"What's wrong with Cali?" Jenna asked "You know what, nevermind." It wasn't the time or place to get into a pissing contest. "I doubt Walmart sells silencers though. What's next, you're going to tell me they sell grenades?" The girl lightly chuckled, leading the two men down a back alley as she did her best to avoid the main city streets. It would take longer, but at least they'd be alive.
She hadn't been in the city since the first day of the outbreak, which felt like so long ago. Cars littered the streets, but they were empty of bodies. Jenna knew full well where the dead had gone. One car in particular, a grey station wagon caught her attention. It wasn't the bloodstains smeared on a tyre, nor the empty bullet casings littering the ground next to it that caught the girl's eye though. It was the luggage tied to the top of the car, and boxes in the backseat. She stopped in her tracks, peering from inside of an alleyway as she watched two corpses pass by the vehicle. "What do you think, Ivan? Is it worth it?" Her voice was hushed, barely a whisper
"Some do, I think. It's insane how easy it is to get a gun in this country." Ivan said as he took on a sort of crouched posture, walking behind the other two and constantly looking over his shoulder before she asked him if "it was worth it." Curious about what she was talking about, he turned back around to see the two corpses, followed by the station wagon. A few quick thoughts passed through his head. "No. They were leaving the city. It's most likely nothing but clothes and house stuff." Ivan said as he moved up to the mouth of the alleyway and looking down both ends of the street. "The boxes might have something halfway decent, but it's still not worth the attention we'd get breaking into it."
Jenna slowly nodded in response "Fair enough." She whispered, poking back into the alleyway and leading both men down the street. At best, they'd get some food and maybe clothes fit for winter but there were probably safer ways around that. At least, she hoped so.
The only thing close to a silver lining the girl could think of for the hazmats and their various war crimes was that there would still be places untouched, places fit to scavenge for supplies. Just thinking about it made her feel physically sick, but it could be the difference between the group she was in making it another day and all turning on each other. Hell, sometimes it felt like they were already at that point. All it would take was one more push and she was certain the group, or at least a few of it's members would tear each other apart.
Jenna just hoped it wasn't her on the receiving end of that. She kept low and quiet as she led the two men through more backalleys, occasionally poking her head out to check for the dead while Cammy held back. There were a few scattered around on the main roads, and she spotted one in particular that appeared to be hunched over something, sinking it's teeth in. She squinted, then reeled back at the sight as the infected was tearing into a cat, the bells on it's collar jingling as the dead had it's hands around the thing's throat. Jenna clutched her axe tightly, breathing deeply in through her nose as she grinded her teeth together.
¨Whel ya know. It´s Cali so fuk em¨ Cletus responded to Jenna when she asked what was wrong with the state... darn California. It kind of annoyed the redneck when his opinion didn´t seem needed while both of his companions decided what to do with the luggage on top of the car; it was literally at the grasp of their hands but they decided not to go check it out. The group continued walking down the streets of the city until they spotted one of those undead creatures tearing apart a defenceless cat. The site of it repulsed Cletus, but knowing that shotting it would just attract even more of those creatures he asked ¨So... We gonna kill it aw something?¨
"As much as I wish we could, we can't. Nothing we do will save it, and nothing we do will bring it back. In a good ways anyways." Ivan said in a bit of a solemn tone as he put a hand on Jenna's shoulder. He gave it a short pat and a sympathetic smile if she turned to look at him. "It'll be gone soon. We should just leave it be. If it stops now that just gives the cat more time to suffer." The man said as if speaking from experience, his eyes sinking into lost times before he shook his head and snapped himself back. "Anyways. We should keep moving." He said in a whisper before looking towards Jenna for where to go next.
Cletus was surprised at the coldness that Ivan showed to the whole situation; there were many things that the redneck was willing to ignore or forgive under these circumstances, but letting one of those things enjoy a kitty meal was not one of them ¨Hold it right their ruskie, now, i know that we can´t exactly save that poor kitten, but as far as I know, bein' eaten alive is neither a very peaceful or painless way to go ya know?" The redneck knew that he couldn´t use Caroline under the threat of getting the attention of a horde, and seeing that the Russian was willing to let the undead fucker just eat the cat he would probably be unwilling to lend his silenced gun. That was until he noticed that Jenna had brought an axe with her ¨Come on Brit, I know we have had our... disagreements before, but you´ve to be with me on this one, with that axe you´re holding, we can kill that fucker and put the kitten out of his misery quicker than it would take him to die by bein' eaten alive¨.
Jenna growled "Ah, fuck it." The girl peered out of the alleyway, checking if the coast was clear. When satisfied, she kept low and made her way over to the corpse. All the while she held her breath, not wanting to make any sudden noises to draw attention. Breathing in, she slowly stood up and brought the axe down into the back of the corpse's head. After two blow blows, it dropped and the girl found herself presented with the cat.
It's black fur was caked with blood, one of it's legs was gone completely and part of it's throat had been torn out. "It will be okay..." Jenna glanced over at the collar, seeing a nametag "It will be okay, Salem." She whispered to the creature, bringing the axe down one final time and striking its skull. It twitched a few times before it stopped moving altogether. She glanced back at the two men and started to make her way back to the alley, keeping low and quiet as she moved.
