Hey all, I have a quick question on the characters you make, regarding their power choice. My question is, if you could pick up to two abilities for your character to have, what would they be?

I also want to know why. If it's Earth Manipulation, are you fascinated by strong people? If it's Fire or lightning manipulation, are you a Type A personality? Maybe you're into astronomy if you'd like your character to have Star-power?? I don't know. This is something I'd really like to take a look into, so if you could pick a pair that you'd personally fantasize about using (not ones that would best suit your character), I would VERY much appreciate it.

As for the explanations, bring ANYTHING you want to say into it. Something that happened during your life, what you grew up with, how you perceive the power to feel, etc. Any questions or need clarification, let me know.

Edit:

If you are split between powers you'd have in real life and powers you'd give your character if they were in a paranormal setting, imagine the character/yourself in a Paranormal/Fantasy setting, WITH a real-life aspect to it.

Poll malfunctioned, but it is unfixable. Place votes under the first "Pure Wackiness," if that's the option you choose.

I'd pick telekinesis and some kind of animal communication. Just think of how useful those could be in every day situations. Hands full of squirming baby? Really need to pick up the living room? Do it with your mind! Carry in a few more bags at a time when you go grocery shopping. Don't have to get out of bed to shut off the light or close the door. I have six cats, so the animal communication would really come in handy too when I want to tell them to stop something or, you know, move out of in front of the car because I'm trying to get out of the driveway. -_- It's mundane reasons, I know, but they would just be so useful.

Excellent. What I'm going to do is read through each response and set up a poll as we go, representing the general direction of where it came from. Lol, don't worry about it stemming from something that might be mundane. Thank you! I'm marking yours done for usefulness

I'll admit that the powers I would choose to have in real life would be very different from the powers I would want my character to have. Why? Because in real life I'd want the most useful powers while I want my characters to have interesting powers. Interesting is not always the most useful.

Characters: Too many to list. But for the sake of the thread: animal communication. Learn a lot about the world that you wouldn't otherwise know, but opens a lot of character dilemmas. Does the character become a vegetarian? How do they feel about other carnivores (human and animal)? Can they convince an animal to perform a task? If so, how?

Real Life: Invulnerability/healing (obvious), Probability manipulation (win the lottery, find that beautiful girl that actually likes you, etc.)

Good point you bring up. I'll go with your Real-life power answers, as the perspective you choose take a look at this question from, is part of the exercise. I will add Knowledge & Understanding as a category though, from your character answers. Thank you!

For me personally, I'd want extremely fine telekinesis and heightened awareness.

Telekinesis allows you to maintain an illusion of effortlessness, is easily hidden, and supports a dignified mien. Heightened awareness allows you to better use the telekinesis at range or out of sight.

The 'fine' part refers to the fact that telekinesis you can use effectively at very small scales can do the work of bigger telekinesis, but better. For example, why hurl an attacker through the air when you can pinch their spinal cord to disable them, explain why fighting you is a terrible idea, and offer them a job.

What? Don't look at me like that. I'm absolutely not a supervillain.

Well, my answer to this question is very conditional, so I'm struggling with keeping it short. xD

I guess regarding myself, I'm going the "practicality" route.

Immunity to disease would be fantastic, for instance.

I wouldn't have to be quite as terrified of mosquitoes, and in general, being sick really sucks.

But like, I think I decided a while back that telekinesis would be the bomb dot com.

If someone's ever attacking me, I can just fling them out of the way without even having to touch them.

That... that would be nice.

i'm a coward

Also those moments where I have to cross the room to grab a laptop charger or something... well, fingers crossed that I would get my ass off the couch at some point.

Then for my characters, it depends on the character and the lore of the universe.

I have a character that is basically the manifestation of an imaginary friend, and he's able to change inanimate objects into flowers because of his desire to please the little girl.

Another to-be character of mine was going to have the ability to bring water to a rapid boil, which I think could lead to some interesting situations.

