Realistic or Modern [OSV] "Our Small Victory"

"Live up to your alias, goddammit!"

  • "Our Small Victory"

Location: Outside some bank, Time: 19:50 (Sunset)

Okay, this should be easy enough.

It took Eryn approximately 5 minutes to get down to the battle discretely, and was ready to start wrecking some villains' shit now that he was standing invisible in the middle of their group. He began by simply swinging his chained 8-ball at the back of one of the criminals' heads, cracking the motorcycle helmet they were wearing and knocking them down. He repeated this against another criminal, which was when they all started to notice that the police weren't the only ones fighting them.

Most of them just started to panick, but a couple of them started firing their beam weapons (which were thankfully a bit easier to predict than bullets) at the gaps between their members, which Eryn of course had to duck under before making one of them float up by the ankle, and swung them at the other attacker.

"Fuck my life!" Eryn immediately felt the effects of swinging a full grown man in the form of pulling one of the muscles in his left shoulder. The rest of the criminals all looked in his general direction.

"Oh...did I say that out loud?"

They raised their weapons, but Eryn repeated his previous technique of beating a motherfucker with another motherfucker before letting them get their shots off. He felt a few muscles in his left arm get sprained, causing him to kneel down and groan in moderate discomfort. He promptly got back up when he noticed that one of the criminals was getting back up without much trouble, despite the fact that the rest of them were still writhing on the ground in pain. Although it seemed reasonably considering that this guy was easily the biggest and bulkiest of the group.

He's dropped his weapon, so I should be fine if I turn visible for this last attack, right? This is getting tiring...

Eryn decided to make this attack particularly flashy since it was the last target and people were going to see him anyway. He ran slightly at the approaching thug and telekinetically enhancing the power and speed of his attack, a sideways kick towards the man's head. With this much momentum, it should have been impossible to block safely even if you were pretty jacked. And yet...

Eryn completely stopped in the air, with the man having blocked it only by touching Eryn's foot with two of his fingers. Orange energy was drained from Eryn and into the man, like he was having the momentum of the attack stolen from him.

    Oh boy

The man's arms glowed orange with the stolen momentum, and pulled Eryn into position to execute a suplex with as much power as his original kick attack and then some, probably even being a few times stronger than a regular suplex. Eryn was completely winded as he crashed into the hard ground, barely having processed the move which had been carried out in less than a second. He was left laying on the ground, coughing and struggling to regain his breath, or even to simply move. His back was definitely going to be bruised for a while.

The man removed his helmet to reveal a ski mask that was painted red and yellow, the trademark of the villain known as Suplex Stan. An embarrasingly cheesy villain concept for Eryn to be facing for his first true villain battle. Eryn even had a page about him in his
notepad. Stan began strolling away from Eryn to re-engage the police who were now relucant to shoot at the villain who had proven to be bulletproof in the past. He looked back (presumably because he heard Eryn's painful groans) to see Eryn trying to at least get back into a kneeling position, but even that was proving difficult.

"Oi, kid. There's no shame in staying down after a hit like that. You get up, and you probably won't like what comes next."

Stan kept walking away, while a few other thugs started to slowly get back up.

The supervillain is getting away, and the other criminals will soon recover. You may not be able to physically get up right now, but you could potentially still attack with telekinesis. How do you proceed?

Chuck the other criminals at Stan
Stay down until you recover. You can pursue him afterwards

    Cuss him out
Pull one of their energy weapons to you and use it against him

And so, Eryn telekinetically pulled the nearest energy weapon towards him. It was bulky and had various switches, one of which was accidentally adjusted when Eryn caught it. The settings on the switch weren't actually labelled, so he didn't know what to switch it back to, so he decided to just leave that alone. He raised it at Suplex Stan's back and pulled the trigger, firing out a quick thin beam that stopped just before impact, and quickly detonated as a big, bright explosion. This was probably the same setting that caused the explosion that alerted him to the battle in the first place.

Once Eryn's eyes had recovered from this visual assault, he could see that Stan had been sent flying over the police position and landed hard further down the street. He was clearly in similar pain to Eryn, and was not able to absorb any energy from the explosion's shockwave, but instead seemed to have absorbed the kinetic energy he would have gotten from hitting the ground considering that he didn't bounce at all and still displayed the same orange glow attributed to his powers.

Oh well, good enough for now. Eryn turned the switch to another random setting, just as a beam attack narrowly missed him and left a small, smoking mark in the ground next to his head as he made a small yelp. He frantically turned over to see one of the thugs having retrived their weapon and aiming at him. Other criminals began to aim and fire, but they were blocked by light blue, translucent and glass-like walls that appeared between them. He recognised these as the trademark of
Aegis, or Sydney Rose as he better knew her as, a hero primarily known for long-range shielding. She was probably watching and acting from atop another rooftop, out of sight.

The walls shattered as they were hit, but were enough to keep Eryn alive long enough to pull the rest of their weapons towards him. Police re-engaged the thugs, who quickly surrendered once stripped of their biggest advantages. He turned back to Stan, who had actually gotten up and started charging at him.

    Ah. Poopsicles.

Several of Sydney's shield walls appeared in front of Stan to try and block him, but he punched through every one of them without slowing down. Eryn had quite a few energy weapons available now, however, and they were all presumably set to use beam attacks.

    Stan's not happy. Now what?

Fire every gun at him simultaneously
Turn invisible, roll to the side a bit, and let him charge past you into the wall of the bank

Trip him over telekinetically while he's running at high speed
Lift him up and keep him suspended there until you can think of something else

  • "Our Small Victory"

Location: Outside some bank, Time: 19:55 (Sunset)

Eryn forced himself up into a kneeling position with much difficulty, for the sake of aesthetics, and floated the weapons in front of him, slowly spinning around each other. That last part wasn't necessary, but Eryn felt compelled to up the coolness factor to make up for his prior embarrasment of being suplexed. Some of the guns were indeed on their continuous beam setting, while others were actually set to a rapid-fire setting that essentially did the same job but by looking cooler. He telekinetically pulled the triggers of every gun at the same time, and they all poured their energy beams into the charging Stan. The gun that Eryn had manually changed the setting of, though, had actually been set to a more specific flame-beam as he still didn't know what every setting was.

The energy beams caused immediate and clearly visible 3rd degree burns on Stan's body wherever they hit him, while the rapid-fire shots instantly boiled the blood beneath his skin and created rather violent-looking bursting wounds, spraying blood, although they were immediately cauterised. Didn't stop more shots from creating more wounds, though. The flame-beam just straight-up set parts of him on fire. And yet, Stan kept charging. Eryn let out a small, nervous chuckle.

He's....he's gonna collapse, right? Or at least....stop?

The madman kept charging at full speed against the still-firing guns.

    ...Holy shit.

The dude was on fire, spraying blood everywhere, skin literally turned to leather, and didn't so much as make a painful grunt. He showed no signs of slowing down, and was even winding up a punch that was likely powered by the momentum he gained from the earlier fall.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT WHAT DO I DO?!

Eryn couldn't think of anything while Stan was charging, but once he actually began to throw the punch, Eryn panicked and dropped the guns while sending a powerful telekinetic push to his gut, launching him backwards. This also instantly dislocated his own right shoulder.

"MOTHERFUCKER! You've got a lot of nerve still coming at me after all that bullshit! Ugly ass gym-chad freaking SUPLEXES me, then has the gall to shake off an explosion at point blank range, AND tanks the fucking laser-beam-array bullshit I just came up with?! You're literally painting the ground red just by freaking LAYING THERE and you don't even acknowledge it! NOT TO MENTION YOU'RE ON FUCKING FIRE! What's your problem? Why'd you even do all this in the first place when you know for a goddamned fact you'll dissapear?! Robbing banks isn't even profitable! There was no reason for this encounter!"

And, much to Eryn's dismay, Stan sat back up, still on fire and still very much spraying blood everywhere. Within half a second, he was already charging at Eryn again, who hastily recovered a gun and set it back to the explosive beam, firing it at Stan again. The resulting blast ended up throwing Eryn backwards, but was still far enough to not wound him seriously. He looked back over to Stan once his head cleared, and saw him being thoroughly chained up and loaded into the back of one of the police trucks.

    Freaking finally, the dude's down...

Eryn layed back and closed his eyes, relieved, but only for a moment. He quickly re-opened his eyes and jerked his head back up.

    WAIT, HE'S STILL ALIVE?!

Eryn collapsed fully and turned onto his side, entering the fetal position and sarcastically laughing quietly to himself. He soon noticed that Sydney had arrived and was crouching next to him.

    " 'Sup?"
"Fuck this. Seriously, fuck everything about this day. I don't even feel like moving anymore. Or breathing."
"Good to know. Oh, have you done Monday's homework yet?"
"Ages ago, and I don't want to think about school at all right now."
"Uhuh. Your shoulder looks out of place, need some help with that?"
"NO! Nonononon-" too late, Sydney was already positioning his arm, and shoved it back into place. It somehow hurt worse than when he dislocated it in the first place, although considering the pain he was already in, he didn't feel the need to yell about it.
"I suppose you're right...we've got a bigger issue. Mainly, the fact that every news outlet is focused on us now."
Eryn processed the statement for a moment, and then turned further to the side and made a long, muffled scream into his mask.
"I'll just chill next to you until you recover enough to walk, I guess.."

