  Perhaps the main reason he has found himself being a scientist, Quinn is the kind of person who thinks and cares a lot. He might not seem like it since he hides the fact under a generally nonchalant exterior. In every person he meets, he is quick to evaluate their value to him and first impression usually lasts.
  
  
  Even if he might seem moderately friendly and approachable, it is very difficult to earn his close friendship and trust. But once you do, he is a loyal and indispensable friend.

  Despite seeming like a generally pleasant person, Quinn has his own share of negative traits - mainly being selfish. Although he might not be obviously selfish, if one studies his actions carefully, one would notice that he mostly cares about himself and a small circle of people. Most of the time, his actions have certain reasons behind it and most of the reasons would cater to his own advantage. It is easy to ask a favor from him, if he knows you can be useful or can provide something in return.
  
  
  Events in his time as a red hood made him a more responsible individual now, but it hasn't taken away his aversion to attention and limelight.
  
  
  History:
  
  
  Quinn grew up in Kent Washington, a young boy born and raised by a pair of superstitious humans. Their lives were overcome and ruled by the power of Karma, and small superstitions which if broken or performed would result in severe punishment. But a particular one had always been stuck to Quinn since birth, such a ridiculous and irritating one which went, 'Those born with detailed marks bring disturbance.' This was the reason his parents then began neglecting him when possible, for his left arm had been covered with odd silhouettes of unpredictable things.
  
  
  Quinn had been their only child for all he knew, neither one of his parents wishing to test the fates into plaguing them with another faulted offspring. And in an act of not wishing to disturb other families they didn't allow Quinn his proper education, giving him limitations through out their home and the many acres of forest which surrounded it. He wasn't allowed to interact with other people, if he were out after sunset they wouldn't allow him back indoors, and if he were to break the first rule he wouldn't say his last name or who his family was.
  
  
  These principles he followed, and during the amount of time before the suns setting he would often times venture the forest. Quinn grew to resent people, imagining them all to be as unloving and disapproving as his parents. And grew to instead befriend the animals which scurried outside of his home, he'd chase them, pet them, care for them. All of his knowledge in the past had been built off of what he had learned by experience and by observation.
  
  
  But one night when Quinn as the mere age of 11, he had lost his way. The rocks he would use for his trail had been tampered with and though his many hours in the woods he couldn't find his way home. Losing hope entirely when the blue sky had faded to a crimson red and an exotic orange.
  
  
  Quinn can still imagine the amount of fear that had flowed through him during that situation. He had learned fast during his adventures how quickly one could fall prey to an animal, how if their instinct wasn't constantly on edge their fate had already been sealed. With such high anxiety at some point with the use of the moons dim rays he had found his way to a cave, one he quickly took a seat in, his back pressed in a crevice by the mouth of the cave. Frightened blue eyes darted in each direction, until they had frozen on a lanky shadow leaning around the outside of the cave, peering at him with a darkened expression.
  
  
  Quinn as soon as he found his voice let out a (masculine) terrified shriek, which only triggered the disjointed creature to come sprinting towards him with its dysfunctional limp letting out its own cannibalistic howl. And as though it would protect him, the 11 year old had thrown his left arm up to cover his face his eyes scrunched shut as he did so.
  
  
  But then a few moments after there was a chilling silence, nothing had torn into Quinns flesh and the woods were uneasily quiet. Until the small gentle click of multiple claws on top of rock filled the air, only stopping when it was in front of him. To which Quinn with new found courage pried open his gaze and stared upon the new creature that stood before him. It's surface was sleek and though the limited light, the moons rays reflected off the beings blue skin.
  
  
  Quinn had been prepared to scream once more but halted as the new creature instead of attacking had rested its head atop his short legs. An aura that felt alien to the blonde permeating off of it, one of concern and protection. At that moment a more human figure came towards him, panting as if she had been chasing something, something that may have been the crumbled body on floor of the cave in front of him. The women seemed shocked at first but seemed more understanding once she saw Quinn and his unusual companion.
  
  
  He soon learned her name was Georgia, and that she knew of a place where people would supposedly celebrate his abilities and would help him control them. This made him at first cautious, confused as to why the women was nicer then either of his parents when he had thought every person was as cruel. But after a few moments of her attempting to get him to trust her he had agreed, though he only told her his first name.

  Personality: Known as the 'Terror Bitch' among the student body, a bit of a grump and completely cynical, Petra-Elysia isn't the nicest teacher around. She isn't the teacher you come to when you want advice, or having a bad day. Neither would she care if you did. It's not part of her job description to do so. Petra-Elysia is not Petra-Elysia to her students, she's Professor {Von} Eisenschmidt. And Professor Eisenschmidt demands respect.
  
  
  Petra has never been an affectionate person, and even to the very, very few people she considers 'acquaintances', if possibly 'friends', don't get anything but the harsh truth. Though, perhaps, she may care slightly for your happiness. Perhaps.
  
  
  She may seem pessimistic, but Petra-Elysia is just realistic. Logical. She does not find comfort in being optimistic and seeing the bright side of things, she finds it to be naive and... Well, stupid. A bit on the eccentric side, Petra-Elysia can be found doing the weirdest of things to pass time, like watching dog fights or hanging out in her room, watching old dirty videos. Her drunken habits are known to everyone.
  
