Tobi smirked as Moonlight took to her “battle stance”, thinking to himself that she was certainly meant for life as a trainer. Noticing that she sent her joltik ahead as she did, although both of her poke`mon were out of their balls, he assumed they were using standard battle rules, and therefore sent out only his hoppip; a little ball shaped poke`mon with cat-like ears and tail, 1’4” in height, weighing only 1.1lbs, with strange rotating leaf appendages extruding from its head.
He was hoping she would gain some much needed experience should he win the battle, because she was in need of learning some offensive moves.
Boy I wish I had an experience share. He thought to himself.
Without saying a word, he quickly withdrew his hoppip, who he had named Skipper, and sent out the poke`mon he had newly acquired last night, a poochyena he had named Snarls.
This poke`mon resembled a small black hyena puppy, standing at 1’8” and weighing 30lbs.
As he was carrying out these actions, Moonlight had already checked her poke`gear for information on the poke`mon, and given Little Nightmare some strategic orders.
“Little nightmare, use your thunder wave! PRZ up that cutie like you did Dopey!”
Little nightmare’s move reacted slower than the switch, as always happens in battles, and therefore it targeted the poochyena instead, causing him to become paralyzed as the jotik shook his tiny body, yellow waves of electricity emanating from him to his adversary.
“Oh you’re gonna be sneaky huh Tobi? Well Little nightmare, use spider web then so he can’t switch back!” She said.
“Snarls, use Howl!” Tobi said in response.
He could see his poke`mon was a higher level than the joltik, so decided to play the battle safe and raise Snarls’ attack before making a move.
Both poke`mon’s moves executed successfully, but having the higher speed Snarls’ attack was first, thanks to his quick feet ability countering the speed reduction from being paralyzed.
Snarls lifted his head and let loose an excited howl, then quickly looked back toward Tobi, eagerly waiting for another order as Little Nightmare spewed web onto Snarls legs, anchoring him to the ground, but not in such a way as to prevent him from moving or lower his speed.
“Oh, gross!” Tobi laughed.
“Yeah, the poke`gear says it’s supposed to keep you from calling him back into the ball until the battle is over. Ok, Now that we’ve fixed that lets give Dopey a turn!” Moonlight switched poke`mon, calling the joltik back into his ball, and sending Dopey into the fray, who actually moved quite a bit faster than expected to get into position.
“Snarls, tackle!” Tobi said, directing him toward dopey and taking nearly half his health down in one hit.
“Wow, his poke`mon are strong Moony…” Chad said nervously, but moonlight was too excited to care.
“Dopey Tackle him up!” “Snarls tackle!” Both trainers cried with vigor, giving their orders at the same time.
As the poke`mon’s body’s impacted, Dopey did barely any damage to Snarls, but snarls dealt a heavy blow again, thanks to the attack buff from his howl attack.
Looks like I’ve got this battle in the bag… Tobi thought to himself a little disappointedly.
He sort of felt bad that he might win so easily, and if he did win so easily, would it even be worth battling moonlight for experience? He might have to battle wild poke`mon for Experience after all. Maybe he’d try to raise their EVs like his father did… But that was enough reflecting.
Hehe, Tobi has no idea about Dopey’s special power thing. Moonlight though to herself.
“Dopey come back!” she said, bringing Dopey back into her ball and sending out Joltik again.
“Snarls Tackle!” He shouted, his poochyena running over and slamming against his tiny foe.
“Alright Little Nightmare, use Absorb!” and little nightmare jumped over to Snarls, landing neatly on his shoulder and sapping the life force from him, healing by 1hp as he did.
“Oh, he can heal himself with that move? Cool.” Moonlight said. “Do it again!”
“Another Tackle!” Tobi retorted. However Snarls didn’t react, he was couldn’t move due to the paralysis kicking in. This isn’t good enough, I need to be better than this. Tobi thought.
“Snarls, use another Tackle!” However Snarls failed to react once more.
Snarls rolled to the ground, shoulder slamming the joltik against the pavement and joltik took yet another 1hp from him as he did so, but was moved into the red due to Snarls’ attack, having barely any health left.
“Again little guy!” Moonlght continued, her joltik once again stealing life from his opponent.
“Snarls, Howl this time!” Tobi ordered, deciding to increase the attack power again in hopes that each successful attack will count for more now that he’s being delayed by paralysis.
“Come back Little Nightmares, its Dopey’s turn again!” Moonlight eagerly switched poke`mon back to Dopey as Tobi seemed confused.
“Wait, didn’t he have less health when you called him back? How’d he do that?” Tobi asked confused, then he shook the feeling.
“Tackle!” They both shouted, again at the same time.
Dopey and Snarls ran toward each other quickly and dramatically. “Bwow!” Dopey shouted.
“Hrrrowrr!” Snarls replied, and as they collided Dopey was pushed aside, sliding across the ground unconscious, which was surprising as Snarls was less than half Dopey’s size and weight.
“Oh man. Go Little nightmare! Try to Absorb him again!” she shouted as she sent him out.
“One last tackle!” Tobi concluded as his poochyena’s attack finished the battle, knocking the tiny tick poke`mon down before it could even get its attack in.
Moonlight called her poke`mon back into its ball.
“Sorry Moonlight, looks like we win. I feel kinda bad since my poke`mon are a lot stronger than yours right now… you can keep the fifty dollar prize money you’d normally give for the battle. I don’t need it, and besides, I just gave you that money.”
He stooped awkwardly to detach the joltik's spiderweb so that he could call Snarls back into his ball, but Moonlight only smiled at him.
“C’mon, I’ll walk you to the poke`mon center.” He offered, gesturing to the nearby building.

"you don't have to be sorry Tobi. I had a lot of fun like that was the best. I had so much fun. We need to do that a lot It was exciting....so uh how do you heal your Pokemon in this place"
"Uh.. well in Cityville you just gave your poke`balls to the nurse lady and she gives them back to you after like 30 seconds of melodious dings..."
I go up to her and hand her the balls. She takes them with a smile and then gives them back to me.
"Thank you, ma'am"
After Tobi did his Pokemon I smile at him.
"So where do we eat at Tobi. I am starving...Hmmm, what does Pokemon eat? I bet they're hungry too."
I look at him curiously.
