Adonis Frazier

Looking around at the other students in his group, Adonis couldn’t help but notice that he seemed to be the oldest among them -- the majority of the undergraduates appeared to be in their late teens. The violet-eyed male was cleanshaven, but after a few days of not shaving, pale stubble was starting to poke through. In comparison, the other boys had clearly undergone puberty, but it seemed like they were still a year or two away from becoming adults.

When Cadmus introduced Trix before stroking the shrimp’s azure carapace, Adonis gave a cheerful smile. He loved animals, and the small crustaceans were popular pets for a reason – they were cute. “She’s adorable,” he hummed. Hearing Elliot’s comment, the researcher didn’t choose to make a snark comment. Instead, he admitted that he understood her because he hadn’t read the rulebook either. Honestly, who had?

Before Adonis could ask to hold the creature, Professor Arden stepped in to introduce himself, welcoming his students with a warm smile. Deciding to show the lot of them around, the teacher shifted into a piraputanga, Cadmus trailing after him. Noting that the short nymph knew his way around – for when he wanted to explore – Arden followed their example. And then, the researcher noticed that what Keelester’s fish form was. ”You’re an archerfish?” he asked, the Oscar’s slender frame twirling around the striped fish.

Cadmus heard the white hair girl, who had earlier introduced herself as Elliot Reed pointing out about pet being allowed on the campus area. "Yes... Kind of, but it's mostly just something like dwarf shrimp or water flea since they don't make much mess or disturbance... You won't get away bringing a pet crayfish here though." Said the boy, chuckling at the thought of someone parading a huge and potentially dangerous crustacean through the campus street.

As the group took to the water in their fish form and moved onward, Elliot made another comment about the atmosphere and scenery within the campus, something that the other new students seemed to be wondered about as well. "Yes, our lake here is much shallower than Sapphire Lake. Sun light here allows the city and its surrounding community to be able to grow crops and raising bottom-feeding livestock, and generally make resource here bountiful. Still, many people here would give anything to witness the spectacle of Sapphire Lake that's its great shoal of fauna that ornament the deep blue water." Said Prof. Arden to Elliot. "Yes, I would love to go there one day. Heard nothing is more marvelous than sitting under the great shoal as it dances across the water above." Added Cadmus, with his eyes sparkling with passion.

With a bubble-filled sigh, Flame realized that there was no way they were going to be able to keep up on foot and shifted, trailing behind the group on high-alert. They felt... exposed. Yeah, that was a good word for it. Idly listening to the conversation around them and trying not to give into the temptation to flee the small group of semi-colorful fish, Arias' pectoral fins flicked, the red appendages scattering light in red beams down toward the ground.

"'S bright. A lot brighter than the forest, anyway," they commented, squinting in discomfort. "Even at night. And loud. It's loud, too." Which was fair, since generally, the forest was so quiet because loud noises drew predators.

That still didn't make it comfortable, though, and old habits died hard.

Elliot

"If you visit Sapphire Lake you might want to try it during winter. We have lot of festivals during winter." Elliot said to Cadmus. She then swam next to the professor to ask a question.

"Professor Arden, I didn't actually expect Grand Mbuna to use a group system like this, but can I know the reason why?" She was wondering about it ever since she saw the namelist. It reminds her of military training system, but she was confused of the team's composition. In a military squad you can expect each members to do the same thing, or at least trying to achieve the same goal. Looking at her groupmates though, Elliot wasn't sure any of them even taking the same study courses as her.

She had been expecting a bit longer of a meet and greet, but getting straight to the tour wasn’t an issue. Like the others she had turned into her scaly form, although Isabelle had hung back momentarily since tall, dark and broody decided to stare off into whatever. From her sixth or seventh row seat she caught his shift, and rather than marvel at the iridescent mass he became she busied herself with wondering if the fish matched the nymph. She would have to study on that, but for now catching up with the group was more important. Zipping along she bridged the short gap in seconds, a dangerous thing to do with a tiny tetra about but Isabelle was a professional. She only nearly swam into what would have been an unlucky little fish but that was all apart of the last second plan.