  
  She is loving to her partner however, even though she hasn't seen the man since she was forty-five and has taken quite the liking to his son, Ilay. An old lady, that she is, yet she has no real maternal instincts, as children do not appeal to her. They whine too much. However, she often speaks like an old bat, or at least when she is telling stories.
  
  
  To sum it up: Few are consider friends in her eyes, few people are worthy of her time and few students have ever been taken under her wing.
  
  
  Those few students... They're legends.
  
  
  
  
  
  Summarized History: Petra was born two months early in the city of Gothenburg, Sweden when her mother was on vacation. As a descendent of the noble lineage of the German Von Eisenschmidts, she had always been a part of the Red Hoods, as it came with her so-called blood. She was soon relocated back to her home land, Germany, to the town of Heidelberg.
  
  
  She grew up as a relatively normal child of her kind, the upper-class society treating her kindly. However her powers kicked in early at the age of five, eight and nine. Her enhanced memory and blade retraction a gift from her parents own powers, however her ability learning set her apart from the rest of the family. This did not only catch the Von Eisenschmidt's attention but also the Red Hoods, as any ability learner does.
  
  
  Her training was harsh and she went on small missions for the Red Hoods with her father at a young age. Her father had been very strict, and very vicious, leaving her with the burns on her face due to her disobedience. He had thrown her into the fireplace, and the right side of her face was burnt and her right eye blind.
  
  
  This did not stop her, however as she had soon enough enrolled in the academy. Due to her training prior and her enhanced memory, the girl was allowed to skip grades to the point where she graduated at the age of sixteen. Her partner, Aurelius had only been twelve and a half, with their partnership having lasted for five months before her time at the academy was finished. Petra had in turn taken an apprenticeship with the Combat Professor at the time and stayed until her partner graduated.
  
  
  At the age of twenty-one, she and Aurelius were full-fledged Red Hoods, and among one of the many incidents and missions, Petra had been kidnapped and raped. The kidnapping lasted three days. Aurelius turned into a traitor and Petra decided to work within the academy.
  
  
  She has been in employement for thirty-six years now and had only recently, about five years ago, learnt of Aurelius' child, Ilay.

  You've heard of the Von Eisenschmidts before have you not? One of the first families to join the Red Hoods, a noble line with a German descent. A blood line that carries with it many powers, one of them most revered by the whole lineage. The power to learn other powers. It sounds silly but it is what it is, I suppose.
  
  
  The power was a trick of fate, an accident of a horrible ordeal, one I believe to be disgusting. Few of the Von Eisenschmidts practice it to this day, or so I hope. What horrible thing was it that they committed, you ask? Inbreeds. They created inbreeds. And when a lineage filled with nothing but powerful people with abilities beyond our world decided to get all hot and heavy... Things happen. Horrible things. Like that power.
  
  
  But enough about that, we are to talk about me, are we not? This thing comes into the story much later. My name is Petra-Elysia, and yes it is one name, followed by many others which I care not to share at the moment. I was born in Sweden, actually, an accident as I was two months early and my mother, Serice Von Baugh, thought it'd be good to go on a vacation. Foolish woman.
  
  
  Anyway, my stay there didn't last long and soon enough I was in my home town of Heidelberg, Germany. And I lived the normal life of a Von Eisenschmidt. Spoiled with riches as an only child, trained and taught about the mythical world and the Red Hoods, already a part of the organization since birth. All Von Eisenschmidts joined, it was tradition, mandatory even.
  
  
  Among the things I was taught about this horrendous world was the powers that were common within our lineage, like enhanced intelligence and what not. And the rare few that got the power that Von Eisenschmidts sought after so very much. I was taught how I'd control each power, and what were the most common things to expect, yet everyone knew that it'd be quite useless. Ones power were their own, and all preparations can't help you once they kick in.
  
  
  At least, not much.
  
  
  And kick in they did, at the age of five, eight and nine. The blades were actually not shocking, it was a power my father and his mother, my grandmother, had shared. And the enhanced memory is merely a side-effect of my mother's powers, which far exceed mine in that aspect.
  
  
  But what they did not expect was the Ability Learning, they didn't think their daughter would be der Nachmacher. I vividly remember their reactions when I played with fire, and then cast a small fireball that disappeared into thin air within seconds. At first, they merely believed I had the power of Fire too. But then again, my grandmother had been alive during Ser Adalbert Von Eisenschmidt's time and recognized an ability learner when she saw one.
  
  
  Things changed after that. My training wasn't some simple preparation for the future, but was now the center of my life. School could be forgotten, my dreams of becoming a doctor was tossed away to be replaced by nagging aunts and curious uncles. Jealous cousins. And the Red Hoods. Oh yes, indeed. Der Nachmachers always caught their attention.
  
  
  By the time I turned eleven, I was quite... Useful. And quite gullible. My ability to bend my bones into blades and strengthen them was perhaps the easiest to control, and so, I was used to going on smaller scale missions with my father. Astor Von Eisenschmidt had been loving once, but by the time I was eleven, he had turned into a greedy bastard. A greedy, fucking bastard that didn't know what to do when I refused to obey him.
  