One time I gave a character of mine the power of acorn manipulation in a world of conflict and overpowered characters because I'm a sadistic bastard.

Another character of mine can transform, which I think goes hand-in-hand with my idea for the species (particular to the lore of that one role play) as well as the idea of that character being an effective assassin, but he also had some sort of fire manipulation... thing.

In any case, I usually like to try to venture outside the "norm."

I generally don't care how powerful my character is.

I aim for mediocre unless their power is significant to the character idea.

For something with preset abilities (fandoms, I suppose), I think I try to go more standard, because the flashier/fancier things tend to be the more powerful.

For something like a generic gifted role play where you can give a human whatever power you want though, I try to think outside the box and come up with things that might only be useful in some situations, rather than just going with elemental manipulation.

This is great. I'm getting closer and closer to the answers I want. To everybody, feel free to change your answers or repost with new thoughts if something said here changes your mind.

@Grey

Lol. I will reply fully soon.

@Pine

I will for you as well, but I think you may have broken a rule. Removing whether a skill would seem too powerful or not, what would you go for and why? This is for that bit you placed under the character side.

Also! From your two answers, I've added Pure Wackiness, Personal Superiority, and Visual Flair to the poll. Don't hesitate to change up and speak up if something better fits.

I will also be making an edit to the intro post outlining what powers would be chosen if the character were to be in a fantastical world WITH real life characteristics to it. That should hopefully eliminate the split answers and bring out what's truly important to a user.
I will for you as well, but I think you may have broken a rule. Removing whether a skill would seem too powerful or not, what would you go for and why? This is for that bit you placed under the character side.
Sorry, I may just be tired (I've been a bit confused from the start), but what do you mean exactly by this?

It really fluctuates with each character.

I wouldn't want to give two different characters the same ability.

So I suppose the condition there is just... what I think reflects them in some way, though not necessarily like "my character is so evil I'm giving them shadow manipulation."

Actually, I think it's more likely that I DO know what you're talking about, but I just... have no idea.

I guess when it gets right down to it, I want powers that no one else has for their characters, and more than likely, wouldn't even think of.

Whether it's wackiness, breaking from the mainstream 3 hipster 5 me, stretching creativity or what, I don't know, but if that' the answer I'm going with for WHY, then the answer of WHAT is constantly fluctuating.

At the moment, the flower power (*shot*) and boiling water things I mentioned before might very well be the two favorite powers I've ever come up with on my own.

At the same time, I haven't ever sat down and thought of all the different powers there are to think of, because frankly, they don't come that easily to me (espECIALLY since I generally only focus on mediocrity).

In the future though, I imagine I'll come up with something much more enjoyable than boiling water.

Congratulation, Pine, for adding more confusion to where confusion already existed.

(Oh, it's my pleasure! *flutters eyelashes*)

Interesting question! I'm not sure if I can answer it in a helpful way because part of me isn't sure whether I understand the question correctly or not, but maybe you can decipher my rambling.

I've always thought powers should have some sort of usefulness, like I'm not sure if you've seen the movie Sky High that often played on Disney Channel xD but in real life I'd kinda dislike having a "sidekick" power like melting or shapeshifting into only one thing. So Personal Usefulness is a big factor, but interestingly enough I like my character's power to have some limitation(s) and I normally see my characters as more of sidekicks than superheroes- I don't really crave the spotlight, nor do most of my characters so I don't normally pick "really powerful powers" I guess I'll call them. I guess I consider shapeshifting, invincibility, and telekinesis a few examples of "really powerful powers"- not to say that those powers don't have limits, but in my mind they might be too useful, if that makes sense. Of course in real life, I'd love to have any of those abilities- like who wouldn't!? So I guess you could say I like to have a balance of usefulness- something that would definitely help out a team, but not something that could qualify them as the team leader.