Tobi thought for a moment, placing his hand on his chin as he did. "Well, they usually just eat each other or normal animals as rare as they are, but If I remember correctly any poke`mon in a PC or poke`ball gets nourishment as if its just eaten enough for the day, so they don't really need to eat. Most people just feed their poke`mon liquids, vitamins, and candy... pokeblocks, poffins, malsada... specialised treats that either heal thier status, health, or improve their battle or contest potential..." he then pulled another granola bar out and offered it to moonlight.
"I gotta go train and catch at least one more poke`mon before I hit the hay. You going to be alright for the night?"
"Uh... technically everything anyone eats was alive once. Except the poke`mon that eat inanimate stuff... and salt... salt's not alive.... anyway I want to battle the gym leader tomorrow, so are you going to be ok?" Tobi gave a look of slight concern, he got caught up in the battling and forgot how sensitive this girl seemed to be to... seemingly random things. A battle isn't stressful for her, but what poke`mon eat is? He had planned to try to find time to slip away again, but now he was afraid of setting off some strong emotional response, and he didn't want to feel responsible if she did something rash or misunderstood why he left. Looks like Tobi would just have to wait it out with her for a little longer.
I take the bar and go sit down on the window seat and look outside. Chad sat in front of me and smiling at me, waiting for Tobi to leave.
"Hey, moony cheer up. Pokemon need to eat. so yea"
"yea... I know Chad..do you think I am annoying Tobi like I did to Rosie and Mr. Damian...and my..family.."
"what? no, no moony Tobi likes you a lot. Your a super cute girl that's clumsy. You're not annoying if you were would I be here?"
"Thanks, Chad... You're my best friend.."
I lay down still upset about what had happened so far. I put my bag down and lay my head on it sitting the bar next to me and curled up into a little ball and closed my eyes hugging myself.
It's ok moonlight...You will get through this...You're a good girl..even if only Chad can see it.. you'll show them
I sighed and slowly go to sleep hoping I don't have any nightmare tonight.
"Ok cool, I'll probably be in and out of the poke`mon center all night, so don't let me disturb you. I'll have to sleep before taking on the gym leader, so just wake me up if you decide to leave before I do so I don't wonder what happened to you alright?" he smiled at her and headed toward the door. "Oh, and buy some poke`balls. You're going to want more poke`mon if you want to become a better trainer." With that he left the poke`mon center.
Damian glanced sideways at Rosie as she gave her pep talk.
"Geez kid relax," Damian chuckled, "S'all just jokes"
As they reached the lab, Damian held the door open for Rosie and then followed her in. He then approached the nearest aide and tapped them on the shoulder.
"Excuse me," he said with a smile, "dobyou know where Redwood is at the moment?"
"Oh, Damian! I thought you'd graduated. Is there a problem with things? I certainly hope not, you'll find him in his office doing some paperwork. Apparently one of the staff members gave a trainer the wrong egg... He's been on the phone all morning, but I believe he's as free as he gets right now." Said the aid, who's name was Hemway.
Redwood sighed as he looked up from the various paperwork he had procrastinated. "It's open..." he groaned. Upon seeing Damian he started to laugh, a little giddy from not getting much sleep. "Missing someone?" he smiled, waiting for Rosie and Damian's reaction.
"Yeah, she took a shortcut through the daycare center. Brave little rascal hopped the fence somewhere probably near two am. There were poke`mon running around in here too, but I was here so it ended up being fine. As far as the egg situation it wasn't a new trainer, it was someone who dropped their pokemon off to breed a few days ago. Apparently the day before yesterday there was a mixup and a couple of trainers got eachother's eggs, but we just found out this morning when they hatched. Boy did I get the earful... Gregory must have really been stressed by all the extra responsibilities this week. He must have thought I would fire him too because I haven't even seen him since I had him hand out the luxury balls." Redwood scratched his head and started flipping through papers. "So what's up guys? Just wanted to check on Moonlight? She's probably half way between here and Tarton by now, so good luck catching up. Daycare's closed down for the day too due to the... uh... incident."
"A-a-a-aha! Y-y-yes, I-I know! St-still!" Rosie shyly babbled quietly, her face tomato red and then keeping her mouth shut afterward.
She knew he didn't really mean it deep down, but she didn't want him to get used to insulting himself, even playfully, because then he'd constantly do so.
Even so, She was embarrassed her mouth went and blabbed on it's own again, and nodded at his response, hanging her head and looking away as they made their way to the good Professors lab, too embarrassed to talk and say anything as they met more Aides.
She did smile and wave at the Professor once they reached his office, however, not letting her bashful nature tarnish her manners.
Her face did light up, however, once her reassured them Moonlight was safe and in fact did stop by... but it dropped once he mentioned she was already so ahead of them there was no way they'd catch up due to the Egg problems...
"Oh no..." Rosie muttered, not only did she want to see Moonlight again, but she also wanted to get to Tarton as soon as possible, to possibly receive another message from her mother, adding a question to Redwood, "So, what should we do, Professor...? I-if we can't take the shortcut to catch up with her, how will we catch up to Moonlight?"
Redwood chuckled a little bit at their responses, he almost felt bad for making it sound like he wouldn't help them, but of course he didn't it was funny as fuck. "Hey, I never said you couldn't take the shortcut. I said the daycare was closed for the day. You seem to be forgetting that I own the place." Redwood pulled out a set of keys and started to walk out of the lab, leading the trainers to the daycare center, through the play yard, and into the daycare building, unlocking the front door and opening it to show them through. "If you head through here you should only be a few hours behind her, with the exception of any delays. Watch for trainers now, and for the record, this never happened." he warned as he winked at the new trainers.
Rosie smiled at the Professor as he helpfully guided them to the shortcut to catch up to Moonlight. She had hours ahead of them, so every little bit helps. She was so optimistic of finding Moonlight again in a timely manner she sort of starting writing an apology speech internally.
She was brought out of her daze when Damian asked her her feelings on beginning her new pokemon journey.
"O-oh! Uhm!" Rosie began, unsure how to answer, exactly.
Yesterday was the most surreal, odd, horrible, amazing day of her life. She was pretty sure most trainers didn't go through that day one.
She was looking forward to bonding and spending time with Poseidon, but if her first day was an indicator as to how crazy the rest of her journey will be... Perhaps she shouldn't exactly be looking forward to the future...