  
  Besides punishing me, that is. It was never serious, to be honest. Until that day. I had been playing around with one of the candles in the living room, something he had warned me about. And when daddy dearest walked in on me playing with fire, literally, he had tossed me aside. Straight into the fireplace. Luckily only the right side of my face came in contact with the burning wood but nevertheless, I paid for it.
  
  
  I had the mark of the Von Eisenschmidts tattooed onto my forehead before the accident, in case you were wondering.
  
  
  Onto the next stages in my long life. Obviously I enrolled into the academy the moment I turned twelve and passed my exams with flying colours. This is when I truly started to appreciate my enhanced memory, as studying was a lot easier when you actually remember what the teacher said in detail. It was also there that I met my partner, my geliebt bruder, Aurelius. Well, Raphael Jacobi Rodriquez Aurelius, but that doesn't matter.
  
  
  Auru.... Auru was special. He wasn't like the others, he had a plan and his future set out from the beginning. And those plans weren't like mine, forced upon me but they were his own. His life, his decesions. I dare say we were close, and while he was younger than me by years, he is still my partner. My bruder.
  
  
  His powers are not to be discussed. It doesn't really matter. But as I said, I was a diligent student, in the sense of getting high scores but my attendance was a bit... A bit on the low side. However due to my grades, I was allowed to skip grades, and by the time I was sixteen and Auru was twelve and a half, five months after we met, I was allowed to graduate. Though I stuck around to watch the bastard grow up and graduate himself. An apprentice for the former Combat Professor at the time.
  
  
  Within those years I was allowed to truly feel the power that a teacher had, and til this day I am grateful for those that I did have, otherwise I would not be where I am today. I would not have understood my powers.
  
  
  When Auru graduated, we 'officially' joined the Red Hoods, even though I had been actively a part of the organization since my childhood. For years I went on missions, for years I served this world and protected the more mundane humans from the creatures of the night. Ah, take note, the ones that go hunting at day time are the worst. Terribly hard to hide their trails, many of them known as the most vicious serial killers of our time. Ever heard of Jack the Ripper? Has the power of reincarnation, I heard.
  
  
  I'd rather not speak of these missions. See me as a police officer, I have my moments of pride whenever I save a life but the memories that follow aren't pleasant. Not that my enhanced memory makes it any better. To entertain you, even though you have the files in your cabinet, I'll tell you of how I was captured once, during my earlier years with the agency.
  
  
  I was... Twenty? Twenty-one? I can't quite remember, but I was able to drink without needing to fake an id, I think. One of the few blurry memories of my life, it happens when you are dead beat drunk.
  
  
  The bar was just closing and Auru had left me hours ago, the jerk wanted Bourbon but they had run out. I remember seeing men with dark clothing and the weirdest of eyes. They were a mossy green, with flecks of red. RED! Imagine the shock, when they took me away! Crazy motherfuckers.
  
  
  Strong men of the more vicious kind. They kept me for three days before releasing me. Apparently my lack of use was... Well, not so useful. Besides as a fuck buddy. My powers were of no interest to them.
  
  
  Later on, when Auru decided to bail on me again, as a deserter of the Red Hoods, I decided I had enough of this. So I became a teacher. Lucky me, my old professor had just retired and the spot as the Combat Professor was open. I was allowed to kick the asses of my students while observing their powers, learning them.
  
  
  I've been in employement for thirty-six years, I have seen thousands of kids walk through those gates and never come back. I have trained thousands of them to become what they are today. I have made some what they are today, some who I and the mythical world consider to be Legends.
  
  
  And only five years ago did I learn the existence of my bruder's, my partner's child. Mini-Auru. Of course the bastard was going around knocking innocent girls up while being on the largest wanted list of the Red Hoods.

  When you got more than 60 years to master your powers... Well, you freaking master them. And in Petra's case, she had not only discovered her abilities before she turned six but worked on them since she was five.
  
  
  Ability Learning: The ability to copy a power by learning how to use them. A bloodline power that is gifted to one of the Von Eisenschmidt's every fifth generation. Considered to be her 'main' power, outside of combat. Took her thirty-seven years to completely master.
  
  
  • Vital information: The power works as a storage system where she has the ability to 'store' powers and use them as her own. These powers are furthered stored into three sub-categories: Mastered, Basics and Memorized. The use of these powers drain her physically, however due to her constantly training her stamina and endurance, some powers come to her easier than others. Every power has a core, a certain teaching that relates to the power and is its essence. Lore is the history of a power, usually unrelated to most of them unless they are in the Mastered category. 'Switching' is a term that refers to the ability for her to 'switch up' powers to other sub-categories, if she meets the requirements to do so. When done so, either the power is stored within the 'memorized' category or completely forgotten and must be re-mastered.
    
  
  
  
  • Mastered Powers: As the name suggests, these are the fully-mastered powers that are limited to five at all times. For a power to be stored as a fully-mastered one, Elysia has to actually master them, know how to use them {all the techniques,}, and understand their core, essence and 'lore' completely. These drain her the most, and are rarely used, to the point where no-one besides the headmaster are unaware of 'what' they are. These are hard to store and obtain, and at times, they can take life-times to master. Extremely hard, nearly impossible, to 'switch' and she is unable to use two at a time. Unless it is a passive power. {Shall pm you the mastered ones}
    
  
  
  
  • Basic Powers: The more 'easy' powers, where Elysia only has mastered the basics of. For example, if Elysia decided to store pyrokinesis as a 'Basic', she'd be able to throw a fireball or perhaps, if she'd like to be drained a bit more than usual, a wave of fire. However she would be unable to summon fire on her own and would need to have a source. The Basic category is limited to ten powers. These are in no way powerful, and don't require much to learn, besides their core and simple casting techniques. They drain her energy, but she is able to use two at a time without becoming completely exhausted. Often used to enhance other skills. Takes energy to switch up, but is relatively possible.
    