Location: City streets, Time: 20:20 (Nightfall)

Sydney had lent Eryn her rapier to use as a walking stick, which he reluctantly accepted. The former was pacing around in a seemingly collected manner, but it was quite clear that she was just as panicked as he was. His original plan was to go in invisible and clean out the thugs with no hold-ups, aiming to AVOID this exact situation. How in the hell did it end up like this?!

"Three people have been put in the spotlight tonight. You, me and Suplex Stan. That creates a one in three chance that we'll be targeted and dissapear. Sticking together, while theoretically giving us a better chance at fending off whatever entity is causing this mess, creates a 2/3 chance of having to encounter to the thing in the first place! Neither of those odds are appealing!"
"Well, it was a nice life, although a short one.."
    "So, what's your plan?"
    "Plan?!"

    Plan?!

Confront low-level criminals and turn it into a high profile battle, drawing attention away from Sydney
    Offer to walk her home

Suggest a slumber party at your house. It's the weekend, and would help take your mind off edge. Plus, the guns from your dad's gun store may be helpful if the entity confronts you. You could even invite a few mutual friends so that it's not weird.
Go home alone. While a 1/3 chance isn't comforting, it's still the lowest possible chance available, and it would probably be in the best interests for both of you if you kept your respective chances of confrontation low.

  • "Our Small Victory"

Location: Eryn's living room, Time: 00:01 (Midnight)

The living room was dark, except for some light spilling in from the open door that lead to the kitchen and the light from the television. There were sleeping bags layed out in front of the TV, but a little further behind them was a table covered in snacks, and a couch that had a blanket over it to create some kind of makeshift fort, which is where the trio were sitting. The only friend that was available to come over to the sleepover was fellow classmate Robin Mistlight. He had yellow eyes, and short, black hair that had recently gained yellow streaks as a result of him discovering his power just a few weeks prior, which was very light electricity manipulation (nowhere near effective enough for him to consider becoming a hero, and thus Eryn hadn't created a notebook page for him yet). They were taking turns playing Resident Evil on Eryn's dad's old original Playstation, with the current player having to sit outside the cough fort until they died and swapped with another player. The current player was Sydney, who without her mask had long-ish, light brown hair and gray eyes. She was playing with the controller in one hand and a pizza slice in the other.

"I get why this game used to be considered one of the scariest things around, but the horrible voice acting and outdated graphics make it really hard to take seriously someti-- HOLY SHIT IT'S THE GIANT SNAKE"
    "HA. Get snaked."
    "What an original one-liner."
"Joke's on you, it's your turn now."

The group heard a loud noise, prompting everybody to quickly raise and aim their weapons at different parts of the room, completely tensed up. Robin had a sawn-off shotgun, while Sydney was given a high calibre bolt action rifle, while Eryn still had an energy weapon from before but kept a shotgun with him too. Eryn's father had lent them the guns, and while neither of them were really experienced enough to properly fight with the weapons, they were still responsible enough to treat the guns safely.

After a moment of processing, it was clear that the noise came from a branch outside hitting the window due to the wind.

"Aight, lemme go take a bathroom break first."
    "Don't dissapear."
"Fam, I'm not the one who has to worry about that."

Robin took the shotgun with him to the bathroom. Eryn grabbed another pizza slice and layed back on an ice pack.

"Hey, Eryn, you're on World Star."
    "The fuck?"

Sydney showed her phone to Eryn, which had a clip of him being suplexed. He winced at the sight of it, with the feeling of the impact being fresh in his memory. Eryn started browsing on his own phone, and found that all the news outlets had suddenly changed their articles about the battle. While they previously described the battle has being won by Ecto and Aegis, they now gave the credit to an anonymous user known as "Art_Master087", who claimed he was responsible for the victory. They didn't never explained HOW they were responsible, but the media never seemed to question him. It certainly wasn't the first time this guy took credit from other heroes.

Eryn was about to start an angry rant, but felt an irregular movement throughout the walls, ceiling, and floor via
TK Sonar. It didn't feel like water pipes, which he would normally block out due to it being so common. He could feel some kind of mass moving across all surfaces, surrounding the couch.

Something's here and probably isn't friendly

    Fire into the wall
Alert Sydney first to raise a shield

Make fun of the entity's apparant lack of stealth, calling it out
Wait for the entity to make the first move, and counter appropriately

  • "Our Small Victory"

Location: Eryn's living room, Time: 00:09 (Midnight)

"You never did level up in sneak did you, ya camping bastard?" Eryn stood up on the couch and looked behind him at one of the walls.
"Now all of China knows you're here, you absolute failure of an assassin!" "The fuck?"
Eryn heard a muffled voice coming from within a wall, distorted as if it was coming out of a speaker, "Predator-01, you've been spotted. Clean this mess up."
    "Wha-?"

He felt a rapid build-up of kinetic energy behind him, and dived down just fast enough to avoid having his head impaled from behind by a long, red spike shooting out from the opposite wall. It nicked his face barely, drawing blood. The spike retracted just as quickly as it had come out, leaving no trace of it ever happening. as it had done no damage to the wall. Sydney brought up a bubble shield around the couch just as more spikes started to shoot at them from all over the room, attacking the shield over and over again. Every attack created another crack in the shield, and Sydney had to constantly rebuild it just to keep them alive. The entity's attacks only seemed to be getting faster and faster.

    "What the actual fuck?!"
"YEAH NO KIDDING. DO SOMETHING. NOW."

He heard a flushing noise come from the bathroom.

    "Remember, no witnesses."
And now he could feel part of the mass in the walls start to spread towards the bathroom, with the attack still being maintained.

    Well, shit. Now what?

Drag the entity out of the walls and into the open.
Call out to Robin to warn him

Leave the bubble shield and provoke the entity, then turn invisible
Hold the mass and spikes in place to trap it.

  • "Our Small Victory"

Location: Eryn's living room, Time: 00:12 (Midnight)

Eryn took a moment to prepare himself, using TK sonar to feel the position of as much as the entity's mass as possible, before grabbing and holding it as securely as he could. The spikes froze where they were, allowing Sydney to drop her shield and collapse, taking a breather. This move wasn't kind to Eryn's left arm, though, which had already taken some abuse earlier against Stan. It wasn't just his left arm either. The entity was massive, as it had to be in order to fill up this much space while also extending spikes out of itself, and was actively struggling against Eryn's efforts to keep it still. The spikes slowly inched towards them, and Eryn felt a growing pain speading throughout his body.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Sydney getting back up and drawing her rapier. A fair choice given that there's not a clear target with the rifle, but Eryn still thought that the rapier may not be the best sword for this situatio-
    565075
The blade separated and expanded, seemingly held together by the bright blue arcs zapping between and through the segments.

"WHAT THE SHIT? I WANT ONE OF THOSE!"
Sydney slashed at one of the spikes, and while it wasn't able to cut through completely, it did seem to twich from the electricity. Eryn felt all resistance from the entity stop for a short moment, but it started up again soon enough, and retracted it's spikes. Since they were going in the same direction as Eryn's force, he wasn't able to stop them, and was further caught off guard when they all jutted out again only to be stopped by a new bubble shield from Sydney. Robin re-entered the room as the "Predator-01" restarted its attack.

    "....Huh."

It didn't seem to like being tased.

Use the energy gun. There's still a setting you haven't tried yet, and it might be helpful.
Tell Robin to enter the shield with them, while temporarily stopping its attacks again.

Make fun of it for hiding in the walls, coaxing out into the open.
Repeat the previous move, and tell the other two to assault it with electrical attacks.

  • "Our Small Victory"

Location: Eryn's living room, Time: 00:15 (Midnight)

Eryn froze the entity just like he did before, but felt his stamina draining much quicker this time. It didn't matter much, however, since Sydney immediately caught on and slashed at a spike with her taser sword again, stunning it.
    "Robin, zap it!"
    "You sure I shouldn't use a shotgun?"
    "DO THE ZAP!"
One of the spikes thrusted out at Robin, who sent a thin, yellow stream of electricity into it. Eryn knew that his attacks were only strong enough to cause someone discomfort, like a handshake prank buzzer, but this somehow caused every part of the entity to become paralysed. He released his grip, and sure enough the spikes were still stuck in place. Since Robin's power had such a low output, Eryn assumed he'd be able to keep this up for quite a while. He walked up to a spike, past the sharp bit, and examined it from the side, tapping it a bit.

"Huh. The spike itself isn't red, rather it seems like there are red muscle fibres covering a core."
    "Like a bone?"
"Yeah, actually, that sounds about right."
"This almost feels too easy...isn't this the same thing that got rid of heroes way more powerful than us?"

Eryn considered her point for a moment. This did seem oddly convenient. Before he could follow this train of thought, he felt movement from the spike, which suddenly lost its rigidity and slammed into him like a whip, throwing him across the room. He bounced off the sofa and onto the ground.

    "yOU tRicked mE yOu bAsTArd"

The entity's entire mass seeped into the room, forming the figure of a blood-red skeletal deer, with grotesque muscle tissue covering parts of it and as tall as the room it was in. The entity evidently still had plenty of mass to spare, covering the inner walls of the room and sprouting spikes all over, preparing to strike again. Its skull was unable to express any kind of emotion, nor did it probably want to. The lack of breathing gave it an eery, unnatural stillness. The only parts that hadn't moved were the spots that Robin was directly applying electricity too, so Eryn came to the conclusion that it was only a regional effect, and that the entity was only feigning weakness across the rest of its body.