Not one to nearly bump and run without saying anything she rather enthusiastically spoke, “At home I always heard folks talking about Mbuna but it’s even more amazing than I expected.”

Behind him, he felt a strong current rushing up to him, and he almost lost his balance. He turned around frantically and saw (from his viewpoint, at least) a gigantic True Chameleon Loricaria rushing up to him, stopping just whiskers' length away from him. Then, as suddenly as she stopped, the Loricaria spoke to him, as if it was natural and normal for such thing to follow after nearly bumping into someone.

Trying to calm himself, he answered, "yeah, it is amazing! I didn't think I'd seen this much sunlight before, even on a sunny day..." Then, after his nerves had calmed somewhat, the entirety of what the Loricaria said sunk in. Excitement took hold of him again and he asked, "wait, you aren't from here either! I thought everybody was from here, they all seemed to know where to go. Where are you from? How's the weather? The view? What do people do there for their living?"

keelester followed along with everyone else taking his fish form and well swimming after everyone else with a fair deal of acrobatics on his part just having a good it was clear keelester was a little on the easily distracted end as it seemed he'd not really commented or fully acknowledged the teacher's presence or whatever else they might have actually said. That was very much true and his previous acquaintance Adonis commented on his fish form wondering if he was an archerfish this just prompted keelester to chuckle a little. "oh yeah... kinda funny hey archerfish and I'm a fan of archery got nothing to do with anything collocation wise but it is amusing hey?" keelester would reply taking a moment to think as he followed along "so adonis how you feeling bout this place i think its going great so far honestly"

Hearing the question from Elliot, Prof. Arden smilingly replied. "The grouping was merely used to assign students to each professors to supervise. Each advising professors will monitor the students assigned under their care in their education record, to help advising them to pick their suitable class or guiding them to prepare for any career they pursue. They may also help their students coping with various struggle in the college as well. Grouping is also for easier management of students' stay in the dormitory. Since many subjects or class may require students to wake up early or staying up through the night, It's crucial for students stay in our dormitory until graduation. However, grouping will not interfere with the choice in subjects and classes. Every students are free to take any class they wish for." Said the professor.

The tour over the college continued as Prof. Arden introduced the new students to various places throughout the campus, such as main study hall, dining hall, area for practicing combat and sport, library and museum, etc.

The group eventually arrived at an open space right in the center of the campus. There, a monolith carved with ancient runes could be seen floating mid water, undeterred by any torrent. The runes that were carved into the rock shone brightly, giving a warmth aura radiating throughout the entire place. Professor Arden landed on the ground there, transformed back to his nymph form. Cadmus followed suit and did the same.

"This is a rune ward, one of the eight that present in Grand Mbuna and of the entire Potamos." Said the professor. "Centuries ago, the greatest Arcmages of each magics had joined force and created these rune carved monoliths to stand guard the city when it was still young. The 8 wards were placed all over Grand Mbuna, radiating magic that protect the city from any powerful and dangerous beasts that inhabit Northern Lake, especially those with more complex mind. They conceal the city from their eyes from further range and discouraging and even twisting the mind of those that manage to get too close and even more so, giving burning sensation to those that manage to breach the border. Since the fall of the last alligator and the erection of these rune wards, Grand Mbuna haven't had any attack from wild beasts. Unfortunately, predatory insects and other invertebrates are not affected by the wards, however our soldiers that guard the border can easily engage and repel them, thus they are not much of a threat here." Prof. Arden paused for a bit and then continued on.

"...After that, any attempt to create more rune wards had become futile and thus other cities have not had any of their own... It seems that magics in the world had become weaker and weaker over time that newer generations can't generate one powerful enough to create such artifact." Said the professor as he looked up to the monolith. "What a shame indeed... It could have saved many life in other cities and remote places from creature attack all these time."