  
  
  
  • Memorized: This is merely her way of being able to store powers she has learned the core and basic techniques of. She is unable to use them, and needs to constantly re-master their 'theory' to be able to store them. Limited to twenty-one at a time, these are relatively easy to switch up to Basics due to the fact that she has 'mastered the theory' and only need to practice the techniques. When she replaces a Basic with a Memorized, the Basic is 'dumb-downed' and needs to be completely re-mastered at the spot to be stored as a Memorized.
    
  
  
  Blade Retraction: The ability to retract blades from ones body. Petra's blades are made out of a titanium-like skeleton layered upon itself. Mastered by the age of 13 and a half. Hurts every time it retracts {pierces her skin} and/or is broken.
  
  
  Enhanced Memory: Most common in the Von Eisenschmidt bloodline and believed to be a side-effect of the Ability Learning gift. Petra is able to recall great volumes of information, in greater detail and for much longer than the average human. This makes her a harder target for memory manipulation. Her memory is also like a storage and has triggers, where certain situations/actions/words re-enhance her memory. She is prone to headaches, and if she attempts to memorize something beyond her capacity, she may/may not end up with brain damage. This has lead to more mental/emotional instability within Petra's life.

  Petra, as pictured, has the sign of the Von Eisenschmidt's tattooed onto her forehead and is quite pale, like every other Von Eisenschmidt. She has extremely light blue, ice-like, eyes and several scars on her back as well as burn marks. Petra is always wearing her mask whenever she has any sort of company. It hides the whole right side of her face, which is completely burned and her right eye has three claw scars running across it. Her right eye is completely blind.   Ilay, born to a rather mixed family line, has very contrasting physical features and most people take a double-take once they see the boy for the first time. The boy has seemingly flawless bronze skin, with small, light freckles scattered across his cheeks and nose. Strong cheekbones, with a soft heart shaped face and stunning, natural violet eyes which he inherited from his mother. Light red hair that seems to bleed into a more black/raven color as he grows older. He has rather long hair for a boy, and it stops just above the end of his shoulder blades, often seen in a ponytail.
  
  He has a lanky figure, lean and without much muscle. Ilay is fragile and it shows in his build, as he is a bit underweight. Slightly tall for his age.

  • The Concept of Pain: Describing the pain which Ilay inflicts upon a person when they come into skin to skin contact, is perhaps the most difficult part in describing this power. The pain comes in different levels, depending on what 'state' Ilay is in {described within weaknesses}, and is known to be tenfold the amount of physical pain than whatever state Ilay is in. The pain depends on how strong a wave is, how long the person and Ilay are in contact, and how calm and in control of his feelings, he is. As of yet, it seems like the pain lasts just as long as you are in contact with him, and the actual aftermath of it is what causes the 'writhing-on-the-floor-screaming-like-a-lunatic' effect. No signs of mental pain unless Ilay is above state eight has been shown. However, those that are affected may/may not get a trauma due to the pain. Ilay is currently unable to control the pain level.
    
  
  
  • Reaching out/Pain Field: Imagine Ilay as a source of pain, of suffering and that source is contained within him and his body. The source is constantly trying to escape, and barely does so and has created an elastic, skin-tight field around Ilay. When Ilay loses his calm, or is unable to control his emotions {all sorts of feelings} this source spills out and the field expands. It is reaching out and takes grab of whatever is within its field. At the minimum of a state 4, this is uncontrollable aspect right now and Ilay cannot expand/retract the field at will. The largest field created by Ilay was a ten feet circle.

While being calm and/or in control of his emotions, the pain seems to 'dull' and not reach out of his body. When in mental and/or physical pain, and/or mental instability, the power is unable to be retained and may reach out over five feet away from him. In the highest level.
    
  
  
  • Pain is felt: Ilay feels the pain that he has 'in him' whenever he inflicts it upon others, feels strong emotions, and/or becomes mentally unstable. While it is bearable for him, as he has lived with it for his entire life, this has caused him to be physically weak, and quite fragile. However the pain is always 'active' and so, it is always in a state. Ilay also always has a dull ache all over his body as well as minor headaches and/or sever migraines. As told by Ilay, the pain comes in 'waves', some weaker than other. Rated between 0-10, there are twelve 'states' of the 'waves', one of them not even considered an official state. Usually stays within the state of three. They have never reached a zero but they have come to 'the state of eleven' at two points in his life.   Personality: Ilay is not in any way a social person, and tends to stay away from people of all ages, especially those that are younger or of the same age. While he isn't cynical, he is a pessimist and does not believe in happy endings, or actions without severe consequences. His belief in humanity weak. Ilay is not trusting, and friends are not in his vocabulary. Afraid from being hurt, betrayed or otherwise, the boy closes himself within a shell of crude sarcasm, dark humor and rude remarks. That is, if you are lucky enough to make him even 'speak' to you. Ilay respects his 'superiors', the few that exists in his eyes and is often found to be wiser beyond his years.