"W-well, I'm excited to spend more time with my new Pokemon, but..." Rosie sort of trailed off while taking her pokeball out of her purse, but not releasing her peppy Popplio, adding, "I-I... I really hope the rest of my journey is more... calm? Ahahaha..."
She might not be with them much longer if she had to backtrack to her house in a week due to the repairs... In fact..
"Uhm... I have to go back to my house to let the repairman in on thursday... I... I don't know if I'll be able to catch up to you or Moonlight when that happens..." She informed him, unsure and almost afraid sounding of being alone.
I woke up in the morning feeling better about last night’s talk with Chad. I decided that I was going to go out and find a real breakfast for me and Tobi, not that granola stuff.
He’s been so nice to me, It’s my turn to be nice to him, today I’m going to show Tobi I’m not some mopey girl.
I ask around for a good place to find sweets, what I meant was pastries like pies or Cinna buns or something, but everyone I asked just kept telling me about Rage Candy Bars being sold in one of the Poke`marts. I needed to go there later anyway, but I don’t know what that is and candy bars are basically just granola bars with chocolate, so it was the opposite of what I was looking for.
I smell something sweet in the air that reminds me of those toaster pop frosting things my mom makes. I can’t say the word, so I won’t say the word.
As I follow my nose to the source, like a werewolf detective, it leads me to an automotive garage. I can now also smell the grease and other man stinks. There were a few people in here, about three, and I found the source of the smell!
There was a pretty blonde lady dressed all punky style leaning down with a saucer plate thingy to hand it to a messy-haired goggle wearing dude who was lounging on a dog bed for some reason.
I look at him confused, then he looks at me, taking the toothpick out of his mouth and flicking it across the room, hitting one of the workers in the head with it.
“Oww man… not cool bro.”
“Shuddup Jimmy. You.” He points at me and stands up, ignoring the girl’s attempt to hand him the warm pastries. How could he do that???
“What are you doi-” I was going to say ‘what are you doing, she’s handing you good pastries, take it for the love of god!’ but he covered my mouth for some reason.
“You look too young to have a car. Step outside.” He said, then he turned me around and grabbed my shoulders, walking me forcefully outside.
“Hey-hey! You forgot your dessert feast!”
He didn’t seem to care, but as I looked back I saw the pretty lady look a little irritated, but she just sat on a stool near the dog bed and started eating them.
Well at least somebody gets it. I thought
“I don’t see a bike either, what do you want kid?” He asked gruffly.
“I smelled heaven so I came to get some. I can buy it from you of course.” I said proudly.
“What? We’re not a diner, scram you, little hobo.” He said.
“Screw you!” I said, noticing the lady was yelling “Axel!” all insulted like as I did.
He looked back at her for a second, so I continued.
“I came here to buy some pastries if I could, all they have in town is rage bars, whatever the fuck that is! Can I buy some from her, not you, since you obviously didn’t make it?” I said as sassy as I could. “It’s not like you’re eating them…” I added under my breath.
The guy looked like he was about to say something not very nice, but the lady came over and stuffed a crumpled pastry in his mouth when it opened, wiping the mess from her hands off onto the red T-shirt he wore underneath his fur-lined leather jacket.
“Shut it nimrod.” She said. “Come on Sweety you can have some free.” She said, leading me away from the auto shop and to a house nearby.
“Hehehe, you showed him moonie.” Chad snickered, but then his face paled as he noticed something the other direction. “MOONY THE GYM’s ATTACHED TO THAT GUYS CAR BARN!”
“What really? Shit!” I said in response to Chad, whipping around to look mortified at him.
“Uh… yes, do free things scare you?” Said the lady, who was now confused.
“Uh… no, I’m just talking to my imaginary friend. I know he’s imaginary, but here’s there ok, don’t judge me. I’ve had a bad two days.” I said nervously.
“Alright then, as long as he behaves I’ll make him some too. I heard imaginary friends are shy eaters, so I’ll pack his to go.” She smiled as she offered.
Chad looked her up and down. “I’d like to pack her to go…” He muttered.
“Chad you pervert!” I said immediately, turning and punching him in the shoulder as hard as I could.
“Ow! Moony what was that for?” Chad whined.
“That’s for you being a pervert is what it’s for, you asshole!” I said in response.
As we got into the house it looked kinda cramped, but well kept. Apparently, she liked living in a neat little box or something, which made chads comment about packing her up even more irritating.
I glare at chad.
“What?” he asked. “You know what,” I whispered in response. “Jealous?” he asked as he smirked. “Fuck you butthole,” I whispered again.
I look at the nice lady, who was pretending not to notice what I was doing.
“I’m sorry for yelling at the messy haired guy, he was just being mean.”
She smiled at me as she reached for a box of toaster thingies.
“That’s ok, sometimes men need a little backtalk to remind them they’re mortal.”
I laugh and side glance at Chad, who didn’t really seem to think that was very funny.
“I’m not mortal… I’m unmortal!”
“You’re not unmortal, I made you up, so you’re whatever I want you to be. Which apparently right now is an idiot.”
Chad frowned at me all irritated like and looked out a window.
“So who’s the gym leader? Is it you? Please tell me it’s you and not him. I made him mad.”
She laughed and set a plate down in front of me with 4 warm pastries, and a ziplock baggy with 4 more warm pastries. She must think I’m a fatty.
“Everyone makes him mad, he’s a man. Anyway, he is the Tarton gym leader, his name is Axel. Were you thinking of trying to get the badge?” she asked curiously.
“No… I wanted to know if he has seen my brother… He’s been gone a long time since I was little, and I’m looking for him ‘cuz the rest of my family disowned me. I figure he probably did the gym challenge cuz basically every trainer does.” I explained as I bit into my food.
“Oh…” she started, looking very sad for me.
“I don’t really have a very nice family either… So I’m sorry to hear that. When you’re done eating we’ll go ask him ok?” she rubbed my back, I think to comfort me. I like this lady.
“You don’t have to be sad. I got over it, they’re crazy… They tried to kill me with a gun, and shot off Dopey’s tail! They think I joined a cult I guess… whatever that means.” I took another bite of my food and she looked even more concerned. I wonder how come everyone does that when I tell them this stuff.
“Well… Let’s keep that between you and me and not mention it to Axel OK? He’s... sort of impulsive…” She seemed worried when she said that. I started to wonder if Axel was even meaner than I thought.