    "Stop playing with your food."

The spikes shot out at the trio at an even faster pace than before, and Sydney had to create a separate bubble shield for each of them now that they were separated. As it made its assault, the main body started to slowly approach Sydney.

It's been toying with you this entire time.

Use the energy gun. Electricity might have been underwhelming, but the good old "beam that cuts through metal walls like butter" sounds a bit more promising.
Freeze it long enough for all of you to regroup, then make everyone invisible.

    Telekinetically suplex the main body.
Compress the mass into a small enough area so that Robin can electrocute the entirety of it at once.

  • "Our Small Victory"

Location: Eryn's living room, Time: 00:17 (Midnight)

Eryn froze the spikes coming at him again, but only the ones that were targetting him specifically. Sydney dropped the bubble shield that was around him when she noticed this, letting him pull the energy gun towards himself. He aimed and fired at the main body without any hesitation, sending a continuous beam at it. It wasn't noticable during the day for obvious reasons, but in the dark living room the light was almost blinding, forcing Eryn to look away while firing. The beam stopped abruptly without Eryn's intention, and the gun started making a beeping noise. When Eryn checked it, there was a flashing red battery symbol on the side of it.

    "You shitting me right now?"

When he looked back at 'Predator-01', there was clear damage done to it. The beam appeared to have permantently destroyed parts of it's mass. He had also set his wall on fire, which was apparantly capable of instantly dematerialising its mass, which was probably why it was so hastily attempting to get out of the flames as quick as possible, so much so that it had stopped using spike attacks against the others. That last part was pretty good for Eryn, since he had just about reached his limit trying to freeze it. He likely wouldn't be able to do that again. Within the main body, now that parts of it were destroyed, Eryn could see a small device with a yellow glowing symbol on it. The symbol depicted a single small circle sprouting a few large wings which bent to cover itself. He looked back and forth from the device to the gun, seeing the same symbol slightly etched on the weapon. The entity pulled in all the mass from the walls into the main body, then hurled itself at Eryn, likely in a moment of pure rage.

Even so, since it attacked with all of its mass attached to the main body, it smashed through the shields that Sydney put up to block it's path, and managed to stab deeply into the bubble shield she ended up putting him, just barely missing Eryn. He fell backwards, startled, as the entity started stabbing right through the shield and onto the ground, as if the shield wasn't there. Eryn, in a panicked state, went invisible without thinking and scrambled to his feet, bolting behind the sofa with Sydney since she had promptly dropped the bubble shield once it proved to be useless.

The entity turned back around and prepared to charge at one of the other two. The main body at covered up it's wounds, but this meant it'd have slightly less mass to attack with.

Well shit. You don't have the strength to freeze its spikes or its charges anymore, but that doesn't mean telekinesis is totally out of the question. Alternatively, you still have a shotgun.

Fire the shotgun at around where the device appeared to be.
Pull Robin over to you and make everyone invisible.

Chuck the entire entity out the window.
Compress the mass into a small enough area so that Robin can electrocute the entirety of it at once.

  • "Our Small Victory"

Location: Eryn's living room, Time: 00:21 (Midnight)

Eryn pulled his shotgun to him and fired at the main body before it could start its charge. He was almost thrown backwards by the recoil due to his poor footing, and his ears started ringing immediately. The entity was staggered, but the wound started healing as soon as it had appeared. The shotgun didn't permanently destroy any mass like the energy gun did, so the entity wouldn't be harmed in the long run. Even so, he started firing repeatedly at around the area he saw the device, never giving it a chance to fully close up the holes. Sydney and Robin caught on quickly, also firing their weapons at it. Robin, having a sawn-off variant, actually was thrown backwards by his first shot.

The entity, despite being staggered by the first few shots, started to steady itself and prepare again to charge, now ignoring the various holes constantly appearing and dissapearing in its main body. It was then, however, that Eryn saw the faint glow of the device behind the mass that constantly shifted to try and hide it. His shoulder was hurting from the repeated shots, and as such his aim was shaky. When he fired, he did manage to hit the device, but only barely thanks to the weapon spread. The device was evidently tougher than it looked, with only light scratches appearing on it. It took a few more shots from everybody to create a crack in the transparant protective surface.

Eryn heard the voice coming from the device again, but literally couldn't understand a single word over the ringing in his ears. The entity's main body deformed back into strings of mass and left the room through the small cracks and holes in the walls, not leaving a single trace that it had ever been there, except for the fire and bullet holes which were caused by Eryn and Co. anyway. He faintly heard Sydney calling to him about something, but couldn't properly hear her either.

    "...What?"
    "..."
    "wHaT?"

    "WHaTt?!"

He looked to Robin, who appeared to be doubled over and laughing hysterically at them, and Eryn noticed that he had actually put his ear protectors on before firing. His hearing started to return as the laughter became more clear. Eryn's father poked his head into the room.

    "You kids alright?"

Sydney quickly snuffed out the fire by smothering it with a bubble shield.

    "Uh.....yeah."

"...Cool." His father left the room. The three of them promptly collapsed to the floor, with Eryn and Sydney being exhausted and Robin presumably just trying to join in.

    "So, about that symbol..."
"No. I don't want to think about it. I've dealt with too much bullshit for today, I can't afford to use any brain power on anymore bullshit."
    "Alright...tomorrow, then?"
    "If we're alive tomorrow...."

Good Point. What will you do for the rest of the night?

    Go the fuck to sleep.
Stay vigilante the whole night, and then just sleep in. It's a Saturday, you won't miss much.

Take turns keeping watch and sleeping

  • "Our Small Victory"

Location: Eryn's living room, Time: 03:00am

It was Eryn's turn to keep watch now, as he sat up in his sleeping bag. He constantly checked the room with TK Sonar whenever he felt the slightest movement in the walls, but he couldn't tell if there was actually someone there or if it was just literally any other explanation. He was getting twitchy and was startled even by the occasional leaf blowing onto the window.

To help pass the time, he started browsing his phone. A few more details had come out about Suplex Stan's arrest, but one that stuck out was the fact that a brain implant was found in his head. Stan claimed he had no knowledge of the implant, and when asked about his motives for the robbery, he said he didn't remember any of it nor could he think of a reason that he'd risk dissapearing by acting in the open like that. Eryn wasn't too worried about it, until he saw the released picture of the impant, which had the same glowing red symbol from the entity and the energy gun.

    What ARE you?

He knew he said that he wasn't bothered to talk about the symbol until the next day, but now he couldn't stop thinking about it. He closely inspected the symbol that was on the energy gun using the dim light of his phone screen. He knew that he probably hadn't seen the symbol itself, but it's shape was what bothered him. Multiple wings coming off a smaller circle in the middle. Its familiarity knawed at his mind, as if it was something he should have been obvious to him immediately. But he didn't remember until now, or at least didn't want to consider the possibility of what it might have been. He knew he might have remembered if he checked his notebook for it, but wanted to put it off for as long as he could. But with the symbol appearing in so many places in such a short time frame, it was becoming impossible to suppress the memory.

After finally looking through the notebook, it was undeniable. The symbol was the sillhouette of
The Angel, the being that caused the event fittingly known as Angel's Massacre, shortly before the superhero dissapearances had first begun. He was so tired and mentally drained at this point that he didn't even know how to react, though. Eventually he changed shifts with Robin and went back to sleep.

    Location: Downtown, Time: ???

This used to be a recurring dream for Eryn, especially in the days directly after Angel's Massacre, but he hadn't had this one for a long time. He was in a small store, looking at different goggles for the superhero suit he was still working on. At one point he ended up in a conversation with another person his age, who gave off the vibe that they were getting goggles for the same purpose. He couldn't remember her face or what exactly was said, however, as it happened so long ago.

Everything in that scene was now a blur for him, as it transitioned into a scene of flames and rubble. He was in his superhero suit now, albeit a much earlier version with cheaper materials, no logo arm band, no weapon, and a black bandana instead of the respirator mask that would have been much more useful here. The girl he was talking to, along with other customers, were injured on the floor as part of the ceiling had collapsed in and parts of the building were on fire. Outside, as it was night time, the sky was lit up red with the flames coming from all the other buildings that had been damaged. And in the distance, the clear figure of The Angel was floating above the chaos, sending it's beams of destruction down at the city indiscriminately. Screams were heard everywhere, barely letting Eryn focus on any single thought. The Battle Alert app was going crazy with rapid notifications. Heroes were rushing around, some helping with rescues and others going directly towards The Angel. He could hear the footsteps of The Sentinels closing in.

Eryn knew how this would end. He knew how it always ended.

You might not be able to change what really happened, but for some reason you feel compelled to try and do better anyway.

Eryn heard air raid sirens starting to go off, along with the national Emergency Alert System being broadcasted to nearby TVs that were on display, and various radio equipped devices. He lifted one person in the store, but realised that his present day telekinesis was several times stronger than it was back then, and that strength had carried over into the dream. This was the first time it was noticeable. 10 months worth of improvement really made a difference. He lifted everybody in the store, 4 people. He was now used to flinging around much higher numbers. He floated them out of the store. When he got onto the streets, he saw a Sentinel approaching in the distance, out of a smoke cloud. He had never seen one up close, so its exact features were currently blurry.