  Personality: I've been told I'm a tad bit eccentric, and I guess being a magus, which is, by the way, the proper singular term for those who employ the mystic arts. Yes, I've been called eccentric, odd, goofy, as well as nutty on many an occasion. I can understand some of them, but I don't believe I'm crazy, at least not yet. Although, if you'd seen some of the things I have, you'd be just a bit off yourself.
  
  
  History: Oh lord, where do I start? Well, I was born in northern Russia, hence the name Nikolai of course. Soon after, my parents moved hereabouts, and currently live about twenty miles west of here. I began displaying my abilities around the age of six, doing basic magic tricks like making things levitate or disappear. However, things quickly escalated, and within the next few years my abilities began to get out of control.
  
  
  My parents, utterly confused by everything that was occurring, tried a number of solutions. They took me to doctors, who could find nothing. They called in an exorcist, who sensed no demons in me. They even tried a mental hospital, but they could find nothing diagnosable, other than an active imagination. Eventually my parents just kind of gave up.
  
  
  Once I came of age, someone from Riverview showed up at our door, asking if I would like to attend their school. My parents, finally seeing a solution, sent me off without a second though, and I began my time at Riverview. There happened to be an older Hood with a very similar gift to mine, and through a bit of experimentation, we found out how my abilities worked. Then we really started pushing the boundaries.
  
  
  Once I'd graduated, I spent much of my time among the supernatural, making friends with the more benign creatures, a handful of enemies among some neutrals, and putting the malign in their place. I have a few... associates among the darker creatures, but generally they don't want to talk, just kill, so I have to deal with them. Fortunately, I seem to be very well suited to do so.
  
  
  I'm very excited to teach at my old school, and although my methods may be a bit different from the previous teacher, I think the students will be all the better for it.

  Ability: I can actually warp, to my desires, the mystic energy of the world. Most people call such things magic, so I'll go with that. And if I'm calling it magic, I may as well call the things I do spells. So, let me tell you about them.
  
  
  Language: This is a passive magic I learned from a friend of mine before he passed on. Alzuir was one of a few dragons that still remain in this world, ancient beings of immeasurable power. They aren't very trusting generally, but if you do manage to earn one's trust, they're friends for life. Anyway, back on topic, he taught me a skill that allows me to communicate with the supernatural creatures in any language. To me it sounds like they're speaking English, and to them it sounds as though I'm speaking their native tongue. This is very useful when negotiating, or trying to make friends. Some benign creatures deign to learn human language, and some malign will learn our languages to make the experience that much more terrifying.
  
  
  Fear: Another passive skill I attained, though this time by killing a demon, is a resistance to unnatural fear. Some supernatural creatures, generally the malign, most often the ghost like creatures, such as ghouls, revenants, and wraiths, give off an unnatural and paralyzing fear, making it easier to prey upon those that can't resist it. The demon I killed also had this fear, and killing him has given me a level of resistance to this fear. Not sure how, but hey, I'm not complaining.
  
  
  On to the more direct "spells", they have a number of uses, from unlocking things, to warding off evil, to doing some real damage.
  
  
  Unbind/Unlock: This allows me to unlock most locks, even some more complex ones, as long as they aren't warded.
  
  
  Ward: Protects the warded item from damage, and prevents access by any without permission.
  
  
  Illuminate: Creates a ball of light that floats above my hand, illuminating dark areas. This can be used for other purposes as well, like stunning or temporarily blinding an enemy.
  
  
  Guarding Halo: A ring of light that protects those within it from those with dark intentions.
  
  
  Fire: This allows me to shoot flame from my hand, either in the form of a ball, or in a flamethrower like stream.
  
  
  Energy: Similar to fire, lightning can be shot from the hand, though this is a bit harder to control and direct, since lightning is rather erratic.
  
  
  Frost: By making contact with something, it can be frozen or frosted over.
  
  
  Holy Light: A light that can actually burn especially dark creatures, such as demons, vampires, and other similar creatures.
  
  
  There are a handful of others, but I don't want to waste your time.
  
  
  Finally, I have something I call my Ethereal Broom Closet. It's an... extra-dimensional storage space where I can keep random things. It's a place out of time, so food doesn't rot, metal doesn't rust, ice doesn't melt, etc. However, it's completely devoid of air, so it's best not to enter there, or you'll die. Just reach your hand in and grab what you need, or in this case, what I need. I usually keep food, silver weapons, a change of clothes, and water in there, as well as a handful of random things.
  
  
  Now, this may all sound great, but there are, of course, drawbacks. Magic is extremely dangerous in many cases if you don't know how to use it properly. In addition, it's physically and mentally draining, aside from the passive skills I've acquired. Simple spells are less tiring, similar in energy use to, say, walking leisurely for a few minutes. Other spells, when used for extended period of time, or in large amounts, can be severely exhausting, to the point where one can pass out, enter a coma, or even die. To use magic, one must have great mental fortitude, and very good physical endurance.

