When bonding to a new Pokémon, the effect comes gradually. Their intelligence will slowly rise until it's equal to that of a human, and he'll go from only being able to get a vague impression of their meaning to understanding them completely.

Appearance description: The first thing that stands out about Anthony is his height... He's tiny. This is due to a growth hormone deficiency that has stunted his growth. Hobbies: If you asked Anthony, he'd say things like "Reading, going for walks, training with his Pokémon" But in recent months he's been glued to his phone for an increasingly large part of every day...

Backstory: Anthony was born to a middle class family in Pastoria, his father working as a ranger in the great marsh while his mother bred Pokémon for a living... His mom gifted him a Pokémon egg for his first birthday, that egg containing a Yanma... He wasn't aware enough to really bond with the Pokémon for a while, but once he was a toddler the bug type soon became his best (and only real) friend.
Not long after that, the Yanna began to show an intelligence not natural for their species, and his parents sometimes found little Anthony having a seemingly 1-sided conversation with the bug... They saw no harm in Anthony 'playing with his imagination,' so they didn't do anything to try and stop the behaviour.
As Anthony grew up, he struggled to find many friends Caused by a combination of his short height and the fact he was constantly talking to his Pokémon like some lunatic... But Anthony didn't really mind, he still had Yanna after all!
Today, he's still looking for a job in jubilife city, his apartment being paid for by his parents for now.
