I feel it everyday, it's all the same
It brings me down but I'm the one to blame
I've tried everything to get away
Again, a figure flung themselves off the giant cliff. A dark haired man hit the rocks below. There was a sickening thud and the sound of multiple bones breaking.
Fifteen minutes later, the tall male stood up, and began the steep climb back up.
It was how every morning began for Mannik now. Just in case the Fates had forgiven him and decided to end this horrible punishment. Plus, for fifteen minutes while his body couldn't move, and Mannik couldn't feel his body, he could remember better.
So here I go again
Chasing you down again
Why do I do this?
Thousands of years ago, before Mannik had given himself a name, before the spoken tongue or written word, was when his Punishment had began. It had begun with her. Everyone in his tiny nomadic group had been dark haired, and when they had come across another wandering group, almost all of them had been the same. One woman stood apart from the rest. A tiny thing, beautiful golden hair flowing from her head. Oh, yes, they had all been dirty, and their hair had been tangled, but none of it had marred her beauty. Of course, because of that she had been desired by all the men.
So, as was fairly common during that period of human history, Mannik had taken her away. Though he hadn't had a word for it at the time, he knew she belonged with him. And the way she had looked at him confirmed she felt the same for him.
Over and Over,
Over and Over,
I fall for you.
Of course, now he knew the word: Soulmate. The woman was his soulmate. And he'd been searching for her again, for that feeling again, for oh so long.
She'd died hundred of years ago. And now, Mannik didn't even have a name to put to her face.
Over and Over,
Over and Over,
I try not to
She was dead, and he was here. If things had gone the way they were supposed to, she would have died, but so would Mannik. He wanted to forget the woman. He couldn't. He would give anything to forget her. But he never wanted to. Quite a difficult war to have with yourself.
He had been hunting. It was stupid to try and spear a baby Mammoth, but he'd had a hungry woman he needed to care for. He'd thrown the spear, and it had met it's mark. The baby hadn't died, it had simply given a heart wrenching trumpet, then followed the others as they started a stampede. He'd ran along, then his heart had stopped as the group turned to their left. The woman had followed him without him knowing, and now she was directly in front of the massive beasts! Mannik had ran as fast as he could, and had shoved her as hard as possible. He could still feel the huge feet crushing his bones sometimes.
He hadn't survived. He didn't remember much, just waking up in a dimly lit chamber. He hadn't had a name for all the things he'd seen then. Now it was clear, beds, blankets, curtains. And three beautiful women. Two wore blindfolds, but one stared angrily at Mannik.
It feels like everyday stays the same,
It's dragging me down and I can't pull away.
She didn't move her lips, and three voices had filled Mannik's head. It was still a mystery...he hadn't known any languages, but he'd understood those females. ~You took what was ours.~ Mannik hadn't understood, until they filled his head with a vision of the female. ~We are the Fates. We control your race. We decide who lives, who died. You are the pieces in a game we enjoy playing, and you lost us a bet. This is not permitted. You will be punished. You will return, and when people speak...you will tell them of us. You will tell them Fate may not be changed, may not be trifled with.~
Mannik hadn't known the other horrors still to come. ~You are cursed, as a warning to all others who think we will overlook attempts to thwart us. You think you saved your Soulmate? She will die now.~ Only one voice had said that to him, but another took it's place.
So here I go again, chasing you down again.
Why do I do this?
~You are cursed, but her life is what was owed. You will return to your planet, and you may never leave it. You will never experience the pain of the Damned Fire, but you will never experience the comfort of Loving Bliss.~ Mannik had started to understand the females. They were telling him the female would die anyway, and he never could. His chest clenched, and it felt like Mannik was drowning. The next voice that filled his ears held something new: compassion.
Over and Over,
Over and Over,
I fall for you.
Over and Over,
Over and Over,
I try not to.
~You are cursed...but you may seek solace, for a short while. The woman will be passed on. Allowed to live again and again, with no memory of you. Seek her out, enjoy a lifetime with her.~ The voice paused. ~But do not forget, you are cursed. She will die, over and over in front of you. You will try to save her, and fail. You will try again, and fail again.~
All three filled his head again. ~You humans live day to day in search of sustenance...we will mark her, as she will be your sustenance. Search for her.~
Despite being blindfolded, the tallest female leaned over, a tiny stick in her hand. She drew a picture on the stone floor.
~She will wear this mark, a sign of past learnings. A sign of the food you desperately sought in your previous life. Now. Return.~
Over and Over,
Over and Over,
You make me fall for you.
Mannik didn't remember how he had returned, either. But sure enough, when he was back in his own body, there wasn't a mark on him. There hadn't been a mark on the female either, other than the tiny shape of duck with it's head bent backwards on her left hand. But, as the Fates had promised, she was dead.
Over and Over,
Over and Over,
You don't even try.
Mannik had reached the top of the hill again. He let out a small cry of anger and pain at the waves below. The Sea didn't change. Mannik's deep green eyes closed for a few minutes, then he turned his back to the ocean, his robes whipping around him. He'd been here a week now, trying to gather his thoughts, trying to decide where to search next.
So many thoughts that I can't get out of my head.
I try to live without you, everytime I do, I feel dead.
I know what's best for me, but I want you instead.
I'll keep on wasting all my time.
Eventually, he simply returned to Sais. He'd searched most of the modern world, but there were still so many uncivilized lands with nomadic people. Mannik was starting to give up hope of ever finding the female. So many years had passed without seeing her. He found himself in the busiest part of the old city.
Even in 2700 Bc (Though Mannik did not recognize it as such yet.), the market of Old Eqypt was brimming with life. Fish were sold by the basketful, and people called out to Mannik, asking him to purchase something. As usual, however, Mannik declined politely. His eyes scanned the crowd as usual, for even the slightest thing out of place, the slightest thing to arouse his suspicion.
Over and Over,
Over and Over,
I fall for you.
Over and Over,
Over and over,
I try to not to.
Over and Over,
Over and Over,
You make me fall for you.
Over and Over,
Over and Over,
You don't even try to.
(Lurker's notes:
The song is Over and Over by Three Days Grace. It's not mine at all. The song gave me the idea for the roleplay, and I wanted to incorporate it somehow, so this is my mini attempt at a song fic.
The bird above is called a sankofa. It is also seen like this:
And much more commonly like this:
It is used in the Akan Language of Ghana, meaning 'Go Back and Get It'. It is also translated to mean 'It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten'.It symbolizes taking what was good of the past and bringing it to the present. On a personal note, this symbol is very important to me, so I'm glad we decided to use it here.