"Sentinels 05 through 13, do not allow anything to approach Angel-00. The rest of you, feel free to cleanse the area." The voice he heard earlier from Predator-01 was familiar though, and now he knew why. He had merely forgotten where he had heard it before, and this dream had jogged the memory.

Eryn ran in the opposite direction with the people still floating at his side, towards one of the medical helicopters that had arrived in the area. A tank rolled past him on the way there, in the direction of the Sentinel, and he heard the roaring engines of approaching fighter jets. After turning over the people to the helicopter and making sure it took off safely, he was startled by the tank exploding behind him, probably from being hit by one of Angel's attacks.

He turned around to see the Sentinel trapped in a bubble shield, still a fair distance away, which it broke out of after a few strikes. Sydney was standing in its way, about to engage it with her sword. As Eryn had pulled off the small rescue much quicker than he had in reality, he had arrived at this point much sooner and thus the situation was unfamiliar to him. He knew Sydney had fought a Sentinel, but he hadn't actually seen it, so what happened next may have been completely inaccurate as far as he knew. It was uncharted territory, and he had no idea what to expect.

Usually you'd have the benefit of having seen the dream several times, but things are different now that you've done things early.

Run past them to assist the heroes that are engaging The Angel.

Eryn turned invisible as was customary if he was going to use the ghostly approach. As Sydney was about to cross blades with the Sentinel, Eryn sent a sizeable chunk of debris at it from the side, staggering it before they clashed. Sydney struck at it's joints, creating a few sparks, but she didn't seem to actually debilitate the Sentinel. When it tried to counter attack, he froze it's arms like he did to Predator-01, allowing Sydney to continue her assault. Eryn had no idea how durable or skillful a Sentinel would be in reality, but he was happy for some success in the dream.

The combined assaults from Sydney's carefully placed strikes and Eryn's general bombardment of debris seemed to be enough to force the Sentinel to it's knees. It felt odd to be playing support for Sydney, since support was her whole role as Aegis. But hey, it was working. Eryn looked up to see fighter jet's firing missiles at The Angel, which responded with a single continuous beam attack moving in a sweeping motion through the air, destroying both the missiles and the fighters. Then he saw its eye move downwards to aim at Sydney, who was about to ram her sword in between the Sentinel's neck plates.

Without thinking, he flung her into the store directly next to her, through the window. The Angel fired a beam, creating an explosion where Sydney had been a split second prior. The explosion sent Eryn onto his back and forced his invisibility to drop momentarily. If he had been a bit closer, he'd have been screwed over by shrapnel. The feeling was all too familiar for him. Ringing in his ears, blurred vision, increasing temperatures, sweating on the inside of his mask, covered in shattered pieces of asphalt.

He sat up and saw more Sentinels walking out of the smoke cloud. Someone else landed in between them and Eryn though, wearing a long black hooded coat and a full-face gas mask with a digital screen displaying cartoonish turqoise eyes. This was the veteran hero known as Viper, real name Adrien Wallace. A telekinetic, and the person who had been teaching Eryn how to use his powers up to this point. Their notebook page was the most painful one to rip out. Now was the part where the dream moved back on track to historical events, after the brief detour.

Eryn saw Viper snap his fingers, resulting in a loud gun-like noise, and gaping holes appeared in the chests of the distant approaching Sentinels, causing them to collapse immediately. Eryn recognised this as Viper's "concentrated shockwave" technique. There was still so much left he could have learnt. Viper approached and helped Eryn to his feet, who couldn't get any words out of his mouth.

"Sorry I'm late. There were logistical difficulties."
The sound of a second wave of fighters drew their attention back to the Angel. The large barrage of missiles had hit this time, briefly lighting up the Angel's forcefield before it flickered and died. The fighters themselves, however, met the same fate as the previous wave. Viper started to run towards it.

Despite the differences you've caused, the overall outcome doesn't seem to have been affected so far.

Eryn took out his somehow undamaged phone and broadcasted a worded request as opposed to the usual emergency requests that didn't have words attached.
ANGEL'S SHIELDS ARE DOWN. ATTACK WHILE YOU STILL CAN.
It occured to him that The Angel wasn't actually widely known as "The Angel" just yet since this was its first appearance. He altered the message
THE MASSIVE FLYING ENTITY'S SHIELDS ARE DOWN. ATTACK WHILE YOU STILL CAN.
There we go. Eryn now started running after Viper, approaching The Angel. As it came into sight, he could see more clearly the heroes that were already attacking it. Even his father, who was supposed to be retired as a superhero, had become active for this one night. He was a flying, flaring pyromancer who was tanking Angel's beam attacks by absorbing them, protecting the other heroes as they made their attacks. His flamethrower-type attacks didn't do much against Angel's metal frame, though.

Looking behind him for a moment, Eryn saw other heroes disengaging from their battles to focus on Angel, everybody trying to converge on it. Many of them were high-tier heroes with huge power outputs. If they could close the distance quick enough, they should have been fine. That wasn't what really happened, but there was a chance to change it now. Eryn saw Angel extending it's wings out wide, and flapping them once forward, sending a massive and destructive gust of wind towards the approachers.

    Not this time.

Eryn jumped in front of Viper and formed a telekinetic wall to dampen the wind gust, mitigating its effects. Not only was he stronger now, but the pain factor in the dream was almost non-existent. Sure, his forearms were broken now, but he hardly noticed in this environment. The gust of wind was still strong enough to blow back the flying heroes, but the grounded heroes were fine. Eryn had done the action instead of Viper in the dream, instead of the other way around like what really happened, so Viper was now able to focus on his attacks earlier.

Not only was Viper sending his shockwaves at Angel, but he was forming blades made of solidified air and sending them at them, piercing Angel in various locations. "Compression blades", he called them. He had such a mastery of telekinesis even on the molecular level that Eryn had never even attempted to replicate before. Not only that, but Viper was simultaneously crushing one of Angel's large metallic wings, forcing them to gradually descend. The flying heroes had caught up and begun their attacks as well. That's it, they were winning now that everybody who was able was making their attacks both together AND way earlier. And yet, Angel was still able to curl it's wings together. There was an ominous charing noise coming from them, and Eryn immediately wanted to wake up. This was how he discovered his debilitating weakness to EMPs. The heroes had every advantage now, and seemed to have Angel on the ropes, but he couldn't see any alternative outcome now.

    Wake up.

The gaps between Angel's feathers had begun glowing red, creating electrical arcs between them.

    Please, wake up...

He didn't want to see any further.

    Get me out of here.

The Angel spread its wings out, sending the EMP across a half mile radius. The electrical lights in the buildings that were still functional had gone out in an instant. Flying heroes that relied on tech were sent plummeting to the ground. Those with mechanical armour were fried within their suits. Most energy-manipulating heroes suffered at least some form of negative effect. Viper's mask sparked and died, parts of it lighting on fire, prompting him to rip it off his face. And Eryn was sent to the ground, twitching and and writhing and screaming in pain, flickering rapidly in and out of invisibility, small objects around him being affected by random unintentional acts of rogue telekinesis. He had only experienced it once, and yet he never forgot the feeling.

Viper rushed to his side and started gathering debris to start making a makeshift shelter around Eryn, focusing his strength on securely ramming pieces into the ground and creating a tight weave of metal.

    Stop it!

"Kid, calm down, you'll be safe!"

I don't want to be! Attack the Angel!

Eryn saw the Angel's eye lighting up behind Viper, preparing to fire at the groups of off-guard heroes. He tried desperately to call out, telling Viper to finish it off instead of protecting him, but he had no control over any of his bodily functions.

The Angel fired, and that was that.

Location: Eryn's living room, Time: 09:57am

He woke up in a cold sweat, the feeling of the EMP's effects still lingering. He looked up to see Sydney sitting next to his sleeping bag, apparantly having been waiting.

"Hey, you. You're finally awake. You were trying to cross the border, right? Walked right into that imperial ambush, same as us--" She stopped her memeing once she took a closer look at his face.
    "H-hey, are you ok?!"

    "Angel's back..." he said weakly.

    "Huh?"

He sat up. "The Angel is back in play." Sydney awkwardly darted her eyes around.

"Yeah...I was meaning to talk to you about that when I brought up the symbol last night...."

The dream may have ended just now, but the real nightmare is far from over.

    Discuss it now.
    Talk about it over breakfast.

Mask your concerns and make light of the situation.
Wait until after you've properly eaten and cleared your head.

    Location: Dining room, Time: 10:05AM

Eryn yawned, head in his hands while sitting at the table with everyone else. His dad was busy reparing the holes in the walls from last night. He found it useful to be able to just eat while listening to Sydney doing all the thinking for him. He was still sore from both the battle against Stan and last night's battle.
"So Stan was apparantly mind controlled by an implant bearing Angel's symbol."
    "Yup."
"And he was using guns bearing the same symbol."
    "Yup."
"And Predator-01, also having a device with that symbol inside them, has been trying to exterminate super-powered individuals that made themselves known."
    "Yup."
"And Angel is responsible for the deaths of numerous heroes, and left after killing most of the ones that tried to attack it."
"It feels like there's a conclusion to be made, but I've barely registered what any of those sentences mean," Robin chimed in.
Sydney sighed, looking to Eryn. He took a long sip of orange juice and placed the empty glass down.