Uniqueness also has a part. Honestly, when I sign up for an RP I look at all of the Character Sheets already posted and create a personality and power that I think will create some balance. So say I join an Avatar roleplay and there are already 10 firebenders, 7 waterbenders, 2 earthbenders, and 5 airbenders- I'd make my character an earthbender. If it's something like an Xmen roleplay, then I'll take a power that hasn't been used by any of the other RPers and try to think of one that hasn't been used in the cannon universe. However, I don't want to create/use a power so obscure that I have to explain a lot for people to understand. I guess I like things that aren't common powers in well-known cannon universes like superhuman strength (Captain America, Hulk, Superman, Thor, etc.) but I could go with something like plant manipulation- not exactly uncommon but maybe not something that would make a Family Feud list of the 6 Most Popular Superpowers, ya know?

And then Personality plays a role. When I create characters, I normally start from scratch and tailor them to the RP I'm signing up for. I like to give my character a power that I think suits them, so if I have a shy character I probably won't give them something like lightning. For some reason, I equate a few powers like super strength, super speed, and fire with outspoken characters- maybe it's because I've seen movies where the main hero has that power or stuff like that. But now that I think about it, I believe I actually pick the power first and then shape the personality around that. Since having a super power is abnormal, I believe it has affected my character's life and personality greatly, especially if they were born with it.

<<At this point I noticed that Pine wrote an answer and I have somewhat similar viewpoints and could probably erase a lot of what I wrote (but I won't). Then I went and ate dinner. And now I'm back to finish this fricken long response O.o ">>

Though I guess in a universe where it's normal to have abilities, it could be different. But I still think it would affect anyone's life tremendously, whether it's a Realistic RP and people with powers are written off as freaks or its a Fantasy RP where people are divided into classes or occupations based on powers. So basically I guess I'm saying that for me, power and personality have a direct influence on one another, and so I pick both simultaneously, sort of...

<<At this point, I went back and read the edit to the original question and think I may have utterly failed to express myself in the way I should be, but I don't really want to erase all of this x.x>>

But perhaps I haven't completely failed... if I were the character in a fantasy setting, I would still want my power to be useful and somewhat reflective of my personality. Like there are definitely abilities I'd prefer to have over others, but if I was suddenly struck with fire powers when I want teleportation, I wouldn't complain.

OKAY I THINK I'M DONE NOW. I'M GONNA STOP TALKING NOW BEFORE I CONFUSE MYSELF AND EVERYONE ELSE EVEN MORE.

FINAL ANSWER- PERSONAL USEFULNESS AND PERSONALITY. THANKS AND SORRYYYY T^T

@Grey

I think you and Riley were the only ones that got straight to it =P. It was fascinating to see how extra things were added into responses. I plan to explore why that happens in another post. So, back to you, Grey. IRL, would you say you're mysterious, cultured, or aloof? How about exacting in your thought/actions and to the point? This is so exciting. I've seen you around the forums for some time and can TOTALLY say the power selections fit. If you could answer those questions, maybe even expand, I'd appreciate it.

@Pine

xD Pine, haha. Do straightforward questions throw you off?? =P. I understood what you were trying to say, no worries. I can completely see why you chose what you chose too. IRL, do you find yourself on the random side of things? (I think I know the answer, but go ahead and tell me anyway, Pine!)

@MidnightAnew

Lol. Aw. It was a blast reading your post from start to finish. Hello, Anew! I thought you too, fell into the "Pine Trap," but you redeemed yourself at the end. You say useful and reflective of your personality. Pick two for me! I want to hear! What would be those you prefer? Take all the time you need to think about it. Take it as an exercise in self-discovery. (I do remember Sky High =P)

My Choices

As for my choices, the first would be Lightning creation/control for my character because of Visual Flair. When I was younger, I used to love when it stormed especially hard. The moist, cool breeze that came in through the windows felt wonderful, but what really caught my eye, was the lightning. It was beautiful and mysterious. It streaked across the sky in a flash, giving off this intense light, then fading away again. Watching lightning during a storm till this day, puts my mind and soul at ease. Ever since those times, I have always found myself being attracted to characters that manipulate lightning because of my IRL attachment to it. If I didn't have to worry about anything in a role-play besides picking powers, I would go lightning for sure. My character would probably use it in elaborate displays and have it constantly circle their body for a striking visual effect.

