Futuristic OPPORTUNITY

Cosimia

Of The Stars

OPPORTUNITY

Humans were responsible for the rise and the fall of planet Earth.

Over the course of 8,000 years, the human population became the greatest and most thriving empire on the planet. They built their cities sky high, steel buildings piercing the bright blue heavens above. Their cars were fast, and their minds were faster. The human race was brilliant.

Their success was based off of a double-sided coin: technology.

On one hand, technology allowed for humans to expand their territories, make life easier and more enjoyable. The unknown became known in the blink of an eye.

On the other hand, technology literally destroyed it all.

The Law of Conservation of Energy: Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but can be change from one form to another.

The humans' brilliant inventions came with the price of pollution. For years they were ignorant of global warming, up until they were smacked in the face by it. Global temperatures rose to where no crop could grow--no matter the quality of the soil or frequency of watering. The atmosphere became polluted, junk from previous attempts to colonize other planets floating around the atmosphere.

Earth became an orbiting trash can.

their hope

However, humans contain a quality that cannot be observed at the same levels in other organisms. Hope.

For years the remaining population hoped for one last rainstorm, for another ice age to occur, for a miracle God to come and save them from their inevitable frying. In the end, many of them went mad.

There are too many massacres to name, but the humans nearly destroyed themselves fighting for the last of Earth's resources, renewable or not. Over half of the population disappeared off of the face of the planet, 5 billion others were left to come up with an escape plan.

And that they did.

In a government coalition between 7 countries and organizations-- The United States, The United Kingdom, The UN, Russia, China, and Brazil--a plan was created.

If the humans couldn't fix their planet, they would leave it.

Combining the United States' technological intelligence and Russia's capability to keep a secret, they formed a program unknown to the public called OPPORTUNITY. The seven countries built a ship, located on the abandoned continent of Australia, that would supposedly carry the first 1,000,000 humans to another planet in a whole other solar system. They had their eyes set on Wolf 1061 C, 13.8 light years away. Studies done in previous centuries proved that the planet had water, and it was rumored that life had been existing there for millennium.

They didn't have the technology then, but OPPORTUNITY found a way.
the people
When word spread that OPPORTUNITY had created the world's greatest "Get Out of Jail Free" card, everybody wanted on. OPPORTUNITY understood that. They had planned for two sets of people to board the original Destination ship. The Wakened were essentially to be the life support of the Destination. They would be, like their name suggested, the awake citizens that tend the enormous carrier. They would live their normal lives, each with a job to carry out in order for Destination to function properly. These people were selected based off of their skills-- Were they good with the land? How about teaching children? Maintaining peace? Engineering? Their lives would go on as if they were living on Earth, except they had one hell of a view of the universe. Every 365 rotations of Destination, which was shaped like a circular tube that rolled towards its arrival location, women and men would come together to produce the next generation of Wakened citizens. One half of the embryos would be frozen for the future, and the other half would be birthed to continue the cycle.

The second set of passengers of Destination were called the Asleep. They were the leaders of the government coalition, veterans, doctors, scientists, and their family. The Asleep were cyrogenically frozen in their pods underneath the main level of the ship, set in a virtual reality until Destination reached Wolf 1061 C. They weren't to be awakened under any circumstances.
the plot
As mentioned before, Destination was to be powered by uranium for the entire trip. However, after making a hyperjump 10 light years towards their destination, an unexpected emergency on the ship required more energy than usual to be consumed. It was the death of the Wakened's leader, who presided over the 1 million conscious beings and the 500 perfectly preserved officials. There was chaos. Several of the Wakened's factions attempted to take over after the leader's death, using energy for their own greed and recreation unlike ever before. As a consequence, uranium levels fell down to nothing just less than a light year away from their arrival.

The Wakened were not going to give up. Instead of manufacturing more uranium, which could be easily done using the materials the Wakened created during their lives, they began dangerous experiments to get them to Wolf 1061 even faster. One of these experiments, nicknamed "The Shock" for its overwhelming generation of electricity in order to "revive" the ship's uranium processors, literally awakened the Asleep.

Below the main deck where they slept, the electrical connections keeping their virtual realities running and their bodies sustained suddenly were cut. The original designers of Destination designed a backup system in case something like this happened. They would be slowly unfrozen, and eventually put into the Wakened community.

That happened.

The Asleep were jolted awake from their blissful sleep. Cold, confused, and quite disoriented, they were under the impression that they had arrived at their soon-to-be home planet. The Asleep were greeted by one of the Wakened officials, Thomas Brown, to tell them that something had happened. Many retreated back to their capsules, being told that they would return to their sleep momentarily. However, a group of Asleep were not going to let things slide that easily.

They questioned the happenings around them, and eventually made their way to the surface.

They weren't greeted in a friendly manner.