Cadmus looked at the monolith with a big of sadness in his eyes. His parents were taken by predator just right before they could make it to the border of the ward... And even if he wasn't there to witness it, the artifact before him made him think how thing would have been different if more wards were to be able to created and placed in the traveling path throughout Potamos.

The bright red arowana started, fins flaring indignantly as they listened to the little speech their... tour guide(?) was giving. Though they did feel the slightest but of awe being so close to such a giant creation of magic, it was dulled and struck down by the fury beginning to broil under their scales.

"So you're telling me," they spoke up from the back of the group, the voice from the fish all-but snarling, "that you have eight of these runes yes? Eight runes that have just been sitting here for years. Protecting one city of nymphs. Why in the star-specked skies would you keep all of them here, where there are few predators as it is instead of dispersing some for the other biomes?" Flame's fins fanned out from their half-open position, the membrane stretching uncomfortably but getting their message across as the sharp points from the bones grew apparent.

All wonder at the rune was now gone, vanished with their words as they shifted back, hand already picking through their scarf to find the blade. It was a small comfort, but it was there. Even just a few safe places in the other biomes would have been such a help. It'd have been so much better than sleeping with one eye open and ears perked. Not having to trap a campsite at least once.

"Okay, so maybe you'd have to reorganize the city some, but there's so much space here, and there's no fucking way that you couldn't tweak the grid to protect the nymphs while leaving lower-risk structures outside the field." They tossed their hands upward, unraveling some of their scarf, as the blade stayed firmly between their fingers, though still hidden by the cloth. "You could dig down and still be in the protection of the field, too, so theoretically, you could even fit everything here in the field just have it partially vertical."

They opened their mouth to speak more, but forced themself to bite down on their tongue and restrain themself, the smallest droplet of blood floating up into the water. Don't get worked up. Don't get worked up. It's fine. It's fine.

Flame took a long breath through their nose and let it out their mouth, watching the red slivers spiral through the gentle current. "Done now. Apologies for my outburst."

Undeterred -or rather, entirely ignorant of- the little tetra’s understandable fright, Isabelle seemed to double in spirit to match the tetra’s excitement. With an easy, natural grace she began making slow vertical circles around her new friend while she replied, “Yeppers! Well…actually no but yes, I grew up a little north of here. Lil’ farming village where my folks raised daphnia.” At that she paused, which for her was about half the length of a normal nymph’s pause, “I figure our weather’s ‘bout the same as here but the view’s a tad…flat? Not much to see y'know?”

She was just beginning to return the questioning when gloomy spoke up. Having been a tad too preoccupied with her new friend she had zero idea why he was being grumpy, but she wasn’t so dense to not realize how serious he sounded. Still, she would be happier knowing what was going on so she closed in on her tetra friend, which looked more like she was blanketing a maybe unwilling victim, and quietly as she could asked, “Hey…uh what’s going on?”

Arl followed her around as she made circles around her. He was just as excited as she was. "Really? We almost grew up in the same place then! I came a bit north of here too, in the farming village. Well, we didn't raise daphinas, we herded snails!" I've never seen a nymph as excited as she is, he thought, but before he could finish that thought she went on again. "Well," he replied when she mentioned the view, "I don't think I've seen the alligator bones all in my life..."

Then, as Isabelle suddenly closed up on him, he instinctively dove backward - a huge fish, even if it was a nymph, diving up on a tiny fish was enough to trigger deep-seated reflexive instinct. The trouble was, he had no idea what was going on either. "Um..." he said... "I have no idea...? They just seem like, in the argument or something... about... some kind of thing..."

Adonis Frazier

The coincidence only occupied Adonis’s mind briefly – which was rather lucky for Keel, as he was probably tired of people pointing it out by now – and the light-haired individual quickly shifted gears as he was questioned. The male tilted his head towards the side before answering with the equivalent of a shrug, “It seems pretty nice.” A pause and he continued, “It’s huge. I like that.” As someone from the city, Adonis had grown to appreciate having space, and the campus certainly had that.

