Brightstone Labs ( AZ ) became famous for the discovery of the Unknown Star Alloy Mutagen a.k.a USAM discovered deep in the Sonoran Desert. USAM proved to be a major breakthrough for the scientists of Brightstone ushering in revolutions in crop management, horticulture, and clean energy. (re: iSAMS & Genesis Flowers)

But their most famous experiment was Project Darwin - where they gathered 21 volunteers to undergo a groundbreaking stasis experiment. The people would be put in pods flooded with USAM and it was hoped this would unlock hidden potential within their body.

Pre-Silence Technology

GENESIS FLOWERS: Genesis flowers were plants fused with USAM that seemed to be able to self-mutate at a rapid rate to fit with any growing conditions. They also seemed to increase whatever innate properties they had that made them favorable. Produce especially seemed to take on increased nutrients with the introduction of USAM. The research into medicinal properties of Genesis Flowers were being started when Project Darwin was begun.

iSAMS: Integrated Self Sustaining Adaptable Machines ( or iSAMs ) where the first foray into combining the USAM energy with mechanics. Most of the early trials where a dismal failure, as USAM’s energy seemed to clash with the more complex technologies. But the more simplified the starting point the more long term the success. iSAMs tended to do simple tasks best but the benefit was they also seemed largely self-sustaining. An iSAM light switch for instance could run entirely free of electricity indefinitely.

CURRENT TECHNOLOGY: Currently technology is heavily handicapped due to overgrowth of Genesis Flowers and lack of humans available to keep it up. There are spots where clean energy still functions in fits and starts ( solar panels, wind turbines, hydroponics, etc. ) and anything barring a iSAM logo seems to function fine. This is usually light switches, simple appliances, heating/cooling systems.

NEO ARIZONA

THE LABS: Where the characters will start - of all the buildings it is the least changed in function. Much of the lightning still runs as well as for some reason the stasis chambers. The computers are destroyed and large portions of the building with it.

There are sections where the roof seemed to have been peeled off and nothing green has come in, except ironically in the chamber where the characters awaken. There are strange plants growing along the outer perimeter - some seemingly coming from the bodies of the people that died.

And that’s another thing the bodies of the volunteers that died lie dead but not decomposed.

Outside of the stasis chamber they’ll find a few recordings from scientists, the doors still working, the cafeteria with flickering lights and very little food.

Mostly not a hospitable atmosphere but a fairly sturdy shelter.

The Labs are surrounded by a sprawling desert with large, colorful, and occasionally fragrant succulents dominating the landscape amidst tall grass. Creatures roam the desert at will, some ordinary others downright uncanny looking.

THE CITY: A location that the characters travel to after leaving the Lab. It is the remains of the nearest large city to the Lab and is fairly sprawling affair. Much of the central part is untouched by nature although there are the few green spaces where people’s roof gardens or the like have grown out of control.

And the city parks have all grown wild in the years since the characters last saw the City.

The buildings are largely in disrepair as are the vehicles. The few more suitable buildings have eerie Ghosts within them.

A few of the buildings with the iSAM logo have at least working lights, central air units that work, hot / cold water, and a few simple appliances that work.

Groceries stand abandoned with most of the perishables long since gone bad but the canned goods might prove edible still.

Most eerie of all about the cities are the total lack of life save the Ghosts. No animals, no people, nothing.

Not only that but sections of the city seem to be peeled away as if something large was opening buildings like can-openers

UNKNOWN CREATURES

PREDATORS: Animals ( typically predators but not always ) that seem to have a strange almost human intelligence. They don’t necessarily act in any way negatively or positively to our characters at present but they are things to look out for. ( they also seem to be uniformly larger than they should be )

GHOSTS: Invisible creatures that seem to come out in low-light mostly although they don’t seem to be immune to light as such. They mostly exist as a disquieting feeling of being watched or judged. Like the predators they don’t seem to act positively or negatively to our characters but they are a presence. They also seem to be the only creatures that exist or follow our characters into the cities.

SILENCE CLUES

THE LABS: According to recovered recordings the SILENCE was a world-wide extinction phenomena that happened an indeterminate amount of time ago. The cause/effect of this was that … Things … appeared and led to some kind of destruction of humanity. Or possibly they came after the Silence.

You’re in a small dark place but you are unafraid. There is warmth surrounding you and a pleasant hum that lulls you into a peaceful kind of daze. Occasionally flashes of images intrude upon the dark but you let them flow over you. Like tiny silver fish they are gone in a blink of an eye and are little more than amusing breaks in the dark to entertain you.

For an eternity you drift peacefully in the dark. Then flashes of light intrude, unlike the quick flashes these are bright and they remain. Breaking the darkness with images you don’t understand until you begin to move restless and afraid.

Like a mother soothing a fussy babe the darkness and warmth envelop you tighter. The hum surrounding you increases into a rhythmic noise, this slowly soothes you deeper into the darkness. The bright images forgotten, you fall deeper and deeper.