  Barnaby's power is quite simply, the ability to manipulate and transmute his own body and foreign objects into various types of crystals and gems. His body in its normal state is exactly the same as that of the regular human body, smooth pierceable skin, warm touch, squishy internal organs etc. But either at his command, or in response to physical trauma or other hazards, it will immediately transform into a crystaline substance. The composition of these crystals can vary wildly, but it manifests as Jade most commonly, a crystal Barnaby has known his whole life. During the transformation, the crystal doesn't simply just cover his body, it alters his entire biological structure, morphing him into what is essentially a sentient crystalline organism. As a result of the vastly different physiology, Barnaby's physical capablitlies are increased substantially and he becomes immune to a variety of enviornmental hazards, like heat or vacuums. He is free to alter his body parts at will in form, but without external materials he can only alter it and not expand or grow it. Simply put, he could reshape his hand into a blade, but he can't make the blade as long as an olympic sized swimming pool without any additional material. His body will regenerate slowly over time in this form, and he can speed up this process using external materials.
  
  
  The second aspect of his power is the ability to transmute objects into crystals. He can only do so if he is in contact with the material he is attempting to transmute, he cannot do it from afar. Once transmuted, he is free to manipulate the crystals as long as he remains in contact with it. He can also assimilate the created crystals into his own body, using it to repair damage or extend his body in certain ways. Any addition he makes to his body will crumble back into its original form once he shifts out of his crystalline form. Any transmuted crystals will revert back into their original states if not conciously maintained after a while. The physical properties of the crystals also depend on the substance he is transmuting. The hardest and most durable crystals he can only make out of tough materials, like steel or other metals. Transmuting weak and fragile materials like glass or wood will result in equally weak crystals.
  
  
  Barnaby can only utilise crystals that he thoroughly understands the scientific makeup and properties of, below is a list of those crystal types. Note that this list is not exhaustive, and does not contain the multiple types of crystals that Barnaby has yet to even experiment with.

  An unknown mental affliction that is unique to Barnaby. Despite being resistant to mental assault because of his powers, Barnaby's mind has been plagued with this ailment ever since his powers awakened within him. Prolonged and excessive use of his power brings about mental strain and pain that can last for extended periods of time. The magnitude varies depending on prior power use, ranging from migraines to complete comas. During these bouts of Crystal Sickness, Barnaby has been known to enter trances, with erratic behaviours including 'sleepwalking' bouts of unconciousness and involuntary speaking. Barnaby has requested that his utterings during said trances be kept secret from public, however during his first year in Riverview, Barnaby fell into a trance shortly after a demonstration of his power during a class. During this, he uttered a single cryptic line for the entire class to hear:

  Barnaby's crystal form is highly vulnerable to sonic based attacks and apparatus, strong enough vibrations can instantly shatter him. Shattered body parts regenerate much more slowly, and the repair process is also much harder. Torso or head shattering is instantly fatal.
  
  
  Barnaby's body does not immediately adapt to the sudden physiological change, going into temporary hypovolemic shock each time he morphs. The faster the transfomation, the more severe the shock has the potential to be. Years of transformation has lessened the impact of the shock, it still immobilises him for a period of time, but it no longer actively threatens his life, as it once did when he was younger.
  
  
  Sharp and precise strikes can be highly debillitating towards his body, depending on the crystal he is transformed into at the time. If the crystal is particularly brittle, it can shatter his entire body or parts of it.
  
  
  Physical exertion will come back to haunt Barnaby after he has shifted back to his regular form. Some of the physical strain and exertion that his crystal body carries over during the transformation, and the human body can barely even handle a fraction the forces his crystal body endures when it is pushed to its limits, resulting in potentially dangerous physical trauma and injury.
  
  
  General sensations like touch and taste is dulled when in his crystalline form. In addition, once in a blue moon he loses control over his transformation, leaving individual body parts like his arms or errr... 'squishy bits' transformed for varying periods, much to his chagrin.

  Loud, noisy events and parties. He has an irrational fear of amplifiers malfunctioning and playing too loudly, which sort of makes sense given his power.

  He has a scar running down the left side of his face and over his eyelid, which he obtained while stupidly fiddling about with his mother's gemcutting tools as a kid.
  
  
  Despite his parents being of ethnicities with stereotypically pronounced accents, his regular speech is quite normal, with a very subtle hint of a chinese accent in it.
  
  
  In his crystal state, his voice becomes lower and rather unnatural sounding, like if it was spoken though a modulator. If one listens closely, the may notice that this voice seems to be an amalgam of more than just one voice...

  Barnaby is a rather mellow and easygoing guy most of the time. He is laidback and casual in most conversations, and he gets along well with most so long as they treat him with equal respect. He does enjoy making snarks and poking fun of others at the expense of them, but its rarely with malicious intent and he usually apologises soon after. Though usually on good terms with most, he doesn't have a great deal of close friends, outside maybe a few other guys and a gaseously mischevous girl.
  
  
  He does however, also come across as trying a wee bit too hard at being cool more often than not. He often has bouts of 'tryhardiness' where he attempts to do stereotypically cool things like from TV shows, such as wearing sunglasses and attempting to chat up girls with a look on his face that can only be described as gormless. Once he snaps out of these bouts, he usually undergoes a period of embarassment, avoiding most social contact for a few days before slowly attempting to reintegrate himself into his social life once again.
  
  
  One would think this would be a habit he would kick with much ease, but alas it is not so. Pretty soon, he'll be at it again, and the cycle will begin anew...
  
