Ethnicity: Half white on her father's side, half Dominican on her mother's side. Due to her parents' strikingly light complexions, Astrid is noticeably pale herself.
Height: 5'10"
Eyes: Easily her most striking facial feature, Astrid has icy pale blue eyes, thick, expressive brows that play a major role in her facial gestures, and full eyelashes. On the occasional instance that she may wear makeup, all of her creative efforts would go towards enhancing her beautiful eyes, either through dark, smoky eyeshadow in either a black, dark brown, or deep red, or something more vibrant like glitter brows or an intergalactic sticker on the corner of each eye, depending on her mood.
Hair: Very long, curly, and in an ashen dark brown. Frizzes easily and is difficult to maintain. In a manic state, she often wears her hair lengthy and down, neglecting to straighten it, or chooses from a number of go-to hairstyles such as space buns, flower crowns, twin braids, or an abundance of other 90s inspired hairstyles that are often unique, poofy, and are bound to turn heads. Reversely, in a depressive state, Astrid prefers to straighten her hair, to represent her hatred of the more striking aspects of herself during this period, such as her giant, crazy hair, yet her unfocused and withdrawn nature while depressed often causes her straightening job to appear messy and unfinished. While straightened, she either chooses to wear her hair down or in a loose ponytail with a surplus of unkempt flyaways, and she is far less noticeable in a crowd.
Other Features of Note: Very high cheekbones. Nose that is just a bit too long. Always wearing black fingernail polish. Doodles covering hands, arms, legs, etc. Has a hidden, natural blonde streak on the underside of her big brown mop due to her father's golden blond locks. Slight clef chin. Self harm scars covering her thighs. One eyebrow is slightly higher than the other.
Clothing Style: Astrid prefers simple clothing that could likely be referred to as quite "tumblr". In a manic state, she often throws on a plain black shirt tucked into faded jeans with a dark belt, converse, the occasional flannel, an abundance of string bracelets, a grunge choker, and a selection of unique makeup, hairstyles, and accessories that match her pale blue eyes. During this period, Astrid also experiences increased self-confidence, so she tends to wear tighter or more revealing clothing, like crop tops, to accentuate her curves. This is the time in which she takes most risks involving hair, makeup, and accessories. However, while immersed in a depressive state, Astrid chooses to wear clothing that is looser, simpler, and more modest, often in washed out colors that will attract minimal attention from those around her, consisting of oversized sweaters and untucked t-shirts that conceal her body's natural shape.
Personality:
Because Astrid suffers from bipolar disorder, her disposition can change every few months, depending on whether she is in a state of mania or a state of depression. In order to best understand her personality in its entirety, it is better to explain how she behaves in each state separately, and the qualities she retains in both, forming the core of her enigmatic persona.
While in a state of mania, Astrid tends to be quite impulsive and often overestimates her own capabilities, which can be a danger to herself and those around her, especially combined with her innate sense of pridefulness and obstinacy. She is already a person who can be rather daring and try things that most people would consider too 'wild' to attempt, so, while in a manic period, she will frequently take inadvisable risks that put herself in jeopardy, such as driving down the road at high speeds for the thrill of it, setting things on fire, sneaking out of her house to go on little 'trips', etc. Often behaving in a lively, optimistic manner, shrugging off even the most treacherous events with an easy smile and a breezy laugh, Astrid nonchalantly refers to her impulsive acts as an endeavor to live life to the fullest possible extent, an obvious reflection on her obliviousness to the negligent and destructive nature of her mania-induced actions. With an increased sex drive, Astrid often forms many open sexual relationships during this time and relishes in being wanted by those of the same or opposite sex. Unlike in her depressive states, Astrid is most carefree, spontaneous, intelligent, and 'fun' while in mania, and because of her frequent inability to calm her racing mind, she barely sleeps and occupies her nights by trying new hobbies, drawing on herself, getting weeks of homework done early, indulging in profound or unique reading material, or climbing out of her window and taking little 'walks' under the stars. When upset, although her aloof and overly confident nature in this period prevents much sadness from occurring, Astrid resorts to excessive arguing, grand emotional outbursts, risky business, or slamming herself into large inanimate objects to let her anger out, often resulting in noticeable scrapes and bruises. Despite its tendency to be a mentally exhausting, dangerous, and tumultuous time for Astrid, manic states are the period in which Astrid is most sociable, creative, and 'easy to deal with', as if she was ever so simple to handle in the first place.
On the other hand, if Astrid is considered 'fun' in a state of mania, she would be declared the opposite in a depressive phase, which also lasts for a handful of months. In this state, Astrid is withdrawn, unmotivated, and experiences increased self-loathing due to her compulsive lying, impetuous actions, and heightened promiscuity during her manic states. It is easy for Astrid to discern her shift into a depressive state when she begins to feel guilty for her actions during the opposite period, or when she starts to become 'burnt-out' from all of the increased activity from the prior state. Because of this guilt, Astrid will often resort to self-harm in the form of cutting, which she will do to punish herself for her overly self-assured and reckless nature beforehand. Falling behind in school work due to her waning focus, neglecting to maintain friendly relationships, and often irritable to those that reach out to her, Astrid is subdued and quiet in fear of returning to her priorly impulsive ways. Although it is referred to as a 'depressive' state, Astrid has the capability of being content in this period, yet her mental fatigue and lack of motivation prevent her from reaching out to those around her.