Tiger-orange eyes focused on the silver-scaled fish. “Coming from a Sapphire Lake native, living in a cramped space; it’s far from an enjoyable experience. You ever have a neighbor who refuses to clean up after their shrimp?” Adonis shook his head and let out a very dramatic sigh which, being honest, was to be expected coming from him. The nymph was very good at complaining. “Speaking of that, your accent. Are you from the country?”

The mage who had been half listening and half ignoring the professor’s explanation’s attention was drawn to the drama happening beside them. Flame had shifted back to their form – honestly, Adonis couldn’t tell if they were a boy or girl or nonbinary – and was now cursing out their teacher for something that wasn’t exactly his fault. Now, the scarfed nymph was right, but was it hardly Prof. Arden’s fault, and to be quite honest, Adonis hated being accused of anything. Even so, the adult loved himself some drama as long as he wasn’t involved. But that wasn’t the point; this would have a huge impact if it was actually possible.

Dropping to the ground beside the others, Adonis carried on where Flame had left on. “Still, is it possible?” The light-haired nymph gave Cadmus a glance, wondering if the teen was about to leap to the teacher's defence. The two did look pretty close.

Elliot

"I see, so it's more for convenience. Interesting." Elliot nodded thoughtfully at the professor's explanation of the reason they're put in groups. She followed suit to change back into her humanoid form and kept listening to the professor's explanation about the ward. The one of the student suddenly let out an outburst of complaints.

Elliot thought the complain was unreasonable. If she had 8 swords then there's no obligation for her to give it to other people. It sucks but that's how politic goes. Also, moving magical structure might not be that easy since a lot of them needs to be placed in a specific order, back in her mansion she had a hedge maze that's also shaped as a magical symbol, if the shape was changed then it would lose its magical property.

Still, Elliot said nothing for the argument and just folded her arms in front of her chest. Grand Mbuna's properties were none of her concern so instead she would use this opportunity to observe the professor and how her groupmates would react.

Cadmus shifted his thought back to the present when he suddenly heard an outburst of word, coming from one of the student in his group. It's the red hair youth, whose name is Arias or something like that. The boy (***) sounded quite angry as he cursed and demanded explanation why Grand Mbuna hadn't yet distribute the wards to other places yet. Cadmus didn't expect anyone to bring up this question, let alone in such manner. The tension in the atmosphere rose and it made Cadmus felt small and wanted to hide behind someone, however the boy just stood there and looked back and forth between Arias and Prof. Arden, waiting to see how this was going to end up.

Prof. Arden seemed no less surprise as Cadmus did, but he was still as calm as ever. The professor looked at the youth who had just yelled at him. His blue eyes glared calmly, yet powerful and unchallenged by the youth's manner. He then spoke.

"The wards were made many centuries ago... They have been here before any person alive today and they were also created by magic much more powerful than any living mages could ever be compared to. Aside of some vague understanding and how to maintain their well being, we know little about them. They are certainly unmovable, no storms or torrent, even the one that could tear off stone hut's roof couldn't make a sway to them, so as any magic we know. Any attempt to try to modify them could risk damaging these ancient relics of the past... All we have tried were the attempt to recreate them from ground up, which as I said earlier, were all unsuccessful... So, unfortunately, these wards could not be move to other place no matter how good it would be so." Replied the professor.

Flame blinked, taking a long, deep breath as their eyes were closed. Of course. Of course the fucking mages hadn't done anything to preserve the knowledge of how to actually use the damn things. Of. Fucking. Course.

They breathed in for five seconds

Held for six.

And out for seven. "Thank you for the explanation." For the second time in one day, they bit down on their tongue to suppress more... well, everything. Primarily irritation, though. They buried that under a thick layer of apathy and neutrality. Apathy was safer than emotion, anyway. Emotion got you killed.

In for five.

Hold for six.

Out for seven.

Repeat process.

Flame returned their limbs to their sides and tucked the end of their scarf back under the folds, eyeing the pillar with some mix of curiosity and distain. Skies, how useful they could be. But no. All eight of them were stuck here. In this one region. In the middle of one of the calmest places Flame had ever swam through. Amazing.