I look a little worried as I finish my food.
“Do you want anything to drink?” She offered.
“Water, please. I’m pretty thirsty. I haven’t drank anything in like two days.” I said, and she looked even more concerned.
“You can’t do that sweetie you need to make sure you eat and get your water! You know you can get water free at any poke`mon center if you don’t have any money, and there’s fresh water at pretty much every vending machine.”
“I did not know that. I haven’t got out much. I’m here with Tobi though, he’s sleeping in the… poke`center?”
“Poke`mon Center. Well, maybe I should talk to your friend and ask him to keep a better eye on you… how old are you?”
“No, you can’t do that! I need to prove to people that I’m not… eh… retarded. I’ve been called retarded a bunch of times and I want to prove to people they’re wrong! And I’m 13.”
She looked a little upset again. Apparently, I’m good at that.
“Who calls you retarded? How old is this Tobi person? Do you have any poke`mon to keep you safe or does this Tobi person do that for you…?”
I wasn’t really sure why she was getting so worked up, I was the one they were always being mean to not her, and I was fine.
“Well… only Emily actually called me retarded, but everyone treats me like I’m a baby who can’t do anything. They always lecture me and caudle me and it's super annoying. The worst part is some of the people only started treating me like that after she called me retarded, so they obviously think that. I think Tobi’s 13 too, but I don’t know. I have two poke`mon, a slowpoke and a joltik.”
The worry started fading from her face, but I could tell by the questions she was probably just hiding it.
“Did this Tobi fella tell you he was 13? Does he ask you to… do anything for him in exchange for protection or anything like that?”
I laugh at her question. It was pretty weird.
“No, after I told him I gave my money away to Rosie since I destroyed her bathroom catching my joltik, he gave me 300 dollars and taught me about pokemon battles. I know what PRZ means now, and how to read my poke`gear, and about types advantages and stuff. He’s Professor Redwood’s son, and he got his poke`mon when I did so I think he’s 13 too, but so did Mr. Damian… and he’s pretty old… Not grandpa old but old like Axel. Anyway, I guess the professor’s kind of a big deal or something cuz everyone’s always yelling at him, and Tobi said he watched a bunch of videos of his dad to learn stuff about battles.”
Alex seemed kind of surprised.
“Finbar Redwood? Yeah, he’s kind of famous. He’s like Axel’s secret hero, but don’t tell him I told you that.” She chuckled.
“Sorry for worrying you, I do that a lot. That’s why I left Rosie and Mr. Damian. I think it’s because my parents didn’t teach me much about people, so maybe I act funny or something.”
“That’s ok,” she responded. “Most people suck anyway. Come on, let’s go ask Axel about your brother.”
She took the plate, which was now empty after I licked the leftover jelly and frosting off of it, and put it in the sink, then gestured for me to follow her back outside.
I follow her back to the garage, feeling a little nervous now because of finding out he’s the gym leader. When we got there he was working on a car under the hood, apparently he does more than just lay about and do gym leader stuff.
I look at her, hoping she’ll start the conversation with me.
“Axel, can you come here please.” She asked.
“What?” He said, not moving from where he was.
“I said, can you come here please?” She asked again, this time using a tone I heard mom use a lot on dad.
He looked up at her, then he looked at me. I hid behind her a little bit. He then lowered his goggles onto his eyes and put a toothpick in his mouth, going back to working under the hood instead of doing what she was asking.
She looked pissed. She walked over and grabbed him by his hair with one hand and his hood with the other, then dragged him out of the room, him complaining the whole way.
I wasn’t sure what she was saying to him because it was muffled. And there were other sounds too. I was kinda pretty sure he was gonna die.
I stood there awkwardly, thinking I should probably leave, and Axel came back out of the room, not wearing his goggles at all.
“What?”
He said as he walked over to me, leaving the door open.
“Uh… I’m sorry for being mean to you earlier, I’ve been stressed out… and people are new to me… I was wondering if my brother, Luther Shadow, fought you in the gym… He’s my only family now and I’m looking for him…”
“What do I look like, a babysitter?” he asked. I then saw the lady come back out of the room, with a boot in her hand. She threw it at the back of his head.
“Fuck, WOMAN! WHAT!?”
She gave him another look, that most likely meant something.
“Nevermind… I’m gonna go now…” I said disappointedly. I started walking off, but the Axel guy grabbed my sleeve.
“Tell you what. You beat me in a battle I’ll try to remember. Sometimes Alex likes to take pictures of trainers beating their very first gym, so we could ask her if she has any copies if you win.”
“I’m not gonna win.” I laugh. “I lost against Tobi and he only used one poke`mon, I used both of mine.”
“So train.” He said, but when he turned around he saw the look I mentioned Alex having and turned back around, looking uncomfortable.
“Tell you what, if I lose I’ll help you. You find someone who can beat me, and I’ll do it. I just think since you’re an adult you should learn how to earn things yourself. Without handouts.” He said, looking back at Alex for the last part, who rolled her eyes at him.
I smile back at him. “Okay, I think I can do that, but what’s a hands outs?”
“I think it’s when you stick your hands out like this.” Says the guy Axel called Jimmy, and Chad at the same time, both sticking out their hands, but then the Jimmy guy started doing a funny dance.
Chad started to laugh. “He’s doing the Macarena!”
I laugh too, apparently, Alex had her own idiots.
“I’ll see you soon!” I say, running back to the poke`mon center. I run over and jump on Tobi, who was still sleeping, landing with my knees on him and my arms on either side of his head, face to face.
“TOBI I NEED YOU!” I began, Tobi’s eyes went really wide and he turned as red as a Magikarp, and even started flopping around like one to scoot back from me.
“I got some breakfast pastries, even though I forgot it at Alex’s house, but I need you to do me a huuuuuuge favor that’ll help me find my brother. I need you to have your poke`mon beat up Axel’s poke`mon like they did to my poke`mon, and I’ll love you forever if you do this for me!” I practically beg.
He started talking, but I couldn’t understand him.
“blamda lsrbar blglarbog dop?” He said, then he blinked and shook his head. “What?”
I look at him a little worried. “Are you ok Tobi?”
“Glbbableblebleble”
"I think you broke him," Chad said, chuckling a little.