"So they all want us dead, presumably all on Angel's behalf. Or, y'know, whoever controls them. Y'know, the voice we kept hearing from Sentinels and Predator."
Sydney almost seemed to flinch at the mention of the Sentinels. He had to remember that everybody who was there would have experienced their own nightmare, be it an actual dream or not. Every hero worth their salt had their own story of Angel's Massacre.
"So, for simplicity, I say we call them 'Angel Gang' until we find a more suitable name."
    "Angel Gang?"
    "Sounds great!"
"But if we're going to do anything about this, we're going to need to get some more intel. We can't exactly just find Angel Gang and beat them up, even if we were strong enough to do that."
"And as it happens, everybody that COULD have beaten Angel are now all either dead or in hiding."
"All we really have with us is the energy gun, which is out of power. A shame, really, since it's probably one of the main reasons we're alive right now. The police probably seized some extra batteries from the thugs yesterday, but those might be hard to get."
"I don't really feel like repeating last night's incident just to try and interrogate the scary red thing."
    "Ooh, wait!"
They turned to Sydney, who had suddenly become excited.
"Professor Harley can probably reverse engineer that thing!"
    "Who?"
    "The guy who built Zenmo?"
"Yeah! He's running a workshop to help heroes with tech related issues. Secret for obvious reasons of the not-wanting-to-dissapear kind, so we're only supposed to tell trusted heroes about it through word of mouth and stuff. It's where I got my sword. He can probably hook you up with some new gear too! Oh man, I hope he's got some upgrades for me~"
"...and reverse engineer the gun, right?"
    "Right, right, of course~"
It kind of felt like she was just wanted an excuse to go and upgrade her sword, but it didn't seem like such a bad idea either. Sydney probably wasn't going to let him refuse either.

    What do?

Go to the workshop right now.
    Finish your food first.

Make a sword pun before agreeing to go.
Try and get spare batteries from the police.

    Finish your food first.

  • "Our Small Victory"

Eryn agreed to go, but also wanted to finish eating first. The rest of breakfast felt pretty awkward now, and Sydney looked like she wanted to get to the workshop as soon as possible. During this time, Robin had also asked to tag along to see if he could get any gear that'd help him reach at least some level of combat capability. It seemed reasonable, so Eryn agreed to that too. When they finally left, Sydney's eyes looked dead inside, as if she had been waiting an eternity despite only 15 minutes passing.

    Location: Streets, Time: 10:20AM

Sydney had suggested that they walk out in the open in full costume, to show that they hadn't disappeared. It made sense, since by drawing attention to themselves yesterday, they had literally marked themselves for death according to the public. She insisted that displaying their nigh impossible survival for everyone to see would start to give them hope. It would apparently be good for popularity too, since people were frequently asking for pictures and autographs while they walked. Robin had agreed to follow at a distance as he didn't have a costume yet, and didn't want his real identity associated with them.

The destination was in a subway that had been abandoned due to damage from a collapsing ceiling when Angel attacked the surface. The city's resources had been focused on rehousing, building repairs on the surface, memorials etc. and apparently this single station wasn't as important. The location seemed sketchy, but he trusted her. He couldn't judge until he saw for himself, right? After all, if Sydney managed to get such a ridiculously high tech sword from there, they had to be legit. And if this really was the same Professor Harley that built Zenmo, they'd be going to the best roboticist and software engineer in the city.

Thinking of Sydney's sword, he began feeling several questions pop up in his head. Why she was so obsessed with upgrades, how the Sentinel shattered the old one, how her fight with them actually went, that kind of stuff. This was probably as good a time as any to ask.

    Conversation?

Ask about why she wants upgrades so badly if this one is already so cool.
Don't ask anything, just head to the workshop.

Ask about her general sword obsession.
Ask about her battle against the Sentinel.

"So, what's with you and swords anyway?"
    "Hm?"
"Well, you know...you seem to have a thing for them."
"Well what's not to love about them? They're deadly, nimble, shiny, cool looking, all that stuff." He noticed that instead of sounding enthusiastic, she sounded tired, and was fidgeting with her mask as she walked.

"Ok, but everybody knows that. What made you specifically start to use them so heavily?"

"I was already a fencer, so it seemed like a reasonable weapon choice. My shields aren't exactly suited to offense, so I kept a sword with me for emergencies." Despite her wearing a mask, she turned her head away slightly as if trying to avoid eye contact. "That's probably not what you meant..." she mumbled afterwards. She straightened up, yet also tensed up.

"Back during Angel's massacre, my bubble shields were broken for the first time. First by Angel's beam attacks and then by a Sentinel. I'd never considered the possibility of it happening, and the people I was protecting ended up dead because of it. I couldn't do anything against a Sentinel in that fight, after it shattered my first sword, and relied upon other heroes to bail me out."

She let out a soft sigh, and her voice seemed to be getting quieter and quieter. "And then, last night, my bubble shield was broken by the Predator. You're only still here with me because you managed to get out of the way in time. I haven't exactly been the best protector recently." She kicked away a rock that was in her way while walking, but was slowing down regardless. "So yeah, I've been focusing on swords because it's the only way I can think to protect you, and everyone else. I've been pursuing a blade that can stand up against a Sentinel, so that I can actually be useful. And now that Angel and her gang are back, I need that more than ever.."

Eryn really had no idea how to respond to all that. It was certainly more than he bargained for when asking the question. Seeing Sydney hurt was somehow more painful for him than all the injuries he had sustained in the two prior battles. They had now arrived near the entrance of the underground workshop.

    Now what?

Refute her mindset and encourage her by reminding her of her past successes, including how her shields saved your life against Stan's thugs.
    Enter the workshop.

Compliment her desire to continue improving herself despite initial failures, in reference to your own similar desire after Angel's massacre.
Offer to spar with her later to help you both improve at your respective skillsets.

"Well, if you want to get better at that, we should probably train together later. I've got some improving to do too."
Sydney turned her head to him slightly. He couldn't read her expression at all from behind that blank mask. Without even a mouth design like most stage masks had, the eyes felt like they could pierce right through him. Eventually she nodded to him, and walked into the subway station. Past the entrance, the path into the rest of the station was blocked off by debris. Sydney knocked on the wall, just as Robin caught up with them, who was wearing a ski mask now.

    "Tax evasion!"
"What?" As he said this, one of the debris pieces dissapeared, revealed to have only been a hologram. He followed Sydney through the gap, leading into the workshop.

    "Oh.."

The station was intact. Most of the debris was likely a cover up to keep the place secret. There were shelves everywhere, divided into aisles based on category, featuring various high tech tools and accessories. Literally a toy store for superheroes. There were a few people in labcoats, each seeming to supervise their own category of tools. There seemed to be around 15 superhero-looking people walking around. There was also a desk at the other end of the station, where the professor was sitting. His hair was silver and his eyes had dark bags underneath them, but he didn't look terribly old.

"Huh, there's more people here than usual. Probably because of yesterday."

Upon hearing her voice, a few of them turned their heads to her.

    "Aegis is back!"
    "She's alive?!"
    "They didn't dissapear?"
    "Who's the new guy?"

Several lines such as those could be heard from them. Eryn inferred that Sydney was well known in this place. Syndey gave them a small wave before turning to him.
"You can ask the professor at the desk about the energy gun. You can probably guess where to find me." She pointed with her thumb to the `Bladed weapons` aisle behind her and promptly zoomed off to browse it. Robin headed to the `Miscellaneous accessories` aisle.

    ".....Right."

After approaching the desk and explaining the situation to the professor, the man unscrewed a panel on the energy gun and took a look at its internals.

"Curious. Externally It's completely unfamiliar, but the internal systems are almost identical to the design of the energy guns that Cerberus were developing."
    "Cerberus?"
"A company I used to work for. The guns were being developed for military use, but they were still in the testing phase when the company collapsed 7 years ago. Simultaneous destruction of all facilities due to an unknown cause, freaky stuff. I'm glad I quit before that.." The man shook his head, then gave Eryn a reassuring smile. "You don't have to worry about all that, though. I'll have this recreated for you in a few days. I know how useful these things were for you during your battle against Suplex Stan."
"Ah geez, you watched that--" Eryn suddenly felt the presence of a labcoated woman behind him, glancing back at her. She was using a tape measure on various parts of his torso, including arms.
    "Uh..."
"We watch every superhero battle available, for the purpose of preparing custom tools for them in advance, Mr Ecto. And as yours was the first in a long time, you and Aegis have a lot of eyes on you," she said.
"Ecto, this is Ms. Lilith, our costumer. Talk to her if you have any aesthetic troubles."
"And you're in dire need of an upgrade.." she finished taking the measurements and left as quickly as she had appeared, into an unseen section of the station. Eryn made a deep sigh. He looked at his chained 8-ball, then at the aisles of possible new weapons.

    Now what?

