Renaissance Era Roleplaying

“A mural. That’s what our house needs, more paintings and a mural,” Emmeline Mariel said to her family, pointing at the empty wall in front of her.

“We can hire an artist to paint this wall with our family symbol. If we get a good artist to paint our palace, we’ll have a more colourful home and gain more status. How does that sound to you, mother?”

“That’s a great idea, Emmeline,” Ms Mariel said, smiling at her daughter. “I’ll see what I can do. We’ll get the best artist in all the country. And if they don’t, we might as well ruin their reputation so they don’t ruin anyone’s castle.”

“Understood. I’ll be in my bedroom,” Emmeline answered. She went upstairs where her room was, thinking about the new decorations in her family’s home. On the other hand, she was more curious about which kind of person her mother would hire. The only way she had for seeing artists was while visiting her father’s colleagues palaces and going to church, where she would admire all the beautiful paintings decorating the place’s ceiling. She admired artists, and having one working at her very own house just made her excited.

The next day morning, Evelyne Lortentia just finished a lesson along with Family Magnesson's daughter when she's been claimed for a white man in the entrance of the palace :

"Hello. I am Family Mariel's butler; We intend to hire a great artist for paintings and a mural, where is the famous M. Lortentia?" he introduced.

"Father is out today, exceptionally, I am really sorry. May I ease the House Mariel and see what it is all about, for father to let you know when he will be ready to begin?" Evelyne suggested.

"Alright I guess." replied the butler : M. Lortentia's daughter is well-known in this country for her accurate artistic view and her help in the Magnesson's palace decorations.

He squired her to family Mariel's palace. Evelyne was happy to find a potencial patron : the House Magnesson that hired her father three years ago actually was not in needs for nearly a week.

Emmeline couldn’t wait for the artist to arrive. Her mother was also impatient, as her father, but for his older brother it wasn’t a matter of importance. She had been informed that her butler, Jameson Cornell, had been entrusted with the task of going to Magnesson’s palace, where the artist had made their last work.

“Mother, when will Jameson come back?” she asked, playing with her hands on the skirt of her purple dress. She really wanted to accompany the butler in the journey to the artist’s house, but her father denied her petition.

“Mister Magnesson’s palace is about two hours from here, he should be arriving by the afternoon,” Ms Mariel said to her. “Why don’t you go for a walk as I wait here? Time will pass quicker if you don’t worry so much about this. I will call you as soon as I see our carriage in the front door, is it fine for you?”

“Fine, fine…” Emmeline answered. After that, she walked from her palace’s hall to the garden, where she could observe all the flowers covering the bushes. Gardeners made a great job taking care of all of them, as she didn’t notice any dry plant outside. It would take her a long time until she walked through the entire place, but it was going to be a great way of distracting herself from the butler’s arrival. Even so, she was back again when the clock striked at four in the afternoon.

Hours passed, and the noise a carriage was heard in front of the palace. Ms Mariel could see the chauffeur driving towards the door, and soon she could see two people getting out of the carriage, one being her butler.

“Emmeline, they are here!” she called. As soon as the young woman heard her, she ran to the hall, and spied through the window to take a peek of the person next to Jameson.

“Finally! They took ages to come,” she commented, as she waited for them to knock on the castle’s door, which happened moments later. Ms Mariel opened the door.

“Welcome to family Mariel’s palace, mister Lortentia,” her mother greeted, making a reverence along with her daughter. But there was a thing that surprised Emmeline.

There wasn’t a man next to her butler.

Evelyne was frightened by Mrs. Mariel's manners. "I am only the shadow of a creative artist, only famous M. Lortentia's daughter, and such a noble, the most engaged woman of the city, I heard, just did a reverence to me".

"Pleased to meet you, I am Evelyne Lortentia, mister Lortentia's daughter, and I.. I apologize, he went to an assembly with mother and M. Magnesson, and some second-class nobles. He certainly thought such a family wouldn't be calling today, but he'll be back for tomorrow. And I suggested Jameson Cornell that I could come up and reassure you, as I heard you urgently are in need of paitings and of a mural. I'll bring father tomorrow and you'll see he is the one you needed." she timidly said, making a reverence.

Then Evelyne looked around her and noticed the girl in pink quite taller than her, whose eyes shined when Evelyne talked about her father.

"A pleasure, miss Lortentia, I am mistress Mariel, warrantor of the palace to which you are welcome. Please come in", she said to encourage Evelyne, pulling and turning her back, "you see the entrance, with its magnificent decorations. Do you paint?"

"Yes, Mistress Mariel, but I never painted on my own, I've only been helping father. I'm following him since I am a child, and yet he likes to know my inklings and let me paint sometimes, as in the Magnesson's palace. Aww this frame in the middle with house Mariel's symbol is majestuous! However I see it would stands better if it was less compact. Maybe I can see where you want new paitings, if you have the time to?" pursued Evelyne.

"It would delight us. You know, we truly love art in here, especially my daughter Emmeline next to you. Oh I didn't introduce you, Emmeline" explained the palace owner.

"Please allow me to introduce myself, mother," Emmeline said, giving a bright smile to her guest. "It's such a pleasure to receive you in our palace, Miss Lortentia. I am Emmeline Mariel, the eldest daughter of the Mariel family, and I'm particularly enthusiastic about your father's work. I've seen it at Mr Magnesson's palace, and be certain that it has no equal that I have seen. Father, Mother and I guarantee that in here you'll have the treatments you deserve."

The enthusiasm in Emmeline's pale face was clearly visible for everyone in the hall. Her green eyes shined with joy as she started running her fingers in the tips of her red hair, putting her other hand on her lap.

"Since introductions have been made, we can start showing Miss Lortentia an outline of our idea for the mural, shall we?" Mistress Mariel said after her daughter finished with her introduction. "Come along, please."

Then Mistress Mariel headed to the large empty wall, passing by the corridor on the left.

A few steps behind her, Evelyne was admiring the various decorations : she loves tasteful artworks, and to her it seemed like that the family Mariel loves them too : there were all kind of artworks and plenty of eccentric ones, all together developping a colorful harmony.

"That's magnificent" she whispers to herself, "I've never seen this much artworks in a single corridor".

"Mother ordered the main part, I love them all. What their artists placed into them is worth a study", whispered back Emmeline which was right behind Evelyne.

"Oh.. You are Emmeline, yes I guess, but those ones really seem unusual to me, most of the nobles I have seen have no taste and would only ask for something beautiful and ordinary" answered Evelyne, walking towards Emmeline's mother which was looking at her ahead.

"Well, most of the nobles prefer to think of art as a way to portray status," Emmeline commented, walking through the hall along with the other girl. "Mother and I would rather consider it a manner of the artist of expressing himself. Besides, it's really pretty too. To see art only as a representation of power is like admiring flowers because they can be sold."

She loved she could talk about art with another person outside her family. Even if Evelyne wasn't a professional artist, she seemed to know a lot about the matter. All of the paintings in the hall were singular, her mother being in charge of getting to know new artists to decorate their castle.