“You look kinda sick… your face is all red…” I put my hand on his head to feel his temperature, but he feels fine probably. I don’t actually know how to tell.
I take my poke`gear out and point it at him.
“Is Tobi sick?” I ask it. No response. “Worth a try.”
Meanwhile, chad was laughing his ass off and on the floor. I had no idea why.
“Chad this isn’t funny, What if Tobi’s sick?” I said angrily.
“I’m not sick,” Tobi said, having finally wiggled out and was sitting up in front of me.
“Sure I can battle this Axel guy if it means that much to you…. But we’ll have to come back here to heal up so I can battle the gym leader afterword.”
“Uh Tobi,” I said. “Axel is the gym leader.”
“Oh…” Tobi said nervously. “Then I’ll try my hardest. I was going to battle him first thing this morning anyway.” He said, pulling a granola bar out of his bag.
I snatch the “food” from him. “No, I got warm pastries from heaven that melt in your mouth! No more garbage food. Come with me!”
I grab Tobi’s hand and drag him back to Alex’s house to get the pastries.
“The gym is over there Moonlight…” Tobi said.
“Oh I know, I’m giving you heaven first,” I said, opening Alex’s door and walking inside to grab the baggie of food from the table.
I turn to hand it to Tobi and his face is red again.
“Uh, Thanks.” He said, sitting down to eat the food.
I sit there and wait for him to finish.
“Did she say you can just barge in like that?” he asked curiously.
“Well, she did give me the food and I forgot it. She’s really nice too, and pretty. I hope I look like her when I grow up. Chad has a crush on her.” I say teasingly, nudging Chad.
“I do not, I just wouldn’t pass up an opportunity if you get my meaning.” He said, doing pervy eyebrows.
“You’re gross Chad, Tobi’s eating!” I say. “Oh wait, Tobi can’t see you that’s right.”
Tobi finishes eating and washes his hands. “Ok should we go to the gym now?” he asks.
“Mhmm.” I say and we walk over to the garage where Axel is. Tobi tried to keep going toward the gym but I grab his hand to stop him.
“He’s in here Tobi,” I say as I pull him into the garage.
It looked like Axel wasn’t in here anymore, but Alex was. She was sitting at a computer helping a customer, who looked kinda irritated.
“What do you mean it’s not ready?” he asked her.
“Well, there was a lot to do with your vehicle sir…” I heard her begin to explain, but Moonlight doesn’t have time for that. I looked around and saw that Jimmy guy, dragging Tobi over to him.
“Hey, Jimmy,” I said.
Tobi looked confused. “I thought you said his name was Axel?”
“What? I’m not Axel I’m Jimmy, who are you?”
“Tobi.” He responded.
“No I said I’m Jimmy, not Tobi, now who are you?”
“Axel, No, I mean Jimmy, I’m Tobi.”
“Wait you’re Axel Too? My Bosses Name is Axel. Who’s Tobi then?”
“What? That’s not what I meant… My name’s Tobi.”
“Oh. Hi, Tobi, I’m Jimmy.”
“I’m Chad.” Chad pipped in.
“Oh god boys you’re both pretty! Now, where’s Axel??” I say frustratedly.
“He’s In the Gym now.” Says Jimmy.
I dragged Tobi over to the gym and tried to walk inside, but Tobi did a double take as he saw two poke`mon statues outside. “That’s cool,” Tobi muttered. “Not now silly, we can look at those later,” I said, pulling his hand again, still holding it tightly.
“Wait how come I’m not pretty? Or did you mean me and Jimmy? Or me and Tobi?” Chad bothered as we walked down the path.
“Hold it bub.” Said a kind of scary looking biker dude who stepped in to block the way. “Where do you think you’re going?”
I jump back behind Tobi after he scared the crap out of me.
“Don’t do that! Jumping out of the shadows and stuff!”
“Uh… We’re here to challenge Ax- I mean so I can challenge Axel to a battle for the gym badge.” Tobi said hesitantly.
The man laughed heartily, as did other, also kind of scary, also kind of biker looking dudes who were also in the room. Looks like there was about three of them. I leaned around Tobi to get a better look and saw Axel lazily sitting on a stone chair, shaped like a motorcycle laying on its side, but with cushions on it. Around the chair was an area large enough to battle, with an engraving of a fist holding a chain in the center between the “throne” and a little bridge that went over some mud?
Why would mud be in his gym? It was all around the stone floor area surrounding his chair, with just that bridge going across it, and there was about 15 feet worth of that mud between his section and the section the biker dudes and us were on. What confused me the most though wasn’t the mud, it was several statues of ladies here and there throughout the mud area, most of which seemed like they were either having a slumber party or going to the beach. Some of them even had stone pillows they were posed to hit each other with.
“Don’t you know how this works kid? You gotta battle any trainers in your way in order to get to the gym leader. Don’t worry though, if you’re too scared to do us all in one big shot you can visit the poke`mon center and come back for more. You only have to battle each of us once. Normally the rules also say you don’t have to battle any trainers you can sneak past, but the boss has this place set up to where there’s nowhere to hide.”
The boys laugh.
“You can hide in the mud Tobi,” I suggest.
“That’s a good idea. What about the mud?” Tobi asks.
The biker shook his head.
“Nope. We know you’re here. You gotta get past without us seeing you at all for that. Them’s the rules kid.”
“Well, those rules fucking suck, where are the rules posted? How are we supposed to know that?” I say grumpily at the guy.
“Heh, she’s kinda like an Alex doll. Be careful Tay or maybe she’ll kick your ass too.”
“Shut up Ran, I told you the boss gave me those bruises, not Alex!” he said angrily.
“It’s posted on the pillars there.” He points to a statue pillar behind us by the doors against the wall with large poke`ball statues on top of them.
“Official poke`mon league statues right there.” He said.
I moved around from behind Tobi, getting in front of him now and getting in his face.
“Well, they’re posted there, so even if we come in you already see us, why isn’t it outside on the door! It’s not fair Alex said- I mean Axel said we just have to beat him! He didn’t say anything about you goonies!” I said still angry.
“Uh… maybe not make them mad moonlight… one of them has mutton chops…” Chad said all scared like.
“I don’t make the rules kid, the league does. And it’s up to the gym leader to design the room. If the boss wants you to go through us before you get to him, then that’s what the boss gets.” He looked back at Axel when he said this, as if looking for approval, and Axel took the toothpick out of his mouth and waved.