Since he'd been using guns in his two previous battles to some success, he figured that he may as well continue to do so despite a lack of skill. At the end of the aisle he saw Robin, who must have come from the miscellaneous aisle, discussing something with the ranged aisle's supervisor. In the aisle itself, he browsed a few ranged weapons that weren't exactly conventional. If he wanted a regular firearm, he could just get one from his dad. While browsing, the main items that stuck out to him were as follows:

    "Taser Bow"
A bow able to fold into a compact form. Using the accompanying eyepiece, which can fit multiple lense shapes, the user selects up to 7 targets before firing a red energy node at the centre target. The target is electrocuted by the node, which at the same time sends out its own electrical beams to tether the other targets, electrocuting and restraining all 7 adversaries simultaneously. Typical range of up to 30 meters. Each charge cycle provides 20 shots, and recharging takes an entire night. The bow can be used as a sturdy melee weapon in an emergency.
    592742

    "Concussive Pistol"
A handgun that fires blasts of concussive force at the opponent, capable of breaking bones upon impact and of sending adversaries flying up to 10 meters. The size of the "iris" at the front of the barrel can be adjusted with a dial on the side, allowing for both precise and concentrated blasts, or high spread blasts with less force behind them but are harder to miss with and can hit multiple opponents. The pistol draws in heat from it's surroundings to convert to kinetic energy for each shot, the amount of which can be decided by how long the user charges it by holding down the trigger (a standard trigger pull will knock a regular person over and cause rib fractures).
    592748

    "Flash-freeze gun"
Fires a quick beam of energy that instantly freezes a maximum area of 3 Square-meters upon impact. Heat removed from the frozen area is exhausted from the sides of the barrel after every shot. Like the Taser Bow, it can be recharged overnight with each charge cycle providing 25 shots. Target area size is adjustable.
    592757

    "Sniper Railgun"
A handheld railgun designed for long range combat, with a range of 600 meters. The rounds are capable of tearing through tanks. A single magazine holds 10 rounds, and the gun comes with 5 spare magazines. Specialised ammunition is required, which won't be available at most gun stores. Extra ammunition can be aquired from the workshop at any time.

Eryn picked up the taser bow, which folded away into a neat messenger-bag looking thing that he could wear over his shoulder. There were various available eye-pieces, so he took the one that could fit directly onto his left goggle lense. A HUD appeared in his vision, which he was able to control by moving his pupils and winking. It was an odd experience and he was a little slow with it, but he'd get the hang of it soon enough. Moments after he minimised it, he saw Robin approaching him.

"Hey, nice bag! I didn't know those counted as ranged weapons..."
"Thanks. It holds the tormented souls of my fallen foes."
    "...Neat..."
    "So, what'd you get?"
"An auto-medkit from miscellaenous, but I also talked to the main dude in charge of ranged weapons, and he's gonna make something custom for me! I want my powers to actually be useful, instead of having to rely on a tool, so we're figuring out some way of amplifying them."
"Oh, that actually sounds pretty interest--"
    "Oh, there you are!"
    "Huh?"

Eryn turned around and saw a girl running up to them. Her snake-eyes style visor was the only part of her mask alongside her LED cat-ear headphones, leaving her mouth exposed. She wore a long, white jacket that had a large collar that was folded up, along with an oversized orange scarf that acted as two thin capes trailing her, and had bleach blonde hair tied in a ponytail. She doubled over, out of breath.

    "You're Ecto, right?"
    "I--"
"Of course you are, you're the hero with the most media coverage right now, considering that you're literally the ONLY officially active hero right now alongside Aegis. Although, I'm not sure why everyone reacted to her walking in and not you.."
"Aegis is a regular attendant here, so we've been more concerned with her safety than his."

Dammit, how many more people do I have to talk to today?

The new voice came from someone at the end of the aisle, half hiding behind it. They were wearing a dark leather coat and a jack-o-lantern helmet. The helmet's face was glowing green instead of the typical flame-orange, and the holes were emitting a green mist.

"Yeah, that's Jack-O-Lite by the way. If we're all using our made up names, though, I'm Kumori."

Eryn felt his social energy depleting by the second.

    "U h u h"
"That being said, your costume needs some work if you want to keep your identity safe, Eryn."
"Yeah, yeah, I'll sort it out--- WAIT, WHAT?"
"Listen man, I was there when that fire broke out at school. You dissapear and then suddenly a shabby looking hero appears wearing the exact same pants and shoes? You're lucky that basically nobody pays enough attention to you to notice." Eryn heard Robin chuckling at that last line. "You're no better, Robin. A ski mask isn't nearly enough."

"GOD DAMMIT!" Robin yanked off his mask and chucked it onto the floor.

"Indeed. Ecto, you may have one-upped us all by being willing to act in the open mere seconds after an alert was sent out, but you are still severely lacking in focus."
    "Uh..yeah, I get it, I--"

Jack-O-Lite walked out fully from behind the aisle, revealing a broom being balanced on the index finger of his newly visible hand.

    W h a t ? ?

"To prove to myself that I can at least trump you in focus, I have made it my personal task to never let this broom fall, no matter what!"

    W h a t i s w r o n g w i t h e v e r y o n e ? ? ? ?

"He's a little salty about you being the one to defy fear and become the first hero return to the public spotlight" Kumori whispered to him.
"Anyway, to cut to the chase, me and Pampkin head here were planning to take down a Werewolf tonight and were hoping you and Aegis could help out. Wanna come?"

    "Ugh, sure, whatever..."

"Cool! We were thinking about what time to strike, since they'll be weaker during the day, but since I'm a vampire, I'll be weaker too. I guess it's up to you?"

When will you attack the Werewolf?

    Go now.
    Ask Sydney.

    Go after lunch.
    Go at night.

"Let's get it over with right away, I guess."
Eryn headed over to the bladed weapons aisle and saw Sydney, who was still browsing the swords. She now had a more robust looking sheath at her side, which held two swords in it.
"Hey, Aegis! We're going to fight a werewolf!" He called out to her.
    "A were-what-now?"
    "I said what I said."
"..Cool," she rejoined the group and took a look at the two new arrivals, then whispered to Eryn. "Why's he got a broom on his finger though?"
"Something about focus, I dunno, wasn't really focused on social interaction." He whispered back. He heard a brief, annoyed grunt coming from Jack-O-Lite.
    "Of course you weren't.."

They went to the inventory record keeper, which was a dude at a desk with a notebook, who took note of what they were taking.

    Ecto, Ranged, Taser bow.
Aegis, Bladed, Double sheath and Red-Spiral sword.
    Jack-O-Lite, Ranged, Gauss Chaingun.
    Kumori, Costumer, Self-repairing coat.
    Alias-Pending-#42, Miscellaneous, Auto-medkit.
    Alias-Pending-#42, Ranged, Custom reservation #212.

After Robin retrieved his ski mask, they headed out.

    Location: Streets, Time: 11:10AM

As they walked, Jack-O-Lite and Kumori lead the way to where the Werewolf was supposed to be, with the latter using a parasol since her outfit didn't offer much skin protection to her face. Eryn questioned the practicality of such an outfit for a vampire, but kept his concerns to himself.

"What's the deal with this werewolf dude anyway?"
"Oh, he's a total asshole! One night about a week ago, I was walking home as one does. Then I see a werewolf and a vampire duking it out in the middle of the street, and this werewolf was kicking some ass. The vampire got knocked over to me and then attacked me, drinking my blood to recover and stuff before fucking off into the night in his bat form. The vampire is the most at fault I think, but then this werewolf decided to loot my wallet from my corpse too!"
"Not a shred of dignity from this guy, huh?"
"Nope. Anyway, I woke up as a vampire, had my life ruined, became a superhero, yadda yadda. Pumpkin head over here helped me track the werewolf down recently since they've just been causing a ruckus in general in this area."
"Aye. I specialise in hunting down creatures of the night such as this. Normally I'd be using silver bullets, but I'm gonna try out the new gauss gun for this one. And just as a heads up, this specific enemy seems to have already had illusion abilities before becoming a werewolf."
    "Brilliant.."

Eventually they reached a house near a bridge that was used by trains, which casted a shadow over the house. The area looked messy, with litter blowing around everywhere, and poorly maintained roads. The surrounding houses seemed decrepit and abandoned, but the target's house looked fine. In fact, it was the only thing around that seemed like it was being taken care of properly.

"So, Mr. Ecto, do you have a preference for how you do this sort of thing?"

How will you enter? Locks won't be a problem for your powerset.

Bust in through the front door and attack immediately.
Turn the group invisible and sneak in.

Knock and get them to let you in themselves, so you can talk shit to them for a bit.
Have different people enter simultaneously from different entrances, cornering the target.

Eryn walked up to the door and simply knocked on it.
"I seriously doubt that's going to work. Why would THAT be the first idea you'd want to go wi-"
"It's open, come in," an echoing voice from within the house called. Jack-O-Lite groaned as Eryn chuckled to himself and opened the door.

In the middle of the hallway immediately after the front door, was a man sitting in a chair wearing a nicely tailored tuxedo. He was mostly obscured by shadow, but his glowing red eyes were clearly visible. Eryn noticed a distinct cold breeze in the house, despite having intact walls. He was unnerved until he saw 2D purple letters floating around the man, specifically the japanese "" being spammed. This illusion wasn't even trying to disguise itself. Eryn rolled his eyes from behind his goggles and stepped inside fully.

"What, are you a goddamn Dio rip-off now? You know that shit looks stupid in real life, right?"
"No, I just thought they looked cool-"
"Then why are you acting like a generic-ass vampire too, Mr. Not-a-Dio-rip-off? You're a WEREWOLF, right? What's with the freaking tux!?" Eryn began to slowly approach the man.
    "I just like dressing forma-"
"And would it kill you to turn a light on? What's with the breeze, anyway? Did you cheap out on home maintenance?"
    "Please stop interrup-"
"DON'T FUCKING INTERRUPT ME YOU ABSOLUTE WEEDWAGON."