Here the warmth is little and the darkness surrounds you but still you are unafraid. The steady rhythmic noise has followed you and you drift unafraid as images flash.

In the silence you can almost hear voices in the dark and they lull you into a deep sleep.

The hiss of the stasis chamber opening and the sudden flooding of light into a previously peaceful darkness had Rebecca Watson jolting awake. She instinctively covered her eyes as the light blinded her and squinted as the wires and cords connected to her skin slowly fled back into the wall of her chamber.

The liquid she had been suspended in cooled rapidly and as her senses adjusted to being awake she became aware of a strident noise in the background going in and out at odd intervals.

She frowned around her in confusion as she waited for a scientist to approach and explain if the experiment had been a success or not. She certainly didn’t feel all that different - beyond wet, disoriented, and slightly chilled. When no one was forthcoming immediately she took matters into her own hands and attempted to climb out of her chamber herself.

The liquid surrounding her sloshed about and she kept slipping on the bottom of her chamber but eventually she was able to drag herself upright and out of the chamber entirely, landing with a painful thump on the outside.

Once outside she sat panting for a moment and got her first good look at the room around her, causing her to blanche and mutter a horrified Italian curse.

The room was in shambles. Bodies of other volunteers lie in varying positions around the room, the lighting was flickering and massive greenery seemed to have grown around the room in a wild tangle.

Her horrified eyes followed the path of the greenery until she had to abruptly lean over to be sick. Parts of it had seemed to be growing out of bodies and it sent her fragile calm into a tailspin.

Panting in fear she scrambled up, backing up against her chamber and readying her voice for a scream only to choke off when she caught movement in the corner of her eye..

Frantically backpedaling away she scrambled into her neighbor's empty chamber slipping on the glass at the bottom and finally finding her voice.

“Aiiiiiieeeee!”

The silence was broken by the slow hiss of escaping air, something Brandon only registered on a subconscious level. As the fluid levels dropped and the cables began to retract he came violently to consciousness, coughing and retching to purge the last of the suspension liquid from his mouth and lungs.

He sunk onto the floor of the chamber, blinking rapidly to try to clear his vision as it adjusted slowly to the blinding light. The only thing he was thankful for as the retching subsided was that he had gone in with an empty stomach, there was nothing else to vomit. As the temperature inside the chamber cooled, he began to shiver uncontrollably. He had been told this would be part of the reanimation process, that it would pass, but he had assumed there would be a whole host of doctors and scientists helping him readjust.

The thought gave him pause for a moment, as he tried to understand. The only sound coming from outside the chamber was a piercing alarm. Where was all the noise, the conversation, the shouted orders as people rushed around to help and monitor him and the other subjects. Shakily, he reached up to pull himself up into a swaying standing position. He glanced outside the chamber into the room beyond, but without his glasses he couldn't make out any fine details. He reached into his pocket to get them, to put them on, when he realized they had taken them before he entered stasis.

He took an unsteady step out of his chamber and began looking around. He couldn't quite tell, but it looked like they had redecorated in here. There was a lot more plant life in here, but he couldn't make much. Had there been a mistake? Perhaps he wasn't meant to have woken. If he was early it would explain why there was nobody around. That must be it. Any minute now there would be people storming in here to explain what was happening, he just had to wait.

A retching drew his attention to the other reanimation chambers, and he thought he could make out another open chamber, with a shape in front of it. A scream rang out through the room, and the whoever it was moved fast, leaping in to another of the stasis chambers. Assuming it was another of the subjects who had woken early, he tried to call out, to let them know he was awake too. His voice was a raw choke, unintelligible. Swallowing a couple of times, he tried again with only a little more success. Realizing it might take a while, he began to shuffle forwards, his weak muscles straining to obey him.

He made his way to the chamber he had seen the person enter, shuffling over broken glass. His thoughts were still sluggish and he didn't think about it as he slumped against the chamber. He stuck his head into the chamber, fluid dripping off his face as he looked inside. He got the brief impression of tan skin and dark hair before they moved.

Her first scream reduced to a terrified squeak she pressed back away from the wet stranger in front of her, the pounding of her heart so loud in her ears she nearly went light-headed.

The current chamber was broken though and she found herself pressing into cool metal and shivering worse.

It took a few breathless moments of the stranger squinting at her for her heart to slowly calm. The stranger wasn’t doing much other than hovering and even that wasn’t as frightening when she realized they seemed to be squinting at her in confusion.

‘ They must need glasses ‘

The thought floated through her head as visions of her younger brother floated through her head wearing the exact same look whenever he lost his glasses and was searching for them around the house.

With that explanation a big chunk of the tension in her body faded, the poor person was likely just as off put as she was and if they couldn’t even see; Rebecca shuddered to think how off balance they must be.

As she attempted to slow her breathing and heart-rate she squinted in turn to get a good look at the stranger. It was a man, with damp hair that was the light dirty brown that blonde got when it was wet. He didn’t seem all that tall and a little slender. Definitely Caucasian but that was all she could determine in the uneven light.