“What’s wrong kid.” Axel asked from afar. “Scared your boyfriend’s gonna lose to these chumps?”
“I’mma tell Alex on you, She’ll use her mom voice again and beat you up in the back room again!” I retorted.
The biker guys laughed, but Tobi just looked lost.
“Boyfriend?” Tobi muttered to himself.
“Am I your boyfriend?” He asked.
“Not now Tobi, I’m busy.” I said, only half listening to what he said, not really sure what the big deal was.
“You said just you Axel, this isn’t very fair.” I said. “Aren’t adults not supposed to lie or something?”
“First of all kid, I said if I lose I’ll help you. I didn’t say you wouldn’t have to battle anyone else to get me to lose first, secondly, adults pull this shit all the time so get used to it. League rules, if you want help earn it. Quit whining like a baby, hand your diaper to your boyfriend and put on your big girl skirt. You want your brother to be proud of you don’t ya?”
“I see how it is. You’re scared hiding behind your goonies. Why don’t you come up to my face and say it you little bitch!”
“Why you little…” Axel said, clearly angry. He started storming over, flicking his toothpick from his mouth and grabbing one of his goons on the way by, pushing them behind him into the mud. Which ended up being deeper than it looked.
“You don’t like the rules, get outta my gym, I don’t have time for bratty entitled little attitudes!” Axel said.
“I challenge you.” Tobi said before I could respond.
“Are you deaf? I just told you-“
“The statue says ‘If a trainer can make it to the gym leader before being forced into a battle by his accompanying trainers then so long as he wins he will not have to battle any trainers he did not battle on the way to the gym leader. It then goes on to say that the trainers have to avoid noticing you for it to count, but because I got to the gym leader before the battle started I can challenge you first, then them. It doesn’t really say that part but it’s pretty obvious.”
Axel just blinked at him.
“What, you don’t like the rules big guy?” Tobi said smiling.
Everyone was silent, except chad, who was laughing his ass off again.
“Today is a good day to be Chad.” He said.
“Does that count?”Said one of the bikers quietly to the other.
Axel smirked a little.
“You got balls kid. Be careful what you wish for.”
“Clear the way!” Axel shouted, and the biker’s did what they were told.
Tobias took a few steps back and one deep breath, taking out his first poke`ball and preparing himself for the most important moment in his life so far.
Moonlight leaned over to his ear and whispered. “Good luck, I know you can do it.” Before walking over to one of the poke`ball statues to ensure she wouldn’t be in the way.
“Forty bucks says the brat won’t even get past his first.” One of the biker’s guessed, as Tobi could hear them placing wagers.
“…Scared your Boyfriend’s gonna…”
“I NEED YOU.”
“…diaper to your boyfriend…”
“I’ll love you forever…”
“…boyfriend…”
“I’m giving you heaven first…”
“…love you forever…”
These words and moonlight’s smiling face so close to his were all racing through his mind in a confusing swarm of emotion and uncertainty as his heart raced, hoping he was prepared for what was to come.
Axel took his stance and pulled out a small poke`ball, releasing his first poke`mon, which was a houndour.
This small, doglike poke`mon resembled a Rottweiler in a skull helm, only being two feet tall this black and red pokemon weighed over 23lbs and looked as mean as its master.
Tobi swallowed hard and heavy, trying to keep his cool for his audience. “Go Skitter! Lets do this, Infestation!”
He released his spinarak from his ball and gave it orders that were intended to strategic. This little spider looking poke`mon may have only had six legs, but at 1’8” and almost 19lbs it was more than your average bug. Green, and marked with a smile on its abdomen, its Infestation attack was a move that infected a poke`mon with tiny parasites that would do damage to the opponent at the end of every turn.
“A bug type huh? Bully for you, kid. Houndour use ember and split him open like a micro waved hotdog!”
The houndour , who was level 12, and was much faster than Tobi’s string spit poke`mon, acted quickly, spewing forth dim, but glowing hot flecks of flame that hit Skitter hard in the face, puffing apart like a snowball breaking on a tree.
Unfortunately for Tobias, the supper effective move K.O.’d his spinarak in one hit. Not a good sign.
Ok, maybe it’s a fire type pokemon then, I’ll use my psyduck. He thought to himself as he returned Skitter to his ball.
“Bill, you can do it! Use Watersport to weaken those fire type moves!”
“Houndour, Smog!” Axel expertly responded.
His houndour spewing a thick purple gas that billowed from his open jaws, enveloping the duck poke`mon with an impact that looked almost solid.
With a look rivaling the inattentiveness of even Dopey, Bill began spraying watter all over the gym room floor, his three black hairs wiggling back and forth on top of his head as he dampened things in such a way as to cause the fire moves to become weaker from this point on.
“Payback!” “Watergun!” The trainers cried without missing a beat.
Houndour lunged across the gym floor toward the 43.2lb 2’7” yellow pokemon, checking him below the arm and landing a critical blow. Such a force of impact it was that it ended up knocking him off his little webbed feet about two yards away, leaving him with only 6 health according to Tobias’ Poke`gear.
As Bill slid along the ground, he opened up his, well, bill, and spewed a shot of water from his mouth with great force, hitting and splattering on houndour’s face like a breaking water balloon.
Houndour, now at half health, shook his head, droplets of water flying around him.
“Yeah, that’s the way! Wait, what’s he doing?” Tobi started, confused by houndour’s next movements.
He kicked his leg, and out from the cuff around his paw fell a small berry, that he then ate, which in turn caused Tobi’s poke`gear to read something strange. According to this the houndour just healed a decent chunk of health from the berry.
“What is that???” Tobi asked startled.
“It’s an oran berry kid, they grow like weeds around these parts.” he laughed.
“Houndour, payback!”
“Huh uh, nope.” Tobi said as he switched Bill out for his electric mouse poke`mon.
Hopefully Scamp’s static ability will paralyze the houndour and we can finish him with a second water gun before he can have his turn. Tobi thought, realizing now this was going to be harder than even he suspected to begin with.
As the Pikachu appeard from its ball, the houndour slid hard into the 1’4” yellow rabbit looking creature, knocking his meager 13.2lb butt for a loop with somehow another critical hit.