They could all but hear Teal's voice in their head chastising them for leaping ahead. Again. But to be perfectly fair, they didn't exactly enjoy having to run for their life every other day as they traveled.

"Breathe you weak-gilled moron," they clicked to themself, the words similar to the ones they'd entered campus speaking.

In.

Hold.

Out.

Their fury could wait until they had something—preferably nonliving—to punch. As hard as possible.

Ah, a neighbor! And farmers to boot! Isabelle wasn’t really sure why but that actually surprised her. A pleasant surprise of course. It was a shame the mood was killed with the discussion, although as it carried on Isabelle was able to piece things together. Having lived in such a peaceful setting, she herself could never imagine what it would be like to live in a danger zone. Keeping that in mind she could at least try to understand Red’s agitation.

With things calmed down she tentatively returned her focus to her tetra neighbor, “Erm…where were we? Snail farming?”

"Yeah... snail farming, big ones too." Arl was slowly understanding what kind of discussion was going on. Something about being eaten. Wow, so it was really a dangerous world out there. And this magical rock thing protected people inside of this area? And it was all fueled by ancient magic? The world really was mysterious indeed.

Realizing he was in the middle of the conversation, he quickly added, "the snails are so big you can ride on one, though usually there's no need, because they're so slow. Sometimes they're used for plowing though. And the dungs are used for all kinds of stuff, like as fertilizers."

Elliot

Elliot nodded at the professor's explanation, that make sense. Her attention shifted to the student who asked the question, he seemed to still be seething with anger so she approached him to confirm it.

"Oy, you looks like you're going to explode anytime. If you need something say it, or are you just hungry?" Elliot waved a protein bar in front of her. It's hard to chew and packed with nutrients. Suitable for practical meal during training, or anger venting.

Prof. Arden seemed to control the situation very well. Being so calm and gentle was why Cadmus has always been fond of this professor since he was just a fry. He knows many professors that would probably not tolerate such attitude from new students. Arias was simply lucky he got a very patient one as his adviser... However, from how Arden glared at the new student, something told Cadmus that he had got his sight fixed on the short tempered student. What is going to happen next? Probably up to the red hair boy (***) to find out himself...

Suddenly, before the group could move on, a yellow perch appeared and swam right toward them. Prof. Arden looked up at the new comer. "Professor Arden, you have been summoned." Said the perch as it transformed back into one of the college's staff. "What's the matter?" Replied the professor. The staff came closer and whispered into the professor's ear. Arden's eyes widened to his surprise. "Thank you, Tobias. I will be there shortly." Replied Prof. Arden before he turned back toward the students.

"I'm sorry everyone but our tour is over. I will have to attend important matter soon." Said the professor before he turned toward Cadmus. "Cadmus, I need your help." Said Prof. Arden. "Yes, professor?" Asked the boy.

"Could you show your new friends here the way to the dormitory? Give this to the keeper and she should get you the room key." Said Arden as he handed Cadmus a scroll.

The professor then turned to the rest of the group. "Today you are all free to roam and wander around the campus. Tomorrow, you will get to submit to the classes and subjects you wish to learn. You can pick as many as you want as long as you are able to handle them... Pick wisely and be dedicated, but do not overload your schedule alright? You have another 3 more years to learn after all. One more thing, professor office is right across the dormitory. If you need anything or want any advise, you can find me there... I also teach in general magic class and herbarium class, so if you do take those class, you will see me around... Anyway, good luck students! May Leviathan watches over you."

Prof. Arden then transformed and swam away. Cadmus was left alone with his new friends and dorm mates for the first time. "So..." Said the boy as he turned to the rest of the group. "...Do you guys want to go to the dorm now or do you want to do something else first... Grab something for lunch perhaps?" Asked the boy.

Flame knew the professor was glaring at them. They had no problem with that, glaring right back (without any heat, really) with an otherwise neutral expression, oblivious to the fact that students usually treated professors with the utmost respect.

