarice's firm grip took it. Lexi nodded. "I am blind." Lexi said.

An hour or so later and a lot of rule-setting from Clarice, Lexi took her cane from the corner and decided to escape for a while. She walked out the door and turned left, following the wall. Suddenly, she ran into someone. "Sorry!" She said.

"Oh hi again," Jesse laughed, stepping back. "I think between me looking anywhere other than where I'm walking, and you being blind, it should be fun to say the least. So what are you up to?"

Jesse had previously met his roommate, and they have basically agreed to split the room 50-50, so one half was Jesse's space, the other half the roommates space. Conner, the roommate hadn't been too enthusiastic about the idea of spending a few years living with Jesse, but Jesse didn't plan on really being in the room all that much.

Lexi laughed. She stepped back a bit. "Oh, hey Jesse! I'm just exploring. My roommate Clarice isnt the funnest to be around. Shes actually kinda mean. But I guess I just have to live with her. Did you meet your roommate? I honestly just needed to get away from Clarice. She went about setting curfews and bedtimes and wake up times for me. And she didnt even notice I was blind." Lexi laughed a little.

"Ah, same here," Jesse shrugged, leaning up against the wall, "Though I doubt I'll have to hang around him much. After we agreed to split the room in half, I slunk out of there to explore. Nothing like knowing where everything is so I don't do my freshman high school hunting for where I was suppose to be... Not that I needed to learn that since I cut most of my classes anyway."

Lexi laughed and nodded. "Yeah. I did a lot of hunting in high school too. But J didnt cut any. I want to major in English and become an author, so I'm gonna go looking for that building and memorize the route. I may get lost but thats the fun of learning." She smiled. She was very intimidated by the huge campus, but was able to keep a straight face and push through it.

"Well, let's go find the English class then. How are you suppose to write, though, being blind?" Jesse wasn't the type to think if what he was saying was rude or not, he just simply said it. "This place is sure huge, that's for sure..."

Lexi smiled. She opened up something on a strap that she had instinctively carried. It was her BrailleNote. "I write using Braille. This is my Braille computer, basically. I also have a computer back in my room that has text-to-speech enabled so it reads the screen to me." She took out a Braille page from her bag. "I embossed a copy of the school map..." With that, she scanned the page for English and traced the route a few times. "Okay." She said, making a right turn.

Jesse followed her, curious. "I didn't know they made stuff like that. Maybe because I've never met anyone blind before?" He shrugged. "Hope it leads in the right direction, and isn't backwards."

"Not the first time I've heard that. During an airplane ride one time I had a very long conversation with the girl next to me on an airplane. I opened my BrailleNote to read and she got all excited." Lexi said casually. She made another right, then a left before opening a door. "Here we are." She said.

(I love my BrailleNote.)

"It's nice that you can find your way around and all," Jesse said, looking around. Sure enough, it was the English room. "By the way, how do you even keep track of time? Like it's dark all the time for you, and I don't think they made braille clocks."

Lexi smiled and pulled back her sleeve to reveal a Braille watch. "They do." She flipped up the cover and showed him. "They also make talking watches. I had one of those before I got my Braille watch."

Jesse's mouth dropped open. "Wow, they make all sorts of stuff I never had a clue about. Next thing you know they'll be able to give sight to the blind." Jesse examined the watch, amazed.

Lexi smiled. "Yeah. Its awesome. There are two dots at the 3, 6, 9, and 12. The other numbers have one dot." She explained. Then she laughed. "Theyre working on it." She smiled
