Painful Memories

Vanessa tightened her grip on her brothers hand as they were guided up to the front doors of the ramshackled looking orphanage. The policemen knocked on the door as James McUlann looked down at his younger sister, giving her a reassuring smile. The old wooden door creaked open to reveal a tall old woman with a wrinkled, angry face. Her graying eyes glanced over the James and Vanessa for a moment befor focusing on the cop. "These are the two you phoned ahead about, I presume?" She asked in a low, almost spiteful tone.
"That's right ma'am. Their names are James and Vanessa McUlann. They just lost their parents." The policeman replied.
"I see. Very well then. Come inside children. Come, come!" The old woman said as she ushered the pair inside befor grabbing the edges of the door. "Thank you officer, and do have a nice day." And like that, the old wooden door slammed shut. Peering out the window, she watched as the officer walked back down the drive and got in his car. Tires crunched against gravel as the cruiser drove off into the distance. The old crone turned her gaze to the children now.
"My name is Felicity Grace, but you will call me Miss Grace. I am the headmistress of this orphanage. I expect no trouble out of either of you." She uttered as a horribly twisted smile came across her face. As she snapped her fingers two men appeared from a doorway to her left. "Gentlemen, please take this boy to his designated quarters. I'll take the girl to her room myself."
..............................................................
Vanessa's eyes shot open as she jolted awake, a warm stream of tears rolling down her right cheek as she began to silently shake. Pulling her arms around her knee tighter in an attempt to comfort herself, she tried to block out the horrid memories the dream had brought with it.
Vanessa recalled her first night at the orphanage more vividly than she cared to admit. The decent down the stair with that mean old crone of a woman, the stench of filth and foul disease, the crying and the screaming echoing through the basement halls. All of this played back in her mind as she sat in silence for a few moments.
She remembered being shoved into a small concrete room with a bed in the center of it. Aligning the wall were various shackles and chains, as cold to the touch as the hands of the man that came in to 'Visit' her that night. After a quiet moment to compose herself, Vanessa glanced around the room swiftly to check an make sure her episode went unnoticed by the others as she absentmindedly rubbed her wrists. She didn't want to seem even more vulnerable in front of them than she already did.
(Figuring out how to word this to give the implied meaning took me forever XD sorry it's not longer but I fear it a bad idea to elaborate further.)
