Futuristic Riverworld

@Mitheral

Are you still interested in running this play? I've always been a fan of such a thing, and I would love to join in for the craziness that could ensue from such a barbaric construct as this. If your game, I'll be in as soon as we get enough to satisfy your needs for the amount of people you'd want within the play.

On the note of posting amounts, I would have to say that It would be a slight struggle, much to my chagrin, to get a post out daily. I may be able to keep up but It's sort of a toss up based on work schedules, I'm sure you understand such a thing.

As for your desired post lengths, I see you are aiming at a detailed play, *applauds* How long are we required/limited to post per reply? How lenient are you going to be during... say... moments where there is very little to say or do between posts? Would collaboration posts be allowed, ect.

Yes.

Oh ... you were probably looking for a more informative response. LOL.

The hard part is getting more people so there are actually people to interact. Yes, collaborative posts are fine. If we end up with two groups I may create a second IC Tab (some for faster / slower posting folks). My own schedule can get hectic as I am on call 24/7/365. I say 3-5 posts per week for this very reason. Mainly I don't want members who have energy and time to write waiting around a week for one person to post. A week is long enough for people to get sidetracked and drop an RP. Two days is enough for me to create an RP that is far more in depth than this one. You should see what I create in a week (about a 30-40 page RP Overview and Lore - more than once).

This RP is a little outside my usual type. I like civilization building - and this one is sort of biased against that. I am still not convinced that is realistic.

Anyways, this RP is more about exploring the nature of the beast so to speak. What will humans do with eternity?

I've not heard of the Riverworld series, but on reading that Wiki snippet you included I am intrigued. That's taking terraforming to quite the extreme!

I'm a little confused at the lack of animal life, insects especially. Most flowering plants require 'something' to pollinate them. I'm also confused as to what there is to RP. Every part of the river is like any other, except where the Grailstones are, so there's nothing to really fight over.

Why fight for leadership, when there's nothing to gain from it. Without reproduction then relationships beyond friendships are minimal, and without a drive for food then pressures there are also minimal - except like you say when someone loses a Grail. I love the concept, I just think it's a little too over engineered.

Perhaps if I read the books I'll realise some of the possibilities, feels like I'm missing something. If nothing else though, thanks for a book recommendation! :)

Sorry, been working all day and pretty sick at the moment.

All good points @Smeester

I debated very strongly with myself about the notion of no bugs, ores etc.

Ores: It is virtually impossible really to have a planetary crust with no ores. And, in fact, in the books one of the main groups built a steam powered riverboat. The wiki and books both vastly underestimate human ingenuity. Heck, I could probably create laser technology, IC chips, even flight. Not so sure about heavier than air flight though. However, you would have to bear in mind how the planet was created and the technology of the aliens that did so.

Bugs. Matter of evolution. The planet isn't really old enough to have any. That there is any vegetation at all is a testament to the technology of the aliens. And with the lack of bugs, you can expect the vegetation to be mostly inedible.

You have, in fact, missed the whole point of Riverworld's existence. Most people would until they read the books. Bear in mind that a large sampling of the human population was resurrected. This means both good and bad people. There will always be those who want more than others. There will always be Alphas, bullies, criminals, etc. Some may leave their old life behind.

As to being over engineered. I do happen to agree. But this was a case of the RP being based on books.

Aah ok - I was thinking it was more terraforming, not full construction of the entire planet Slartibartfast-style. That makes a bit more sense then. I'm hoping to pick up the books this weekend.