  
  Biography:
  
  
  Barnaby was born in the city of Chifeng in Inner Mongolia to an Irish archaelogist and a Chinese gemcutter. The unlikely pair first met years before in the Gobi Desert, with the two arguing over a dig site. His father was convinced the site contained ancient Mongolian artifacts he was determined to find, while his mother thought the land home to veins of precious crystals. After weeks of bickering and digging, the pair found the answer to the question they had, which was that the site contained absolutely nothing but dirt. Fuelled with rage, the pair continued the heated arguments and finger pointing well into the hours of twilight.
  
  
  Nine months later, Barnaby was born.
  
  
  Barnaby's childhood was uneventful and completely normal, he spent much of his free time watching his mother making gems and quickly became interested in the craft, picking up the basics quickly and spending a lot of time reading up on the particular gems his mother was working on at the time. His father was out rather, frequently for excavations in foreign countries but he spent almost all of his time off together with his family, playing games and putting them all to sleep with endless historical trivia. Barnaby's early school life was also rather uneventful, as despite his mixed heritage, his looks were almost entirely Chinese, meaning he fit right in with the rest of the students, save for his first name.
  
  
  His powers began to emerge after his twelth birthday, where he inadvertantly transformed his hand into Jade, exactly like the piece of it he was currently working on at the time. He then proceeded to accidentally crush the piece of Jade he was holding and break every single bone in his hand in the process after the transfomation receeded. His unflappable parents bandaged the wound up and began to come up with theories as to their son's mysterious transformation. They started off by checking his teeth for shards of gemstones, assuming that their brainless son had swallowed one, giving him some kind of power. They continued to search his various orifices and were about to reach downtown when Barnaby's pleas for mercy finally halted their advance.
  
  
  Barnaby spent the next few years slowly mastering his power, from transforming himself bit by bit and improving his physique so that slight movements wouldn't completely obliterate his skeletal structure. His parents were supportive and kept encouraging him to learn as much as he could about his newfound abilites. Though he suspected that the her new endless supply of Jade played a part in his mother's enthusiasm, and he was also vaguely certain that his father's next big research paper would be titled 'Barnaby Yu: The boy who leapt through Tourmaline' which he thankfully was proven wrong about.
  
  
  Of course, Barnaby had to bring about his own ruin once he hit his teenage years and the concept of female attractiveness became known to him. Attempting to woo a pair of passing damsels, he attempted to grow a field of crystal flowers for the lovely ladies. Unfortunately, Barnaby was unable to stop the 'growth' segment of the scheme and he soon found himself standing next to a giant mound of radiant crystaline edelweisses which soon attracted the press and media in a matter of minutes. The flowers soon turned within a day, before disintegrating and leaving the gathered masses disappointed and dejected. The whole affair of course, didn't escape Riverview academy's watchful eye, and he soon found himself staring at an omnious looking invitation. His parents bid their reflective son a quick farewell, and rushed him out of the house lamenting the loss of a potential source of income, but relieved that they wouldn't have to deal with any more incidents in the future.

  Barnaby is fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese (his mother had migrated from Hong Kong), because of his mother forcing him to learn from an early age. He has some knowledge of Gaeilge as well, but he was carted off to Riverview before his father could beat more of it into his head.
  
  
  He wears a garnet ring, part of a set of family rings that was handcrafted by his mother for him and his family when he was young. His mother's is a sapphire one, while his father's is peridot.
  
  
  As mentioned, despite being of mixed blood, his appearance is almost entirely chinese. The only feature that stands out are his hazel eyes which are a much lighter shade of brown in comparison to the standard Asian dark brown.

  Power/Ability: Chastity could be described as having empathy or psychometry, but her power manifests a bit, well, oddly. Simply put, she can get a "read" on events that happened in the past by being in contact with or close to the environment they happened in, or with an object or person who was involved in an event. The "read" is a bit hard to describe- it consists mainly of feelings, thoughts, and impressions.
  
  
  Weapon of Choice: Chastity prefers weapons that won't hurt her too much if she mishandles them. A previously used weapon can incapacitate her if its previous use was violent enough.
  
  
  Weaknesses: Firstly, Chastity cannot "observe" the events she reads. That is to say, she couldn't give a play-by-play or even summary of what happened. She can only describe the feelings it gives her (e.g., someone was afraid and hurt); the impressions she gets (e.g., she was a small girl), and what she can deduce from the aforementioned (e.g., it wasn't an accident, someone hurt her, because she wondered why someone would want to do this).
  
  
  Second, for an event to leave an "impression" on a place, person, or thing, it has to be either intense or long-term. She might feel afraid or pained in a place where an act of extreme violence occurred, or safe in a home that had been inhabited by a happy family for many years; but she would not feel happy in a place where a person found a penny.
  
  
  Third, her impressions can be very misleading, because intensity and time trump recent events. Though she might pick up feelings of safety and comfort in a family home, that doesn't mean it's actually safe. Likewise, she might feel terror in a place where someone was murdered, even if the murder took place long ago and the place is now safe.
  