The second would be Gravity control. I am fairly sure this has to do with my personality. I have a weird fascination with crushing things; physically and figuratively. If someone wants it done in 10 minutes, I will do it in 5. If I finish writing up a paper with time to spare, I will re-work it, even if it what I already had was enough. When I'm done drinking a bottle of water, it bothers me just leaving it like that. I literally have to crush it. I get a kick out of crushing juice & milk jugs. So as far as gravity control...I would be using the crush function, ALOT. Stepping up against a towering monster or needing to level a whole city. That would be a dream. Crushing them under tons of pressure would be pure ecstasy.

I'm not a psycho =/

So in short, my chosen powers would be flashy, heavy, and full of force. I have used a power of those qualities in a role-play before, and talking about this now, I finally understand why I enjoyed it so much O.o .

Since I delve into characterisation more than anything else, I tend to write powers that are based off the character's personality, experiences, and background. For instance, the gamer gets video manipulation, allowing him to draw data and energy from video sources and manipulate them in the real world. In other words, doing what every concerned mother is worried about their child will do: performing in real life what they perform in their vidya games.

In personal opinion (WHEE WOO, OPINION WARNING), I find that a power that goes off the tangent of a character's entire...well...character, I.e. not even being remotely connected to them at all, is not a very well thought out choice. Imagine if I had the same gamer character using ki manipulation powers when she never had any martial arts training in her entire life, nor were her parents even remotely related to that practice.

Personally, for myself, it'll probably be the power to be able to get a girlfriend hahahahaha im so alone send me pictures of cats please

Glad to know I narrowly escaped the so-called "Pine Trap" haha xP

(And yeah I actually love Sky High even though it's so cheesy...)

As for powers, I think I'd first pick teleportation. First of all, I love to travel and wish I could visit many places whenever I want to. So I guess that part represents my personality- I'm adventurous at heart with plenty of wanderlust. Secondly, it'd be incredibly convenient. I'm late to almost everything, so teleportation would allow me to be on time. Plus, I hate trying to find parking spots- if I never had to find one again, my life would be much lovelier.

I used to have this obsession with invisibility as a power, but once I went to high school I learned I'm practically invisible without powers anyways xD

Now that I'm "older and wiser" I don't think invisibility is as useful as I might have thought before, and teleportation could be used for similar disappearing acts. That being said, my second power would probably have something to do with water- like controlling water or breathing underwater. Either would be fine for me. Ever since I was a child, I've loved swimming and seeing water powers represented. Like you mentioned, I also enjoy storms, yet for me the rain is my favorite part (though I agree lightning is very beautiful). I think rain and water in general are very soothing to feel and to hear. I've always identified with water as the element that best represents my personality- both as a child and even now. I'm a rather quiet person with a relaxed and cool temperament, flexible/go-with-the-flow type, occasionally moody, free-spirited, and independent. On the other hand, I'm afraid of drowning, so I'd love to like...not drown, ever.

In short, I guess my powers are a bit subtle but certainly useful. They reflect my desire for freedom and exploration and could allow me to escape for awhile, but they could also be useful for helping others.

I... were they straightforward?

Am I overthinking these, or am I thinking just the right amount?? x__x;

I... guess they do, maybe... depending.

Like, I just know that there are so many possibilities and it would take me hours to sit there and think of them all.

Hm.

I don't think so?

I feel like that's so broad too, but that's probably just another direct question that I'm nitpicking at. xD

If you had asked me at like <thirteen years old, I would have been like "omg totally. puppies!! lol i'm sooooooooOOoo random."

