Fantasy Project Zodiac

Ah, allow me to explain... A Vocaloid is an electronically animated 3D image. Their voices are created by inputting sounds through a computer. Sounds include things such as basic pronunciation of letters, vowels, and any other basic sound that makes up words. Those sounds are then used to create songs which the Vocaloids sing, usually in front of a large audience in Japan. The 3D images are quite realistic, with fluent motions on stage such as actual dancing and whatnot.

Well now I know! Thanks! It makes a lot more sense now cause other people have tried to explain it but your explanation! It clears everything!

Yep! That's pretty much it xD

I'm bad at explaining so thank you Kiyoko for explaining that xD

Actually, the 3D animation isn't a necessity for it to be vocaloid, just something used in performances and presentations of it. All it really needs is to have the simulated voice as the singer.

I wouldn't call myself an expert, just somebody who does a lot of work with music. It'd be pretty bad if I didn't know what a Vocaloid was, given that I like to mess around with electronically-generated music... I'm pretty into music if you couldn't tell ( :P )

The 3D image is in itself what makes it a 'Vocaloid'. It isn't a Vocaloid if it has no appearance or substance to recognize it by, as otherwise it's just a highly-advanced automated vocal system. The whole concept of a Vocaloid was designed around 3D-generated beings that can sing and dance.

Citation needed.

I double-checked the definition.

  1. Vocaloid (ボーカロイド, Bōkaroido ?) is a singing voice synthesizer.

So no, the animation doesn't make it a vocaloid. Vocaloid is technically a brand that sells synthesizers.

We recognize Hatsune Miku as a Vocaloid because she has a name and face. Otherwise, we would just recognize her as a voice generated by the program called Vocaloid. There's differences in the two subjects however, as a Vocaloid is the being that holds the voice and is recognized as an actual existence, while the definition of Vocaloid itself is a software used for creating substance, such as words, out of mere sounds.

I see. Your problem wasn't with the definition, but the semantics. A Vocaloid is used to refer to a singular Vocaloid 'singer', whereas Vocaloid as a collective is used to describe the medium as a whole. If you had opened with semantics, then I would have had no objection because I already get this. However, a Vocaloid isn't defined by the image, but by the voice - and image is given to that voice, but the image is not the Vocaloid, the voice is.

Well, technically it refers to the program, and not the image or the voice.

True true, though as people, what we do is attach the voice to a name and face in order to easily recognize it, thus the face and name are part of what is recognized as a Vocaloid. I believe there's no true way to define what's recognized as a Vocaloid though, given that it's a matter of opinion when it comes to Vocaloids as multiple entities, rather than Vocaloid as the software itself.

I'd still call something a vocaloid if it has a name and makes music.

But then again, don't listen to me.

I don't even like vocaloids.

I agree, Kiyoko. As much as a Vocaloid is technically the name of the brand of program that's used to make the music, if you showed someone a picture of Hatsune Miku, they would also recognise that as a Vocaloid. If we started trying to find a solid definition of it, things would begin to get really confusing.

I keep messing one of my tabs up?
Ah, remove formatting from the tab codes. Highlight the text that makes the tab codes, then click the button on the top right of the editor that has a T with an x next to it.