  
  Fourth, negative impressions affect her more strongly than positive ones, sometimes to the point that she is incapacitated. If the impression is strong enough, she becomes unable to extract her own emotions from those that were "left" by others. In extreme cases, she will scream, cry, and generally be psychologically tormented. This usually happens with places- objects and people give her a "focal point" to attach the impressions to, which helps her to keep them separate from her own thoughts and feelings.
  
  
  Fifth, she can't always pick up emotions that are alien to her. She can't imagine deliberately hurting another person, so she will pick up on the feelings of a victim before those of a perpetrator.
  
  
  Finally, her power has negative psychological effects apart from the acute ones. She sometimes suffers from cognitive dissonance when her own emotions contradict the overall "feel" of a place- for example, being excited in a classroom that feels bored. It also colors her interactions with people- if a person has had something bad happen to them, she might be nervous to talk to them because she picked up on their previous fear. Fortunately, she has developed functional coping mechanisms for most of these.

  Personality: Chastity is a bit of an odd girl, with interests, likes, and dislikes that aren't often seen as going together. She's a farm girl, but she likes pretty clothes and outfits, but she doesn't much care for keeping up with fashion. She is both emotional and logical, and has a lot of religious experiences for an atheist.
  
  
  Even without the help of her power, and sometimes in spite of it, she is very observant and analytical. She's no Sherlock Holmes, but she's good enough that people generally don't surprise her. She likes to observe people and analyze them as if they're characters in a book, and she subjects herself to the same scrutiny. She tends to be a bit lazy about tasks that she views as unnecessary or pointless, but she has a strong sense of duty and responsibility and is very motivated when driven by this. To Chastity, "this needs to get done and no one else is doing it" means the same thing as "it's my responsibility now." She tends to get protective of younger kids, especially if nobody else seems to be looking out for them. She is unused to being around people, so she comes across as a bit awkward, but she's usually poised enough to come across as more charming than bumbling. In some ways, she's unusually innocent for a girl her age, and in some ways she's unusually mature, and in yet others she's perfectly normal. Due to her comparatively isolated life, she comes across as a bit of a "princess in a tower"- missing cultural references, getting excited about thing most people see as mundane, etc. The strongest parts of her personality are her compassion, honesty, bullheadedness, and sense of duty.
  
  
  Biography: Chastity was born in Maryland to Patience and Thomas Miller. Patience was an Indian immigrant whose family held a moderate amount of wealth, and Thomas was an American of somewhat limited means. At first, he was eager to support his small family on his own, but he was not the most devoted man. Eventually he began to feel insecure in spite of his wife's reassurances. The tension in their household grew steadily, and by the time Chastity was six the marriage had ended in a rather messy divorce. Her father relinquished his parental rights, and she was raised mainly by her mother,who moved them to North Carolina.
  
  
  Chastity was homeschooled. For most of her life, her world consisted of herself, her mother, her books, and the occasional visit from a relative or two. Her mother was fortunate enough to be heir to enough money to provide the small family with a living that was comfortable, though not luxurious. They lived on a small farm in the country, with goats, sheep, various poultry, and two dogs. Chastity grew up surrounded by documentaries, music, art, and literature; with structured lessons provided by her mother. Despite her enthusiasm for things that caught her interest, she was a difficult student, often not wanting to focus or follow through. In her early years, her academic progress was particularly uneven, but she started to even out and mature at sixteen.
  
  
  Her closest relationship was always to her mother. They fought often, but always reconciled and tried to figure out the problem. Her father's absence left her with a fear of being abandoned, but her mother did her best to mitigate this and the other ill effects- in fact, Patience Miller is probably the only reason that Chastity isn't entirely dysfunctional about boys in general. Her talks with her mother were the source of her desire to understand herself and the world around her. Likewise, farming- especially once she was old enough to pull her own weight- helped to hone her sense of responsibility and practicality.
  
  
  For the first eighteen years of her life, Chastity was utterly unremarkable apart from being homeschooled, tall for her age, and a bit of a nerd. At seventeen, she was taking tests and applying to colleges like a normal kid. She was eager to go to college, be around people, and make friends. Unfortunately for her, her power manifested in the middle of her first semester. She was passing by an alley- which, as she found out later, had been the scene of a grisly murder nearly ten years ago- when she began to feel a cavalcade of emotions that she was sure weren't hers- first nervousness, the dread, then fear and pain and horror and the sense of dying, slow and inexorable. The flood overwhelmed her, and when she came back to herself she was in the hospital because she had been screaming so much. There was nothing physically wrong with her, so she was allowed to go home, but she was badly shaken by the experience. Worse, it happened again, and again, and again. Finally, her mother started to reach out for help, bringing Chastity's odd spells and insistence that she could feel the past to the attention of a distant relative of hers- a Red Hood.
  
  
  He explained everything to Chastity and Patience, telling them that Chastity's best chance of learning to manage her power was to attend Riverview. Chastity hated the idea- she wanted to stay in college, with normal people, and complain about tests and dither over classes like Russian lit and comp-sci, not learn how to fight the forces of darkness. Her mother, on the other hand, pointed out that going to Riverview might be the only way that Chastity could ever have that normal life, since controlling her power wasn't something she could learn on her own, and she was very bad at Frisbee anyway. Chastity reluctantly agreed to postpone college and attend Riverview for the next school term. However, she isn't terribly enthused about her studies at Riverview, especially since she doesn't see her power as being terribly useful.