“Wow, you’re on fire today!” Axel celebrated after letting out yet another hearty laugh, causing the bikers around him reveling in their own laughter after his unintentional pun.
Damn, 14 hp left according to my poke`gear. That’s just under half his total… what am I going to do?
Tobias thought to himself, feeling himself beginning to panic.
Damn it, I need to paralyze him, it’s the only way. “Scamp, quick attack!” he shouted, causing Axel to snap out of his laughing fit and give orders of his own.
“Payback!” he called again to his houndour, but before he could act the Pikachu bolted to the side and darted back toward him, slamming into the side of his head and causing him to roll on the ground before standing back up and leap savagely into the Pikachu, knocking it out cold.
Nice move kid, you even put him back down to half way, but no dice. Axel smugly commented as Tobi sent Snarls into the frey.
Damn it, I was really counting on that static ability to work.
“Payback again houndour.” Axel ordered. “Sand attack!” Tobi called, once again hoping his brain would get him where his poke`mon’s brawn clearly wouldn’t.
Houndour hit again first, but luckily it wasn’t effective against Snarls, who responded by kicking sand into his eyes.
The trainers continued their same orders for 3 more turns, until Snarls was left at only one hp.
Yes, that last attack missed, I think I’ve gotten what I needed from this. Tobi thought.
“Snarl’s Bite him!” he shouted as Axel ordered another payback, causing minor damage after yet another miss from the houndour.
“Damn, it’s not very effective either.”
“Houndour Ember!” Axel shouted, but not in time. Tobi switched to Bill, who would have been more resistant had he not missed again.
“Very good kid, looks like you’re getting somewhere.” Axel praised.
“Watergun!” “Payback!” “NO!” Were the following set of words as Axel’s houndour finally managed to land another hit, knocking the psyduck out cold.
Great, there goes my type advantage… Tobi thought, becoming even more nervous as the battle went on.
Tobias sent Snarls out once again, who he ordered to do a tackle attack as houndour missed with a payback. Another tackle as houndour missed with an ember finally fainted the houndour, landing Snarl’s a much needed experience boost.
“YEAH!” Tobi cheered as he jumped into the air, finally glad to have taken down at least one pokemon.
“Pay up punk.” Could be heard from the bikers as Axel sent out his next poke`mon, which was a larvitar.
“Good job kid, I didn’t expect you to take out the houndour. You got OK strategy for the most part. Larvitar, start up a sandstorm!” Axel said.
Sandstorm? Oh no. Tobi thought. “Snarls use sand attack!” He knew he didn’t have much time, and the sand attack did land, but as the sandstorm whipped up and began to rage the sand pelted the poor pooch penniless, causing him to faint and forcing Tobias to call him back into his poke`ball.
Rats… hopefully he misses enough from just one. Tobi thought as he sent out his Hoppip.
“Skip, use tail whip!” he ordered, hoping to lower the poke’mon’s defense.
Tobi had never seen this type of poke`mon before, but he had heard of the move sandstorm and heard that most trainers only teach it to rock, ground, or steel types to avoid damaging themselves, so he figured its defense could stand to get lowered.
“Bite him.” Axel ordered. The larvitar lunged forward on its two stubble little legs, bringing its two foot tall 150lb body closer to sink it’s teeth into the hoppip, dealing over a third of his health in damage and sunk its teeth into hoppip, which cried out in pain.
Unfortunately, the tailwhip was ineffective.
“Heal up with Synthesis!” Tobi ordered, but no good.
“Payback!” Axel ordered, and the larvitar punched the hoppip in the face, knocking it cold.
Damn, should I forfeit? I know I’m going to lose now… he’s too strong for Scrapes to win by himself… No, I have to just take it. Otherwise I’ll look like a wimp or a quitter.
“Go Scrapes!” He shouted as he summoned forth his Tyrogue, a small human-like pokemon. Like the’s other pokemon, he was around 2 feet tall, but he weighed around 46lbs.
“Scrapes Fake out!” He called as Axel ordered another attack, but due to the fake out, the larvitar flinched instead.
Luckily for Tobi the sandstorm cleared up at this point.
“Thank god…” He muttered.
The rest of the battle was rather anti climactic unfortunately, as all of the larvitar’s moves were “not very effective” on the fighting type tyrogue, and because of this tactics did change slightly. The larvitar ended the battle after using screech to lower his defense quite a bit, and then initiating a knock-out bite.
“Can’t say that was the worst I’ve seen anyone do, but you really should have battled the boys first.” Axel said as he called his pokemon back, walking back toward his “throne” and leaving the room through a right side door, shutting it behind him.
Tobi trudged over to where Moonlight was standing with a heavy heart. “Sorry Moonlight… I thought I could win…”

Tobi looked upset about losing I smile at him and hug him.
"Its OK Tobi you did your best."
I pulled back and give him a grin my hands still on his shoulders.
"you were so cool out there Tobi. you got one down and theirs always a next time to beat up that butt-head. So don't be sad okay?"
"uh.. what about your brother?"
"it will be okay I'll find him in the next town where the other gym leaders are they must have seen him."
" No, I will try to beat him again so you don't have to wait. Just let me train and catch more Pokemon. This hoppit is terrible"
I laugh a little and let go of his shoulders.
"okay Tobi. I know you can do it I be-leave in you"
"we should go to the Pokemon center to heal up my Pokemon"
I nod and we walk out the gym heading to the Pokemon center. I am happy and excited about the battle that was sooooo kool.Chad was walking next to us.
"I would have won it for you moony."
I roll my eyes at chad and smile at him cuz hes being silly.Chad starts pouting and i laugh a bit. When we get to the center he healed up he Pokemon. He was quit the whole way there. I look at him and nudge him in the ribs softly with my elbow.
"Cheer up Tobi."
His face went red when I nudge his ribs.
" uh... did you tell them in your boyfriend?"
"Uh... no why"
" Axel called me your boyfriend... twice... Didn't you hear him..?"
His face was still red and he was acting nervous. I think back to the gym.
"he did moony and you did not deny it. Ohhhh you like Tobi too don't you."
chad says as he nudges me.
"I told you he like likes you. you better answer him girl"
My face goes red and Chad says that stuff to me.
Me.. like like Tobi..Uh...I haven't thought of that before..does he really like me. why would he..I better answer before he gets more nervous...gahahahaha i am nervous too know damn it... I don't wanna make this more awkward... if he doesn't like like me..
