[OOC Thread] Money in the Bank [Money in the Bank]

Haku1

Ze Hamster of Lurkdom
Shouldn't that be silver? I mean that's what the Guild uses. Right? :D

And First Post!

Ok, I gotta discuss a few things about my character.

So the basic backstory is that she's a slave, right? Her tribe (or herd, since they're beastmen) were due to be conquered by a Lunar, but she decided to go and try talk them out of it; she Exalted as an Eclipse but didn't realise the depth of what she had become, and so offered herself in servitude in exchange for the Lunar not only leaving them alone but taking them into their protection, and used her anima to bind it. She did not suspect, at the time, that her potential worth was much more than what she asked for it.

It wasn't so bad with the Lunar, but a few years later there was a big Fae incursion and things were looking grim; here's where the Guild comes into it, because they (with suspicious fortuitousness) had collected a nice big pile of artifact weapons, and offered them and a good load of mercenaries... in exchange for her. The choice was essentially between living and dying, so the trade had to be made. Thus, my character is an Eclipse Solar indirectly enslaved to the guild by the power of her own anima.

Now, the thing is that this presents some peculiar problems vis-a-vis Backgrounds. She has one dot of Cult, because she's remembered by her people as turning into some sort of sun-hero who saved them all, but aside from that she doesn't really have anything. If she has any Artifacts, they've just been given to her to power with her essence or to use for the guild's benefit before giving them back. If she has any Followers, they're bodyguards or other slaves who are really in service of the guild, not her. If she's taken to some fancy party as a shiny pet, then the jewelery and silks she wears are bought with the Guild's Resources, not hers.

So, essentially, she has one dot in one background and nothing else, just whatever the whims of the Guild give her at any point in time. Is this ok?

Also, for the purposes of writing the backstory; what'll our boss be like? Since he's going to be her master.

Hmmm... could you emulate this with the 'arsenal' background for the artifacts and resource usage and such?

Or perhaps, have a 'pool of resources' from the patron? Or some such?

And shiney sun-pets NEVER end well for anyone... even if they're beast-peoples. :D

Also... she should have SOME idea on what she is now... or is capable... or is she willingly going along with her enslavement? It having some set term of length or some such? or conditions on it?

The original enslavement... as I've invented it... was a tribal tradition descended from the Lunar tradition of life-debts and the chiminage rituals of shamans; essentially, it's a formalised way for any barbarian who holds to the tradition to sell themselves into slavery in exchange for some sort of boon, without losing honour thereby; in fact doing so for heroic purposes (such as, as in this case, protecting your tribe from a powerful supernatural threat) actually increases your prestige in much the same way giving your life for a cause does in other cultures.

By the terms of this particular agreement, my character gave herself as a slave to the Lunar in exchange that the Lunar would guide and protect her people; in return, my character's life would belong to them to do with as they will, and she has to show proper deference as well as do whatever is commanded of her. The difference from how it usually plays out is that she enforced it with her Eclipse anima. Now, "do with as they will" includes the possibility of transferring ownership, so she now has to obey the guild boss, though the Lunar still has to fulfill their part of the agreement. It also includes the possiblity of the owner setting her free, but this is entirely at the owner's will. If her guild master dies without setting her free she has to go back to the Lunar.

So in a way she is willingly going along with it, in the sense that if she doesn't she'll get smacked down by heaven. Though personally I play the Eclipse Oath as being some sort of imperative as well as a consequence, so that a character is not actually capable of chosing to break it; the punishment only comes in if they forced somehow. But that's just me.

Also, yes, she is much more aware of her stature now. In fact she kind of beats herself up over her ignorance at the time, which increases her willingness to go along with enslavement; it's her punishment for being stupid.

My other concern for her is the amount of Flaws I've given her; I took the 5-point version of Debt to represent the enslavement, and she's also a 5-point Pacifist (has to spend a dot of willpower to make any sort of physical attack), which is part of what made her so set on a peaceful solution with the Lunar in the first place. Also because she's a herbivore, which brings me to my next Flaw, a custom negative mutation representing her vegetarianism which means she gets sick if she eats meat... but that goes over the 10-point Flaw maximum and so its just for flavour. :3

The Pacifist flaw also makes her Hooves and Horns mutations useless, but I'll pay the points for them regardless. I still wonder if that's too much flawination for DFR's tastes, however.

isn't there a diet mutation that covers vegetarianism? ^_^ ;

*blinks at the terms and enslavement* Yeah... well... she seems to be doing not too badly in terms of her anima oaths. There are worse things you could end up with/as under those oaths...

As for the debt thing... I don't know... it seems more like an ally/mentor type deal? Perhaps a custom background to represent a master? Kind of like the abyssals and their deathlord masters?

Well, see, the problem is that she's filled with the uttermost contempt for the guild and all its doubledealing shenanigans.

Oh, an there is a diet mutation, but it's more restricted than simple vegetarianism. It's more of a "you can only eat this" rather than "you can't eat this" dealie.

Jukashi,

Thanks for pointing out the silver/jade thing. You are completely correct and i should have known this as I just finished going through the money section of 1e manacle and coin.

Thanks,

But I could have just said... who says you are really working for the guild? duh duh duuuuuuuuh mwuhahaha...

But that would have been cliche and in a way...stupid.

Moving on,

love the slave character idea...it would actually tie in very well with the leader of your caravan. He tends to like..pets...

I will start posting npc information, of course this info will be need to know in depth, but enough to wet your appetites.

That was Haku. :P

I have a character idea percolating in the deep, dark recesses of my brain right now, with a question sent by PM to DFR about the character. So, I'm in!

Rough Draft being sent to you DFR, although I may have sent it twice.

Nexus-born Chosen of Journeys with a street-rat background.

Grrr! I was gonna play a Sidereal! Now, I may have to change my mind... :(

Haku Jaiku...Hajaiku...whatever.. thanks for whoever pointed it out haha..

Love the characters you all are creating...some fun stuff here.

I've got a Fire Aspect statted up. I haven't pinned down the backstory yet, so I'll wait and see what sort of details DFR gives out.

Sherwood, go ahead and make one. I made need another one to watch my back. This Sid has virtually gone Rogue. He is now in Nexus living the life he wants to and not caring if people know he is a Sid or not, etc.

Yeah, but considering what he has seen in Yu-Shan he has no guilt about doing things for himself with the advantages that were destined to be his. Mind you, he is still a good soul at heart, but he did grow up on the streets of Yu-Shan.

Is there going to be a start date set any time soon? I still got to post a background story and why my character is romping around where ever we are going to be romping around.

Thankfully, I made my willpower roll and Barbie Za Mussels will not look like Princess Peach, no matter how amusing it would be.

I do have to wonder if any one has caught on to what I'm basing the name on or not. ^_^

Sorry about the character not being finished yet, I have gotten caught up in work as of late. That and I still am going through all of our boxes and unpacking things from the move. Recently discovered that my couch is screwed, and a computer got bashed to hell.

Not quite... althou, she is partly inspired by that... more...

Barbie = barbeque in australia, "toss some shrimp on the barbie"... ^_-

And mussels = clam

so... barbie za mussels = ^_-

So, when you get attacked by a fire elemental, how many bad jokes will it take to make you smack yourself in the forehead for choosing that name?
