Charlie loved open houses at The Enrichment Center. Well-- he loved the idea of them. The parents could be kind of hit or miss, but being able to help mutants of all ages find options for themselves and feel a little better about themselves was a rush of dopamine he couldn't find anywhere else. Smoking a blunt couldn't even bring him this level of high.
Being here when he was a child did wonders for his abilities and for his self-worth, even with one of his mothers being a mutant, and therefore completely understanding of his powers. He enjoyed bringing other people in to the wonderful world that had changed his life for the better.
Xena enjoyed it too, by the looks of her. Sometimes Charlie had a lot of anxiety in public places like this, especially when he was being forced to conversate with people. This was different though, this was his natural habitat and he was doing something he knew he was good at: being charming and being convincing.
He'd let Xena off of her leash-- she hated it anyway. It was awfully restricting. He knew he could trust her, being free to roam, but he usually had the leash for the sake of other people. Some people could be so weird about a dog on the loose, even if she was just a happy-go-lucky little cocker spaniel. Xena was trotting around, doing her best emotional support animal thing, comforting the stressed-to-the-max mutants that were here for information.
Luckily he hadn't gotten any parents that were too shitty. Seemed like some of the other guild members hadn't been so lucky, especially David. Charlie couldn't help but steal some glances in his direction, and had caught the cute little clench of his jaw as he bit back how he really felt at least a couple times. He made a mental note to check in on him later.
He wrapped up a discussion with a fifteen year old that was seemingly parent-less, or at least didn't have any parents with him. He was a young man who was a late bloomer and had the power of pestilence. He feared he couldn't control it, but Charlie assured him that no matter how negatively he viewed his own power, they would be able to help him hone control of it.
Some part of Charlie felt a small measure of pride as the young mutant began filling out a contact and admission form for the Enrichment Center. It was clear that he was a little traumatized, but from what, he hadn't said. Sure, some might have pointed him in the direction of Greenfield, given that they had been invited to join the open house this year. Not Charlie. Charlie felt that one should try and love their power before simply throwing it away, no matter the trauma. Of course, that was coming from him, and he had pretty minimal trauma and found it hard to relate.
Still, Charlie had a history of distaste for Greenfield, ever since he himself was a teenager. He hadn't even remotely been thrilled to learn that Greenfield would be joining them for the first time ever this year. In fact, he almost felt as if they were poaching people that could enroll at the Center and have a much better time.
Guiltily, he shot a glance towards the Greenfield guild members, admittedly scanning the crowd for Rhys. He hadn't exactly been fair to him in the past about the whole joining Greenfield thing, and although they had rekindled their friendship, Charlie still felt just as he had years ago-- that Rhys should have stayed his ass at the Enrichment Center with him and learned to love his powers. But it was a point of contention between the two, so Charlie kept his feelings on the matter bottled up and stowed away on a figurative shelf. Part of him was relieved that it seemed that Rhys hadn't made an appearance. He enjoyed the guy, and considered him one of his close friends, yet in this environment it wouldn't have seemed wise to converse with him, given the dynamics of the situation. And also given that Charlie seemed intent to collect mutants for the Enrichment Center before Greenfield could get their grubby little hands on them.
And perhaps that was toxic of him, not wanting people to find the help that might be best for them. But that certainly didn't stop him from feeling that way.
The mutant that he had been speaking with finished up his paperwork, and handed it back to Charlie, who filed it away with a smile. "So we'll see you soon-- and please don't hesitate to let us know if you need any room and board! That is also something we happily offer to our students that need it or desire it." The young mutant thanked him and awkwardly took his leave, and Charlie was left in a brief little reverie, remembering the time his mothers brought him to an open house and enrolled him as well.
Xena's eager bark broke his reverie, and Charlie looked over at her to see her eagerly approaching David, her tail wagging to hard that her entire back half seemed to wiggle right along with it. Charlie couldn't help but laugh at her, a soft and endearing laugh that exemplified his love for her.
He watched David as he approached, and his heart warmed to the friendly greeting David gave her. Honestly, the quickest way to Charlie's heart was through his dog.
He'd fully approached by the time David stood to his full height, and Charlie felt as if his heart skipped a beat when he looked into his eyes, and quickly darted his own gaze away to relieve his nerves. His request, however, was an easy one to fulfill, and Charlie would happily do so. Any excuse to chat-- or flirt-- with David, was a good one. "Oh, gladly! Let me be your knight in shining armor." He braved another glance at David, meeting his gaze again with a goofy grin. "Can't blame you for needing a break though. Seemed as if you were biting your tongue a lot with that kids mom. That bad, huh?"