Destination is now faced with a foreign population who are thought of as useless by the Wakened, and no way to keep their ship running long enough to reach the planet they started this whole adventure for.

further information
If you didn't catch that all, here is the whole low-down on the plot. Since the Asleep have been ironically Awakened by the experiments, they surface to the Wakened society. They're discriminated against widely, and when they try to fix things so the Destination can continue forward, they are often faced with threats. The Wakened people think of the Asleep as disgusting, and continue their experiments that but the whole population in danger as they slowly roll towards their destination. As for the characters, you can choose whether you would like to be a Wakened or Asleep. I'm leaving room for plot development because I feel with a little bit of creativity from everybody this could become a brilliant, huge world.

Please leave your thoughts below.

I'd like to see more to work with before fumbling around: What is the political hierarchy like among the Wakened? Are there deviating sentiments towards the now roused Asleep? Will the focus of the roleplay be on Destination, or will things really kick off if/when the ship reaches its original, err, destination?

How much of Earth's history has been retained or lost? Has any of it been elevated to, say, religious credence? (Imagine Al Gore being worshiped as a prophet of his time, LOL.) Actually, that might not even be applicable. A timeline would be very helpful.

Just some stuff to mull over. I can come up with plenty more bases to cover, but I think this would be a good start.

Oh man, am I ever down for this!

Also, a quick thing I wasn't sure about.

These Awakened factions would all be battling for control right? I feel like there may be some overhauls that could possibly benefit them-- Also, would no one have tried to wake one of the Asleep scientists for help?

Hey, thanks for reading this through fully. I know, it's quite a bit of information. I tried to provide as much detail as possible. I'll start answering your questions!

1. Among the Wakened, there wasn't much original intent for any groups to rise. Naturally, however, they did, and they modeled themselves after a traditional separated government. A group of people that enforces the rules set for the community (don't steal, don't kill, morals that need to be in place in order for the people to survive) would naturally be at the top, and their children would continue on their parents' jobs as rule enforcers. Think of it kind of like England's monarchy. Underneath them would be people with more important jobs such as supplying food for the community or maintaining the technology that is required for Destination to run. There's nothing really set in stone, which is why there was much chaos after the Wakened's leader passed away.

2. Most of the Wakened had never heard of the Asleep, they were often referred to as "cargo" by people with the knowledge, such as citizens with jobs pertaining to Destination's energy usage and providing supplies for all beings (including the Asleep) on the ship. Those people would likely think of the Asleep more like equals, since they know the truth about the Asleep being there. Those who do not know of their presence are surprised with their sudden appearance, and most react negatively to a surprise in an environment where they have very specific plans and jobs to do (every Wakened is assigned a role for their entire life). It is possible that some Wakened who were not aware of the Asleep's presence to react positively, it all depends on the person's outlook on things.

3. I imagine that this roleplay would begin with the Asleep wakening, and then once that is through, the rising problem of low energy sources for the ship. If the roleplayers do decide to land on Wolf 1061 C, which I'm totally for, (I'm leaving that for the people), they could take it from there.

4.As for the Wakened's knowledge of Earth, they know little to nothing. We're talking about a civilization that has been traveling and reproducing for generations (space travel still takes a long time). Much information, if not all, has been lost.

Hope that clears things up!

I feel like the first task of the Awakened would to be to simply survive and adjust. However, at the same time, they will be trying their hardest to "fix" the ship as they do have the knowledge and capability that is required. That is frowned upon, though, as the Asleep are viewed as a lower class by many Wakened.

See the above post for a little more info on the Wakened's knowledge of the Asleep. Basically, they didn't know they were there. Unless they were part of the maintenance roles, but even then, they wouldn't have the clearance to waken the Asleep as they were locked until the ship became "idle" at Wolf 1061 C.

Sounds like a very nice idea, and if I weren't already completely swamped, I'd be 150% on this, since space and dystopia is kinda My Jam.

Personally, I couldn't see the Asleep as being ostracized or viewed as lower than the Wakened. People who have forgotten everything about where they came from suddenly have access to a set of people who were there? I'd be surprised if they weren't elevated to God status and immediately expected to save the population and get them to the Destination. But that'd be an entirely different plot all together.

I was getting a sort of maintenance crew vibe at first. This is a much larger, sprawling premise than I thought. I tend to work better in roleplays where the characters will be in tight-knit groups with the accessibility to near-constant contact. Like if not physically, then through a comm link channel or the like. Provides a little more wiggle room for characters to venture off yet still contribute to the plot if only through conversation.

What exactly do you want to focus on, though? The conflict between the two groups? The scramble for resources? Possible mutiny?! I guess what I mean is, is this more of an adventure kinda thing, or is about character dynamics and how they develop?

I see your point! Thanks for the input.

I feel like the main focus of this RP is going to be an adventure. Personally, I believe that the near-emergency situation will rise above the separation between groups.

As for your concern about communication, I was planning for a comm-like system granted to the citizens, with other people having more access depending on how they need to use it.
:)