A voice broke them out of their musings (not a hard thing to do) and reflexively, Arias' arm twitched toward their scarf as they backed up, eyeing the person with saturated distrust. In fact, they all-but projected the emotion, not doing anything to hide it.

"I'm... fine," the nymph replied cautiously, bobbing back and forth slightly as they scrutinized the other. "I'd have to be in my other form to explode, so I pose no danger to you."

Flame's head abruptly snapped around and they grabbed the tip of their scarf as some other fish swam into view. They backed up a bit more. The other fish shifted and talked to the professor, and soon, they were left with only the students.

Flame huffed.

Amazing.

Elliot

"Other form, huh..." Elliot mulled Arias' words as she watched the professor swam away.

"Cadmus, could you please show us the arena then? The place where people spar with each other and blast dummies for practice." Elliot asked the boy. She was planning to take the military course so she was interested on Grand Mbuna's training ground.

"Oh! A lunch sounds cool!" Arl jumped up and down, practically bouncing like a ball. "Although, arena sounds cool too. Maybe after the arena we can go to the lunch, and then maybe to the library? Of course, only if anyone don't object to that. If so, that's cool too, I want to see other places as well! I'm sure others have other ideas on the places they want to see!"

Practically babbling, Arl gushed out a cascade of words, one word heaping on top of the other.

Magic was an illustrious subject, one that even the most respected professors didn’t understand as could be seen by Prof. Arden’s explanation. Obviously, Adonis – who was far less knowledgeable – had no clue about how the ancient wards worked, and though he’d never admit his inexperience, it was pretty clear if you’d been listening to what he was saying. With a nonchalant shrug, the light-haired male withdrew from the conversation; Adonis wasn’t about to let himself be embarrassed like whatever was happening with the granola bar.

Luckily, it seemed like luck was smiling on him as Prof. Arden’s attention was drawn to his colleague, saving Adonis from four years of being hated by his ‘homeroom’ teacher. As the professor turned to leave, giving them a few final suggestions, the mage gave a cheeky wave before he gave Cadmus his opinion on what they should do next.

“I need to drop off my luggage,” Adonis declared. Besides, it was much too early to have lunch. Normally, the researcher would be busy with some experiment or another until one, so he either ate lunch extremely earlier or extremely late. Continuing, he asked, “Does anyone have an idea about when the professor will be back? Because if he’s going to be in a meeting all day, then we might as well just finish the tour without him.”

keelester happily listened to Prof. Arden explanation of what was going on nodding almost constantly as he tried to show he was actually listening to everything. so they should pick up and pick the a few subjects that they actually liked that would be fairly easy.. or hard? god having to pick just a few wouldn't make it any easier what should he do what should he pick? He could work that out later as their where more question to be had. Elliot question caught keelesters attention the most the nymph moving somewhat more over to her. "Oh yeah that would be great probobly much better than the place I had back home less large creatures around honestly it's like they where trying to kill me"

Listening to his new friends, Cadmus thought for a bit and then proposed an idea. "The dorm isn't very far away from here. What about we get there first so... Adornis, right?... could drop his luggage. Then we can head to the Combat Training Hall. It's where students learn to fight or practicing martial art, physically or magically." Cadmus then turned toward another youth names Arlewen. "...Also, there is a food stand on the way between dorm and training hall, it sells the best clam meat sandwich around here, we can grab some of them for lunch if anyone's hungry." Said Cadmus smilingly, trying to contain his excitement of showing his new friends around.

It was nice to have someone actually counting on him and casually speaking with him. Cadmus barely had any close friends before, mostly due to the fact that he spent most of his childhood in the campus where children of the same age were rare, that he ended up bonding with the professors and staffs here more... And when he finally moved out, most youths already stuck to someone who's Cadmus never likes, Lancis Dunmar the son of the general of Grand Mbuna and a local bully... Lancis offered Cadmus to be a part of his 'group' once, but seeing how the boy treated others around him... He refused... And thus began Cadmus's biggest torment he'd had...