When Eryn got close, he realised that he wasn't detecting any kinetic energy coming from the werewolf, not from breathing nor from even a heartbeat. He motioned for the others to approach and stepped back. Instead of calling him out on it immediately, he allowed the others to talk to the illusion while he discretely tried to find the target's real location using TK Sonar.

"What are you kids doing here anyway? I'm laying low and minding my own business here!"
"That explains why you tried to steal the key to a safe at the local bank, huh?"
"Oh? And what evidence is there of that?"
"Well, before you stole the key, I swapped it with a banana with my initials carved into it! A banana that you, for some reason, have proudly displayed in your flower vase over there!"
"Huh?" Eryn paused his search for a moment to look at where Kumori was pointing. There was indeed a flower vase with a banana inside it, the letters "V.M" carved into it. Eryn and Sydney stifled their lafter, while Robin just let theirs out, and Jack-O-Lite facepalmed. Or, well, pumpkin-palmed. Eryn resumed his search.
"Why'd he keep it!?" Robin asked through his laughter.
    "Impressive...but I only expected that."
    "Of course he did."
"Oh, I did. I expected you to swap it out with the banana," Eryn's attention was pulled from his search again.
This is about to get way out of hand, isn't it?
"...so, I stole the key BEFORE I stole it,"
    Oh God, it is.
"...and hid it inside the banana before closing it back up! You delivered it right to me!" The man then took out a key from his pocket, letting the limited light in the room glint brightly off its edge.
This can't be real. Jack-O-Lite's not even reacting. Did he already know about this!?
"The key that you have, is a fake replica key, that I made!"
    Ok that's not too bad.
    "Funny you should say that!"
Ah shit, here we go again.
"Because I knew you would make a fake key! So I STOLE the fake key that you made,"
How did I end up like this?
"...and swapped it with the real one!"
Is this universe's punishment to me for all my shit-talking?
"So that when you inevitably swapped the fake one for the real one, you would ultimately put the real one back in its place!"
I'm pretty sure this entire conversation was stolen from a youtube sketch.
"In other words, the one you got from that banana, is the fake one!"
Why am I still here? Just to suffer!?
"And now, we get to kick your ass, Markus 'Wallet-thieving' Ryes!"

Kuromi rushed forward and threw a punch at Markus' head, but it phased through, not surprising Eryn.
    "Nani!?"
"You missed one detail, kid." The illusion faded, revealing that nobody was on the chair. Only a phone that was facetiming Markus, who looked like he was sitting on a bed and talking to a laptop. He wasn't even wearing a Tux, just a dirty t-shirt. Eryn by this time had found his true location, a floor above them.
"I'm not THERE. I've been in a completely different building, CHILLING this whole time! Now you'll NEVER find me!" Sydney turned to Eryn.
    "Ecto, can you find the-"
    "Ha, Got'em."
    "Huh?"

Eryn immediately dragged the bed down through the floorboards of the upper level, crashing onto the ground with Markus and his laptop on top of it. Eryn telekinetically pulled Markus towards him, catching him by the neck. His eyes glowed blue, illuminating the area by a substantial amount, as he used continuous telekinesis in order to keep Markus lifted with one arm.
"Completely different building, huh? You've got some nerve trying to pull that after the shitshow you just subjected by poor ears to." Markus' eyes turned red as his fangs started to grow, but was interrupted by a swift bitch slap from Eryn's free hand. The werewolf transformation was completely halted by this, and even reversed.
    "And now,"
SLAP. He interrupted another transformation attempt.
    "My ears,
    SLAP. And another.
    "Shall be,"
    SLAP. And another.
    "AVENGED!"
The final slap was caught by Markus, whose face was now bright red and starting to bruise. Eryn wasn't exactly tall, especially compared to Markus who now stood up properly, with Eryn now lifted off the ground as he maintained his grip on Markus' neck. As he began to try and telekinetically choke him out, Markus grabbed onto Eryn and immediately attempted to suplex him.

    NOT TODAY

At the last moment before impact, Eryn telekinetically stopped himself from hitting the ground, and instead threw Markus off of him and through the nearest wall before landing himself safely on the ground. Red eyes glowed from the darkness of the room Markus was thrown into.
"I know who YOU are, though, Ecto. Stanford's legacy lives within all of us!"
"You've got to be shitting me..."
Walls of the house began to fade away just like the previous illusions. This place was in fact even more run down than the other houses in the area, which Eryn figured would explain the constant breeze he was feeling earlier.

The fully transformed werewolf broke through the wall to confront the group, leaving an even bigger hole than the one already there. It towered over them, at least 9 feet tall and buff as hell. Its claws and fangs glistened with light reflecting from Eryn's goggles. It confidently strode towards them.

    Here he comes.

    Collapse the roof on it.
Bind its limbs using the taser bow.

    Use telekinetic joint-locks on it.

As the Werewolf started its approach, Eryn unslung the metallic bag from his shoulder and unfolded it into the taser bow, taking aim. His eyepiece HUD opened up and a cross-hair appeared in his vision, tracking the movement of his eyes. He set 7 targets on the werewolf's limbs and noticed that the others were also getting ready for combat. Sydney had drawn one of her swords, which had air intakes on the crossguard. She ignited it as red energy almost resembling lava started to spiral around the blade, filling the room with heat. Jack-O-Lite was aiming his chain-gun at it as his pumpkin's face holes glowed green, and a similar green energy started to surround the gun. Robin started charging yellow arcs in his hands and stepped backwards to the rear of the group.

But Kumori was what worried Eryn. She had no weapon, so she entered a hand-to-hand combat stance...which would have been fine if her stance was actually any good. Her fists were raised but weren't properly guarding her head, she was bouncing over-dramatically on her feet like some kind of Street Fighter character, and her body wasn't even properly pointed towards the opponent. He figured that she was probably used to relying on brute strength as a vampire. Glancing back at the werewolf who had paused their approach, he could see that they were smirking at Kumori as they entered a comparatively better stance. He glanced back at Kumori who didn't seem to have noticed the problem, and then back at the werewolf.

The werewolf took another step forward, prompting Eryn to fire the bow at its torso. A red electrical probe shot into it, which then fired additional taser streams to to Eryn's selected targets, binding its limbs together. The beast howled hastily and attempted to stumble towards him, which was when Jack-O-Lite began firing the chain-gun into it, splattering blood around it. Sydney dashed forward and deftly slashed away at it, swift enough for Eryn to have barely registered her movements by the time the werewolf was covered in deep gashes that were literally on fire. The flames went out pretty quick, though. She jumped back as Kumori jumped forward to throw a messy, telegraphed punch into its stomach. Eryn cringed internally at the sight of it, but was satisfied enough when the punch was able to launch the beast backwards through the wall again, about the same distance that he had thrown Markus earlier.

"So, how close are we to winning so far?"
"Usually they'd be dead by now.."

From within the dark room, the light from the taser streams went out as the werewolf presumably broke out of the binding, but the red eyes remained and were only growing in intensity. Eryn could hear it planting its feet and steadying its breath.

    "That's comforting."

It's clearly about to do something, but you aren't sure what. The taser bow can't lock onto targets in a room that dark, but you can still technically fire.

Fire the bow again, using its glowing eyes as an aiming guide.
Tell Sydney to prepare a shield.

    Make fun of it.
Get outside and into a more open area.

Tell Sydney to prepare a shield

  • "Our Small Victory"

    Location: Werewolf's House, Time: 11:40AM

    "Aegis, if you would?"
    "Mhm."
Sydney formed a bubble shield around the group as Eryn prepared to counter attack after the werewolf made its move. Instead of charging at them, though, it jumped through the ceiling and landed in the street, visible to the group through the lack of a wall on that side of the house, or on any side of the house for that matter. Eryn knew what was up, since he didn't feel any kinetic energy in the action, or in the ceiling debris that was falling down. The werewolf was still inside.
    "After it!"
    "Wait, no!"
Despite his warning, Sydney lowered the shield to allow everyone to run outside to meet the enemy. He didn't understand why she'd ignore a warning from him until he saw an illusion of himself running alongside them, along with no longer being able to see his own body. He always remained visible to himself even when using invisibility, so he figured that the werewolf was masking Eryn himself.

He felt the werewolf charging at him with a punch with about the speed of a motorcycle. Eryn was able to react in time to raise his forearms and divert the punch's force across his body and purposefully letting himself get flown backwards to reduce the overall impact just before the fist actually made contact. It was a technique he'd developed specifically to avoid thugs trying to run him over or to counter automatic gunfire, but it was applicable to giant monstrous humanoids too. He felt his forearms bruising from the telekinetic recoil, but it was something he was used to by now.

His feet skidded across the ground as he landed, still facing the beast, and ended up outside due to the aforementioned lack of wall. He could see the others and himself trying to fight the werewolf illusion as it dodged every one of their attacks. Judging from earlier, his voice was probably being masked too.

Whatever, I'll just alert them somehow with telekine--

Before he was able to finish his thought, the werewolf charged again with a claw slash instead of a punch. He was barely able to react with the same defense as before, but a claw still made contact. The tip of the claw had hardly touched him, but had still created a sizable gash on his arm. Before Eryn could land, the werewolf launched follow-up attacks, sending Eryn higher, and getting closer to hitting him properly each time. The combo ended with Eryn being drop-kicked into the ground, which he managed to dampen before he had his bones shattered. Still, the accumulated attacks made him feel like he'd been suplexed the same way as the day before.