I nervously mess with my hands and look down at them all awkward like now super shy.
"uh..um.. I...I don't know..uh, I was not paying that much attention.. like I should have..Uh..I don't Know y they thought that we were together..uh like why would you like me like that..is what i mean..uh..um.."
I get really quiet as I talk to him all shy like not looking at Tobi's face kinda scared that he will react badly.
We both stand there super awkwardly for like a full minute. but it feels like forever waiting for each other to say something.
"Draw Pilgrim!" Chad said making a western standoff stance and finger gun.
" uhh... so am I...?...your...?"
He cut off before he finished and swallowed hard.
"uh, sir. your Pokemon?" The nurse lady says to Tobi with that he reaches over with one hand not looking where he's grabbing. Grabes his belt and puts it in his vest.
"..uh...I don't know..uh..do..you..uh..like like me...?"
chad puts his head on my shoulder "god guys who taught you grammar... seem like he's not man enough for you moony move on"
"uh...mm..y-.. uh..ye-s.."
Tobi stared at me for a second and slowly took off his hat like he was trying to avoid angering a curled seviper. He slowly turned it around and dropped it on top of my head.
"KayI'llbeyourboyfriendlaterbye." He said super fast and backed quickly out of the poke`Mon center. Looking straight ahead, not really at anyone or anything.
I watched him leave confused as all hell. I go and sit down on a couch my face still slightly red with Tobi's hat on my head.
"We can definitely swing back then," Damian said with a smile.
He walked next to Rosie down the path towards Tarton, eager to begin training Slugger, admittedly for selfish reasons...
After hours of walking night began to fall upon them, and Damian suggested they rest for the night. Despite his best efforts to stay awake, he was still out of practice since his college days, and soon drifted into a restless slumber...
Darkness. In a second nothing could be seen, then just as quick there were eyes. Menacing. Hungry. The air was cold, damp. Hissing could be heard from all around, yet nowhere at all. The air became colder and smelled like sulfur. The eyes smiled, how long had they done so? It was as if someone had carved a set of jagged teeth into the darkness when no one was looking, yet how could they? The eyes were everywhere. Closer now, louder now, the hissing continued, drilling itself deeper, deeper, and deeper still. The air was frost now, biting and tearing as the smell became the air. Breathing was strained now, numbness overtaking. A jagged smile emits a shrill laugh. Breathing stopped, panic overtaking, movement impossible, escape impossible, survival impossible. The jagged smile stops laughing. Eyes still menacing, still hungry, never satisfied.
Damian's eyes snapped open as he woke suddenly. He didn't jolt upright this time, he had been expecting it. He sighed and got up from the ground.
He and Rosie had walked for several more hours when he saw Tarton in the distance.
He eyed a patch of tall grass, thinking of how torn he was between catching up to Moonlight, and training his new lil' buddy. He quickly devised a way to K.O. two Pidgey with one Rock-Type move.
"The answer is Rock Slide" Damian thought, chuckling at his own terrible joke before turning and speaking to Rosie.
"I'm gonna stop and train Slugger here for a bit. You're welcome to join me, but if you'd rather catch up with Moonlight I'll meet you at the Tarton Pokémon Center when I'm done."
Rosie walked with Damian, happy to have company on her journey. She breathed easy despite having no stamina nor endurance to travel on foot for long distances or periods of time, because as the day ended she was happy to find her second day as a trainer was very uneventful in comparison to her first.
They rested for the night and, to Rosie's surprise, she rested well despite sleeping on the ground, most likely because of all the travelling they did earlier. She woke up early due to hunger, forgetting in their urgency to get to Moonlight they hadn't stopped for food. She supposed the time they saved catching up to her was lost gathering supplies. She did manage to forge for berries to eat to quell the sting of hunger, however. They were good enough for Pokemon, they were good enough for her! Her mother had taught her about all the common berries, and it seemed as if she got some Oran and Pecha berries.
When he finally wanted to rest for a rather seemingly long time, Rosie smiled.
"Aha, sure!" Rosie fumbled shyly, nodding while letting Damian rest a bit.
"O-oh! Was that the pokemon from your egg? How cute!" She complimented upon its release, she sat there while he trained his new baby Pokemon.
Rosie didn't want to split up... but... If it meant finding Moonlight quicker, that would be prudent.
"A-a-alright... Look for me at the Pokemon Center in Tarton! Here, this is my Pokegear number! Call me when you're on your way, if you can catch up!" Rosie thought, taking a piece of paper from a notebook in her purse and jotting it down quickly, ripping it from it from is home and handing it to him, adding, "Please call me as soon as you get to Tarton!"
They were so close to Tarton no way Rosie was going to stop now.
With a smile and a wave, she ran off to Tarton...
To her Mother's next message...
In truth, she sort of was glad Damian might not be with her for the next note, as she remembered her mothers words about not trusting the Professor or his associates... Which included him...
She ran from the thought as she ran towards Tarton, finally arriving at its front completely out of breath. So out of breath she almost vomited
She wobbled her way to the Pokemon center, panting.
"H-hello... M-my name is Rosie Chandra... I-I think my mother, Rosa Chandra, left a message here for me...?" She asked the nurse behind the counter with hopeful, pleading eyes.
The nurse lady smiled at her as she approached. "Oh of course Miss Chandra, she left very specific instructions." She gestured to a man in a striped blue and orange shirt who was standing nearby the pokemon center counter. "Are you Rosie?" he asked as she approached. "It seems like your mother left a mystery gift for you." He handed her a poke`ball as well as a note.
Hello again sweety, I hope you followed my instructions, and that you haven't trusted anyone but me. You can reach me at this poke`gear number, but if I ever hear a voice other than yours on the other end, I'll have to throw away this gear and get a new one for safety reasons, so please only call me in secret. You never know which of Redwood's thugs might be watching, so even among new friends you might have made in Tarton, I'll have to ask you to be discreet. I hope you are keeping well. It seems that I will be delayed longer than I thought previously in our last message, but if you are succeeding in avoiding any suspicion, you can find another message from me at least in Heatwave City. I hope to be there in person when you get here instead of leaving you another blasted note. Don't worry about the house, Just come try to meet me as soon as you can so I can help you become the trainer you've always wanted to be!