Generally, however, Astrid is a unique, strong person who intends to be as kind as possible to the people around her despite her occasional inability to do so, by doling out thoughtful compliments and interesting observations about those that may cross her path, and going out of her way to help those in need when it is within her emotional capabilities at the time. In either state, despite her occasional bouts of sassiness or seclusion, Astrid always tries to see the most beautiful aspects of people and is not afraid to declare them with sincerity and wholeheartedness. Usually maintaining high marks in school, even with her difficulty to focus during a depressive period, Astrid is an intelligent, witty, and creative thinker who can't resist an intellectual or philosophical debate, stargazing and otherwise gushing about outerspace, or sharing her quirky, odd, hippie opinions about the world around her with a unique way of speaking that is often aloof, clever, and graceful.
Skills:
+ Self defense. Astrid's father, tall, physically imposing, and an adept fighter, taught Astrid how to protect herself with proficiency in the event that she may encounter a shady-looking character on the street or otherwise abusive figure in her life, God forbid. Because of this, Astrid is aware of several physical combat techniques as well as how to shoot a gun, although her accuracy in that regard is quite underdeveloped. The downside to this, however, is that Astrid's training was neither mind-bogglingly extensive nor intended for combating deranged, nightmarish mutants either.
+ Lots of mechanics and a little bit of woodworking, courtesy of her father. While not as proficient in making things as fixing them, Astrid could be quite useful in the outbreak in regards to repairing vehicles, radios, shelters, etc., and the occasional construction of wooden weapons and traps, depending on the difficulty of their blueprints.
+ Wants to be an emergency doctor, so she has some knowledge in regards to treating and sterilizing wounds due to her own personal interest, yet she doesn't have any formal training besides the occasional health elective nor hands on experience besides fixing her own self-inflicted wounds. The limited knowledge that she does have, however, may prove helpful during the horrors of the apocalypse, and perhaps she can, in a pinch, save some lives.
+ She also has some minor skills that aren't quite related to nor particularly helpful, yet not necessarily harmful, in an apocalypse, such as arguing/negotiating, doodling, reading things that are highly above her grade level, seduction, having a way with words, etc.
Biography:
Hailing from a middle class family on the slightly upper side of finances, Astrid lived with her parents, Jon and Aemelia, her two younger sisters, Aurelia and Thora, and a friendly gray husky in the years preceding the outbreak. Her father, strict, opinionated, and with a knack for working with his hands, owned and ran three successful hardware stores in the Northeast where he sold both tools and his woodworking creations, and he serves as Astrid's closest parent, taking her under his wing and teaching her the ways of mechanics, woodworking, being a successful businessman, and, most importantly, self-defense. At a young age, Astrid's mother, tough, free-spirited, and beautiful, was a backup singer for a famous pop artist and had a promising career as a musician until she was forced to put her passion on hold after her unexpected pregnancy of her first child, Astrid, and she remained a stay-at-home mom for several years. As the years progressed, and her children became more self-sustaining, Aemelia returned to her dream of being a successful folk singer and began creating what she hoped would be a number one album, but to no avail. Aurelia, 16, with a more distant relationship from her two sisters, follows in her mother's musically inclined footsteps, while Thora, 14, and quite close with Astrid, is a young rebel searching for her own foothold in life.
During her Junior year of high school, after years of being teased for her 'strange' activity despite a tight nit group of friends, Astrid finally slept with a boy she had been in love with since childhood, but after a blistering argument, he betrayed her in the worst way possible by revealing her undiagnosed 'mental problems', promiscuity, and clingy nature to the greater Junior class. Naturally, this sent Astrid into a deep mixed state — a dangerous combination of a manic and a depressive state — in which she felt a total disregard for whether she lived or died and began to self-harm. After attempting to drown herself in the family tub, yet failing due to her parents' intervention, Astrid was immediately sent to a therapist who diagnosed her with Bipolar Disorder Type 1, and her family uprooted their life in New Jersey for a new start near their second hardware store in New York, in an effort to remove Astrid from a hostile school environment. Her parents, already not the most content of couples, proceeded to argue after the move about how to 'deal' with their three, very different daughters, from Astrid, self-destructive and mentally ill, to Aurelia, bratty and disgruntled about their move to New York, to Thora, resentful for her lack of attention in the household, causing a rift in the already unstable family. After beginning her Senior year, Astrid, renouncing her 'clingy' ways for a more aloof persona, regularly spoke to a therapist under the watchful eye of her parents while genuinely attempting to curb her self-harm addiction, in addition to lackadaisically taking medication for her disorder, which has its own set of side effects.