(Yes, I'm afraid I was THAT person.)

I don't think I really am, though?

Whatever's on my mind tends to align with my interests and I have trouble concentrating on, say, conversations about celebrities (not that I WANT to partake in any conversation like that), so my mind tends to wonder during those times, which I guess can be... perceived as random?

Yeah, I think I can SEEM random, but there's always some logical train of thought that went through my mind to connect those different thoughts (I tend to zone out and daydream when I'm bored), and by the time that I find something to bring up to other people, the connection between the two ideas will have been nearly perceivable to whoever is in question.

So... no, but yes??

Also, I loved your description of stormy skies just now. c:

Storms are so great and I really share that sentiment.

Wow, powers, okay.

How about this. Whenever writer's block happens, you close the laptop and leave. Then return, and magically, somehow, what you were typing is finished (and beautifully edited).

Or the power to literally go into fictional worlds.

personally, i'd go with time manipulation and spatial manipulation.

time manipulation would be great because i could just pause and take a nap sometimes. also steal shit.

spatial manipulation would be fun because i could make like... fuckin hammerspace and i carry around a lot of notebooks too. also teleportation and shit.

they also fit together in like. a space and time kinda deal. and they fit me because i love shit like that and could justify wearing a space themed outfit 24/7

about characters

for characters it depends on personality and where im going with them... for instance, a dubstep loving hacker would be a better technomancer than the sweet one who only uses their phone to look at pictures of cats.

Oh, SimJ22. As much as I might regret this, I'd like to seriously know what you'd choose for yourself and why. Entertain us. Removing anything relating to characterization or the like. I want pure preference. Leave matching powers to backstories out. Those are not things I'm looking for with this question.

@MidnightAnew

Wonderful. Thank you. You also brought up another option I was surprised had been missing from what's been said so far, "Helping others." I didn't even realize this myself until you posted it.

@Pine

Yes =). Storms are excellent. And this is amazing :5/5:. Here's what I connected with what you said:

Yeah, I think I can SEEM random, but there's always some logical train of thought that went through my mind to connect those different thoughts
It goes to this:

I have a character that is basically the manifestation of an imaginary friend, and he's able to change inanimate objects into flowers because of his desire to please the little girl
I get it. That does reflect in the earlier character you mentioned. To the outsider it may look odd, but you did have a reason for creating it (to please the girl), rather than just being done for the sake being odd. Fits? I think it does.

@Cross_Rhodes

(>A>) Your answers are accepted. How come going into fictional worlds though. Love of reading?

@ganymede

Now, your choices were very interesting. I was waiting for time and space to come up. I'm guessing you are interested in space and Sci-fi then? Thank you for the answer! I added Hobbies & interests in the poll if that sounds like what it has to do with.

Findings So far (For GMs)

This is going to come from way out in left field, but this thread is actually a help thread for GMs creating Paranormal RPs. It is using real feedback to find the best batch of powers to include in a role-play. I may bring up a few more things depending on how many more answers are posted, but so far, here's what I have for a new GM creating a paranormal RP with powers.

 • Powers that assist others seem to be a low priority. Though they may be chosen, it could only be for character related purposes, and not really fun. Balance this out by giving the healing power character perks, such as more impact in the story or rewards for healing others (tier system=heal enough and you can...turn into an angel?). I myself have always hated the healing role and this kind of affirms it's not high on the list for others too.

 • Having Elemental abilities, is a good core to start off your powers list with. They are great options that cover Personality (one of the biggest influences). To cover another big influence, Personal Usefulness, it'd be a great idea to detail under each element, how it can be used by a role-player to make life easier. Changing water into ice-sliding for travel. Opening the earth to travel through it in tunnels, if a character wants to be sneaky. Using fire at different levels to adjust the temperature in a room. <--- Along with covering Personality & Personal Usefulness, it'd be an excellent chance to show role-players, they can do more than just sling these elements around. Hopefully it'd get them curious enough to explore what else it can do and be used for.