Eryn noticed that his body was visible again, and so was the werewolf. Their surroundings were distorted as if a dome was around them, refracting incoming light. It was probably easier for the werewolf to create a masking field like this instead of manually masking individuals. The werewolf itself was still covered in wounds, holding its arm, and staggering towards Eryn. It definitely wasn't as durable as Stan, but it looked just as persistent. Eryn had lost his bearings during the combo, and he couldn't locate the others since all his focus was now going to putting pressure on his wound, which had now stained almost his entire left sleeve with blood.

He could hardly begin to think of a witty response to the situation with his mind clouded by the stinging pain, but he wouldn't had had the chance to anyway as the werewolf dashed again to kick Eryn off the ground and into a different building through the window, breaking through the glass. He again dampened himself to avoid being splattered, but the back of his head still hit the wall of the room he flew into, and his vision abruptly went black.

When he woke up, he was sprawled on the floor with his arm in a puddle of blood, and a splitting headache. There were a couple of small glass shards embedded in his body, causing further light bleeding. It hurt to even raise his head to see the werewolf slowly approaching, which he could barely see anyway as his darkened vision faded in and out. He could feel blood dripping down the back of his head. Eventually he remembered to resume pressure on his arm's wound, but even that felt like it was taking up all of his energy.

The situation forced a memory into his head, of when he was 13 years old and trying to be a hero for the first time by taking part in a rescue effort in a crumbling building while a battle raged outside. He'd ended up injured himself, and only survived because it when he saw Viper in person for the first time, swooping in effortlessly and stabilizing the situation without breaking a sweat.

    He won't come this time.

    ...Who said that?

Eryn heard a faint voice much like his own in his head, but the tone and low inflection made it hard to recognize. He started to hear the werewolf's monologue as it finally reached him, which had only now became audible as the ringing in his ears subsided. The beast looked half dead from the group's earlier efforts already, but that wasn't stopping it right now.

"...then again I guess not all telekinetics are equal, huh? Viper used to destroy me instantly anytime we clashed, but you don't even come close!"

I wish I had some context for that.

It picked Eryn up by the throat, and now he had gotten too tired to keep pressurizing his wound as the bleeding now continued. Looking closer at its eyes, he could see The Angel's emblem glowing behind them.

"On the bright side, I guess I'll never have to deal with anyone as strong as that piece of shit ever again."

Are you gonna cowboy up, or are you just going to hang there and bleed?

In that instant, Eryn's eyes started glowing. His immediate impression was that of confusion. That was only supposed to happen during telekinesis, not before or after. His vision was also tinted light blue as it cleared up, and all the pain in his body immediately went numb. He could clearly feel the kinetic energy of every moment around him, without even actively using the sonar.

Cowboy up? I don't talk like that.

It also occurred to him that the werewolf could have used a much quicker attack rather than trying to choke Eryn. It wasn't even doing that good of a job trying to choke him anyway.

"You used up your remaining energy in that attack combo, huh?"

    Time to "Cowboy up".

Break its mouth open, seeing as it likes to talk shit about Viper so much.
Break its hand open, freeing you from its grip.

    Suplex it.
    Bend its limbs' joints backwards.

    Suplex it.

  • "Our Small Victory"

    Location: Werewolf's House, Time: 11:45AM

"Let's see how you like it, you goddamn furry!" Eryn forced himself closer to the beast. Since he wasn't tall enough to do an actual suplex even if he had the physical strength, he telekinetically lifted the werewolf up and over his body, rotating himself in mid-air since it was still holding his neck, and drove them head-first into the floor. The move had led to Eryn's smaller wounds widening as if they were being torn open as well as tearing some of his muscles, but he couldn't feel that right now. The impact shattered the wooden floorboards as it finally released its grip on him. Eryn followed up with a telekinetically enhanced kick to their torso, making sure his foot never actually made contact, but still hitting them with a force comparable to what they'd tried to punch him with earlier. They flew out the window while a new cut appeared in Eryn's attacking leg.

The illusory bubble around them disappeared at that moment, and Eryn could see everyone else looking into the house they were in through the broken window. It occurred to him now that the bubble would have left the blood on the ground outside visible when the werewolf entered, so that's what probably tipped them off. Their attention was taken by the werewolf that landed in front of them. It tried to step towards the building again, but was interrupted by Robin jumping onto its back and shocking it. Normally his power output was minuscule, so he must have spent the entire battle slowly charging up. The werewolf's fur went comically spiky as the hairs stood on end, warranting an angry snarl from the beast. It threw Robin off with little effort, but was again interrupted by Jack-O-Lite creating what looked like a large green beam attack, hitting it from the side and knocking it across the street. He, Sydney, and Kumori went after it while Robin rushed to meet Eryn has he floated himself out the window.

"You look like you just saw a ghost.." he said, chuckling to himself.

"Dude, you look like you got mauled by a bear!"
"Not too far from the truth. I can't really feel any of it thoug--"
    Don't get ahead of yourself.
Almost as if on cue, the blue tint in his vision dissapeared as it darkened once more, the headache returned, and the pain from his injuries hit him all at once. He quickly lost all the strength he had just gained and collapsed.
"Ok nevermind, I'm feeling it now," he said weakly, feeling a sudden rush of nausea on top of everything else. Robin knelt next to him as he took off his bulky, metallic backpack device that Eryn assumed was the auto-medkit.

His vision at this point was almost completely dark, and his hearing was faded, but eventually he could hear a faint, echoey computerized voice from the medkit.

    Diagnosing...
    Applying pressure...

    Bleeding has ceased.
    Painkiller administered.

The pain was numbed somewhat, and now he could more accurately feel what was happening. Something had enclosed itself over Eryn's wounded arm. He could feel slight weights on where his other wounds were, and assumed they'd been treated already.

    Removing foreign objects...
    Cleaning...
    Disinfecting...

Eryn felt needles jabbing into him near the wound.

    Suturing...
    Applying gauze wrap...

He felt a bandage wrapping tightly around it.

    Tetanus vaccine administered.
    Beginning intravenous treatment.

Not too long after that, Eryn was mostly conscious again and could see his red sleeve rolled up, bandaged, and with an I.V drip tethering him to the medkit. Robin was holding an ice pack on the back of his now bandaged head.

"That thing just does everything, huh?"
"Thank God for that, because I have literally no knowledge about first-aid."

Eryn looked at the other three fighting the werewolf, but could hardly see what was going on through his still blurred vision. He didn't feel like he could pull off any meaningful telekinetic attacks right now.

The others will probably be able to finish this without much trouble, but completely surrendering the kill to them doesn't feel too appealing.

Pull the taser bow to you and attack from long range. The lock-on mechanic can compensate for your blurred vision.
Ask Robin about what happened from their perspective while you were isolated.

You can't focus on it at this range, so tell the others to bring it closer until you can give it a telekinetic bitch slap.
Try talking to that new voice in your head.

"Hey, guys, knock it over this way!"
He saw a blurry flash of green light sending the werewolf into Eryn's visual range. It rolled and bounced on the ground before eventually stopping in front of him. He could see the Angel's emblem glowing red in its eyes again as it snarled weakly at him, literally starting to turn to dust. He took a deep breath, making sure to focus on his wrist. If he just focused with his whole arm like he usually did, he'd probably break the stitches he just received, and the muscles in his shoulders were still weakened. He made a swift slapping motion in the air, throwing almost the same amount of force at its face as the kick he'd used previously. The impact was loud enough to echo throughout the street, and his wrist immediately sprained itself.

    "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YOUUUUUU!"

The werewolf had its head knocked into the ground and lost consciousness. Or maybe it had finally died from its wounds since it was turning to ash. Eventually it was nothing but a dust pile, except for a small, cylindrical object bearing the Angel's emblem, almost identical to the one seen in Predator-01. He recalled hearing that the police had retrieved a similar brain implant from Suplex Stan, so Eryn was able to start connecting some more dots.

Sydney, Kumori, and Jack-O-Lite had rushed back.
"Before you say anything, I'd like to let you all know that I'm claiming this kill, even though that slap probably wasn't what actually killed it."

"Ok, he's the real Ecto.." Sydney said with a sigh of relief, sitting down next to him and Robin. Kumori was holding her head and pacing around frantically.

"I almost got Ecto killed...I meet the first active hero in 10 months and the first thing I do is send him into a death trap..."

Jack-O-Light cleared his throat awkwardly, looking away slightly.

"Ecto, I believe I should apologize. I neglected to tell you about the werewolf's illusory abilities until after we started our journey, which would no doubt have been important to your decision of when to attack. Kumori may have been able to detect the werewolf properly at night, which could have prevented your isolation and injury-"

"Jesus Christ, lighten up! There's no need to be so formal!" It was true, Eryn had almost been torn to shreds just now because he got isolated. However, for reasons he couldn't explain, he wasn't that worked up about it. Even when he was being held by the throat, he had never actually panicked.

    "...Right."

If you're not too busy, I'm about to overclock your metabolic rate to help you heal faster. I recommend you find something to eat.
    Wait, what?

Eryn suddenly felt incredibly hungry, as if he hadn't eaten in days. He struggled onto his feet, leaning on Robin for help.
"Let's get going, we're getting lunch!"
"Didn't we just have breakfast a while ago?"
"I think I heard something about how you're not supposed to give food or water to a severely injured person.."

"Doesn't matter, I'm fucking starving, we need to go!"