Finally getting tired of being boxed in she decided to attempt to communicate again, this time she cleared her throat a few times before croaking out a question.

“Um could you backup a little?”

Not her best opening line but she was starting to get a little claustrophobic in her little chamber.

When she was given a little space she slowly crawled out of the new chamber being mindful of the glass and the abrupt surge of pain along her heels. She looked down and winced to see blood mixed with the glass below - that was going to get bad if they didn’t find someone soon.

With that and mind, and frankly freaked out by the new decor for the chamber room, she cleared her throat painfully and croaked at the stranger again.

“We should head for the lockers, maybe someone is there who can help.”

He backed off quickly, suddenly aware that he had been cornering her like some kind of predator. Add to that the way he had been staring at her through squinted eyes, he must look like a complete idiot. Or a pervert. Great, just great. He reached to take off his glasses and clean them, a nervous habit, forgetting they were missing until his fingers closed on empty air. Dropping his hand to his side, he avoided looking at the girl while she exited the stasis chamber, suddenly aware of how his wet clothes were clinging to him and not wanting to give the wrong impression if she caught him looking.

He knew he should have been offering to help her, but a sudden thought had occurred to him. She had originally been in front of an open chamber, she was climbing out of a second... Where was the third test subject? Something else tugged at a corner of his mind, the glass on the ground, when she spoke.

There would of course be lockers. They had told him his belongings would be kept while he was in stasis, ready for when they revived him. He hadn't been thinking clearly, but then again he was unsure where the lockers would be. They could go looking for them, but what would happen if the staff arrived to help them with the reanimation process and they were gone? On the other hand, he had no idea of when they would arrive, and until they did he would be stuck here in a blurred room with a stranger he may have already offended. Stretching his legs would do him good anyway.

"This way, I think."

He at least managed to form words this time, though they tore at his throat. A drink would have been wonderful at this point. He remembered there had been a smaller room just off this one where he had been prepped. Their belongings might be inside there, close to hand for when they awoke. Unless she had a better idea, that's where he was headed.

He took a couple of steps forward, stepping tentatively. He could feel some strength returning, but looking around he realised he had no idea which way the room had been in. He was feeling disoriented, and unable to see clearly he had no way of judging where he needed to go. He coughed nervously and continued forwards. He thought he could see a doorway ahead.

The stranger seemed to have some ideas as to where he was going although his lack of eyesight obviously threw him off. As he was currently walking towards - a darker corner of the room between two vine groups.

Rebecca hurried after him, wincing and fighting not to curse every time her feet hit the ground. She at least managed to make it across the room without looking down or to the side too much which was a bonus. Although as she got closer to the flower she started seeing pale pinkish purple flowers among the leaves. The flowers had a interesting smell which helped settle her rolling stomach.

She caught up to the stranger just as he was walking towards the dark corner where different thicker flowers grew.

“Hey the door's over here guy. Scuzi what is your name? I’m Becca.”

She said a little embarrassed at her lack of manners as she lightly tugged the wet sleeve of his containment suit as she guided him away from the green corner and towards the actual door, this one also wreathed in plants and she was careful to ignore the body half lying in the doorway.

She sidestepped around it quickly before tugging the stranger further into the new room. This one had had greenery along the walls but less bodies. In fact it was largely empty other than a few dozen cubbies bolted to the wall and a consul with a black screen and error messages blinking steadily.

She left the stranger and went towards the consul curiously - perhaps the black screen explained why they were out without anyone coming to find them. Maybe the power had gone out or the Lab had been attacked? The bodies and overgrowth would support that, although the idea of being alone with no idea of how to get any kind of aid wasn’t comforting.

She poked at the screen a little and nothing happened before turning to the cubbies.

They looked like over-large safety deposit boxes and they had numbers - numbers that she vaguely thought might match up with their Identification Numbers.

“Do you remember the ID they gave you? I think these have them written on them. So maybe you just need to go to the write one and say your PIN? Or open or something?”

She said peering at one curiously. As soon as open left her mouth she was surprised to see the one in front of her burst open the little light on top going from red to green.

Inside was a pair of clothes that weren’t familiar and a necklace she didn’t recognize.

“Huh I guess ‘Open’ works. Kind of shitty security if you think about it but maybe they didn’t figure anyone would be stealing our stuff from inside the labs. I guess we just keep trying boxes until we find our stuff?”

She asked mostly talking to herself at this point she leaned down and said “Open” into the next cubby box. Nothing happened although she did here the wirling of some kind of machine. So it was functional.

“Well that didn’t work. Maybe it’s time based? You can’t open more than one box at a time? Or maybe it’s voice activated? One box opened per voice? But still why bother if they can’t  tie a specific voice to a box? And where we all gonna be awakened one at a time? Because that obviously didn’t work out right.”

She mused in frustration pursing her lips and staring pensively at the opened cubby.

“ The guys around here sure do like to show off whatever the answer is. Okay new plan we try to see if we can find your ID and you open that one.”