 • That Knowledge and Understanding should be reflected in the power choice list somehow. This is what's surprising. I had no idea, people would pick a power based off this. Animal communication...??? Would have never crossed my mind to list it as a power. This shows there's another dynamic GMs choosing powers need to pay attention to. Ones that allow a character to learn and discover new viewpoints.

In Short

For GMs looking for a suite of powers to list in an RP they are creating,

 1. Definitely list the elements with a spin that shows how they can be personally useful.
 2. Include powers that allow a character to learn information. Mind Reading, Clairvoyance, Clairaudience, Animal Communication.
 3. Find someway to make powers that assist others, worth it.

P.S.: Any comments, anything I got wrong, let me know. Once again, thank you everybody for your answers! What I'm finding so far may or may not help you, but it helps me. Very much appreciated.

All I have to say, is turn the system on its' head. Who's to say powers that benefit others can't benefit the user? Healing can be used inwardly, reinforce the person's body by rapid reproduction of cells thus making the body able to block a blade's strike, or by rapidly healing wounds, live through decapitation by reattaching the head as it gets cut through X3

Also, healing could serve as a form of body manipulation, by recreating cells and directing them through the body to do things such as rapidly generate extra limbs and such. Perhaps you wanna make a second head, so you can do that X3

Also, offensive powers can be made to be used purely for protecting others. Why do we have to burn the opponent, when you can reinforce yourself to act as a human shield by setting yourself ablaze? Burn your arm to dust just to create enough heat and pressure around your arm to temporarily make it as hard as stone and sacrifice it for others. Burn away poisons inside another's body, burn their wounds closed, etc. Really, if you get creative enough you can make powers designed to assist others work as an offensive capability or for solely your own benefit and vice versa.

=P Sorry, Missed your answer. No, everything you said was right. I completely agree. I didn't think of that human fire shield thing. Wicked ( :P ). Well there you go. A fresh look at powers and how to use them.

When I seek powers, I seek to make the power as versatile as possible for as many situations as possible. They tend to do 2 things:

 1. Differ in Elements
 2. Differ in utility

I mean, I don't usually make characters with the same power, unless I've done it and it didn't really go well

For example, If I want Lightning, I'd add the ability to infuse it with different elements, Like if infused with Ice, it'll add freeze. If infused with Earth, it'll get weak, but will drain the body of nutrients to physically weaken them. If Fire, it'll be as hot as the core of the sun. If Holy, it'll be able to heal or purge demons

I once used a character who used a bow and arrow. There were 30 different arrows to choose from. It was the same thing with swords, but there was 100 of them

I guess it's that I play a whole lot of Pokemon. In Pokemon, one hole in your team, one type not covered for, one Pokemon not ready to take down, and you will get destroyed immediately

When I seek powers, I seek to make the power as versatile as possible for as many situations as possible. They tend to do 2 things:
 1. Differ in Elements
 2. Differ in utility

So hobbies and interests for you then? Combining powers is a unique option for players. I haven't seen that in my time here. I have just one question for you. Have you seen that done before in all the RPs you've been in? Or are you pretty much the only one who comes with that?

It's that and Personal Usefulness

It's pretty much just me that comes up with that, that I've seen..............

..............so long as it's not an RP that I host. In those, I came up with an elemental system that features 14 elements. In all my Magic-using RPs, that's my system.

My whole thing of keeping weaknesses to a minimum is available to all players

Wow. That's nuts =P. I would think that it would make things get too crazy IC, but if it works for you, hey, go on! Thank you for the info

It's not exactly info I tell to everybody. I mean, I show them all the elements, and they choose what they want

For the most part, it goes just like any other RP. Very very few players actually pick up those hints. I've found that the ones that do pick up the hints are the most creative, and add the most to the story
